It was the Victoria Day long weekend and my friend Gabe and I were taking a road trip in his little car from my home to visit friends in Nelson, B.C. After dating for six months, we enjoyed being with each other since both of us were optimistic. We were adventurous, too. It was our first trip together, so we couldn't wait to go hiking and exploring. At around 5:30 pm on Thursday,we were driving about 18 kilometers on a steep mountain road. We weren't aware there'd recently been flooding in this area. When I looked up from my phone, I saw a wave of mud and an enormous tree barrelling down the mountain, right in front of the car. Gabe tried to stop the car, but it was too late.
The mudslide sent our car falling nearly 300 meters down a rocky cliff (悬崖). It landed on its side in a group of trees. I don't know how long we were unconscious, but I woke up to the sound of Gabe sobbing. He was stuck in the steering wheel (方向盘), and there was blood everywhere. Every time I moved, I was hit with severe chest pain. Gabe, meanwhile, had broken his nose and cheekbones, and his vision was damaged. But the body is an amazing thing, and somehow we were both able to crawl out of that wreckage (残骸).
I was so focused on our survival that I didn't register the wrecked state of the car or where we were. We had no phone signal, so all we could do was yell for help. But my chest hurt too much to even breathe. So Gabe started shouting as loud as he could. We were shocked when, after just a few minutes, we heard someone call back.

Four bystanders had spotted us and walked through waistdeep mud to our rescue.
They took me to the closest hospital and Gabe was sent to a larger hospital in another city by plane.
Four bystanders had spotted us and walked through waistdeep mud to our rescue. I couldn't walk, so the men took turns pulling me up the rock face and helping Gabe make his way up to the road. Gabe was in shock, often slipping in and out of consciousness, and I honestly didn't think he was going to make it. When the rescue workers finally arrived, they let us say goodbye from our stretchers before loading us into separate ambulances.
They took me to the closest hospital and Gabe was sent to a larger hospital in another city by plane. I was in the hospital for a week and a half, but they kept Gabe for six weeks. Even after surgery, I would walk with a limp for the rest of my life, and Gabe permanently lost his vision in his left eye. Before this all happened, we were happygolucky people. We're even more positive now, and we view everything differently. Despite the injuries we have suffered, we're grateful that we're still living a pretty good life.

I sit in my backyard in Abuja, Nigeria, feeling really sad. The hills that used to be full of bright marigolds and colorful bougainvillea flowers—their smells floating in the wind—are now covered by sharp lantana plants. These plants are invasive and kill the native flowers. Ibeno Lake was once so clear that I could see tilapia fish swimming over smooth stones. Now, the lake has a layer of dirty factory waste, and plastic bottles float on top like sad people.
This sad feeling has a name: solastalgia. An Australian philosopher named Glenn Albrecht made up this word in 2003. It means feeling sad when you see your home environment get worse. When I came back after graduating, I was shocked to see how much nature had changed. I used to climb flame trees with my brothers and sisters, but now there are only concrete apartment buildings. Their windows show a sky covered in dust from building sites. Every time I walk past where our mango trees used to be (now a parking lot) or see birds picking through trash by the lake, I feel a lump in my throat.
Climate change is a big problem, but factory waste makes it worse. Pipes pour green sludge into the lake, and the land is dying faster.
Near an old baobab tree, I found a faded photo of my grandma picking marigolds. The soil under my feet is hard and poisoned. A butterfly with oily wings tries to land on a dry lantana thorn. A wind blows in the stinky smell of factory smoke, making me cough. It mixes with the faint flower smell from the photo.

I couldn't bear to remain passive in the face of such loss.
In an age defined by urgent environmental crises, solastalgia acts as a reminder.
写前导读:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。“我”因家乡的糟糕变化——曾经郁郁葱葱的山林如今废弃物随处可见而痛心。“我”会采取什么行动?“我”又会有怎样的感触呢?
[精彩范文]
I couldn't bear to remain passive in the face of such loss. Shortly after returning home, I immersed myself in learning about innovative conservation initiatives sweeping Nigeria. I joined dedicated local environmental groups, actively taking part in largescale treeplanting drives specifically aimed at reviving endangered native species. Additionally, I passionately spearheaded monthly cleanup campaigns at Ibeno Lake, dynamically rallying friends, family, and neighbors to help systematically clear litter from the shorelines and gradually restore its former natural splendor.
In an age defined by urgent environmental crises, solastalgia acts as a reminder. It reveals what we stand to lose and the hope we can still gain. It urges us to deeply treasure our homelands, actively advocate for their careful preservation, and collectively foster a profound sense of stewardship toward the fragile world we all inhabit. Our responsibility is clear: to bravely forge a shared future where both humanity and the planet can thrive harmoniously.

I locked eyes with the fish as I tapped flakes of food into his tank. He stared blankly at me through the glass. Not exactly my idea of a perfect pet.
I'd begged my parents for a dog or a cat. Even an iguana would have been better than a fish. But they showed up one day with a bright gold fish swimming around in a plastic bag. They smiled at me and expected me to be excited. For a fish. A silly little fish.
In protest, I named him Dog.
Don't get me wrong. I've got nothing against fish. They're perfectly fine animals. But I wanted a pet that would do tricks and greet me when I entered a room. A pet that would show affection, like a tail wag or meow. Instead, I got a deadeyed fish.
Or so I thought.
“I'm never going to get a dog,” I said to my best friend, Jane, on the phone. I stared at my fish lazily. Suddenly, Dog stopped eating and swam over from the other side of his tank. He looked at me expectantly.
“What do you want?” I whispered. Dog turned and swam back to his dinner.
“It's not fair,” I said, continuing to complain to Jane. “Everyone else has a dog.”
Once again, the fish swam over from the other side of the tank, right up to the glass next to me. I gave him a puzzled look.
Did he know his name was Dog? Was he coming to me when I called him? No way. Fish weren't that smart, were they?
I waited for Dog to swim away again and begin eating. Then I said, “Dog!”

I was rethinking all my ideas about fish.
He immediately swam over. Maybe Dog wasn't a stupid fish. After that, I ran right home after school every day to teach Dog tricks. After several weeks, Dog could do looptheloops at my command. He could even fetch a little plastic ball by swimming under it and pushing it up to the top of the tank. He became a good listener. When I told him good news, he would wag his tail. Whenever I walked into the room, Dog would always swim up to me.
I was rethinking all my ideas about fish. I realized Dog had been my pet and could do what other pets could. I enjoyed the time when I was accompanied by Dog. I began to take him outside and introduce him to my friends. I shouted commands to Dog, and he did each one as we'd practiced. The kids were surprised that Dog was not a dog and impressed by his performance. Some of them went home and asked their parents for pet fish.
