“What would you really like to do? “Sandrine Dusang’s mother asked her six-year-old daughter, who would cry every time she went to dance class. “I want to play football, “she replied. Soon she was one of the very few girls kicking a ball around in her village club near Vichy, France. When Dusang turned 13 and was no longer allowed to play it with boys, her mother drove her three times a week to train with other girls in Moulins an hour away.
In 2003, after graduating from CNFE Clairefontaine, the French national female football college, Dusang was picked out to play for France. But because she earned only a small match fee for each game she played, she had to work as a marketing assistant for the club. “I’d work in the office, and run to my training,” she recalls, only too aware it wasn’t the same for the men.
Dusang stood for France in 47 international matches between 2003 and 2011, but today, she fights for equal opportunities in the game. Her activism has taken several forms. She spent four years writing for a French news site, promoting (促进) women’s football and diversity in sport, and volunteering for Equal Playing Field, an international organization that focuses on sports development for women worldwide.
Now, 20 years after starting her sports, Dusang is fighting to get recognition for Corsica’s first female-only club. She is both a player and co-president of Feminine Esprit Club (FEC) Bastia. Sandrine Dusang has also used her position at FEC Bastia to communicate important messages and values. Players’ shirts carry a message in local language promoting gender (性别) equality. It translates as “Everyone can play.”
4. Which best describes Sandrine Dusang’s mother?
A. Strict. B. Adventurous. C. Graceful. D. Supportive.
5. What did Dusang do after graduation in 2003?

D She was chosen to play for an international club.
6. How did Dusang fight for equal opportunities in football?

C. By selling shirts with special messages. D. By volunteering for different football clubs.
7. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To call for gender equality. B. To show a way to success.
C. To promote female football. D. To introduce a great woman.

To fight against learning loss over the summer, Tennessee is funding the delivery of surprise books to keep almost a quarter million kids engaged with reading.
The Govemor’s Early Literacy Foundation (GELF) expanded its K-3 Home Library program to now include all rising 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students in a public school. In cooperation with Scholastic publishing, the program will deliver 1. 2 million books to more than 200, 000 students, teachers, and librarians. Six packages consisting of grade-level books will be delivered directly to the homes of participants, at no cost to families or the 152 school districts.
“My son struggles to read but is making improvements by the week,” said one parent from perfect time!” A Morgan County educator said, “Many of our students do not have access to books at home so this is a great program to get books into students’ hands.”
“If we don’t get reading right everything else can go wrong,” said James Pond, GELF President. “Our goal is to promote a culture of reading in Tennessee by meeting students where they are with the books and resources they need to become lifelong learners-and we hope other states look to us as a leader in early literacy (读写能力) efforts.”
Research shows that students who do not read over the summer lose two to three months of reading ability-but reading four to six books has the potential to stop or change this “summer slide”. When schools are closed for the summer, access to books diminishes. So making the expansion of this program is very significant.
The books were selected by a group of 28 diverse Tennessee educators. With this program, Tennessee is showing that it takes vacation learning loss seriously and making efforts to improve literacy rates for its young students. It’s a model that other states would be willing to follow.
8. What is K-3 Home Library program aimed at?
A. Delivering books to remote schools.
B. Improving student attendance at school.
C. Encouraging kids to read in vacations.
D. Building libraries for low-income families.
9. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. The program is faced with many challenges.
B. The program has received positive comments.
C. People have high expectations for the program.
D. People have divided opinions about the program.
10. What does the underlined word “diminishes” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Disappears. B. Decreases. C. Is blocked. D. Is replaced.
11. Which statement would the author agree with?
A. The program should be promoted more widely.
B. Vacation learning loss is very serious in America.
C. Schools should remain open in summer vacations.
D. Kids are overloaded with homework in their vacation.

A study published in the journal Nature Communications, details how tiger sharks helped a team of researchers discover the world’s largest known seagrass meadows (草地), located in the warm waters of the Bahamas.
Tiger sharks are fast swimmers and spend around 70 percent of their time swimming over seagrass meadows. Researchers used satellite tags to track individual tiger sharks as they crossed the Bahamas with 360-degree cameras. The satellite-tagged tiger sharks swam more than 2,485 miles in both regions of the Bahama Banks, located near Andros Island, Grand Bahama, and Great Abaco. Besides, these big fish can explore deep waters. These allowed the researchers to see into areas that aren’t easily accessible by humans.
The sharks’swimming in the grass helped the team map out a seagrass meadow that was even bigger than they had imagined. The Bahamas Seagrass Meadow is one continuous ecosystem that covers 35,521 square miles across the Bahama Banks. This study shows a 41 percent increase from the previous projected global amount of seagrass.
The findings suggest that all of this greenery plays a major role in absorbing some of the excess (过多的) carbon in the ocean due to burning fossil fuels. One study suggests seagrass can remove carbon 30 times faster than the rainforest. Seagrass also supports the ocean’s biodiversity and fish stocks. In the Bahamas, for example, these meadows serve as key nursery grounds for a host of commercially relevant marine species such as the Nassau Grouper, Queen Conch, Lobster, Manatees, and also they serve as key habitat for threatened species like shark and sea turtles.
The work helps protect the sea grass, and also shows off a powerful way to explore the ocean. “The health of the ocean is clearly linked to the ocean’s top predators (捕食者),” says Beneath the Waves project manager and study co-author David Harris. “By protecting these animals, and learning about their daily lives, we have discovered one of the largest marine findings in the ocean over the last 20 years. Imagine what else we will find as we continue to protect and partner with sharks!”
12. What is a reason for researchers choosing tiger sharks in the study?
A. They mainly feed on grass.
B. They are the fastest animals.
C. They are easily accessible by humans.
D. They swim in seagrass most of the time.
13. What was unexpected for the researchers?
A. The size of the meadow. B. The depth of the ocean.
C. The sharks’ swimming speed. D. The sharks intelligence.
14. What can we learn about seagrass from paragraph 4?
A. It is much more important than the rainforest.
B. It provides food and shelter for sea creatures.
C. It plays a significant role in cleaning the water.
D. It keeps the amount of carbon steady in the ocean.
15. Why does David Harris stress the protection of marine animals like sharks?
A. Their populations are decreasing quickly.
B. Humans regard them as a major food source.
C. They could help us learn more about the ocean.
D. Seagrass meadows would not survive without them.
