An old saying used for forecasting(预测)the weather says, "Red sky at night, sailors'
delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors(水手)take warning.” Is the saying true? It turns out that it is. A red sky at sunset may mean that there are clear skies to the west where the sun sets. A red sky at sunrise usually means that the clear weather has already passed, so storms might be coming.
Forecasting the weather has been practiced for thousands of years. In the 5th century BC, the Greeks sent out forecasts to sailors. They used signs in nature to forecast the weather. But today, meteorologists(气象学者)send exact forecasts further ahead of time. They use scientific tools to study weather conditions around the world and make forecasts. Pilots, farmers and many other people depend on these forecasts. Luckily, we can simply look at our smartphone or turn on the TV to find out what kind of weather is coming.
If you are looking for some signs of the weather, pay attention to nature. There are two basic rules used in weather forecasting: Weather generally moves from west to east, and low air pressure(压力)usually means rain or snow. As a result, pay attention to the signs. If rainbows form in the west at sunrise, the sun is on the way. Smell the flowers— their smell is stronger in wet air. What are the ants doing? Are they moving to higher ground? This could mean a drop in air pressure. Are the birds flying low or high? Falling air pressure may influence birds' ears, so they fly low. And if the sky is red at sunset, you might plan a picnic for the next day!
49. What is the old saying about?
A. The beauty of sunrise. B. The night sky.
C. The signs of the weather. D. The sailors' work.
50. How does the writer develop his idea in Paragraph 2?
A. By listing the reasons for terrible weather.
B. By telling a true story about weather forecasting.
C. By introducing different ways of forecasting the weather.
D. By mentioning the difficulties in forecasting the weather.
51. What do we know from the last paragraph?
A. It' ll be sunny if ants move to higher places.
B. The smells of flowers are stronger in wet air.
C. Birds fly higher because of the low air pressure.
D. It' ll rain if rainbows form in the west at sunrise.
52. What is the writer's purpose in writing the text?
A. To encourage people to get close to nature.
B. To express the need for weather forecasting.
C. To explain nature can tell us about the weather.
D. To discuss how important weather forecasting is.

While dogs openly show joy or sadness through different expressions, telling a cat's feelings from its face is often hard, even for its owners. Now, researchers from Canada's University of Guelph say that cats also express feelings on their faces— one just has to learn how to read them!
For their study, Professors Lee Niel and Georgia Mason asked 6300 people from 85 countries to fill out a questionnaire and watch 20 short cat videos from YouTube. Each video took a close look at just the cat's face— its eyes, nose, and mouth— and gave no information about its environment. The viewers did not have to tell the cat's exact feelings but just decide whether it was in a positive state or a negative state or if they were unsure.
The researchers, who published their findings in the November 2019 issue of Animal Welfare, found that only 13 percent, or 819 people who took part in the study were able to read the-cats' feelings correctly over 75 percent of the time. Further research showed that the so-called"cat whisperers" were mainly women and vet s. Younger adults also seemed to be able to read the expressions better than older ones.
"In the study, women generally scored better than men. Early research also showed that women appear to be better at understanding feelings, both in humans and dogs,"said Mason. Surprisingly, being a cat owner did not help people who took part in the study, which means a strong connection to the animal did not necessarily mean better understanding of its feelings.
Luckily, all is not lost for cat owners who are unable to tell their pet's feelings. The researchers believe the skills are not natural but learned over time."This is important to be able to do because it could help strengthen the connection between owners and cats, and so improve cat care,"said Niel.
53. What should people who took part in the study do after watching cat videos?
A. Decide the cat's state of feelings. B. Tell the cat's exact feelings.
C. Tell the cat's living conditions. D. Tell the cat's personality.
54. Who does"cat whisperers" most probably refer to?
A. People who are likely to be vet s.
B. People who are good at raising a pet cat.
C. People who have pet cats.
D. People who can understand cats' feelings.
55. Why did women perform better than men in the study?
A. Women have more time to spend with pets.
B. Women have strong love for animals.
C. Women have a talent for understanding feelings.
D. Women have a strong will to understand animals.
56. What's the researchers' opinion according to the passage?
A. Raising a cat helps people better understand cats' feelings.
B. People can learn the skill of understanding cats' feelings.
C. Men can better understand cats' feelings than women.
D. Cats owners have a better understanding of their cats.

①On the southern and western beaches of South Africa, there are small white huts(棚子). People build these huts to protect African penguin families from the hot sun.
②African penguins spend most of their time in the cool water of the South Atlantic Ocean. But in order to breed(繁殖)and incubate(孵化)their eggs, they have to be on land. Unluckily, the birds' black coats take in heat from the burning African sun. If they return to the water to cool off, they cannot protect their eggs and young chickens from predators(捕食者).
③▲, the penguins would usually dig holes in layers of guano(海鸟粪). However, in the 1800s, people collected most of the guano and sold it for money. Because of this loss and other dangers such as overfishing of their prey(猎物), the number of the penguins falls from about three million to less than 50,000.
④The African Penguin Nest Project began to solve the problem by building artificial nests(人工巢箱). The nests are small round huts just large enough to fit two penguin parents and their chickens. White paint on the outside of the nests reflects(反射)sunlight, keeping the inside at a safe temperature of 35℃ or lower.
⑤The first artificial nests were placed on the beaches in 2018.“In only a few minutes, penguins were running into them,” Kevin Graham, head of the African Penguin Nest Project, said.“That tells you how much the penguins want to find a safe place to nest.”
⑥Now people have built more than 500 nests on the beaches, and at least 99% of them are being used. Local experts say the huts are helping penguin chickens survive and are an important way to save the penguins.“It's a big part of it,” Graham said,“but there has to be more.”
57. Why do people build small white huts on beaches in South Africa?
A. To make the beaches more beautiful.
B. To ask more visitors to come to the beaches.
C. To save African penguin families from the hot sun.
D. To let more penguins live on land instead of in water.
58. Choose the best answer to fill in the blank ▲ in Paragraph 3?
A. To stay safe and cool B. To save food for winter
C. To protect their black coats D. To find a place for sleeping
59. What is the important meaning of the white paint on the outside of the nests?
A. It helps to keep the inside of the nests cool.
B. It helps the penguins to breed more often.
C. It makes penguins run into the nests willingly.
D. It makes predators unable to see the nests.
60. Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
A.①/②③④⑤/⑥ B.①/②③/④⑤⑥
C.①②/③④/⑤⑥ D.①②③/④⑤/⑥

八、根据文章内容,回答问题 (每道题不超过10个单词)
Twenty years ago in Costa Rica, three girls found a baby sloth(树懒)on a road. The little animal's mother was killed by a car. These girls took the baby sloth to Judy, the owner of a hotel. Judy wanted to help, but she didn't know how to look after the sloth, so she called the zoo. With the help of the zoo, Judy took good care of the baby sloth. She named the baby sloth Buttercup.
After her first success, more people brought Judy wounded sloths or baby sloths they found. Judy then opened a help centre. Today, the help centre has saved more than 500 sloths.
Sloths live in the forests of Central America. We can also see them in South America. They hang onto the trees with their claws(爪子). There are two main types of sloths. You can know them by the number of their claws. Sleths hardly move. They spend most of their time sleeping in the trees.
But now, with the increase in population, human beings cause a lot of problems for these slow and quiet animals. The main problem is that the forests are becoming smaller and smaller. When trees are cut down, sloths will fall and hurt themselves. Some sloths live near human beings and they sometimes are hit by cars or killed bv dogs.
