B
On her third Christmas, my daughter Jillian didn't have the energy for opening presents. At 23-months, she had been diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive tumor. I didn’t know how challenging the holidays could become until Jillian died. Being sorrowful became my full-time job in the following days. The pain was a wildfire in my chest and nothing could put it out.
A week before the fourth Christmas, Tom and I bought a three-foot plant that slightly resembled a Christmas tree. My adult nephew Frankie came along. We were busy decorating the tree and Frankie reached into a Christmas decoration box and pulled out a toy angel with a white gown that my aunt had crafted years before. As he lifted the angel, her hair fell out in one big bunch, just like Jillian's.
We burst into laughter. In between gasps, Frankie looked up with the angel in hand and said, “Hi, Jillian.” Tom emerged from the bedroom and saw our tree, “It’s small, bald and beautiful! Just like Jilly-boo. I like it.”
I moved closer to Tom and he put his arm around my shoulder. Looking at the angel, I knew it would help us through the holidays. Like us, it was sad and pitiful, but full of beautiful memories of Jillian.
“Do something new.” said a minister who ran a support group I went to. It’s as if you must create a new space in your heart to keep it beating, despite the bleeding hole.
Tom and I were eventually able to experience the wonder of a four-year-old at Christmas. On the one-year anniversary of Jillian’s death, I discovered I was pregnant. Our second daughter, Cadence, brought us back to joy and hope. Cadence is nine now, and hoping Santa will bring her a dog this year. Eleven years after Jillian’s death, Christmas is almost Christmas again.
4 What does the author say about herself after Jillian’s death?
A. She went on her life as usual. B. She was drowned in tears.
C. She decided to start a new life. D. She quit her full-time job.
5. What can we infer about the toy angel?
A. It was a beautiful decoration. B. It was a gift from Jillian.
C. It was a relief to the author. D. It was a symbol of strength.
6. What does the author mean by “Christmas is almost Christmas again”?
A. Her family can reunite again. B. She has been out of sadness.
C. Santa will bring them gifts. D. She has another daughter.
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Mother’s love is forever strong. B. One should depend on himself.
C. Family is everything for people. D. Life goes on despite misfortunes.
C
It’s mid-afternoon. You’re full from lunch. The day is warm. You’re starting to feel sleepy. Should you give in to the comfort of a nap (小睡)?
From the viewpoint of health, it may be worth it. Though there is a hassle among people when it comes to whether napping benefits everyone, we generally acknowledge that naps can improve at least some people’s cognitive (认知的) performance in the short term.
For example, scientists reviewed a past experiment that focused on healthy participants with regular sleep cycles. In that experiment, participants were given math problems that could be solved with a shortcut that they weren’t told about. Some participants were encouraged to take a nap before dealing with the problems. It was found that those who napped — and spent even just 30 seconds in the first, lightest stage of sleep — were 2.7 times more likely to figure out the math shortcut than those who stayed awake. But entering a deeper sleep stage had a negative effect.
The benefits of napping are strongest for people who have sleep debt, such as shift workers, new parents and elderly people whose nighttime sleep is always interrupted. They all seem to get a boost through napping: a 2013 study focusing on such people, for example, showed that taking a nap during one’s night shift reduced sleepiness and improved overall performance, even if people were slightly inactive as they came out of their nap — a phenomenon called “sleep inertia (惰性)”.
There is something we can do to reduce sleep inertia. A 20-minute nap is good for recharging, and 60 to 90 minutes of sleep can be even more beneficial. The key is to avoid napping more than 20 minutes and less than 60 minutes, which is most likely to lead to sleep inertia.
8. What does the underlined word “hassle” mean in paragraph 2?
A. concern. B. debate. C. guidance. D. judgement.
9. What did the experiment in paragraph 3 find about napping?
A. It improves memory. B. It may promote one’s health.
C. It can help clear one’s mind. D. It has a bad influence on people.
10. What can we infer about the subjects of the 2013 study?
A. They didn’t get enough nighttime sleep. B. They were inactive in daytime.
C. They came out of their naps slowly. D. They tended to nap more.
11. How can we avoid sleep inertia?
A. By taking fewer naps. B. By napping within one hour.
C. By avoiding long naps. D. By managing the nap length.
D
Here is a very surprising and significant fact: Mental work alone can’t make us tired. It sounds absurd (荒唐). But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor (工作) without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins (毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists say that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional (情绪) attitudes. One of England’s most outstanding scientists, J.A. Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin (起源). In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He says, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated — those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
12. What surprised the scientists a few years ago?
A. The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.
B. Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn after a day’s work.
C. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a worker’s blood.
D. A mental worker’s blood was filled with fatigue toxins.
13. What did scientists discover about the human brain’s fatigue?
A. The brain produces a lot of fatigue toxins during activity.
B. Fatigue toxins in the brain make people feel tired quickly.
C. The brain shows no fatigue toxins even after long hours of work.
D. Blood from a day laborer has fewer fatigue toxins than that from a scientist.
14. What makes sitting workers tired, according to Dr. Brill?
A. Fatigue toxins in their blood.
B. Emotional problems like boredom and anxiety.
C. Physical problems from sitting for long hours.
D. Too much mental work every day.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the scientists’ idea?
A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Opposing. D. Supportive.

