The Conscious Closet by Elizabeth L. Cline
As the pressure to save the planet increases, it’s important to turn the conversation to our closet.
Stockpiling endless printed books on sustainability seems somewhat unwise, but The Conscious Closet is easily the best of the lot. It exposes the true cost of fast fashion and encourages the reader to think twice about unwise purchasing, drawing deeply on Cline’s own experiences.
How To Dress Secret Styling Tips From A Fashion Insider

Former fashion editor at Stylist magazine, Alexandra Fullerton certainly knows something about getting dressed.
Illustrated beautifully, this book allows you to dip easily in and out of her easy-to-follow advice, helping you carve out a signature style, shop more effectively and even wash and store your clothes to maximize their full potential.
The New Fashion Rules by Victoria Magrath
One of the UK’s most successful fashion bloggers, Victoria McGrath has used her platform to demonstrate the growing value of influencer culture on fashion and new media.
Her friendly, accessible tone is backed up with some serious knowledge — her PhD in fashion marketing allows her to explore how far fashion has come in recent decades, discussing many things including virtual reality shopping while offering up a brief tour of fashion’s 21st century history.
Advanced Love by Ari Seth Cohen
The photographic blog series that made stars of Iris Apfel and Linda Rodin, the Advanced Style brand has grown over the past decade, demonstrating that real beauty is truly ageless.
His third and most recent book, Advanced Love sees Ari Seth Cohen picturing couples from all walks of life, making a statement about our dismissal of romance within the over-40 set.

Visual texts are great jumping-off points for discussion and reflection during literature circles. For my heroic journey literature circle, the webcomic series Zen Pencils has been particularly effective. Artist Gavin Aung Than typically takes a famous quote and develops a comic around it. By going through his personal website, I was able to find various comics relating to courage, perseverance, and kindness, which were used as key supports throughout the unit.
Each week, I asked students to complete reflections based on their reading. Often I prefaced these reflections by showing a comic that got at the heart of what I would like them to analyze. For instance, I showed them an illustration about failing better prior to having them write about perseverance in their book. Or we read a comic called Fear is Paper Tigers, based on a quote by Amelia Earhart, before focusing on how our characters demonstrate courage. Or we looked at a comic about kindness, prior to discussing the difference between kindness and selflessness and how each might be present in our novels. These visual introductions set the stage for deeper reflections than a written prompt.
By using these comics, I demonstrated key concepts in a way that was engaging and accessible to students. At higher levels, the comics offered opportunities for critical analysis, as they often included challenging poetry or deep ideas. As well, the illustrations presented a story that could be a foil for their own text. For example, in one of the comics, the main character overcame a small everyday challenge with humor, while in the students’ novels, the characters were facing life-or-death situations. This contrast made students more aware of the gravity and complexity of the challenges in their own reading materials.
By including visual texts in my literature circle unit, students were challenged to consider their books in a new light and to think more deeply about their characters. Given this success, I fully intend to use more visual texts in other units in the future.
4. What inspires the creation of Zen Pencils?
A. Well-known sayings.
B. Popular comic books.

