A Food festivals around the world Stilton Cheese Rolling May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans.Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese,or go into their competitors' lane (赛道).Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos ( disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment to Stilton cheeses. Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque,New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy (辛辣),but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water.Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolatecovered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you! La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina—the world's largest food fight.A weeklong celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fightstarters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd. The battle lasts little more than half an hour,in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs,or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a muchneeded wash! 1.What can we learn about competitors in the Stilton cheese rolling competition? A.They must wear various formal clothes. B.They must roll a wooden cheese in their own lane. C.They must kick or throw their cheese. D.They must use a real cheese weighing about four kilos. 根据第一段中的“Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese,or go into their competitors' lane(赛道)”以及后面倒数第二句括号里的“but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones”可知,四个人一队,穿着不同的滑稽搞笑的服装,在50米的路程中滚一个完整的奶酪,这个奶酪是木制的。故选B。 答案 B 2.Where is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival held? A.In New Mexico. B.In the Caribbean. C.In Australia. D.In China. Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth部分中的第一句“Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque,New Mexico”可知,这是在新墨西哥州举行的活动。故选A。 答案 A 3.How long does the celebration of La Tomatina last? A.Three days. B.Seven days. C.Less than three days. D.More than seven days. La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight部分中的“A weeklong celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events”可知,西红柿大战这个西班牙的节日的庆祝时间是一周。故选B。 答案 B B Dragon boating is a team sport that has its roots in ancient China. The boats are decorated with a dragon head and tail.In recent years, cancer survivor groups have got involved in the sport to help make friends and help rebuild their lives. On a recent Saturday morning,a group of 20 women were on a boat in the Anacostia River in Washington DC.They moved their paddles(船桨) in rhythm with the call of a coach. The women belong to the dragon boat team GoPink! DC,which trains weekly. It also races against other breast cancer survivor teams in the Dragon Boat Festival. As a result,GoPink! DC won medals in this Washington dragon boat festival. Lydia Collins joined the team five years ago after finding out she had breast cancer.“I was diagnosed with breast cancer.I was demoralized because of my illness—I lost all interest in life and wouldn't even get out of bed to eat.But now I love the team spirit.I just love everything about it.It is like a floating support group on the water.” The paddles are breast cancer survivors and their supporters. Annette Rothemel helped establish(建立) the group in 2006.She is a researcher of the National Institutes of Health as well as a breast cancer survivor.“It is sort of an easy entry sport because on the same boat people at different levels can be doing the same sport.” But Ms Rothemel says dragon boating can be physically demanding, especially for someone who is sick and getting treatment for cancer. “It's hard but I think you have to challenge yourself in life. This is something I look forward to.I get to be out here with my sisters and supporters that understand what I'm going through and help motivate me.So it makes me stronger and it makes me feel better,” another cancer survivor Rhonda Hartzel said. Annette Rothemel says the cancer survivors feel a sense of sisterhood and share good times when they paddle together. She says both feelings are treasured by the team. 4.What does the underlined word “demoralized” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A.Depressed. B.Anxious. C.Astonished. D.Awkward. 根据画线单词后面的“I lost all interest in life and wouldn't even get out of bed to eat”可知,Lydia Collins当时心情很沮丧,所以可以推断画线词意为“沮丧的”,和A项词义接近。故选A。 答案 A 5.What can we know about Lydia Collins from the text? A.She helps establish Go Pink! DC. B.She tries to find a cure for the cancer. C.She benefits from the dragon boat race. D.She gives up hope because of her illness. C 6.How can the dragon boat race help the cancer survivors? A.Forget their tough experiences. B.Get better physically and mentally. C.Get rid of the pains of their cancer. D.Enjoy the rest of their life without sufferings. 根据文章举的事例以及倒数第二段中的“So it makes me stronger and it makes me feel better”可知,参加龙舟比赛对这些癌症患者的身心都有好处。故选B。 