Martha Wells was born on September 1, 1964 and is a Texas SF/ fantasy writer. She has published a number of fantasy novels, young adult novels, nonfiction essays, etc. Her novels have been translated into twelve languages. Martha is praised for the complex, realistically detailed societies she creates; this is often credited to her academic background in anthropology (人类学). She has won four Hugo Awards, two Nebula Awards and three Locus Awards for her science fiction series The Murderbot Diaries.
The Murderbot Diaries has become an incredibly popular series — but newer fans might not realize she’s been writing science fiction and fantasy works, including the Books of the Raksura and many more, for more than 30 years. “That’s really been interesting, because there are people who don’t know I did anything else,” Martha says. “I’ve been lucky enough to pen 20 or 23 novels at this point.” Martha laughs. “And there’ve been people who are all: ‘I’ m going to go look at all the other stuff.’ I’m grateful they’re willing to give my older work a chance.”
Golden Voice Kevin R. Free, who has narrated all of the audiobooks in the series, says that fans regularly tell him they’ve listened over and over again. “When people say, ‘It’s comforting to me when I listen to this,’ I just feel so happy that I’m bringing people comfort.” Kevin stresses that he’s also a fan of the books, and he’s quick to give full credit to Martha. “I’m only interpreting what Martha wrote. I could not do what I do without her mind and her words.”
Besides her long occupation as a writer, Martha is also a reader and a fan. She regularly champions fellow authors on social media, and it’s clear that she has high hopes for the future of the fantasy genre (体裁). “So much of the new fantasy fiction by Asian authors and African authors is very exciting to people because it’s just a divergent way of telling fantasy, and telling those stories, and it just makes it all new and fresh and interesting again. It’s energizing for the genre.”
4. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. Martha’s experience. B. Martha’s achievement.
C. The reason for Martha’s success. D. The awards Martha received.
5. What can be inferred from Kevin’s words?
A. The series is worth listening. B. He achieved less than Wells.
C. He owed his success to Wells. D. The audiobooks brought him fame.
6. What does the underlined word “divergent” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Different. B. Gentle. C. Practical. D. Popular
7. Which of the following can best describe Martha Wells?
A. Lucky and productive. B. Learned and disciplined.
C. Modest and supportive. D. Humorous and hardworking.
B 5. C 6. A 7. C

根据文章第一段“She has published a number of fantasy novels, young adult novels, nonfiction essays, etc. Her novels have been translated into twelve languages. Martha is praised for the complex, realistically detailed societies she creates; this is often credited to her academic background in anthropology (人类学). She has won four Hugo Awards, two Nebula Awards and three Locus Awards for her science fiction series The Murderbot Diaries.(她已出版了多部奇幻小说、青少年小说及非虚构散文等作品,其小说被翻译成十二种语言。Martha以其构建复杂而真实细致的社会体系而备受赞誉,这常归功于她的人类学学术背景。凭借科幻系列《杀手机器人日记》,她已荣获四次雨果奖、两次星云奖和三次轨迹奖。)”可知,本段主要介绍了Martha发表的作品类型、作品翻译成的语言数量、学术背景对创作的影响,以及她所获得的奖项。故整体是在概括她的主要成就。故选B。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Kevin stresses that he’s also a fan of the books, and he’s quick to give full credit to Martha. “I’m only interpreting what Martha wrote. I could not do what I do without her mind and her words.”(Kevin强调自己也是该系列的忠实读者,并迅速将全部功劳归于Martha。
故选A。
根据文章第二段““And there’ve been people who are all: ‘I’ m going to go look at all the other stuff.’ I’m grateful they’re willing to give my older work a chance.”(“有些人会说:‘我要去翻看所有其他作品。’我很感激他们愿意给我的旧作一个机会。”)”可知,Martha对于读者愿意去看她的旧作品很感激,故可推知她是一个谦虚的人;再根据文章最后一段“She regularly champions fellow authors on social media, and it’s clear that she has high hopes for the future of the fantasy genre (体裁).(她经常在社交媒体上推荐同行作家,显然对奇幻文学的未来抱有很高期望。)”

