For many professional athletes, retirement (退役) means saying goodbye to training and competitions. But for Shang Chunsong, former captain of China’s national women’s gymnastics team and an Olympic bronze medalist, it means the beginning of an exciting journey in another sport-parkour (跑酷) .
On Nov 17, 28-year-old Shang won the gold medal in women’s freestyle at the Parkour World Championships in Japan, becoming the first Chinese athlete to win a world championship in parkour.
Before becoming a rising star in parkour, Shang had a great career in gymnastics, marked by both success and regrets. She joined the national gymnastics team in 2010 and became the captain of the women’s team.
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Shang helped China bring home the bronze medal in the team event. However, she finished fourth in the women’s individual all- around competition, missing out on a medal. Such regrets became a burden (负担) for Shang. Although she had many victories in national competitions, she has never won a world championship. She retired from gymnastics in 2022 and decided to switch to parkour, an exciting extreme sport.
Years of hard training in gymnastics prepares Shang’s move to parkour, as both sports require skills and flexibility (灵活性) . Compared to the strict rules of gymnastics, parkour has a more open style, giving Shang a strong sense of freedom. However, “the biggest challenge of the extreme sport is overcoming fear,” Shang said. Parkour landings occur on hard surfaces, greatly increasing the risk of injury.
While parkour training often leaves Shang injured, she continues to chase her passion. Her next goal is to win gold at the next World Games. As she said, “I dream of seeing parkour become an Olympic event one day — hopefully while I’m still competing”.
4. What is the main purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To describe the common challenges athletes face after retirement.
B. To provide detailed background on Shang’s gymnastics career.
C. To compare the difficulty between gymnastics and parkour.
D. To introduce Shang’s unusual career shift from gymnastics to parkour.
5. According to Shang Chunsong, what is the biggest challenge in parkour?
A. Facing the fear of getting injured. B. Following strict scoring rules.
C Lacking previous relevant experience. D. Balancing it with her past gymnastics career.
6. What can be inferred about Shang’s future plan?
A. She hopes to coach young gymnasts in China.
B. She plans to retire after the next World Games.
C. She wants to compete until parkour enters the Olympics.
D. She wants to focus on winning more national titles.
7. What can we learn from Shang’s story?
A Success in one sport ensures quick success in another.
B. Past regrets can be turned into a new beginning.
C. Overcoming fear and training hard can lead to new achievements.
D. Older athletes should take up parkour to feel free.
C
Many penguin species (种类) live together, but pairs of yellow-eyed penguins try hard to be alone. They stay deep in New Zealand’s forests where other penguins cannot see them. When pairs meet again at the nest after one has been away fishing, they greet each other with a loud, sharp cry. Crying behavior may not seem lovely, but these penguins are considered a treasure in Maori culture.
But one of New Zealand’s favorite birds is also one of its rarest (稀少的) . The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) says that only between 2, 600 and 3, 000 yellow-eyed penguins remain. In the past 15 years, their numbers have fallen sharply by about 75 percent. This is the result of several problems. Red cod, once an important food for the penguins, has become fewer and fewer. Penguins also die each year in fishing nets. Two diseases, avian diphtheria (禽白喉) and a mysterious deadly lung disease, also affect them. Janelle Wierenga, a scientist at the University of Otago, says possible medicines are likely still years away.
To save them, wildlife hospitals and protection groups have taken every single yellow-eyed penguin baby from its nest and placing it under human care for about the first week of life. They are given medicines to cure mouth sores caused by the bird disease. They are also fed red cod to make them stronger. It is unclear how, but this special care stops them from getting the lung disease.
“I feel that the diseases are a secondary problem; the main problem is the penguins don’t get enough food,” says Thomas Mattern, an ecologist at the University of Otago.
In 2023, the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital took care of 214 yellow-eyed penguin babies. Without human care, 50 to 70 percent of them would have died. But these efforts can only help for a short time. “We are trying to buy this population as much time as we can,” Lisa Argilla, the hospital’s senior wildlife animal doctor says. “You feel like you’re fighting a battle you can’t win, but we couldn’t live with ourselves if we didn’t fight for these penguins.”
8. What is special about yellow-eyed penguins?
A. They like to live in large groups.
B. They prefer to stay hidden and avoid other penguins.
C. They do not make any sound when they meet.
D. They only live alone near the ocean.
9. What is true according to this paragraph 2?
A. The population of yellow-eyed penguins is now growing.
B. Red cod is still an easy-to-find food source for the penguins.
C. Effective medicines for their diseases are not yet ready.
D Fishing nets are not a problem for the penguins anymore.
10. Why are yellow-eyed penguin babies taken from their nests?
A. To teach them how to catch fish.
B. To protect them from being attacked by other penguins.
C. To help them get used to human contact.
D. To give them medicine and food to prevent diseases.
11. What is Lisa Argilla’s attitude toward the current conservation work?
A. Determined despite the challenges faced.
B. Doubtful about the effectiveness of human efforts.
C. Satisfied with the progress already made.
D. Confident that the rescue work will be successful in the end.
D
In medicine, quickly finding out what is wrong and treating it can save lives — and AI is now making that possible faster than ever. National Health Service England reports that new AI software that can read and understand brain scans (扫描) could make stroke recovery rates (中风康复率) three times higher.
This important improvement comes from the technology’s ability to analyse, study, and share scan data almost immediately, helping doctors decide on the right treatment much faster.
A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked, and the damage gets worse quickly — about 2 million brain cells (细胞) die every minute during an attack. The longer time the treatment takes, the higher the risk of lasting problems with moving, speaking, or remembering.
To deal with this, all 107 stroke centers across England have now started using this AI system. It finds small details that are hard to see in brain scans that human eyes might miss, immediately judging how serious a stroke is and suggesting the right treatments. As a result, the time between first symptoms (症状) and treatment has been cut by up to one hour — a very important gain in stroke care.
“This use of AI can slash the time from someone showing symptoms of stroke to getting treatment by up to an hour. When it comes to strokes, every second counts,” said Care Minister Stephen Kinnock.
The good effects go beyond speed. Early data show that hospitals using the software have seen recovery rates rise sharply from 16% to 48%. In other words, many more patients are becoming able to care for themselves after a stroke because of faster, AI-assisted decisions.
This progress shows AI’s game-changing role in healthcare. Machines can study medical images faster and more carefully than humans, finding key details in seconds. In emergencies like stroke, where timing is everything, that ability doesn’t just make results better — it saves lives. The use of this technology across England is a strong example of how artificial intelligence can support human skill and make a real difference when it matters most.
12. What is the main advantage of using AI in stroke treatment according to the passage?
A. It makes hospital treatment cheaper.
B. It reduces the number of stroke patients.
C. It can completely replace doctors in diagnosis.
D. It helps doctors decide on treatment faster.
13. Why is time so important in treating strokes?
A. Because strokes only happen to older people.
B. Because brain cells die very quickly during a stroke.
C. Because AI needs time to learn from new scans.
D. Because there are not enough doctors in England.
14. What does the underlined word “slash” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. reduce sharply B. increase slightly
C. measure carefully D. ignore completely
15. Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the text?
A. Strokes are becoming less common because of AI technology.
B. AI will probably replace doctors in stroke care soon.
C. England has used AI in all of its hospitals to treat strokes.
D. AI can greatly help doctors find and treat strokes faster.