答案 B 7.What does the text tell us about Annette Rothemel? A.She is an expert in studying the cause of the cancer. B.She helps the cancer survivors in financial difficulties. C.She believes there is a healthful result from the dragon boat race. D.She thinks it unwise for the patients to join in the dragon boat race. C C As more and more books become movie adaptations,I can't help but think how this will affect English classes in America.Thinking back to my years in middle and high school—ten years ago,I would be rewarded if I read a number of classics.Today,a majority of those books are also rearranged into movies: Life of Pi,The Great Gatsby,Much Ado About Nothing and Anna Karenina, to name but a few. Even modern books such as The Hunger Games and Harry Potter have been adapted for the big screen. In discussion with my students,I often hear them say they are not going to read books because movies will come out soon, which makes me wonder what effect movie adaptations have on modernday students. Will the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) encourage them to read books more carefully or to use movies to improve their understanding of the text? The CCSS require students to provide textbased evidence when they are reading and discussing a book.By focusing on such evidence, teachers can pull specific details from a book that may have been cut when the book was adapted for the big screen. For instance, after reading and watching The Hunger Games—there were a number of details from the book that were missing from the movie—many people were disappointed with Rue's meek (温顺的)movie role.A student who failed to read The Hunger Games would not quite understand Rue's impact on the games in the same way as someone who had read the book and remembered all the details that went into her death. I am not saying the CCSS will stop students from cutting corners, but I believe if teachers use the support the CCSS provide,it can be a great roadway to ensure all students are digging deeply into texts and not just hitting the play button. 8.Ten years ago, what did students in America do? A.They were fond of reading all kinds of novels. B.They were forbidden to discuss movies in class. C.They were not allowed to watch movies in the cinema. D.They were encouraged to read many literature works. 根据第一段中的“Thinking back to my years in middle and high school—ten years ago,I would be rewarded if I read a number of classics”可知,作者在中学时期如果读了很多经典作品的话,会被给予奖励。 D 9.Which of the following might be the effect that movie adaptations have on modernday students? A.They spend less time in studying. B.They can't understand English texts. C.They spend less time in reading. D.They discuss movies more frequently. 根据第二段中的“In discussion with my students,I often hear them say they are not going to read books because movies will come out soon”可知,因为有根据名著改编的电影,现在的学生读书更少了,因此选C。 答案 C 10.What can we learn from the third paragraph? A.The Hunger Games is the worst movie adaptation. B.It is a waste of time reading and discussing a book in class. C.Movie adaptations may bring trouble in understanding the books. D.Rue's impact on the games is perfectly presented in the movie. C 11.According to the text, what can we know about the CCSS? A.They may prevent students watching movies. B.They may provide students with wellknown movies. C.They may encourage students to write novels. D.They may provide guidance on teaching and learning. 根据文章最后一段中的“I believe if teachers use the support the CCSS provide,it can be a great roadway to ensure all students are digging deeply into texts and not just hitting the play button”可知,在CCSS的支持下,老师们可以确保学生们深入地理解文本,而不是仅仅按下播放按钮。 D D Fans of art believe that its main purpose is to make us look at life from many different angles. When it comes to Cubism, however, the artists of this era want us to look at life from every angle. Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, father of Cubism,is among the art world's most famous names.Like many other great names before him,he felt restricted by the rules of his teachers and decided to do something: breaking them. Early in his painting career,Picasso realized something important about how people view and remember scenes of beauty. When we look at a subject,we don't just see it from one angle,as many paintings appear.Instead,we study the subject from a number of different angles, heights and viewpoints. This is the aim of Cubism: it portrays subjects from a wide range of angles; it doesn't force us to see things as the artist viewed them when he or she painted them.To bring his visions to life,Picasso and other Cubists took the most basic components of a subject and rearranged them in a way which let us see it in full detail. “By breaking objects and figures down into distinct areas,Picasso aimed to show different viewpoints at the same time and within the same space,” the Tate said.Or as Cubist Jacques Lipchitz once put it,“Cubism is like standing at a certain point on a mountain and looking around. If you go higher, things will look different; if you go lower, again they will look different.” Cubism stood out as it was an art movement which didn't just rely on the artists to share their visions by painting what they saw.As Cubist paintings mainly show the subjects in a deconstructed form, this means that viewers must use their imaginations to find the missing pieces themselves. As art critic Johnathan Jones noted,“this is part of the beauty of enjoying Picasso's works.” “If you can relax your gaze enough and just enjoy the painting long enough, something really amazing happens.Your mind produces a solid feeling of the things Picasso was looking at...the world is revealed in its majesty(壮丽),” he wrote. 