Long-term exposure to polluted air may significantly reduce the positive health effects of regular physical activity, according to new research from an international team that included experts from UCL (University College London).
The study, published in BMC Medicine, examined information from over 1.5 million adults who were monitored for more than ten years across several countries, including the UK, China, Denmark and the United States. The team focused on levels of fine particulate (微粒) matter, or PM2.5s, which are extremely small particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (直径). Because of their size, they can travel deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream.
To conduct the investigation, the research team combined data from seven existing studies. Across all studies, adults who completed at least two and a half hours of moderate exercise each week had a 30% lower risk of death during the study period compared with people who did not reach this level of activity. For highly active people living in areas where PM2.5 pollution was over 25 μg/m3, this protective effect dropped to just 12-15%. When pollution levels rose above 35 μg/m3, the benefit of exercise weakened even more, particularly for deaths linked to cancer. About 36% of the global population lives in places where yearly PM2.5 averages are over 35μg/m3.
Professor Paola Zaninotto from UCL stated: “It is not our intention to dissuade individuals from engaging in outdoor exercise. By checking air quality prior to activity, selecting cleaner routes, or easing off intensity on polluted days, people can maximize the health advantages that exercise has to offer.”
The authors noted several limitations. Most of the data came from high-income countries, so the conclusions may not fully apply to low-income regions where pollution levels are often much higher, sometimes over 50 μg/m3. Additional missing information included indoor air quality and details about participants’ diets. Despite these gaps, the research accounted for many other variables, such as income, education and smoking habits.
8. What can be inferred from the results of the research?
A. Inactive people face 30% death risk.
B. Exercise can reduce deaths linked to cancer.
C. Many global people don’t get full exercise advantages.
D. Places with PM2.5 over 35μg/m3 are not suitable for living.
9. What may Paola Zaninotto suggest doing?
A. Reducing the intensity of exercise.
B. Stopping taking exercise outdoors.
C. Checking air quality while exercising.
D. Taking a walk on a path outside cities.
10. Which of the following limits the study’s conclusions?
A. Insufficient data.
B. Few participants.
C. Lack of indoor exercise records.
D. No analysis of participants’ income.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. Death Rate and Air Pollution
B. Risks of Long-term Air Pollution
C. Tips for Outdoor Exercise Safety
D. Air Quality and Exercise Outcomes
C 9. D 10. A 11. D

根据文章第三段“For highly active people living in areas where PM2.5 pollution was over 25 μg/m3, this protective effect dropped to just 12-15%. When pollution levels rose above 35 μg/m3, the benefit of exercise weakened even more, particularly for deaths linked to cancer. About 36% of the global population lives in places where yearly PM2.5 averages are over 35μg/m3.(对于生活在PM2.5污染浓度超过25微克/立方米地区的高运动量人群,这种保护效果降至仅12%–15%。
根据文章第四段“Professor Paola Zaninotto from UCL stated: “It is not our intention to dissuade individuals from engaging in outdoor exercise. By checking air quality prior to activity, selecting cleaner routes, or easing off intensity on polluted days, people can maximize the health advantages that exercise has to offer.”(伦敦大学学院的Paola Zaninotto教授表示:“我们并非意图劝阻人们进行户外锻炼。通过活动前查看空气质量、选择更清洁的路线,或在污染日降低运动强度,人们仍可最大程度地获得运动带来的健康益处。”)”可知,建议选择更清洁的路线进行户外锻炼,故在城外的小路上散步符合他的建议。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“The authors noted several limitations. Most of the data came from high-income countries, so the conclusions may not fully apply to low-income regions where pollution levels are often much higher, sometimes over 50 μg/m3. Additional missing information included indoor air quality and details about participants’ diets.(作者指出了几项研究局限性:大部分数据来自高收入国家,因此结论可能不完全适用于污染水平通常更高(有时超过50微克/立方米)的低收入地区。此外,研究还缺少室内空气质量及参与者饮食细节等信息。)”可知,该研究的数据主要来自高收入国家,可能不适用于污染更严重的低收入地区;此外还缺少室内空气质量等详细信息。故其局限性在于数据不充分。故选A。
根据文章第一段“Long-term exposure to polluted air may significantly reduce the positive health effects of regular physical activity, according to new research from an international team that included experts from UCL (University College London).(长期暴露于受污染的空气可能会显著降低定期体育活动对健康的积极效果——一个包括伦敦大学学院专家在内的国际研究团队的新研究得出了这一结论。)”

