This energy transition (变革) is global, and the amount of renewable energy the world will need is “a little bit mind-blowing,” says mechanical engineer Keith Wipke at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It's estimated that the global demand for electricity could more than double by 2050. Fortunately, analyses suggest that renewables are up to the task. “We need to speed up the development of green energy, and it will all get used,” says Wipke.
技法
23.What does Wipke suggest regarding energy transition?
A.Limiting fuel consumption.
B.Putting more effort into renewables.
C.Improving energy efficiency.
D.Making electricity more affordable.

“Plants are in fashion right now,” says Dr. Melinda Knuth, a researcher from the University of Florida. “People who live in plantrich environments report a higher life satisfaction rating,” she says. “Adding more nature to our environment can change our mood and how we think.” Plants can improve our state of mind in a few ways but the biggest is by decreasing our level of cortisol, the stress hormone (激素) in our body.
“Students who are around plants perform better academically than students who are in a classroom without plants,” says Knuth. “This productivity also translates into the workplace for adults. Our study showed that there was a 30% decrease in sick leave for people who were in plantrich workplaces.”
技法
If you're among the groups of people who are enjoying the mental and physical health benefits of surrounding yourself with plants, don't beat yourself up if one (or a few!) doesn't make it. “Doctors practice medicine and lawyers practice law and you should allow yourself the practice it takes to sustain a plant. Tending to plants is an exercise in patience and learning. Be invested in taking care of it, but if it dies, go get another one,” Detrinidad says.
技法
29.What is one of Knuth's findings about plants?
A.They appeal more to students.
B.They purify the environment.
C.They raise the cortisol level.
D.They enhance productivity.
解析:根据题干“Knuth‘s findings”定位至第二段Knuth (克努特)的表述;根据“Students who are around plants perform better academically”及“This productivity also translates into the workplace for adults.”可知,在有绿植的环境中,学生学业表现更优,成年人工作效率更高。D项中“enhance productivity(提高生产力)”是对原文“perform better academically”和“productivity”的同义替换,概括了绿植对学习和工作效率的积极影响。故选D。

In the Chiltern Hills, Peterley Manor Farm has ditched traditional farming. Since Roger and Jane Brill took over the abandoned turkey farm in 1982, it's evolved from direct produce sales to a 40acre “wild spa” with ice baths, sauna, yurt yoga, and a barn café. Farm products now bring in minimal income.
“Social media has revolutionized our approach,” explains Katy Bill, who assumed management in 2014. Social media's demand for novel experiences has driven the farm's expansion into fitness bootcamps, outdoor cinemas, and naturebased nurseries.

Modern farmers increasingly rely on diversification: Nearly 70% of English farms now pursue nontraditional businesses (up from 56% a decade ago), with 1 in 5 deriving over half their revenue from such ventures. Activities include leasing land for agriculture or nonfarm uses (e.g., solar energy), with half offering nonagricultural spaces and 20% generating income from solar projects.
Consumerfocused services in particular are booming. Socialmedia use and a shift towards sustainability and wellness have driven demand for farm experiences. Sales at most farm shops have surpassed their previous levels; barns and farm venues across Britain outperformed hotels as wedding venues in 2023; many farms offer glamping camping for people who dislike camping in luxury shepherd's huts.

Farm diversification, though not new, is now urgent due to rising energy/labour costs, unpredictable weather, and reduced subsidies. DEFRA notes that 42% of farms rely on the BPS (a 2015 subsidy, now being phased out), with new plans pushing for greener operations.

Diversification brings new business for struggling farms but also exposes them to wider economic cycles and requires new skills—marketers and chefs replace farmhands. In one respect, though, things are not that different from oldfashioned farming. “The hospitality business is notoriously difficult,” says Ms Brill. “It's hard work and long hours.”

Research led by the University of Leeds has found that children do better at primary school if their fathers regularly spend time with them on interactive engagement activities like reading, playing, telling stories, drawing and singing.
Analyzing primary school test scores for five and seven-year-olds, the researchers used a representative sample of nearly 5,000 mother-father households in England. According to the research, dads who regularly drew, played and read with their threeyearolds helped their children do better at school by age five. Dads' being involved at age five also helped improve scores in sevenyearolds' Key Stage Assessments.

Dr Helen Norman's research shows fathers' active childcare boosts kids' primary school grades, urging shared care from early childhood.
Research shows dads' involvement boosts kids' school achievement regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, or income. While moms and dads engaging in the same activities had different effects, moms impacted young children's emotional and social behaviors more than academic performance.

The researchers recommend that dads spare as much time as they can to engage in interactive activities with their children each week. For busy, working dads, even just ten minutes a day could potentially have educational benefits. New research shows that Tai Chi, a slow Chinese martial art for flexibility and balance, is more effective than vigorous aerobic exercise in lowering blood pressure for prehypertensive people.
The new findings, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, add to a large body of research pointing to health benefits of Tai Chi. In the study, researchers in China randomly assigned 342 adults with prehypertension to one of two interventions (干预行为). The average age of participants was 49. Roughly half the people participated in supervised aerobic exercises, including jogging, climbing stairs and cycling. The other half were trained to practice Tai Chi. Both groups got onehour sessions four times a week.

