When you have trouble sleeping, you might try different things to help. One unique but effective option that’s gaining popularity is using weighted blankets (毯子). This can help you relax. It’s a simple way to reduce anxiety and sleep better, and many people are finding it.
About 32% of Americans don’t get the recommended amount of sleep, which is at least 7 hours a night, according to experts. Sleep troubles affect as many as 35% of adults occasionally, with 10% facing chronic (长期的) challenges in falling and staying asleep.
Weighted blankets function similarly to swaddling (包裹) a baby, providing a comforting feeling. Using a weighted blanket helps your heart, your breath and your body give off feel-good hormones (激素). This, in turn, reduces anxiety and contributes to a more peaceful sleep. The weight of these blankets ranges from 5 to 30 pounds, which sounds like a lot but is spread out over the entire bed, making it manageable and comfortable.
In 2020, eight studies found that weighted blankets had a calming effect on individuals. That same year, a study in Sweden surveyed 120 people who were struggling with sleeplessness and sadness. Those who used weighted blankets reported better sleep quality and less daytime tiredness, anxiety and sadness.
Sleep experts suggest using these blankets to achieve better sleep. Alanna McGinn, a lead sleep expert, highlights their effectiveness in addressing sleep-related issues. However, those with specific medical conditions, particularly blood disorders, should seek guidance from a healthcare provider before using a weighted blanket. “And if you’re someone who gets a little claustrophobic (患幽闭恐怖症的), it’s probably not the best thing for you,” adds Alanna McGinn. These blankets may not be suitable for you as the added weight can increase discomfort.
In a word, try a weighted blanket — science says its gentle hug can unlock deeper sleep and brighter days.
24. What is the benefit of using a weighted blanket according to the text?
A. It helps you lose weight. B. It makes your bed warmer.
C. It helps people with blood disorders. D. It reduces anxiety and improves sleep.
25. How heavy can weighted blankets be?
A 1 to 5 pounds. B. 5 to 30 pounds.
C. 30 to 50 pounds. D. Over 30 pounds.
26. What did the study in Sweden show about people using weighted blankets?
A. They felt more awake at night. B. They had more dreams.
C. They reported better sleep. D. They stopped using other sleep aids.
27. Who should be careful or avoid using weighted blankets?
A. People who sleep alone. B. People who sleep too much.
C. People who like light blankets. D. People with certain medical conditions.

Last week, the Los Angeles Unified School District became the largest in US to pass a districtwide cellphone ban (禁止). For teachers, this is great news. For many kids, it’s less welcome. Parents, meanwhile, are conflicted, caught between wanting their children to learn with concentration and worried about losing the easy communication to which they’ve grown used.
Smartphones undoubtedly hold back students’ attention to exploring the unknown or close reading a Shakespearean poem. A 2023 study by Common Sense Media showed that teens check their phones more than 100 times a day on average. On top of the hundreds of messages lighting up screens and breaking in class lectures, teens now spend 4.8 hours on social media each day. The study also makes it obviously clear that students have difficulty in controlling their smartphone use, which seriously influences their focus and mental (心理上的) health.
Yet many parents remain careful of banning phones during the school day. They are afraid that doing so would cut communication between them and their children-not only when they want to organize pickups or drop-offs but also in case of a sudden serious situation.
Schools have managed to operate well without smartphones for centuries. For worried parents, providing their children with non-smartphones might be the best choice; schools might consider whether selective (选择性的) phone bans that allow such devices could work. Or parents could get even more old-fashioned and simply call their school’s office when necessary.
The next question for schools is how to ban cellphones. A popular choice is requiring the use of magnetic bags that lock in the morning and unlock when the final bell rings, or in case of dangerous situations.
When smartphone bans are done right, they can be helpful to both schools and students. At Bethlehem Central High School near Albany, N. Y., for example, students’ grades have improved since applying a ban last fall. Students are more focused on studies. Parents have even said they’re surprised at the success of the newly phone-free school.
28. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “conflicted” in paragraph 1?
A. Supported by both. B. Concerned about the future.
C. Not knowing what to do. D. Not good at everything.
29. What does the author mainly want to express in paragraph 2?
A. Parents should help their teens control screen time.
B. Heavy usage of smartphones badly influences students.
C. Texting is a main method of communication for teens.
D. It’s important for students to learn Shakespeare’s poems.
30. What can schools do for worried parents according to paragraph 4?
A. Allow students to carry non-smartphones. B. Provide old-fashioned phones for them.
C. Encourage them to visit the school’s office. D. Set up public phone stations at school for teens.
31. Why is Bethlehem Central High School mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To present the school’s teaching achievements. B. To stress the key to improving students’ studies.
C. To explain why parents accept smartphone bans. D. To show smartphone bans can make a difference.