I clearly remember the day I went to school with a big change—my very first pair of eye glasses. I was filled with excitement eager to show them off to my classmates. I had chosen a pair of pink-framed glasses, thinking they would look fantastic on me. Little did I know that I would become the object of ridicule (嘲笑).
The reason behind getting the glasses was my poor eyesight. My teacher had repeatedly criticized me for not completing my work accurately. Sitting at the back of the class, I couldn’t copy words and proper grammar from the blackboard because everything was too blurry (模糊的) for me to see. More often than not, my deskmate would read every phrase aloud to me so that I could write them down, like a parrot.
Wearing those glasses was like stepping into a 3D cinematic world: I could see everything clearly. However, on the day I wore my glasses to school, all the boys laughed and I could see them hiding their faces with hurtful smiles. Several girls kindly told me that my glasses looked good on me, but I knew they were all telling white lies. Nevertheless,I needed the glasses more than I wanted them.
A month passed, but my classmates still weren’t used to seeing me wear glasses. Insecurity led me to take them off during lunch break or after class. I admitted that I had started to hate my glasses, but little did I know that my decision to wear them would change the life of one of my friends.
On a Monday morning, my friend Jane came to me, looking at me with curiosity. When I asked what got her so interested, she pointed to my glasses and said she wanted to try them on. Without hesitation, I handed my glasses to her. As she put them on, her mouth dropped open in surprise.

C. Lacking previous relevant experience.
A. Success in one sport ensures quick success in another.
B. Past regrets can be turned into a new beginning.
C. Overcoming fear and training hard can lead to new achievements.
D. Older athletes should take up parkour to feel free.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7.

B Red cod is still an easy-to-find food source for the penguins.
C. Effective medicines for their diseases are not yet ready.
D. Fishing nets are not a problem for the penguins anymore.

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. D

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I clearly remember the day I went to school with a big change—my very first pair of eye glasses. I was filled with excitement, eager to show them off to my classmates.
注意:
1.续写的词数应为150左右;

Puzzled, I asked her what was so surprising.

The following week, I was amazed to see Jane wearing a pair of glasses too.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Puzzled, I asked her what was so surprising. She told me that everything seemed so clear and she could see the blackboard without any difficulty. “But you’ve always been able to see the blackboard”, I said. Jane shook her head and replied, “No, I couldn’t. But I didn’t want to say anything because it made me feel less cool.” I felt sorry for her and offered to lend her my glasses whenever she needed them. However, she thanked me and said that her parents would buy her a pair.
The following week, I was amazed to see Jane wearing a pair of glasses too. It was then that I realized that we had both been afraid of being different and not cool enough. Now, however, we were happy to be able to see things clearly. We even went to the eye doctor together to get our eyes checked. From this experience, I learned that if you are ever faced with a problem, don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice.