为me;“它让我懂得,真正的力量源于民族的坚韧与团结”用非谓语动词短语作伴随状语,teach与主语this unforgettable experience为主动关系,故用现在分词teaching,me作teaching的宾语,that引导宾语从句作teaching的另一个宾语,从句中“真正的力量”为true strength作主语,“源于”译为stems from,主语为单数,谓语动词用第三人称单数形式stems,“民族的坚韧与团结”为the resilience and unity of a nation作介词from的宾语,所以“它让我懂得,真正的力量源于民族的坚韧与团结”可翻译为teaching me that true strength stems from the resilience and unity of a nation。 This unforgettable experience left an indelible impression on me, teaching me that true strength stems from the resilience and unity of a nation.

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect as my brother and I set off after sunrise with backpacks over our shoulders, stuffed with hiking essentials — water bottles, a first-aid kit, a lighter and lightweight sleeping bags. The air was cool. We’d climb down into a redrock canyon (峡谷), where we would swim in clear pools and camp by a picturesque waterfall. Although I knew it wouldn’t be an easy hike, I was confident enough and persuaded my brother to go together.
About a mile in, the path started to wind down to the river and the footing became rocky and hard. After repeated falls on the loose ground, my brother turned to me and said, “Ryan, we’d better go back. It’s really dangerous.” “But I don’t want to give up. It was only a few more miles to the waterfall.” I insisted. Seeing my determination, he told me to be careful again and again and then turned back to the car hesitantly. We made a plan to meet up at the car the next day.
After another mile or so, the river came into view below me, but the path became less obvious. I detected a few possible routes to the canyon bottom, and then opted to go down a brush-covered slope (斜坡). As soon as I began hiking down, though, I realized the ground was much looser than I’d thought. Then suddenly the rock I was standing on broke beneath me.
I was rolling down, dirt and red sandstone flying beneath me as I picked up speed. I am going to die, I thought. To my surprise, I was alive, but everything hurt. My back was bleeding and felt as though someone had taken a knife to it. Luckily, my backpack was with me.
I tried hard to pull out my phone, but it was broken. My brother wasn’t expecting me for another 29 hours. The path itself wasn’t popular and I couldn’t even move. All I could do was only wait. I kept encouraging myself to cheer up.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

In the helicopter, my brother looked at me tearfully.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When night fell, the temperature dropped by almost 40°F. Shivering with cold, I struggled to take out the lightweight sleeping bag from my backpack and wrapped myself tightly. The howling wind and the total darkness around me made my heart pound with fear. Thoughts of wild animals lurking nearby filled my mind, but I tried to stay calm, telling myself that I must survive. I kept looking up at the sky, praying for the dawn to come soon.
In the helicopter, my brother looked at me tearfully. He held my hand tightly, saying how worried he had been. He told me that when he reached the car and didn't see me as scheduled, he immediately called for help. A rescue team was sent out, and they found me with the help of a tracking device in my backpack. I was deeply moved by his love and the efforts of the rescue team. From then on, I learned that being over - confident without considering safety was not bravery but stupidity.

Long-term exposure to polluted air may significantly reduce the positive health effects of regular physical activity according to new research from an international team that included experts from UCL (University College London).
10 Which of the following limits the study’s conclusions?
A. Insufficient data.
B. Few participants.
C. Lack of indoor exercise records.
D. No analysis of participants’ income.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. Death Rate and Air Pollution
B. Risks of Long-term Air Pollution
C. Tips for Outdoor Exercise Safety
D. Air Quality and Exercise Outcomes
