For the sixth year in a row, a Florida Chick-fil-A(CFA) celebrated the birthday of a longtime customer who has been coming to the restaurant on a regular basis for over 20 years! The CFA location in Oldsmar, Fla., threw a 104th birthday party for beloved customer Mr Steve on Nov. 8.
In a post online, the restaurant said Mr Steve visited every morning for over two decades until 2018. He sat in the same booth, ordered the same breakfast and read the morning paper during his daily visits. Now, he visits on a regular basis.
“His visit was a daily highlight and our team would carve out a good five to tenminutes each day to sit and talk with him,” the post said. He is described as one of the “sweetest, most genuine, kind, and humble people we have had the pleasure to know” by the restaurant employees, many of whom have built a special relationship with him over the years.
The restaurant shared pictures from each birthday celebration. When he turned 100, the location said it went “big” by dedicating a booth to Mr Steve and gifting him free CFA for life. The celebration resulted in national news attention and the opportunity for Mr Steve to film a Chick-fil-A commercial in New York City.
In 2020 for Mr Steve’s 102nd birthday, CFA team members showed up to his home and celebrated him with a socially distanced party in the driveway. In 2021, the restaurant opened its dining room just for Mr Steve in order to celebrate his 103rd birthday.
“As we celebrated 104, we couldn’t help but feel immensely grateful for the opportunity to return even a portion of the love that he shares with our team, and for the bond that we have been able to build over the past six years of birthdays,” the restaurant wrote online.

Storytelling is universal and is as ancient as humankind. Before there was writing, there was storytelling. It exists (and existed) to entertain, to inform, and to promote cultural traditions and values. Oral storytelling is telling a story through voice and gestures. The oral tradition can take many forms, including epic poems, chants, rhymes, songs, and more. Not all of these stories are historically accurate or even true. It can contain myths, legends, fables, prayers, proverbs, and instructions.
Like all native American tribes, the Choctaw have an oral storytelling tradition going back generations. Their stories were intended to preserve the tribe’s history and educate the young. For example, the Choctaw oral tradition includes two creation stories: One relates to migration from the west and another to creation from a mound. In addition, the oral tradition includes history as well as life lessons or moral teachings. Most of the Choctaw traditional tales employ animal characters to teach such lessons in a humorous manner.
The seanchai were the traditional Irish keepers of story. They would travel from village to village, reciting ancient lore and tales of wisdom. They told the old myths as well as local news and happenings. Tales of kings and heroes are the highlights in the Irish oral tradition.
The peoples of sub-Saharan Africa have strong storytelling traditions. In many parts of Africa, after dinner, the villagers gather around a central fire to listen to the storyteller. The griots have long been a vital part of Western African culture: they are storytellers, troubadours, and advisors to kings. They perform the functions of storytellers, genealogists, historians, ambassadors, and more. The griots are traditionally hereditary (世袭的), a profession passed from one generation to the next. There are also griot schools where more formal training can be offered. Both men and women can take up the profession.
Today, storytelling and interest in storytelling appear to be making a comeback. As one Irish storyteller puts it, “It’s a need for connection... I think storytelling nurtures connections with people in real life.”

A. Recording man’s migration journey.
B. Telling of local news and happenings.
C. Praising the brave deeds of kings and heroes.
D. Using animal characters to educate the young.
10. What can we infer from the storytelling traditions in sub-Saharan Africa?
A. Storytellers are popular and receive high pay.
B. Storytellers are learned with high social positions.
C. Storytellers teach the young generations moral lessons.
D. Storytellers play an important role in economic development.
11. What can be the best title for the text?

