Three Days to See (Excerpt)
Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to
live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude
would emphasize sharply the values of life.
sharp·ly鲜明地,明显地;急剧地,突然大幅度地;
We should live each day with a gentleness, a vigor, and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches out before us in an endless vista.
The listlessness, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses. Those who have never suffered the loss of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these
faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little appreciation.
char·ac·ter·ize /ˈkærəktəraɪz/ 是…
I have often thought it would be a good thing if each human
being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life.Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys
of sound.
stricken (with/by sth)/ˈstrɪkən/ 受煎熬的,患病的,遭受挫折的
ap·pre·cia·tive (of sth) /əˈpriːʃətɪv/ 感激的,感谢的;欣赏的,赏识的
Recently I was visited by a good friend who had just returned from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed. “Nothing in particular,” she replied. How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch.
I feel the delicate symmetry of a leaf and I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud, the first sign of awakening Nature after her winter’s sleep. Something of the miracle of Nature is revealed to me and the changing seasons are a thrilling and unending drama, the action of which streams through my fingertips.
awaken·ing adj.
whose action
At times my heart cries out with longing to see all these things. If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight? Perhaps
I can best illustrate by imagining what I should most like to see if I had three days of sight. What would I most want to let my gaze rest upon?
On the first day, I should want to see the people whose kindness, gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. First I should like to gaze long upon the face of my dear teacher, who opened the outer world to me and accomplished the difficult task of my education with sympathetic tenderness and patience.
I should look long into the faces of all my dear friends, imprinting upon my mind the outward evidence of the beauty that is within them. I should take a long walk in the woods and rest my eyes on the beauties of Nature. When darkness had fallen, I should experience the double delight of being able to see by artificial light, which man has created to extend the power of his sight.
I should devote the second day to a hasty glimpse of the world, past and present, and probe into the soul of man through his art. My first destination would be the American
Museum of Natural History, where the condensed history of the earth and its inhabitants is displayed.
probe (into sth) /prəʊb/ 盘问,追问,探究,=investigate
My next stop would be the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the spirit of Egypt, Greece and Rome, as expressed in their art, is unfolded before me. I should spend the evening at a theatre or at the movies. How I should like to see with my own eyes the fascinating figure of Hamlet, or the hearty Falstaff!
Hamlet /ˈhæmlət/
Falstaff /ˈfɔːlstɑːf/
The third and last day would be spent in the workday world of the present, so New York City, with so many activities and conditions of men, becomes my destination. I start from my home in a quiet little suburb, and drive across the East River. I look ahead, and before me rise the fantastic towers of New York. I hurry to the top of the Empire State Building, anxious to see with my own eyes the city below me.
Then I make a tour of the city. Always my eyes are wide open to all the sights of both happiness and suffering so that I may probe deep and add to my understanding of how people work and live. In the evening I should run away to the theatre, to a genuinely funny play, so that I might
appreciate the overtones of comedy in the human spirit.
add to sth.
With this short outline of how I should spend three days of sight, I can give one hint to those who see: use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be stricken blind. And the same method can be applied to other senses. Make the most of every sense; glory in all the pleasure and beauty which the world reveals to you through the several means of contact provided by Nature.
A.Write a summary of the adapted excerpt. Use the following questions to help you.
• How do people use their senses?
• What would Helen Keller most want to see if she had three days of sight?
• What advice does Helen Keller give to people with good senses?
Helen Keller believes that we must live each day as if we should die tomorrow. She feels people do not make full use of their eyes and ears to appreciate what they see or hear.
Keller imagines what she would like to see if she had three days of sight. On her first day, she wants to see the people who have been kind and gentle to her and who have given her company. She also wants to see the beauties of nature, and the artificial light invented to light up the darkness.
She would spend her second day visiting museums and also spend the evening at a theatre or at the movies. On the
third day, Keller wants to make a tour of New York City, starting from her own home, and ending her day with a funny play at the theatre.
Keller advises people to use their eyes as if tomorrow they would become blind. She also states that people must use their other senses in the same way and appreciate the pleasure and beauty which the world offers.
B.Helen Keller thinks that darkness would make us more appreciative of sight and that silence would teach us the joys of sound. How do you understand this?
Helen Keller hopes people can use their senses to feel and appreciate the beauty in the world. As humans with good sight and hearing, we may often neglect these abilities, or take them for granted. Keller believes that if our sight and hearing were taken away from us for some time, we would appreciate the ability to see and hear much more. Keller’s words are to encourage the reader to make the most of their senses that allow them to see and hear the beauty of the world.
C.If you had your sight for only three days, what would you most want to see?
On the first day, I would like to see my family and friends and spend time with them doing some fun activities. I want to remember their happy smiling faces and keep the memory of the wonderful time we spend together forever in my mind.I would spend the second day around my home, looking at every part of it, and maybe help my parents with some household chores.
I would then tour my city to know about the place I am living in. On the third day, I should like to relax in a lovely and peaceful nature park with animals and birds, reading a book, or looking at the blue sky and enjoying the beauty of nature around me.

B2.Write an article about the happiest moment in your life. It can be a phase of your life, such as childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age, or a specific event in your life.
The happiest moment in my life that comes to mind is the day when I was awarded the first prize in a teenage kite-flying competition. I was thirteen years old then and
had been flying kites with my grandfather since I was five. I had a lot of wonderful memories of learning how to fly a kite with him on sunny windy days in the park.
I still clearly remember that kite-flying competition. It was extra special because I could show my grandfather that I had learnt his lessons well. I was very nervous because there were many competitors, and I was the youngest contestant. Most kites looked beautiful, with some shaped like animals. The most eye-catching one was a long-tailed red dragon. My kite was a simple colourful diamond-shaped one, but it was special because I had made it myself under the guidance of my grandfather, who was an expert at making champion kites.
As the competition went on, competitors slowly dropped out, until it was just my diamond-shaped kite and the red dragon. There was a time when I almost lost my kite in a tree, but luckily it had a narrow escape. After a battle of wits, the red dragon finally died and fell to the ground. I had won! I could not believe it, but my grandfather did—he knew he had taught me well. Winning the kite-flying competition is the happiest moment in my life. It always reminds me how hard work and dedication can lead to success.
