In Brazil, a country known for endless parties, the “winter” continues to be full of events that generally celebrate the corn harvest in the Northeast. The whole month of June is filled with block parties, street parties, and even school parties in honor of the harvest. It is Festa Junina, or the June Festival.
Since the beginning of the month I have heard people talking about their plans to attend these parties, of which eating, drinking, and dancing are the main goals. As a foreigner, I’ve come to realize that this is an important time in Brazil — yet it’s largely unknown to outsiders. Near my house, in the local park, I noticed decorations being put up. I thought it would be a perfect chance to experience this special festival myself.
After my students described Festa Junina in their own words, two curious colleagues (同事) and I decided to go to the party on Saturday night. Upon arrival, I noticed the party was decorated with cute, colorful flags and lanterns. It was much more crowded than I had expected — people from all walks of life were there to celebrate the festival together. The men wore plaid (格子图案) shirts, jeans, straw hats, and boots, just like farmers, while the women wore dresses with flower or plaid prints, along with straw hats decorated with flowers and hair bows.
There were food stands selling many types of typical Brazilian “Northeast country” dishes. Typical foods are often made with corn or peanuts, which are present in the main meals in Brazil. I tried canjica, a type of corn pudding.
The native band played songs in a local music style called forró, and people gathered together on the dance floor, waiting for someone — even a stranger — to ask them to dance. As for me, I tried to dance, but I had eaten so much hearty food that I found it hard to keep up with the rhythm (节奏). Still, it was great fun, and I’m glad to have had the chance to see how Brazilians celebrate this time-honored festival!
4. What made the author have the idea of attending Festa Junina?
A. Her colleagues’ description. B. The dream to understand others.
C. Her wish to fit in with the locals. D. The lively celebration atmosphere.
5. What can be inferred about Festa Junina from the text?
A. It features Brazilian country culture. B. It leads to the most parties in Brazil.
C. It aims to bring family members together. D. It draws many tourists from all over the world.
6. Why was the author unable to dance at the party?
A. The music was strange to her. B. She was too full to dance well.
C. The dance was hard to learn. D. The floor was too crowded.
7. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. A foreigner’s first visit to Brazil. B. Winter parties for the corn harvest.
C. Native Brazilian food and dance. D. Experiencing the June Festival in Brazil.

India’s first floating (漂浮的) primary school has been opened on Loktak Lake in Manipur. The school lies among the unique floating islands, or “phumdis”, of the largest freshwater lake in northeast India.
Loktak Lake, famous for its “phumdis”, is often referred to as the “lifeline of Manipur”. It plays an important role in the economy (经济) of Manipur. It serves as a source of water for hydropower generation (水力发电) and drinking water supply. The lake also helps local fishermen make a living.
The school is a wonderful example of sustainable (可持续的) design. Built using local materials such as thatch and bamboo, the school mixes conventional design with modern features. Despite its common appearance, the Loktak Floating Primary School has computers and Internet connectivity, and it gets its power directly from the sun. Reachable only by boat, it serves as a center of education for children from nearby communities on other floating islands or along the lake’s banks.
The Loktak Floating Primary School was founded because many children in the Champu Khangpok floating villages were dropping out of school. The recent move of more than 700 floating houses by the Loktak Development Authority caused the fishing community to lose their homes and disrupted the education of their children. With 25 students and two community teachers, the school aims to address the educational needs of dropouts and uneducated adults in the region. Once proven successful, plans are in place for development.
The Loktak Floating Primary School makes an important step toward providing education for poor communities affected by environmental changes, setting an example for sustainable development in the region.
8. Why is Loktak Lake considered the “lifeline of Manipur”?
A. It is important for the local development. B. It plays a key role in the ecosystem.
C. It is part of the country’s culture. D. It serves as a primary school.
9. What may make the school unique?
A. Its free education. B. Its modern design.
C. Its excellent service. D. Its materials and facilities.
10. What does the underlined word “disrupted” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Completed. B. Upset. C. Changed. D. Benefited.
11. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Sustainable Building in Manipur B. Unique Floating Islands in India
C. The First Floating School in India D. The Importance of Loktak Lake

Do dolphins and whales actually play together, or do the dolphins just avoid the whales? Researchers tried to answer this question by looking through hundreds of photographs and video recordings in a new study. The team examined 199 separate cases where whales and dolphins were observed together. While most of these events were taken from social media videos and images, two of the interactions were recorded using cameras fixed onto two humpback whales (座头鲸) in Australia.
The researchers spent time identifying which species were present in each interaction and where the behaviors took place in relation to the body of the whale, which was divided into head, body and tail. The whale and dolphin behaviors were grouped into different behavior types, including rolling and head and tail movements for the whales, and riding the waves, rolling on their stomachs, and jumping out of the water for the dolphins.
The team thinks that a quarter of the interactions can be grouped as positive interactions or play. For the humpback whales in particular, around a third of these interactions with dolphins are positive, due to the whales’ behavior of rolling, showing their bellies, and moving slowly in the direction of the dolphins. In eight separate events, the team also saw purposeful touching between whales and dolphins.
The researchers didn’t see many examples of the whales and dolphins being mean to each other or trying to avoid each other. “This is mainly related to the context of how the species meet,” explained study lead Dr. Olaf Meynecke. “While social play usually requires both parties to join in, there is also one-sided play, with only one considering the interaction as playful, such as when dolphins annoy (打扰) whales during feeding events.”
“Behavioral studies of marine (海洋的) animals such as these help us understand their complex social structures, which play a key role in improving our understanding of marine ecosystems and the interactions among marine species,” said one researcher.
12. What did the study focus on?
A. The nature of whale-dolphin interactions. B. The general whale and dolphin behaviors.
C. When whales and dolphins prefer to socialize. D. Where whale and dolphin species mostly meet.
13. What did the team find about whale-dolphin interactions?
A. Dolphins always led the interactions. B. Both species performed matching behaviors.
C. Whales showed friendly behavior to dolphins. D. Physical contact was the main form of interactions.
14. What can be learned from Dr. Olaf Meynecke’s words?
A. Interspecies contact is quite common.
B. Not all playful interactions are interactive.
C. Dolphins are generally friendlier than whales.
D. Whales and dolphins benefit from playing together.
15. Why was the researcher’s statement mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To report new discoveries in marine social structures.
B. To show the significance of this study to marine science.
C. To explore ways to understand marine ecosystems better.
D. To make suggestions for future research on marine animals.

【答案】Dear Mike,
I’m sorry to know that you feel weak and often fall ill. Here, I’m writing to give you some advice.
First, you should have a balanced diet and enjoy breakfast every day. Additionally, it is of equal importance to take exercise regularly, which not only contributes to strengthening your bodies but also keeps you away from the stress of study. Most importantly, have enough sleep instead of staying up too late.
I’d be more than glad if my advice would be adopted and I sincerely hope that you can live a healthy life.
Yours,
Li Hua

But seeing her teacher so happy made Tinky feel deeply ashamed. Tinky realized her mistake. She gathered her courage and admitted that the card was stolen. Tears welled up in her eyes as she admitted everything. After hearing what Tinky said, instead of getting angry, her teacher knelt down, gently wiping her tears. “Thank you for your honesty, Tinky. That is the bravest and most precious gift I have received today,” she said softly. She then took Tinky’s hand and walked to the shop, where Tinky apologized to the shopkeeper and paid for the card. Noticing the smile on the teacher’s face, Tinky felt lighter than ever — her heart sparkling clearer than any diamond. Tinky learned a lesson she would never forget.
