Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
With so much free time on our hands during lockdown, many of us have entertained the idea of knowing more about the world. Learning a foreign language is a good choice. Here are a few examples, in order of time it takes people to learn them.
Latin languages (about 600 hours)
The popular Latin languages — Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese — require about 600 hours to learn. Of these, Spanish and Italian are the easiest for English speakers to learn. They are followed by Portuguese and finally French.
Latin languages share many words with English. However, those shared words look or sound similar, but have different meanings over time.
Greek (1,100 hours)
Modern Greek is maybe the easiest language to learn that uses a different alphabet (字母表). It is also a language that has contributed many words to English. Indeed, the president of Greece once gave two speeches at an international meeting that included just Greek loan words (外来词) as well as the unavoidable basic English.
Japanese (2, 200 hours)
Counting objects in Japanese depends on whether they are long and thin (like “roads”), small and round (like “apples”), thin and flat (like “sheets of paper”), and hundreds more examples.
What Japanese you speak also depends on your gender (性别). There’s a “rough” language for men and a more “ladylike” language for women, but you must understand both.
Chinese (2, 200 hours)
Each Chinese written word is hardly understandable when spoken between a Mandarin (普通话) speaker in Beijing and a Cantonese speaker in Guangdong. If you think that's strange, consider our number system: the symbol “2” is widely understood but it’s pronounced “two” in English and “duex” in French.
37. For an English speaker, which of the following is the easiest to learn?
A. Japanese. B. French. C. Greek. D. Italian.
38. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The same word in two languages always has the same meaning.
B. The English language and the Greek language use the same alphabet.
C. Objects are counted differently in Japanese according to their shapes.
D. A Mandarin speaker and a Cantonese speaker write Chinese differently.
39. Which foreign language takes the most time to learn?
A. China and Japanese. B. China and Greek. C. Greek and Japanese. D. Greek and Latin languages.
40. The purpose of this passage is to tell English speakers ________.
A. how to learn some foreign languages
B. why they must learn a foreign language
C. some information on the difficulty of foreign languages
D. not to choose an Asian language to learn as it is too hard

A father from New York, Nick Tomasso, accidentally started a yearly photo tradition with his son Jackson that shows how the boy grows over time. The photos, which began when Jackson was a baby, feature the two wearing matching Batman T-shirts.
It all started by chance. When Jackson was very little, Nick once wore a Batman T-shirt and also dressed his son in a Batman onesie (连体衣). He thought it would be a cute picture and took one. The next year, they happened to wear new Batman shirts again, so Nick took another photo without remembering the first one. By the third year, Nick realized he had created a tradition without planning to. He then decided to continue it every year.
Nick had shared these photos on his private social media over the years. Recently, he posted a collage (拼图) of the pictures on Reddit, and the story became very popular online. Many people loved seeing the changes in the father and son.
For Nick, the best part is looking back at how his son has grown. He also finds the tradition a good way to bond with Jackson, as they both like superheroes. Nick plans to keep taking these photos as long as possible. He thinks it will be funny to see when Jackson becomes taller than him.
Though Nick doesn’t have special plans for the photos, he may make a collage or a video for his son’s important birthdays. For him, the tradition is not just about pictures — it’s about recording time and the love between a father and his son.

For many people, spending time in nature can be a relaxing, enjoyable experience. Immersing (沉浸) oneself in the green field of grass, or the shade of a forested path can be truly calming and health-giving.
Recently, researchers from the University of Exeter and the University of Vienna have published a study in Nature Communications that showed not only does being in nature help reduce discomfort, but looking at nature could have a similar effect.
The study showed that people who viewed images of nature experienced less discomfort than those who saw images of a city or an indoor office. In addition, examinations of the participants’ brains also showed changes in brain responses associated with dealing with discomfort. This means that seeing nature has an effect on discomfort, just like being in nature does. This is welcome news for people who do not live near green spaces.
However, a few months later, the researchers published another study, this time in discomfort, showing that scenes of nature in virtual (虚拟的) reality had more discomfort-killing power than 2D scenes.
In order to test how virtual reality affects the sensation of discomfort, the researchers set up an experiment with 29 healthy participants, who were shown two different types of nature scenes, one in virtual reality and the other in 2D, after discomfort was delivered to their forearms via electric shocks.
The researchers found that the life-like virtual reality scenes reduced the development and feeling of discomfort in the participants. In fact, the virtual reality was almost two times as effective as the 2D scenes were.
There are many effects of these studies, especially concerning how people sense and experience discomfort. However, more importantly, there are also potential practical effects of the studies. Though getting out into nature can be helpful in terms of treating discomfort, there are many people in the world who suffer from long-term discomfort and are unable to go into nature.
45. What did the two universities’ study find about looking at natural scenes?
A. It strengthens the sense of discomfort.
B. It changes the structure of the brain.
C. It makes people feel bored with cities.
D. It works like real nature in easing discomfort.
46. Why are the participants’ brains examined?
A. To compare the brain structures of different people.
B. To improve the brain’s ability to process discomfort.
C. To measure the brain’s responses to different images.
D. To locate the brain areas responsible for viewing nature.
47. Based on the studies in the passage, what will doctors probably do to help patients with limited movement?
A. Provide them with recovery training.
B. Bring nature to them.
C. Give discomfort killers to them.
D. Show them various forms of entertainment.
48. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Discomfort Management of Modern Technologies
B. The Health-giving Power of Real Natural Environments
C. The Response Changes of Brains When Dealing with Discomfort
D. The Discomfort-reducing Effect of Various Nature-Based Scenes
【答案】45. D 46. C 47. B 48. D

An Immersive Journey into Tradition
I am Li Wen, a Grade 10 student. I am writing to recommend the Chinese Flower Arrangement workshop.
I expect a hands-on experience where we can learn to select branches and flowers, arranging them into artistic patterns that reflect nature.
My reasons are twofold. Firstly, different from Western styles, Chinese flower arrangement focuses on the harmony between nature and humans, a core value of our culture. Secondly, the process is incredibly relaxing. It can help us relieve academic pressure and cultivate inner peace.
I believe this activity will be a wonderful way to appreciate our traditional culture.

Indeed the president of Greece once gave two speeches at an international meeting that included just Greek loan words (外来词) as well as the unavoidable basic English.
C some information on the difficulty of foreign languages
D not to choose an Asian language to learn as it is too hard
(B)
A father from New York, Nick Tomasso, accidentally started a yearly photo tradition with his son Jackson that shows how the boy grows over time. The photos, which began when Jackson was a baby, feature the two wearing matching Batman T-shirts.
It all started by chance. When Jackson was very little Nick once wore a Batman T-shirt and also dressed his son in a Batman onesie (连体衣).
41. How did the tradition begin according to the first two paragraphs?
A. Jackson asked his father to start it.
B. It was suggested by one Internet user.
C. It happened by accident in the first two years.
D. Nick planned it carefully for his social media.
42. What does Nick enjoy most about this tradition?
A. Becoming famous online.
B. Teaching his son about superheroes.
C. Buying new Batman shirts every year.
D. Seeing his son’s growth over the years.
43. What does the underlined word “bond” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Connect. B. Argue. C. Compete. D. Disagree.
44. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. The interest of superhero kids.
B. The story of a father-son photo tradition.
C. The collection of different Batman shirts.
D. The role of Reddit in a father-son tradition.
