Lena had always dreamed of adventure. When she was offered a job in Shanghai, she grabbed the chance, imagining busy streets, neon lights, and Chinese dinners. But nothing prepared her for the reality of living in China.
She was overwhelmed from day one—subways packed so tightly that she could barely breathe, store clerks speaking too quickly for her to understand, and the subtle social rules that everyone seemed to follow instinctively (直觉地) except her. The unspoken expectations of bowing at the right angle, handing business cards with both hands, and never speaking too loudly in public made her feel like an alien in her own life. She wanted to adapt, but every attempt ended in awkwardness.
The worst part was lunch at work. Her colleagues, though polite, never invited her out. She would sit alone, struggling with her chopsticks as they enjoyed their meals, making her feel like an outsider. One day, after a particularly embarrassing incident of accidentally slurping soup too loudly, she fled to a quiet alley and stumbled into a tiny noodle shop.
The shop was old, and the wooden sign faded with age. Inside, the owner—a tough old man—stared at her as she struggled with her chopsticks. After a long sigh, he disappeared behind the counter and returned with a fork, setting it in front of her wordlessly. The few regulars chuckled, not unkindly, but the embarrassment burned through her. She left the shop quickly, vowing never to return.
Yet, the next day, she found herself standing in front of the same shop. Something about it felt different from the cold formality of the office. Hesitantly, she stepped inside. To her surprise, the old man had already prepared a bowl of noodles and placed a fork beside it.
“Western style,” he said.

This time, instead of running, Lena laughed. She picked up the fork, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. It was as if the old man, with his simple act of kindness, had given her permission to be herself in a place that constantly challenged her. Over the next few weeks, Lena made herself a regular at the shop. Each time she entered, the old man would greet her, and a bowl of noodles with a fork beside it would be waiting for her. Slowly, she began to feel more at home in China, finding small moments of comfort in the unlikeliest of places.
One evening, a group of foreigners entered the shop, their English filling the air. They looked lost and overwhelmed, much like Lena had been on her first day. Seeing their struggles, Lena stood up and walked over. “Need help?” she asked with a warm smile. She explained the menu, showed them how to use chopsticks, and even shared a few tips about navigating life in Shanghai. As she sat back down, the old man gave her a rare nod of approval. Lena realized she had found not just a place to belong, but also a way to help others feel at home.

In a mountain village in Peru, poor boy Pepe herded sheep daily in tattered clothes, whistling and singing. His dream? To own panpipes for his flock.
Each evening, Pepe passed the village market where the instrument maker played panpipes for him. The villagers shared what little they had, except for one person.
Pepe's neighbor, the wealthy baker, baked flavored cakes daily but refused to share leftovers with hungry children, feeding them to pigeons instead. Though Pepe longed for a warm cake, he couldn't afford one and simply inhaled the bakery's fresh, hot aroma each day.
One day, as Pepe stood near the baker's wall smelling the delicious smells, the baker leaned out of his window, his hat nearly flying off his head.
“Stop that right now!” ordered the baker.
Pepe looked around, afraid that his sheep had wandered into the baker's yard. “Stop that!” the baker ordered again.
“What have I done?” asked Pepe.
“You are stealing the smell of my baked goods!” roared the baker.
Pepe began to laugh because he thought surely the baker was joking.
“You have been stealing smells from me every day. I demand to be paid three silver coins for the pleasure you have received from my goods!” yelled the baker.
“I have no money to give you,” said Pepe to the baker.
“Then be prepared for the judge tomorrow!” yelled the baker.
Pepe was afraid, for although he knew the judge was fair, he also knew the baker was powerful in their village.
That night in bed, Pepe thought about what to do. Finally, he sat up and smiled. He had an idea that just might work.

The next day, Pepe arrived at the judge's court with the three silver coins borrowed from the instrument maker for the trial. “Pepe has been stealing the smell of my baked goods for a very long time,” said the baker. “Now, I demand to be paid three silver coins.” Pepe took out the three silver coins and shook them in his hands. “Baker,” said Pepe, “can you hear the sound of the silver coins clinking together?” “Yes!” said the baker rubbing his hands in excitement. “Then I've paid my debt in full if you think this is fair.” Pepe said to the judge.
The judge smiled and then began to laugh. “What?!” yelled the baker. “I have not been paid! I demand the coins!” “I enjoyed the smell of your cakes,” said Pepe, “and now I have paid you the sound of my coins.” “Then all is settled!” declared the judge. Pepe returned the coins to the instrument maker who gave Pepe a beautiful set of clay panpipes of his very own as a reward for his cleverness. That evening, Pepe walked home happily.

Thirteenyearold Sam adjusted his helmet and tightened the straps on his rollerblades (轮滑鞋). The skatepark near his new apartment was buzzing with activity. Kids zoomed up and down ramps, grinding on rails and flipping their skateboards. Sam had always loved rollerblading, but he hadn't made any friends since moving to the city two weeks ago. He felt like an outsider, watching from the sidelines.
As he practiced near the edge of the park, he noticed a group of three kids gathered together, whispering and glancing at him. There was a girl with short blue hair, a tall boy with a sticker-covered skateboard, and a smaller boy with a camera hanging around his neck. Sam's stomach twisted. Were they talking about him?
Before he could skate away, the girl waved him over. “Hey, the new kid! Come here!” she called.
Sam hesitated but rolled over slowly. “Uh, hi,” he said, trying to sound casual.
“I'm Mia,” the girl said, pointing to herself. “This is Jay,” she gestured to the tall boy. “And that's Max.” The smaller boy gave a shy wave. “We noticed you got some sick moves. Wanna join us?”
Sam blinked, surprised. “Really? I mean ...sure!”
The group quickly welcomed him into their circle. Mia was the fearless leader, always trying new tricks. Jay was the joker, making everyone laugh with his silly commentaries. Max was the quiet one, capturing their best moments with his camera. They called themselves the “Skatepark Squad”, and Sam loved how they included him right away.
But not everyone at the skatepark was friendly. A group of older kids, led by a boy named Tyler, had a reputation for being mean. Sam had already seen him yell at a younger kid for “being too slow”.
Sam frowned. “Why doesn't anyone stand up to him?”
“Because he's bigger, louder, and kind of scary,” Jay shrugged.

But Sam had an idea.
The competition was intense.
But Sam had an idea. He noticed that Tyler and his group rarely showed real skill. Sam suggested they organize a competition to challenge Tyler and his crew. “If we show them we're not afraid and that we can outskate them, maybe they'll back off,” Sam said. Mia, Jay, and Max loved the idea. They made up a team and spent the next few days practicing together, perfecting their tricks and building their confidence. By the day of the competition, their skills had significantly advanced.
The competition was intense. The skatepark was packed with kids eager to see the competition. Tyler took the lead, performing daring actions. But Sam and his new friends didn't back down. When it was Sam's turn, he took a deep breath and launched into a series of highspeed spins and jumps, landing perfectly each time. The crowd erupted in cheers. Even Tyler looked impressed, though he tried to hide it. The team successfully earned Tyler's respect, and Sam finally felt a sense of belonging.