After 12 months, those in the Tai Chi group saw bigger drops in their blood pressure than those in the aerobic exercise group. What's more, nearly 22% of the people who practiced Tai Chi saw their blood pressure fall to within normal range, compared with nearly 16% of people in the aerobic exercise group. And fewer patients in the Tai Chi group went on to develop hypertension than in the aerobic exercise group.
University of Arizona's Ruth TaylorPiliae studies Tai Chi's benefits for older adults with cardiovascular disease, noting mindbody practices relax the body and lower blood pressure via meditative effects.

Evidence suggests it can also help protect against cognitive decline and even boost memory. But you have to practice it consistently to reap the most benefit. “You have to have enough dose of Tai Chi,” TaylorPiliae says. “You can't just do it one hour, one time.”

Reporters rushed to find Rehan Sujeewa Staton a handful of years ago when news broke that a sanitation (公共卫生) worker had been accepted to Harvard Law School. Their various versions of a selfmade American success story went viral.
Now, as Staton prepares to graduate, he wants to make one thing crystal clear: It wasn't just him, but the people around him who made it all possible in very direct and sometimes surprising ways.
“I worked for a trash company, where my coworkers told me that I should go to college instead. I had a boss who let me leave work and go to school. I had a cousin who helped me study for the Law School Admission Test. My brother dropped out of college to help with the family finances. My dad sacrificed a lot for me. I could keep going down this list. I got lucky, but I made the most of my luck,” he said.

Staton knew life's uncertainties early. Raised by his father with his brother, the family faced financial struggles. After high school, he worked at a trash company, inspiring him to study at the University of Maryland while continuing to work. He cleaned garbage containers and collected trash from 4 to 7 am before classes. Driven to build a better life for his family, he applied to law school.
At Harvard Law School, Staton found support from professors, classmates, administrators, and staff. To express gratitude to the service staff, he raised funds to give each Harvard Law School service worker a $100 gift certificate and established “The Reciprocity Effect” to recognize similar workers at universities and corporate organizations.

This fall, while college students worldwide focus on typical activities like meeting professors or studying, University of Chicago students queued to borrow original art from the Smart Museum via the 70yearold Art To Live With program, pioneered by late Chicago collector Joseph R. Shapiro in 1958.
The program's background was simple: Shapiro thought students would come to appreciate art if they could live with it. So, he gave the university fifty artworks—mostly by European and American artists—to start a lending program open to all students in campus dormitories.

It was a big hit from the start, and within four years, the collection grew to more than 500 pieces—including many contemporary works that Shapiro felt would appeal to students. Many years later, the Smart Museum took over running the program.
The current lending collection, separate from the Smart's overall holdings, is entirely works on paper. Pieces rotate (轮换) in and out from year to year. Near the beginning of the fall quarter, the Smart provides an online and inperson preview of the works available from the collection.

Firstyear engineering student Chris Wong said he joined the queue for the experience itself, though he had his eye on Chagall and Miró pieces. Unfazed by having museum art in his dorm, he trusted the university's damage coverage and saw living with such works as an honor.
Many of the students are not art history or even humanities majors but are studying science or engineering. Museum director Malloy thinks the program shows students that art can be a part of their college experience regardless of their academic focus.

When planning her outfit for an upcoming awards ceremony, Lily Murphy had two concerns: how much she spent on clothes and the environmental impact. The solution was to rent a dress from someone.
Using an app called Hurr, Murphy rented a dress to attend her event. As a younger generation of consumers takes a more sustainable approach to what it wears and also demands to have fresh looks for its social media posts, networks that link buyers and sellers have emerged.

By Rotation, a Londonbased company, was started in 2019 by Eshita Kabra, who was concerned about the high levels of textile waste she saw. Users can borrow or lend designer dresses and bags, with the option of the item either posted or collected.
Hurr, which Murphy used, operates in a similar way. Pieces have to be less than two years old and in “excellent condition”. The rental fee is based on the price of the piece, and the fees are 15 percent for both sides. There is also a service fee of £5.15, a drycleaning charge of £10, shipping of £10 and a damage protection fee of £5, which is optional.

If something is damaged, the owner can bill the borrower on By Rotation. “If they refuse to pay, the borrower's details can be handed over to the lender for them to pursue the matter in the small claims court, although this has not happened yet,” Kabra says. Hurr founder Victoria Prew says borrowers are asked to pay the market value if an item is damaged beyond repair.
What you won't find on the new generation of lending apps are highstreet brands where shoppers can buy pieces for the same amount they would pay to rent a highend piece.
