Hyperbole and a Half, by Allie Brosh
The book, based on Brosh's wildly popular website, contains simple vignettes and comic drawings about her young life. The adventures she describes are mostly inside her head, where we hear and see her deep thoughts most of us are too shy to let out in public.
You will finish reading it in three hours at most. But you'll wish it went on longer, because it's so funny and smart.
The Magic of Reality, by Richard Dawkins
Dawkins,an evolutionary biologist at the University of Oxford, has a gift for making science enjoyable. This book is as accessible as the TV series Cosmos which is for the younger audience. It's an interesting, wellillustrated (有精美插图的) science textbook offering attractive answers to big questions, like “How did the universe form?” and “What causes earthquakes?”
What If,by Randall Munroe
The subtitle of the book is “Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions”,and that's exactly what it is.People write to Munroe with questions that cover all fields of science: physics, chemistry, biology, etc.
Munroe's explanations are funny, but the science supporting his answers is very accurate (精确的).It's an entertaining read, and you'll also learn a bit about things like ballistics,DNA,the ocean, and the atmosphere.

Disturbed by reports of rising domestic violence under coronavirus lockdown,a Polish high school student launched a fake online shop to offer a lifeline to victims trapped in their homes. Her idea won the European Union's Civil Solidarity Prize that came with 10,000 ($12,120).
“I heard about a French initiative (计划),where people go to the pharmacy (药房) and ask for a special mask that lets the pharmacist know they are victims of domestic violence,” Krystyna Paszko explained.“I thought it was so brilliant!” In April, she decided to open her shop “Camomiles and Pansies” to “sell” cosmetics. When a victim writes to ask to buy a cream,a psychologist responds instead of a salesperson and asks how long the “skin problems” have been going on for.If someone places an order and leaves an address,it is actually a code asking for authorities to visit their home.
After Krystyna openly wrote about her plan on the Internet, she was flooded with questions.“I thought it would only be for my friends, but it became a hit,” she said. With so much interest, she contacted the Women's Rights Centre,a Polish NGO (NonGovernmental Organization),asking for assistance. In response it provided psychologists and lawyers to work with the website.Since its launch, more than 350 people have contacted the website. Most of the victims are young, under 40,and about 10% are male. The president of the Women's Rights Centre,Urszula Nowakowska, said she was “very impressed” by Krystyna's project.“There are around 70,000 domestic violence cases annually in Poland,of which only between 13,000-14,000 are treated as crimes.”
Krystyna credits her interest in human rights to her role in the scouts(童子军)—she leads a Warsaw Scout group and has created its web page. After she won the prize, she was pleased that a spotlight was being shone on the problem of domestic violence.

You may not have heard of Ashoka, but for the past 27 years, this association, founded by Bill Drayton, has fought poverty (贫穷) and sickness, promoted education and encouraged small businesses. To support these worthy causes,Ashoka provides money for the world's most promising “changemakers” seeking to solve urgent problems and would like to create a world in which every citizen is a changemaker.
Drayton believes that anyone can become an agent for change. The important thing is to simply give yourself permission. If you see a problem that you care about, you can help solve it.The young in particular are willing to accept this concept because at heart every child wants to grow into a happy, healthy, and useful adult. In fact,it is many young people's ambition to set up programmes or businesses that improve social conditions. An excellent example is an Ashoka project started in 1995 in Dhaka, which handled the rubbish problem facing the city, helped local farmers and provided an income for poor people there.
When Maqsood and Iftekhar began to study the problem of all the uncollected rubbish that lay in Dhaka's streets, attracting rats and disease, they discovered that 80% of it was organic waste. So they educated the poor people in the city to compost (把……制成堆肥) this waste. They knew that they would have a market for the end product because local farmers were struggling with chemical fertilizers (化肥) which were expensive and had reduced the natural minerals in the soil over the years. At first, they were refused, but once they were able to persuade them that there was money to be made, the project took off.In 2009 sales were $14,000.

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
At present, traffic jams have become a major problem which most city inhabitants, especially those who live in metropolises(大城市) have to face in their everyday lives.
Why are traffic jams a problem? At first, owing to the fact that the vehicles keep giving off harmful gases during traffic jams, air pollution and global warming will become worse. In addition, traffic jams will affect the effectiveness of work, because people have to spend much more time on their way to the office than necessary, and they will be distracted(使分心) or their work will be delayed.Apart from this, traffic jams might give rise to more traffic accidents and therefore become a threat to people's lives.
Harmful as traffic jams are,the number of private cars still goes up at a fast speed. Why?Personally, the first reason may be the remoteness of people's workplace. As a result, people have to choose a tool instead of walking to go to work.Being flexible and relatively convenient, private cars become a very attractive choice. Moreover, owning private cars, especially in some developing countries,is a symbol of wealth and high social position. In some developed countries such as the USA,it is also a symbol of independence and maturity.Anyway, owning and driving private cars are regarded by many people as basic human rights.
Undoubtedly, traffic jams must be,and can be eased by correct means. In my view, spending more money on public transportation systems may be a practical means.Policies which encourage people to put these systems to full use,for example, giving certain subsidies(补贴),are necessary. In the meantime, measures to limit the use of private cars, such as levying(征收) higher taxes on cars or petrol,or placing more restrictions on the distribution of driving licences, should be taken.
