Xiangqi, or Chinese chess, is a strategy board game for two players. With a history of over 2,000 years, it is the most popular board game in China.
The game shows a fight between two armies. Chuhe hanjie, which refers to the Chu-Han War, divides the board into two sides. The main goal is catching the enemy’s general. It is played on a board with nine vertical lines (纵线) and ten horizontal lines (横线). The pieces are put on the intersections (交叉点).
Each player controls 16 pieces. The pieces are flat, round disks with a Chinese character on them. To distinguish between pieces of the two sides, one player uses red pieces and the other uses black ones. The black characters are a little different from the corresponding (对应的) red ones. The oldest xiangqi piece found is a chariot (ju) piece. It is kept in the Three Gorges Museum, showing how the game has been loved and passed down for centuries.
________ Elders play it in parks to make friends and chat. Families play it to spend happy time together. Parents teach kids, and they talk and laugh happily during the game. Playing xiangqi also helps you learn useful skills: you need to plan ahead, guess what the other player will do, and stay calm when things are hard. My name is Luke. Before I was eight, I had met witches (女巫) twice. I’m just alive here to tell the story because of my wonderful Norwegian grandmother who knows all about witches.
My parents and I lived in England for my father’s work. Just after my seventh birthday, my world broke down. During a visit to Norway, our car lost control on an icy road. My parents were killed, leaving me alone to live with my grandmother.
To help us forget our sadness, she told me stories. But the stories that fascinated and frightened me the most were about witches. She told me these were not fairy tales—they were all true and witches were still here, hidden among us.
One evening before bed through the windows I could see snow falling slowly down. My grandmother was old with a wide body and wore a grey dress that covered her completely. I sat at her feet. “Grandma, can you tell me something about witches?” I asked.
“Witches look like normal-looking women. Let me tell you five strange stories about children who met witches. The first child I knew who disappeared,” she said, “was called Ranghild, and she was led away by a tall lady in white gloves and disappeared forever.” “What happened to the second disappearing kid?” I asked. “There was a family who had an old farmyard oil-painting which they were very proud of. The girl called Solveg came home from school eating an apple from a nice lady. The next morning, little Solveg was not in her bed. Her parents searched everywhere and then suddenly her father shouted, “There she is! He was pointing at the oil-painting with Solveg being part of it in the act of throwing bread to the ducks.” “How amazing it is! What about the other three?”
Although I was very young, I was not prepared to believe everything my grandmother told me. Yet my grandmother spoke with such seriousness that I began to reflect. “Now it’s time for bed, sweetheart. Maybe we can talk about ways to deal with them later.” She said. “A witch won’t come through my window, will she?” I asked, “No,” she said with certainty. “You are safe in your bed.” Yet, lying in the dark, the line between the fairy tale and reality seemed to disappear, leaving me in a state of uneasiness.

①Imagine a person who cannot move or speak because of illness. Now, imagine this person controlling a smart home, or even moving a robotic arm-just by thinking. This is not science fiction. Companies like Neuralink are working to make it real. They are developing a technology called Brain-Computer Interface (接口) (BCI) to create a direct connection between the human brain and computers.
②BCI is a system that allows information to flow directly between the brain and an outer machine, like a computer or a robotic arm. The key idea is to “read” the brain’s electrical signals (信号), decode them using machine learning, and translate them into orders. While it sounds ultra-modern, it has been around for many years in science fiction. Real research began in the late 20th century, focused on helping people with disabilities. Today, with the development of neuroscience (神经科学) and artificial intelligence (AI), BCI technology is developing faster than ever.
③The possible uses of BCI can change many parts of our personal lives.
④For people with serious disabilities, BCI can be a window to the world. It’s possible for them to move again or search online by using their thoughts.
⑤After a tiring day, BCI could create much pleasure and educational experiences in reality, where you control the game or simulation (仿真) with your mind.
⑥BCI also provides much convenience for the public services. For example, firefighters might use it to control robots in dangerous places, keeping themselves safe. In the future, it could even help manage traffic systems by understanding drivers’ stress level.
⑦Although there is exciting progress, making BCI work perfectly is quite challenging. The brain is really complex (复杂的). Reading clear signals often requires small electrodes to be put in which carries risks. Besides, scientists are still learning the “language” of the brain to interpret (解释) meanings correctly every time. And this technology raises big ethical (伦理的) questions about privacy, fairness, and what it means to be humans. After all, the journey of BCI has just begun. Stay hungry for knowledge, and don’t be afraid to imagine the impossible.
32. How does the writer begin the passage?
A. By imagining a scene (场景). B. By telling a story.
C. By asking questions. D. By listing reasons.
33. What can we learn from the passage?
A. BCI helps the information to flow between the brain and body.
B. Real early research on BCI was mainly used for educational purposes.
C. Neuroscience and AI have developed rapidly thanks to BCI technology.
D. BCI can be used to improve medical service and education in daily life.
34. According to Paragraph 7, what are the challenges that BCI faces?
①The complexity of the brain. ②The ability of language learning.
③The ethical questions. ④The ability of decoding the brain.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
35. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.