4. What does the author say about herself after Jillian’s death?
B 5. C 6. B 7. D

B 9. C 10. A 11. D
根据“Though”和下文“we generally acknowledge that naps can improve at least some people’s cognitive (认知的) performance in the short term.(我们普遍认为,午睡至少能在短期内改善某些人的认知表现。)”
根据第三段“Some participants were encouraged to take a nap before dealing with the problems. It was found that those who napped — and spent even just 30 seconds in the first, lightest stage of sleep — were 2.7 times more likely to figure out the math shortcut than those who stayed awake.(一些参与者被鼓励在解决问题前小睡一会儿。研究发现,那些小睡的人——即使只在第一阶段、最浅的睡眠阶段花了30秒——比那些保持清醒的人找出数学捷径的可能性要高出2.7倍。)”可知,小睡可以帮助人们理清思路,找到解决问题的捷径。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“The benefits of napping are strongest for people who have sleep debt, such as shift workers, new parents and elderly people whose nighttime sleep is always interrupted(小睡对睡眠时间不足的人,如轮班工人、新父母和夜间睡眠总是被打断的老年人,好处最大)”和“a 2013 study focusing on such people, for example, showed that taking a nap during one’s night shift reduced sleepiness and improved overall performance(例如,2013年一项针对这类人群的研究表明,在夜班期间小睡可以减少困倦,提高整体表现。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“A 20-minute nap is good for recharging, and 60 to 90 minutes of sleep can be even more beneficial. The key is to avoid napping more than 20 minutes and less than 60 minutes, which is most likely to lead to sleep inertia.(20分钟的小睡有助于恢复精力,而60到90分钟的睡眠可能更有益。关键是要避免小睡时间在20分钟以上、60分钟以下,因为这最容易导致睡眠惯性。)”可知,为了避免睡眠惯性,我们需要控制小睡的时间,避免过长或过短的睡眠。故选D。

14. What makes sitting workers tired according to Dr. Brill?
C. Opposing. D. Supportive.
A 13. C 14. B 15. D
根据第一段中的“But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor (工作) without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all!(但几年前,科学家们试图探究人类大脑在持续工作状态下能够保持活跃多久而不出现疲劳现象。令这些科学家们惊讶的是,他们发现当大脑处于活跃状态时,流经大脑的血液丝毫没有疲劳的迹象!)”可知,几年前,科学家们惊讶地发现人的大脑是不知疲倦的。故选A。
根据第二段“So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless.(就大脑而言,经过八小时甚至十二小时的高强度工作后,它仍能像刚开始时一样正常运转且反应迅速。大脑是完全不会疲劳的。)”可知,科学家们发现即使长时间工作,大脑也不会产生疲劳毒素。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated — those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.(一种感到无聊、愤怒、焦虑、紧张、担忧、觉得自己未被赏识的情绪——这些都是让久坐工作者感到疲惫的情绪。单靠辛苦工作本身很少会导致疲劳。我们之所以感到疲惫,是因为我们的这些情绪会在身体中引发紧张反应。)”可知,导致办公室职员感到疲倦的原因是诸如无聊和焦虑之类的情绪问题。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Some scientists say that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional (情绪) attitudes.(一些科学家认为,我们大部分的疲劳源自我们的心理和情绪状态。)”及最后一段的最后一句“We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body. (我们之所以感到疲惫,是因为我们的这些情绪会在身体中引发紧张反应。)”可知,我们感觉到累是因为我们身体里产生了紧张的情绪,呼应了科学家们的观点,因此作者是赞同这个观点的。故选D。