Earlier this year, Alicia Meyer, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, tried to figure out the true ownership of a pair of leather gloves that rested in the university’s library for nearly a century. The long-forgotten mysterious gloves couldn’t have belonged to William Shakespeare. Or could they?
Few relics tied to Shakespeare, who died in 1616, have survived the centuries. The writer’s signature is extremely rare, existing only in legal documents. However, that Penn may possess a Shakespearean treasure is no surprise. Its Shakespeare collections, mostly from the donations of H. H. Furness, the greatest Shakespearean scholar of his time, are world-famous. Among the Shakespearean jewels at Penn’s library is a 1611 edition of Hamlet, one of only 19 copies in the world. But nothing like the gloves. They caused a stir when Furness’ son donated them in 1931.
Meyer reached out to conservation librarian Tessa Gadomski for help, who studied them with technology normally used to treat and care for rare books and papers. Examining the gloves under ultraviolet light, Gadomski searched for clues of any post-industrial materials, which would show the gloves were likely made or repaired after Shakespeare’s time. And found none. Next, she used x-ray fluorescence technology to search for signs of chromium(Cr) or titanium(Ti), commonly used in 18th- and 19th- century tanning techniques. Again, she found none.
It would fit that Shakespeare would own a pair of fancy gloves. Clothes, as he once famously wrote, make the man. His plays made the money. His father was a glove maker. Plus, it was common for rich people to donate clothes, and even gloves, to theaters for costumes, Meyer said.
“If he really wore them, then we feel like we’re somehow in the presence of him,” Penn professor Zachary Lesser said about the gloves. But in his heart of hearts, he feels it’s a long shot that they’ll ever truly know. He hopes the renewed attention could unearth some historical evidence that could definitively tie the gloves to the hands of perhaps the greatest writer the world has ever known.
8. Why is it not surprising that the gloves at Penn may belong to Shakespeare?
A. The gloves have been kept there for years.
B. Penn has a history of seeking valuable relics.
C. Penn is known for owning rare Shakespearean items.
D. The gloves were donated by a Shakespearean scholar.
9. What was the significance of Gadomski’s work?
A. It ruled out non-Shakespearean possibilities.
B. It confirmed the gloves’ link to Shakespeare.
C. It secured the gloves’ long-term preservation.
D. It uncovered post-industrial glove-making methods.
10. What is the function of Paragraph 4?
A. To suggest another origin of the gloves.
B. To conclude the findings of the research.
C. To support the assumption about the gloves.
D. To provide more information about Shakespeare.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Where did the gloves Lead Us?
B. Did Shakespeare Own These gloves?
C. Shakespeare’s gloves Resurfaced at Penn
D. Long-forgotten gloves Found Their Owner
C 9. A 10. C 11. B

根据第二段中“However, that Penn may possess a Shakespearean treasure is no surprise. Its Shakespeare collections, mostly from the donations of H. H. Furness, the greatest Shakespearean scholar of his time, are world-famous. Among the Shakespearean jewels at Penn’s library is a 1611 edition of Hamlet, one of only 19 copies in the world.
根据第三段中“Examining the gloves under ultraviolet light, Gadomski searched for clues of any post-industrial materials, which would show the gloves were likely made or repaired after Shakespeare’s time. And found none. Next, she used x-ray fluorescence technology to search for signs of chromium(Cr) or titanium(Ti), commonly used in 18th- and 19th- century tanning techniques. Again, she found none. 故选A。
根据第四段“It would fit that Shakespeare would own a pair of fancy gloves. Clothes, as he once famously wrote, make the man. His plays made the money. His father was a glove maker. Plus, it was common for rich people to donate clothes, and even gloves, to theaters for costumes, Meyer said.
D
One of the nicest and most capable students I have had the pleasure of working with over the years is defending his Master’s paper tomorrow. In his research, Matt Dann explored how approach and avoidance goals relate to procrastination.
Typically, we define the more positively regarded approach goals as those things we intend to do to keep or acquire a positive state of affairs. For example, your approach goal may be to “exercise a little more in 2025 to enjoy the benefits of continued good health.” Alternatively, an avoidance goal around this exercise may be to “exercise a little more in 2025 to prevent heart disease.” Although both goals are related to a little more exercise, I think you would agree that these are psychologically different.
Matt’s research provided a psychological profile of avoidance goals in comparison to approach goals. The reason we thought this was an important thing to explore is simply that procrastination is often considered “task avoidance,” so it seemed to us that having more avoidance goals would be related to increased procrastination. Matt was also interested in the nature of avoidance goals that might explain why we would hypothesize that we would procrastinate more on this.
What Matt’s analysis revealed was that avoidance goals, compared to approach goals, were perceived as significantly less enjoyable, and the participants felt significantly less capable of pursuing them. If we anticipate that the task won’t be enjoyable and/or we aren’t capable of carrying it out, we’re likely to phrase it as an avoidance goal. Avoidance goals in turn lead to procrastination.
There are many things to learn from Matt’s study. The place to start, it would seem, to reduce our procrastination is to reshape our goals from avoidance to approach. I would conclude that reducing our procrastination requires enhancing both the meaning and manageability of the tasks in our lives. Instead of stopping with the feeling that you are not capable or the task lacks meaning, take the time to think about how you will do the task or how you can make it more enjoyable. This time will be well invested, I think.
12. What distinguishes approach and avoidance goals?
A. The activities involved in them.
B. The time length of working on them.
C. The motivation for engaging in them.
D. The difficulty level of achieving them.
13. Which is an approach goal?
A. To limit screen time to stop eye problems.
B. To study harder to keep from falling behind.
C. To wake up early to prevent a rushed morning.
D. To learn a new language to access more job offers.
14. Why are avoidance goals more likely to be procrastinated?
A. They are set without clear plans.
B. They demand more effort to reach.
C. They are considered less manageable.
D. They relate loosely with personal values.
15. What is the author’s suggestion for reducing procrastination?
A. Avoid setting long-term goals.
B. Rephrase tasks into urgent types.
C. Live life in a more enjoyable way.
D. Explore creative means to finish tasks.
C 13. D 14. C 15. D