On a cold evening in 2016, Great Basin slipped out of the shadows and approached what looked like a metal cabinet lying on its side. The raccoon could smell cat food within. but 12 latched (闩住) narrow doors blocked his entry.
So Great Basin jumped on the top and began to fiddle (不停摆弄) with the latches upside down. He quickly opened one of the doors and filled his belly.
Raccoons — renowned for their ability to jimmy their way into locked garbage cans — have long been known for their cleverness. But researchers have little sense of how clever they really are. A study published recently may change that.
From 2016 to 2017, Lauren Stanton, an ecologist who was drawn by raccoons’ quick ability to adapt to environments, and her colleagues placed six puzzle boxes in a residential backyard. Puzzle boxes are standard in cognition and behavior studies, where an animal claws, grabs, or fiddles with a single latched door hiding some food. But the scientists designed a new type of box with 24 food-filled compartments (分隔层) rather than the typical single compartment, giving them more data points to see how raccoons might solve new problems.
Cameras revealed some surprises. In one instance, a raccoon pushes a skunk (臭鼬) out of the way to fiddle with a difficult latch, then easily opens it. In another, some raccoons wait near the puzzle box until another raccoon solves it, pushing it aside and getting the reward without any work. In all, about 25% of the raccoons were able to open at least three doors, although that was not as good as the 65% observed in the lab.
In 2017, Stanton’s team increased the difficulty level, introducing a new puzzle with four different types of locks. Again, 25% of the raccoons were successful, demonstrating flexibility in problem-solving.
The findings could help explain how raccoons thrive in urban settings, solving the many “puzzles” of an urban environment, says Blake Morton, an animal behavıorist. “This is wonderful when studies come out like this, because it shows that we can do these studies in the wild, and we should be doing them.”
12. Why did Great Basin make great efforts to fiddle with the latches?
A. To have fun. B. To access the food inside.
C. To escape from danger. D. To attract other raccoons.
13. What did Lauren Stanton’s research focus on about raccoons?
A. Their interaction patterns. B. Their problem-solving abilities.
C. Their food preferences. D. Their adaptability in the wild.
14 How did Lauren Stanton and her-colleagues test raccoons’ ability to adapt?
A. By comparing lab and field findings. B. By observing behaviors via cameras.
C. By employing standard puzzle boxes. D. By presenting increasingly challenging tasks.
15. What does Blake Morton think of Stanton’s studies?
A. They hold scientific value and should continue.
B. They need to involve more animal species in the wild.
C. They inspire new ways to deal with raccoons in cities.
D. They offer new insights into human-wildlife coexistence.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Finding a bird scared after striking a window can be a surprising and heartbreaking experience. ____16____
Observe the bird
The advice is that any bird that has collided with a window should be seen by a rehabber (康复师). Most window-collision birds will have some degree of eye injury.____17____ Even if they can fly away and do not look injured, some 70% of birds that have collided with glass will not recover themselves if they are not treated.
Get a bird to a rehabber
Approach the bird slowly from behind and gently capture it in your hands, with a bag prepared nearby. Some birds will be so surprised that they won’t even notice; others will shock and scream and may try to escape. However, this is a fear response.____18____
For smaller birds, the best “ambulance” is a paper bag, like a lunch bag or a small paper shopping bag. Birds may still flap around inside, and the paper is soft enough that they won’t further injure themselves like they might if they are in a hard cardboard box or animal carrier. You can poke a few holes in the bag, though it is not necessary if the bird is not going to be inside for more than a few hours.____19____ Absolutely do not give the bird water or food.
If you can’t get to a rehabber
If you absolutely cannot take the bird to a wildlife rehabber, keep the bird safe from predators and see if it will try to fly away in a bit. After the shock of the collision, a dark, quiet place can be helpful. So consider putting the bird in a bag or box and letting it restore for a while. After 30 minutes or so, take the bag or box as far away as possible from your home and other structures.____20____ If it doesn’t, close the box back up and open it every 15 minutes until the bird is strong enough to achieve takeoff.
A. Many birds will also have brain injuries.
B. A box may be suitable for larger birds.
C. A big box is the best choice for them.
D. Open the box to allow the bird to fly out.
E. It is an indication that they are hungry.
F. It is not a sign that they are not injured.
G. However, a little love and protection could help.

Henry owns a promising company. For the last few years, his company has worked with the American Heart Association to develop an app that offers training for CPR (心肺复苏) and other lifesaving skills.
Before the launch of the app, Henry had to review the app to ensure that everything looked good and was performing well. As part of his evaluation, Henry went through every screen many times. This included reviewing many questions about first aid, such as the correct positions for giving chest compressions (按压) and rescue breaths. At the time, his only focus was making the app work perfectly.
From testing and using the app, Henry gained a great deal of first aid knowledge, information key to saving people’s lives in emergencies. Little did he know that these skills he had picked up by chance would soon become crucial in an unexpected moment of accident.
His family were at a social gathering one day when little Beckham, Henry’s son, saw a foam noodle (泡沫) floating in a pool. With no one looking, the boy went in after that noodle. He walked down a couple of steps and reached out for it. Instead, his little hand pushed it away. Beckham chased after the noodle again, only this time in water deeper than he could handle.
A teenager, who was the first to notice Beckham floating face down, jumped in, pulled Beckham out and placed him on his back alongside the edge of the pool. His body was lifeless, his face purple. The teenager started screaming.
From about 30 feet away, Henry heard a chilling scream off to his right. He turned towards it. Because of people in the way, all he could see was a pair of tiny legs wearing black swimming shorts and black shoes. Recognizing it was his son, he raced over.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;

Today storytelling and interest in storytelling appear to be making a comeback. As one Irish storyteller puts it, “It’s a need for connection... I think storytelling nurtures connections with people in real life.”

14. How did Lauren Stanton and her-colleagues test raccoons’ ability to adapt?

Most window-collision birds will have some degree of eye injury.____17____ Even if they can fly away and do not look injured some 70% of birds that have collided with glass will not recover themselves if they are not treated.

The ambulance arrived finally.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Nobody knew what to do except Henry. He quickly knelt down beside his son, his heart pounding with fear. Remembering the first aid knowledge he had learned from the app, he immediately checked Beckham’s pulse and breathing. Finding none, he started chest compressions without hesitation. After a series of compressions, he gave rescue breaths. All the while, he prayed silently for his son’s recovery. Minutes passed like hours, but Henry didn’t stop. Suddenly, Beckham coughed up some water and started breathing weakly. Henry was overjoyed but still remained cautious.
The ambulance arrived finally. The paramedics rushed in and took over the treatment. They examined Beckham carefully and praised Henry for his quick and correct actions. Henry accompanied his son in the ambulance to the hospital. At the hospital, after a series of checks and treatments, the doctor said Beckham was out of danger. Henry couldn’t help but shed tears of joy. He realized that the app he had been working on had not only the potential to save countless strangers’ lives but had also saved his own son’s life at this critical moment.
