Mary led a fairly sheltered life and was quite shy. On every social occasion, her outgoing husband took the lead, striking up conversations with strangers. In October 2015, Mary and her husband retired and moved to the beautiful seaside city of Nanaimo, where Mary was looking forward to some quiet, creative activities. One day, they heard about an upcoming storytelling event in their neighborhood and decided to take part in it.
As the storytellers told stories on stage, the audience laughed, cried and sang. Like everyone else, Mary was also attracted by their performance. She watched closely as a grayhaired storyteller mimicked seagull calls during a tale about coastal life, his voice rising and falling with the rhythm of the waves. Somewhere in the middle of the storytelling, Mary suddenly had an exciting idea. She whispered to herself, “I love stories! I want to be a storyteller!”
Mary knew that storytelling requires getting up on a stage under bright lights and addressing strangers. Besides, storytelling requires selfconfidence and tons of memorization. She thought, “I'm a shy person and public speaking is my greatest fear. I'm already sixty years old and my memory isn't that great. What if I get up there and forget my story? Where am I going to get the talent, memory, and courage needed to become a storyteller?” But as she watched the storytellers bow to thunderous applause, she noticed a faded photo of a young girl pinned to the stage backdrop—perhaps a reminder of why stories matter. For the first time, she felt a spark in her chest, like a lighthouse flame flickering to life across the foggy sea.

When the course began, Mary found a young, smiling teacher coming in. The teacher introduced herself and then asked everyone to introduce themselves, which made Mary more anxious. With the encouragement of her husband, she introduced herself anyway. Later, the teacher explained some storytelling skills, including how to use body language. During the second course, learners were asked to tell short stories using the skills in front of others. Mary found learners there friendly and humorous. Days later, she became good at storytelling and made many new friends.
After finishing all the courses, Mary signed up to tell a story on stage. After selecting a story, she made an effort to memorize it and practise telling it. In addition, she often turned to her new friends when she had problems. They helped each other to improve their storytelling skills. Finally, Mary was able to perform excellently on stage. After that, Mary's confidence continued to grow and her shyness just faded away. She also realized that one was never too old to challenge oneself and learn new things.

When I was a child, I always wanted to impress my parents, especially my mother, who had a particular fondness for beauty. At that time, we had a large yard with a magnificent maple tree. It stood proudly in the middle of the yard, its golden leaves falling every autumn. But my mother would always look at those leaves with disgust, as if they were just heaps (堆) of rubbish to be cleared away. She never seemed to appreciate nature's beauty. My father, on the other hand, didn't care much for the tree. He found it all too much work, especially when he saw the neighbors working on their gardens. He would even comment that it was a waste of time.
At the age of ten, I felt an urge to do something opposite to what my parents thought. If they disliked gardening, I would create my own garden—one that would surely change their minds. I began planting lily seeds in the yard, hoping to surprise them. But my efforts were in vain—the lilies never came up. Undefeated, I tried planting sunflowers, roses and anything I could think of. Slowly, with a sense of determination, I noticed the first rose beginning to bloom. And then another, and another. One by one, the flowers bloomed, almost as though they were competing to show their beauty.
But to my disappointment, my parents showed no interest in my garden. My father even complained about the flowers cluttering up (堆满) the driveway, which made it difficult for him to park his car. My mother, especially, was annoyed when I used her favorite vase to display my roses. She saw them as mere wilting flowers, nothing more than temporary decorations. Despite their disapproval, I continued to care for my garden, stubbornly tending to each plant. Gardening became my escape, a place where I could connect with nature in my own way. As the years passed, I became more skilled. The garden grew lush and vibrant, becoming the talk of the neighborhood. Yet, my parents remained unmoved, uninterested in anything I had achieved.

[精彩范文]
Then came a twist. One evening, as the sun dropped below the horizon, my mother stepped outside. She paused, her eyes scanning the garden. The roses, now in full bloom, shone in the fading light. Then, to my astonishment, she bent down and gently touched a rose, her fingers brushing against its delicate surface. A faint smile appeared on her lips, and she whispered, “They are beautiful.” My father, who had followed her out, glanced at the garden and muttered, “Well, I suppose it's not so bad after all.”
I never expected their attitudes to change. But from that day on, my parents began to take notice of the garden. My mother started joining me in the evenings, helping me water the plants and cut the roses. My father no longer complained about the flowers blocking the driveway. Instead, he would often sit on the porch, admiring the flowers. The garden had become a shared joy, a place where we could all find peace and beauty together.

Alex, an ordinary professional cyclist for 11 years, has won two Giro stages, a European under23 title and multiple national timetrial championships. His remarkable story shows that nothing stopped his successful cycling career.
When Alex was a happy and healthy little boy, Mom and Dad would notice how easily he bruised (出现瘀青). It was quite unusual for him, as he had never shown anything like this before.
“What's wrong with him?” Mom and Dad were puzzled. They held him up and when they put him down, he had two black bruised thumbprints across his chest. Mom knew something wasn't right and took him to the doctors, but they kept sending her away, saying, “He's just a boy that bruises easily.”
At school, Alex was popular and enjoyed cycling everywhere with his best friend Chand, undeterred by mountains, riverbanks, or thorny bushes.
But since Alex's condition developed, Chand has found something wrong was happening. When hanging out along the field in the afternoon, Alex suggested a break before hitting the road again.
“All right!” Chand agreed. Yet, the next moment, he spotted something strange about his friend.
“What's wrong with your knees, Alex?” Chand was curious, “You were not falling off your ride, were you?”
“Well, that's strange.” Alex touched his knees, a patch of bruise yet not very much.
“Doctors said I was just a boy that bruised easily.”
“Be a strong man!”
Both of them laughed.
That very night when Alex was back home, Mom and Dad were reading the papers.
“How was it going?”
“As fun as usual! But I got a bruise again.”
“Give yourself a break, and don't stay up!”
Mom was a bit anxious when she noticed the bruise on her son's knees. She stayed awake as she assumed that might be hemophilia (血友病). They walked down the aisle. It was two in the morning.

They checked on Alex with a shock.
“You are here. What's wrong with me?” Alex looked around.
They checked on Alex with a shock. Alex was sleeping in a pool of his own blood. Therefore, they rang the doctor immediately because they thought he had hemophilia. Then the blood test results showed that Alex had severe hemophilia A. On the way out of the blood test, Alex fell over and split the skin between his lip and teeth. When he came to, he found himself in a hospital bed, with Mom, Dad and friends who cared about him.
“You are here. What's wrong with me?” Alex looked around. “Don't worry,” Chand comforted him as he approached. “We will be out there for you.” “Right!” Mom and Dad had tears in their eyes. “Is everything OK with me?” Alex was anxious. “Sure thing!” Chand added, “Nothing can stop us!” With the right medicine available, Alex's life became easier, and he continued his journey as a cyclist with his family and friends, not in the wheels, but on the wheels that won a world championship in professional cycling.