Will Gladstone was in his fifth-grade science class in Newton, Massachusetts, when he first heard of the blue-footed booby (蓝鸟). They are commonly found on the rocky Galapagos Islands, which lie about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. The population has become smaller in recent years, he learned. He decided to raise money to help the birds.
After seeing the boobies’ special feet, Will thought of a creative idea: selling blue socks. In 2016, he and his younger brother Matty started the Blue feet Foundation (基金会). They sent their favorite design to a sock company in China to customize (定制) the product. After the socks arrived, Will set up a website. When the first orders started coming in, they mailed socks to customers right away. The boys planned to donate all the money they earned to groups that help the blue-footed booby.
In the beginning, it was a challenge for the boys to gather support for their cause. They reached out to several organizations, but none were willing. Although this was discouraging, the two continued. Finally, they came across an organization which helps protect animals in the Galapagos Islands. The people who work there offered to highlight the foundation in their newsletter, which gave the brothers confidence and helped them attract more customers, turning their small idea into something that people all over the world supported.
Though the booby population has fallen by 60% since the 1960s, there’s hope from the rising number of their young birds. Yet challenges remain — sardines (沙丁鱼), once a major part of their diet, have disappeared. The birds make up for the energy by eating other types of fish, but researchers guess the low percentage of sardines in their diet is related to the fact that a smaller number of them are having babies.
In the summer of 2017, Will’s class went on a week-long trip to Ecuador, including a few days on the Galapagos Islands. There, he got his first glimpse of a blue-footed booby in the wild. Although it was from a distance, it was a memorable moment and “an unforgettable feeling.”
32. What made Will decide to raise money for blue-footed booby protection?
A. His interest in charity. B. His teacher’s encouragement.
C. The birds’ present situation. D. A trip to the Galapagos Islands.
33. Which word best describes the brothers?
A. Modest. B. Devoted. C. Independent. D. Knowledgeable.
34. What causes the population of blue-footed boobies to become smaller?
A. The influence of local people. B. The loss of their homes.
C. The attack from their natural enemies. D. The disappearance of a special kind of fish.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. searching for Companies to Make Socks B. Mailing Blue Socks Worldwide
C. Visiting Galapagos for Blue-footed Boobies D. Selling Socks to Save Seabirds

How to Raise a Child Who Loves Reading
Give your kids good books to read.
By “good” I mean quality literature that makes kids think, not just entertains them. Some books can be fun. ____36____ Keep away from lightweight (内容平庸的) books, because they may teach them to turn away from anything that makes their brains work too hard. A diet of lightweight books does not promote the patterns of thought that produce intellectual and personal excellence.
____37____
Kids love listening to their parents read, even as they get older, so don’t stop reading aloud to your children just because they can read on their own. This is a perfect opportunity to challenge their abilities, vocabulary and worldviews by reading books.
Remove distractions (使人分心的事物).
With hand-held devices (设备) at hand, it’s almost impossible to expect children to give them up voluntarily for a book! ____38____ Parents should have these devices powered down and phones put away, and ask them to pull out their books. Once kids finally get into their books, it creates the same quiet, peaceful atmosphere home.
Talk about books with your kids.
____39____ Ask every family member, even the youngest, what they have read that day and what they’ve learned from it. This will arouse discussion and debate about the issues raised in the books.
Give our kids paper books, not e-books.
Studies have shown children keep information better when they read it on paper, as opposed to a screen, so avoid giving your child e-books to read. A paper book allows them to create a relationship with the book, to reread and to become familiar with a book’s feel and smell. ____40____
A Read aloud to your kids.
B. Take chances to challenge your kids.
C That’s where parental responsibility comes in.
D. All these are very real parts of the reading experience.
E. Parents should inform their kids of the harmfulness of hand-held devices.
F. The dinner table is a great place to start reflective conversations about books.
G. But it’s important to teach kids to appreciate books that may take effort to consume.

I'm crazy about running. Sometimes the pain of running can have a magic influence on a runner. Throughout any given race, you are suffering. Your lungs feel like they're being squeezed (挤压) by something unseen. But it is in this pain that a great runner is created.
My first cross-country coach told me that every race is run with patience and determination. I've carried this advice with me for hundreds of miles. I especially remember the 5 miles of running in one race, where his words encouraged me a lot.
That day the weather was perfect. I and dozens of runners gathered at the starting line to do some last-minute preparations for the running. Then, we lined up and got ready to start. There was a brief moment before the gun gave a signal of running. In that moment of great stress, I determined to push myself to run as fast as possible, hoping to make my coach proud, who was waiting for me at the finish line. When the sound of "Bang" came up, we were off.
Running between runners, I managed to work my way up in the first 400 meters and passed many racers on my sides. But out of good sportsmanship, we each said a "good job" or "keep up" to every person we passed. Although we were competitors, running was a connection we all shared.
The first mile passed quickly in a feeling of excitement. It was not challenging in the beginning of the running. But I knew it would be harder and harder in the following miles. I made full use of the running skills that my coach had taught me. I checked that I was doing everything right, breathing in through my nose, keeping my hands relaxed and pumping (快速摆动) my arms. However, the shadow of tiredness danced before me. Anyway I tried to push it out of my mind.
With time going by, the competition became fiercer. Every runner tried their best to run in order to gain a good place in the race. Audience along the track shouted and cheered us.

A. 1 to 5 pounds.
C People who like light blankets. D. People with certain medical conditions.
【答案】24. D 25. B 26. C 27. D

【答案】28. C 29. B 30. A 31. D

第二节 (共 5小题;每小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5分)
A. Read aloud to your kids.
B. Take chances to challenge your kids.
C. That’s where parental responsibility comes in.
D. All these are very real parts of the reading experience.
E. Parents should inform their kids of the harmfulness of hand-held devices.
F. The dinner table is a great place to start reflective conversations about books.

【答案】Possible version:
Eventually I reached the final mile. It was then that I felt extremely tired and sweat fell down my face. Many runners in the race had fallen behind, but I refused to be one of them. Instead, I chose to pump my legs a little faster and push myself a little harder. As the last half mile was near, the number of people along the track increased. Around the next corner, I could see my coach waving to me in great excitement. I tried to run faster.
Unfortunately, I suddenly fell down. I felt great pain and discouraged. Just at that moment, the audience shouted, "Come on, girl!” "Watch out!” "Keep up!” Meanwhile, a runner behind me came to me and gave me a lift. I was really grateful and encouraged. I stood up and ran for the final 400 meters. When I finally sailed over the finish line, I nearly cried with relief. I won the third place in the race. My coach was proud of me and I felt great too.