In recent years, an increasing number of people have found joy in watching and listening to birds in their local parks, gardens, or even from their windows. This simple activity, known as bird-watching, has grown into a widely enjoyed hobby. But what is behind its rising popularity?
Studies have begun to find out what many bird-watchers feel. Research published in a scientific journal showed that people who spent time noticing birds reported better moods (心情) for much of the day. Another project found that those who live in areas with more kinds of birds are more likely to feel satisfied with their lives. Scientists believe this has to do with how our minds connect with gentle natural world.
Also, an expert from a bird research lab points out that watching a bird achieve effortless flight can be an enjoyable experience. Additionally, the bright colors, beautiful songs, and different behaviors of birds provide endless points of interest, drawing bird-watchers into their world without the need for any direct interaction.
What’s more, unlike many hobbies, it doesn’t need special training, memberships, or high costs to begin. As one expert puts it, the basic requirement is simply “a little bit of natural space”. This lets individuals (个人) and families enjoy the outdoors together.
If you’re interested in joining this trend, getting started is simple. Try setting up a bird feeder; you can even make one yourself with pine cones (松果) and peanut butter. Keep a list of the birds you see and those you hope to see. And if your family has a backyard, do what you can to make it a nice place for birds, for example, by choosing native plants that attract and protect them.
Let this new hobby take flight. You might find it brings more than just birds into your view.

It’s natural to feel upset, angry, or sad about losing. No one likes to lose, unless maybe you’re playing hide-and-seek and you’re stuck into an uncomfortable hiding spot and you kind of just want the game to be over already!
Calming yourself when you’re mad about losing is like getting calm when you’re mad about other things. It can help to take some deep breaths, do an activity that relaxes you, find something to laugh about, and let out your anger energy by doing jumping jacks or dancing yourself silly.
Once you’re calmer, it may help to think about why you felt the loss so deeply. One reason may be that you really wanted to win. That’s good! It likely makes you try hard. But try thinking of success as that you have given it your all-no matter what a scoreboard may tell you. And it drives you to take away something positive from the game, which is a great unexpected benefit.
Sometimes, we can feel a loss deeply because we’re afraid of disappointing someone. Thinking “I’m good if I win; I’m bad if I don’t” can make you upset and sad. After all, no one wins all the time. And winning doesn’t mean that you’re a kind person, a team player, or even someone who works hard. The effort you put in and how you deal with a loss show more about your character than a win does. People notice good character-and appreciate it more than you think.
So keep these in your mind: give your full attention and effort to every part of the game; besides, keep a good mood whether you win or lose, play with joy, be a good sport, make mistakes and learn from them-and next time choose hiding spots with plenty of wiggle room (回旋余地)!
Summary
It’s natural to feel upset when losing, but you need to learn how to deal with it.
First, _______58_______, you can take deep breaths, do relaxing activities, laugh a little, get rid of anger with simple moves when you are mad about a loss.
When calm, reflect on why the loss troubled you-maybe you badly wanted to win, which is good, because seeing success as giving it your all instead of _______59_______ can help you take something positive from the game.
Sometimes losses hurt because you fear disappointing others, but nobody can always win, and_______60_______. Your effort and attitude towards a loss tell more about your character than a victory does.
So finally, remember to _______61_______, even when you are facing a loss.

One evening before bed, through the windows I could see snow falling slowly down.

A. B. C. D.
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. C 35. B

Scientists believe this has to do with how our minds connect with gentle, natural world.

My Happiness
Happiness is very important in our daily life. It often hides in small things around us, and one experience still warms my heart deeply.
Last winter, I failed my math exam and felt upset. My mother didn’t blame me. Instead, she helped me review the problems patiently. She praised me for the problems I got right and said she was proud of my efforts. I felt the warmth spread through my body. That moment, I realized that happiness lay in her gentle words.