Humans are now up against a series of new demanding issues that are leading dramatic change to our lifestyles: climate change, threatening infectious diseases, and increasing urbanization. ____16____ Hydroponic (水培的) farming has strong potential to relieve the threats these issues pose to our agricultural system.
Growing crops in near perfect conditions using controlled environment agriculture technology is one of the biggest benefits of hydroponic farming. Crops grown indoors and hydroponically can be grown anywhere at any time of the year. ____17____ Hydroponic farming has the potential to provide fresh, local food for areas with extreme droughts and low soil quality, such as in sub-Saharan Africa. ____18____ Keeping crop production in a controlled environment enables trained scientists and advanced climate control technology to improve the inputs of water, nutrients, and light fed to the plants. For example, sensors can measure the amount and nutrient content of the water that each plant consumes. This gives farmers insight into the amount of unused water and nutrients by the plants at each stage of growth. ____19____
____20____ For small, start-up farmers, entering into the hydroponic farming world can come with high costs associated with renting the space, loans, the renovation (翻修) of a building or space to accommodate the hydroponic structures, initial costs for materials, and costs of the labor and electricity to keep the farm up and running. While these entry costs are high, hydroponic farms have the potential to turn underused buildings into farmland to serve the community and create jobs.

根据前文“Crops grown indoors and hydroponically can be grown anywhere at any time of the year.(室内种植和水培的作物可以在一年中的任何时间在任何地方种植。)” D项“They are not subject to weather and soil conditions.(它们不受天气和土壤条件的影响。)”
根据前文“Hydroponic farming has the potential to provide fresh, local food for areas with extreme droughts and low soil quality, such as in sub-Saharan Africa.(水培农业有可能为极端干旱和土壤质量低的地区提供新鲜的当地食物,比如撒哈拉以南非洲地区。)” B项“Access to green vegetables is often limited there.(在那里获得绿色蔬菜的途径通常有限。)”
根据前文“For example, sensors can measure the amount and nutrient content of the water that each plant consumes. This gives farmers insight into the amount of unused water and nutrients by the plants at each stage of growth.(例如,传感器可以测量每种植物消耗的水量和营养成分。这使农民能够了解植物在每个生长阶段未使用的水和养分的数量。)”提到“传感器可监测植物消耗的水分和养分,了解未利用的量”,空格需体现“监测数据”的作用,形成“监测→分析→调整”的因果逻辑。F项“Thus, they can adjust input quality and quantity for plants.( 因此,他们可以调整植物的投入质量和数量。)”是监测数据的直接应用,“thus”承接前文“insight into the amount of unused water and nutrients”,说明水培农业“精准种植”的优势,符合“可控环境农业”的核心特点。故选F项。
根据前文全段论述水培农业的优势(不受环境限制、精准种植、缓解资源压力),后文“For small, start-up farmers, entering into the hydroponic farming world can come with high costs associated with renting the space, loans, the renovation(翻修)of a building or space to accommodate the hydroponic structures, initial costs for materials, and costs of the labor and electricity to keep the farm up and running.(对于刚起步的小农户来说,进入水培农业的世界可能会伴随着高昂的成本,包括租用空间、贷款、装修建筑或空间以容纳水培结构、材料的初始成本、以及维持农场运转的劳动力和电力成本。)” G项“However, these advantages do not come without challenges.( 然而,这些优势并非没有挑战。)”

Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Dear Chris,
I’m a student in your Western Art Appreciation course this term. I’ve noticed that quite a few classmates seem unengaged during class.
One possible reason is that the course materials are somewhat challenging, making it difficult for some to fully grasp and participate actively. Additionally, the lack of interactive activities may discourage students from voicing their opinions.
To improve this, I suggest incorporating more group discussions or case studies related to Western art, which could stimulate interest and encourage participation. Also, providing some background information or simpler explanations before diving into complex topics might help.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Arizona felt a knot of anxiety in her stomach as Halloween approached. Her friend Keenan was throwing a costume party, and while everyone in her class was excitedly discussing their well-crafted outfits, she remained utterly uninspired. The pressure to create something unique was overwhelming, and each passing day only deepened her despair.
The next couple of days, Arizona spent every spare minute trying to come up with the perfect costume idea. One afternoon, as she sat by her window in despair, she looked out of the window and caught sight of a small yellow bird land on the branch outside. Its cheerful song seemed to cut right through her worries. In that moment, her despair vanished, replaced by a clear vision. She immediately called her best friend, Mareya, and announced, “I know what I’m going to be — a beautiful yellow bird!” Mareya, who had decided on a tiger costume, was delighted to see her friend’s enthusiasm return.
Fueled by newfound excitement, Arizona devoted herself to the project. She found a piece of sparkling gold fabric for wings and a plain eye mask as a base. For hours, she worked with intense focus, carefully gluing soft yellow feathers and tiny, sparkling beads onto the mask. Each detail brought her creation to life, and she couldn’t help but smile with pride. The mask became more than a costume; it was a source of pride and the key to her confidence for the party.
On the day of the party, Arizona packed her finished wings and painstakingly crafted mask into a bag with great caution. She met Mareya after class, and together they headed to Keenan’s house, their excitement growing with every step. They rushed straight to the bathroom to put on the costumes. “Now for the finishing touch,” Mareya said, taking out her face-paint kit to paint tiger whiskers (胡须) on her cheeks.
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
That was when Arizona discovered her mask was missing.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mareya begged her not to leave, assuring her that she had a way to help.

That’s when Arizona discovered her mask was missing. Panic surged through her as she searched desperately through her bag, only to find the sparkling wings staring back at her from a pile of contents. The well-crafted mask was undeniably gone. The familiar knot of anxiety tightened in her stomach again, and hot tears welled up in her eyes. All her hard work, the hours of gluing feathers and beads, the newfound confidence — all seemed to vanish in an instant. “I have to go home,” she declared to Mareya, her voice thick with defeat, convinced that a flawed costume would ruin the entire experience and make her a subject of pity.
Mareya begged her not to leave, assuring her that she had a way to help. “Just give me a few minutes,” she pointed at her face-paint kit, “and you’ll be the most beautiful bird around!” Arizona hesitated for a moment, and finally nodded. With incredible skills, Mareya crafted a magnificent bird mask directly on Arizona’s skin. Arizona’s worry slowly faded as she looked in the mirror and saw a brand-new bird looking back. Together, they walked into the party, and the cheers from their classmates made Arizona realize that the true magic of Halloween lies not in flawless costumes, but in the joy of shared experiences and the creativity that emerges when things don’t go as planned.

D Explore creative means to finish tasks.

The next couple of days Arizona spent every spare minute trying to come up with the perfect costume idea.
