Wu Mingzhu is called the “queen of melons” a melon-growing specialist and excellent scientist. Among Wu Mingzhu’s classmates was Yuan Longping, who later became the “father of hybrid rice”.
Wu Mingzhu was born in 1930 into a family of teachers in Wuhan city. After she finished university in 1953, she was sent to work in Beijing. But Wu had already set her mind on her long-held goal. “What I studied was the science of fruit and vegetables. I wanted to work in the fields, not in an office,” said Wu.
In 1955, Wu chose to go to work in Turpan, Xinjiang, where working conditions were quite hard. She found that the Hami melon, a special fruit which was once common there, was in danger if not well cultivated. Wu spent years visiting over 300 farming teams, picking out 44 types of melons. She overcame many difficulties to grow very delicious melons in a scientific way, gaining the trust of the local farmers who used traditional methods. Then the growing area covered most of Xinjiang’s main farming areas, and many villages became rich from growing melons.
For more than 60 years, Wu Mingzhu and her team have developed more than 30 melon types, brought the sweetness of melons to people, and shared melon kinds with Chinese features and a full research system with the world. When first hearing her nickname “a pearl in Turpan”, Wu said, “In Xinjiang, there are thousands of science workers like me. They have worked hard for years in the field of agriculture. I’m just one of the ordinary ones.”

With the attractive Labubu dolls seen on bags around the world, Chinese entrepreneur (企业家) Wang Ning has found a method to keep shopping during a time of global economic uncertainty.
This is often called the “market for joy,” a special area of low-cost pleasures like the now very common Labubu. This has helped Pop Mart, the company Wang founded and leads, report record-breaking results in its latest financial report. Revenue (收益) for the first half of 2025 increased three times compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 13.88 billion yuan ($1.93 billion), exceeding the company’s total sales for all of 2023.
Pop Mart’s Hong Kong listed shares (上市股票) have also grown three times in value this year, largely due to Labubu’s rapid popularity in the US. Young people wait in line for hours outside Pop Mart stores to buy the latest Labubu soft toys and other models. Sales outside China accounted for 40% of the company’s total revenue in the first half.
Pop Mart and three other Hong Kong-listed companies — jewelry brand Laopu Gold, Mao Geping Cosmetics, and the very cheap fast-food chain Mixue — have been called the dream team of “modern retail (零售商).” They are successfully meeting the desire of young Chinese for satisfying purchases.
In a 2023 speech, Wang said Pop Mart’s designer toys meet two key consumer needs: satisfaction and identity (身份). Julien Jing, a 32-year-old analyst in Hong Kong, visits Pop Mart every time he goes to a mall. “You think, ‘It only costs as much as a meal’, and then you buy it,” Jing said.
However, investors and analysts have warned that Labubu could be a short-lived trend. They point out that Pop Mart’s future success depends on whether it can continue to create designs that attract similar levels of attention.
8. What caused Pop Mart’s listed shares to increase so much this year?
A. The overall growth of the global toy market.
B. The reduction in production costs for its designer toys.
C. The rapid popularity of its product Labubu in the United States.
D. The successful sales of its other products like Mao Geping Cosmetics.
9. What can be inferred from Julien Jing’s words, “It only costs as much as a meal”?
A. He buys these toys as frequently as he buys meals.
B. The toys are more expensive compared to the cost of food.
C. He believes the quality of the toys is not as good as that of a meal.
D. The low price is a main reason that encourages consumers to buy Labubu.
10. The phrase “short-lived trend” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.
A. Something popular for a short time
B. Something lasts for quite a long time
C. Something liked by a lot of people
D. Something worth a large amount of money
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Wang Ning: The Man Behind the Labubu Doll
B. Pop Mart’s Stock Price and Global Market Strategy
C. The “Market for Joy”: How Pop Mart Sells Happiness and Success
D. Investor Warnings: The Risks of Fleeting Trends in the Toy Industry

Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a job as a lawyer, a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to become a singer. But today, things are very different.
According to a survey by a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged 16 to 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger”. The survey, done among 1,002 people, found that as many as 40 percent of them chose vloggers as their top choice from a list of jobs they would like to have.
This change is certainly because of the Internet and social media. They have made it much easier to have people around the world watch you, without having to start a career in entertainment the old way. In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood film companies; now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are everyday people talking with their fans about daily life.
However, what people see is only the good side of being a vlogger and they do not notice that only those who are successful get famous and rich. For every success there are hundreds of others who never even begin. There are dreams that come true and dreams that stay dreams forever.
Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose jobs that may not make them famous, but that let them make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It’s an online place for runners to write down their mere results. His job allows him to show his strong interest, and is always a chance to learn. And that’s enough for him.
12. Why do more and more young Britons choose to be vloggers?
A. Anyone with a computer will surely become a star.
B. There is too much competition in the traditional show business.
C. The Internet makes it convenient for them to enter show business.
D. Vloggers can earn greater fame and more money on the Internet.
13. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A. Only a few vloggers can be successful.
B. A vlogger cannot earn fame or fortune.
C. Being a vlogger is not a good career.
D. Dreams will surely come true one day.
14. What do some young people like David do on the Internet?
A. Mix jobs with hobbies.
B. Learn from others.
C. Become an online hit.
D Hold running races.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Young Britons cannot find jobs without the Internet.
B. The Internet is influencing young Britons’ career choice.
C. Most Britons choose to be vloggers based on their hobbies.
D. The Internet is taking the place of traditional studios in UK.

Last Saturday, Jordon was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about seven years old. When Jordon passed them, he heard the woman yell, “How stupid you are! You are good at nothing.” Jordon stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
Jordon was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Mary in middle school. He was often told that he was good at nothing. But one day it all changed. One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Mary asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading the book. A few days later, Jordon handed in his story. But the next day to his surprise, the comment (评价) “well done” from Mrs Mary came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When Jordon read that, he almost burst into tears. That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Mary the next morning. And again he was praised.
Jordon became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Mary to read them and correct them for him. Mrs Mary always corrected them for him and gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, he was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published and became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Mary’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
注意:续写词数应80—100词左右;续写内容为一段;
Encouraged by his own life story, Jordon decided to do something for that boy.

D. Hold running races.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Young Britons cannot find jobs without the Internet.
B. The Internet is influencing young Britons’ career choice.
C. Most Britons choose to be vloggers based on their hobbies.
D. The Internet is taking the place of traditional studios in UK.
C 13. A 14. A 15. B

They have made it much easier to have people around the world watch you, without having to start a career in entertainment the old way.
根据第四段“However, what people see is only the good side of being a vlogger and they do not notice that only those who are successful get famous and rich. For every success there are hundreds of others who never even begin. There are dreams that come true and dreams that stay dreams forever. (然而,人们所看到的只是成为视频博主的积极一面,他们并未注意到只有那些成功者才能获得名声和财富。每一种成功背后都有成百上千的人从未开始过。有梦想得以实现,也有梦想永远只是梦想)”可知,该段强调视频博主行业竞争激烈,成功者寥寥,多数人难以实现梦想。由此可知,只有少数视频博主能成功。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose jobs that may not make them famous, but that let them make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. (尽管成为视频博主很流行,但一些年轻人还是选择从事一些可能不会让他们出名,但能让他们充分利用互联网来分享自己爱好的工作。例如,以色列的年轻人David Leshaw就经营着一家名为“完成者俱乐部”的公司)”可知,像David这样的年轻人利用互联网将工作与爱好相结合。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a job as a lawyer, a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to become a singer. But today, things are very different. (25年前,大多数英国年轻人都希望从事律师、医生之类的职业,或者如果他们足够有才华的话,就想成为一名歌手。但如今,情况大不相同了)”和第三段中“This change is certainly because of the Internet and social media. (这种变化无疑是因为互联网和社交媒体)”可知,全文围绕互联网如何改变英国年轻人的职业理想展开,过去他们向往律师、医生等传统职业,现在视频博主成为“梦想职业”,互联网降低了成名门槛,但也伴随激烈竞争,部分年轻人则利用互联网结合兴趣发展事业。因此,本文主要讲述互联网正在影响英国年轻人的职业选择。故选B项。

Using Social Media with Kindness and Balance
To All Students,
Nowadays, many of us feel anxious or stressed due to chasing likes, comments, or facing unkind online remarks. This not only harms our mental health but also weakens real-life friendships.
Let’s take action: First, limit daily social media use and focus more on face-to-face interactions. Second, always post and comment with kindness — think before you type!
Together, let’s create a supportive, respectful online community while cherishing genuine connections offline.

One possible version:
Encouraged by his own life story, Jordon decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. He told her that what she had said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs Mary. The mother was ashamed. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid. She said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at them, Jordon felt relieved, hoping he could make some difference to the boy.