12.What is the main feature of Cubist works? A.They are simple pictures. B.They break things down into parts. C.They are mainly in black and white. D.They present scenes of life to viewers. 根据第四段中的“‘By breaking objects and figures down into distinct areas,Picasso aimed to show different viewpoints at the same time and within the same space,’the Tate said”(通过将物体和人物分解成不同的区域,毕加索旨在在同一时间和同一空间内展示不同的视角)可知,立体主义作品的主要特征是他们把事物分解成部分。故选B。 答案 B 13.Why are Jacques Lipchitz's words quoted? A.To point out the origin of Cubism. B.To compare Cubism with other schools of art. C.To show his understanding of what Cubism is. D.To show that mountains are a common subject in Cubism. 根据第四段中的“Or as Cubist Jacques Lipchitz once put it,‘Cubism is like standing at a certain point on a mountain and looking around. If you go higher, things will look different;if you go lower, again they will look different.’”,可知,引用Jacques Lipchitz的话是为了表明他对立体主义的理解。故选C。 答案 C 14.Which word would Jonathan Jones probably use to describe Cubist works? A.Imaginative. B.Traditional. C.Colorful. D.Lifelike. 根据最后一段中的“As Cubist paintings mainly show the subjects in a deconstructed form, this means that viewers must use their imaginations to find the missing pieces themselves”和“this is...works”可知,立体派绘画的主体是以没有形式结构的形式呈现的,这就意味着观赏者必须运用自己的想象力去寻找缺失的部分,Johnathan Jones也认为这是欣赏毕加索作品的美妙之处。 故选A。 答案 A 15.Which is the best title for the passage? A.Seeing Every Side B.The History of Cubism C.The Beauty of Enjoying D.Pablo Picasso:A Great Cubist 故选A。 It's now been 6 years since I sold everything and left the United States to travel around the world.__16__ Meet local people. After graduation,Jason went to work in a big business. The schedule was very tight and he was so busy working, travelling from one place to another, that he was always on business for weeks without going to his mother's home. And this year,he hadn't seen his mother for months.Mother's Day was coming up,and he would have managed to go back home, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. One day when he was driving in a small town,he saw a flower shop.He said to himself,“I know what I will do.I'll send my mother some flowers.” He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a boy talking to a girl in it.“How many roses can I get for five dollars?”the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive.Maybe the boy would be happy with something else. “No,I have to have roses,” he said.“It has to be red roses, because my mum likes them best.It is Mother's Day.I want to get something special.” He was stubborn. The girl in the shop looked at the boy and was just shaking her head.Something inside Jason was touched by the boy's voice. It seemed that he wanted to get those roses very much.Jason looked at the boy and said to the girl that he would pay for the boy's roses. The girl looked at the boy and said,“Okay,I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The boy almost jumped into the air.He took the flowers and ran out.It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement. Jason ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have them delivered to his mother. After that, with a relief,he drove down the road. Not long after his driving,he saw the boy Jason stood there in silence. 2.续写线索: 路遇小男孩——听到小男孩说的话——备受感动——想起了自己的妈妈——决定亲自回家看望妈妈 [参考范文] Not long after his driving,he saw the boy who got the flowers' just now.Jason stopped his car and wanted to offer the boy a lift to his home. The boy thanked Jason but didn't speak for a while, and then he sighed,“I don't go home now.I am going to the place where my mum is.” Seeing Jason was a little puzzled, the boy continued in a sad voice,“She died months ago, leaving me alone. How regretful I am that I didn't stay with her enough when she was alive! I was always putting myself in the first place. And now,I want to be with her,but nowhere can I find her.” Jason stood there in silence. The boy's words reminded him of his mother. He loved her so much, but he didn't see her for a long time.Thinking of that,he turned the car and drove quickly towards the flower shop.He asked the girl to give the flowers to him because he wanted to go to his mother's home right away.He couldn't wait to see her!
