A special event for an exhibition (展览) in London tracking the development of Chinese characters and their role in cultural exchange between China and the West began on Saturday at a gallery in London. The event combined historical shows with modern design and discussions between invited scholars and guests.
Titled “Hanzi of the West, Letters of the East,” the exhibition includes more than 100 works inspired by hanzi. The exhibition is designed as a step-by-step story that uses Chinese characters as a line to tell stories about China and about cultural experiences between China and Britain.
“The theme title invites us to see Chinese characters and alphabetic (字母的) letters not as opposites, but as ‘friends’; two different systems that both record sound, shape meaning and express emotion,” said Wu Yun, dean of the School of Foreign Studies at Tongji University.
One part of the exhibition explores how artists and designers use hanzi as a source of look and a starting point for their creations. It shows pieces that bring fresh meanings to the brush lines, the pieces that form the characters, and how they are built, through book designs, fashion, art exhibits and creative cultural products. Another section tracks the early spread of hanzi to the West and the pre-20th century efforts to systematize Chinese early printing methods.
Explanatory boards and visual timelines in the exhibition set out the development of Chinese characters from their early origins through how they changed over time. Visitors can follow how the script (笔迹) has shifted in form and use over centuries, while seeing how it continues to inspire design today.
Yukteshwar Kumar, a scholar at the University of Bath, said learning Chinese had shown him how much meaning is hidden within every character. “For me, the process of learning Chinese has been amazing, because every character has a story, and an exhibition like this helps people in Britain and China understand each other better, and that makes it very meaningful,” he said in fluent Chinese.
4. What is the main feature of the London exhibition event?
A. Focusing on traditional artworks.
B. Using advanced modern technology.
C. Inviting artists to create work on the spot.
D. Discussing cultural exchanges through characters.
5. What can be known from Wu’s words?
A. Hanzi and letters share one origin.
B. Western letters heavily influenced hanzi.
C. Hanzi and letters are not totally separate.
D. Characters can express special meanings.
6. What does the underlined word “shifted” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Changed. B. Protected. C. Spread. D. Described.
7. What does Yukteshwar Kumar think of the exhibition?
A. It is hard to understand for the British.
B. It helps deepen China-UK understanding.
C. It lacks enough character story shows.
D. It is worthwhile to further explore its hidden meanings.

We see a woman swimming at night in the dark sea. Suddenly, she is pulled underwater. She struggles in the water, cries in fear, then disappears forever. This is the opening scene from the 1975 film Jaws, showing a shark attack. Jaws was a great success, attracting huge audiences and winning many awards. However, it strengthened people’s long-held idea of the great white shark as a dangerous animal.
People have always been scared of sharks, but Jaws made things worse. Many people who saw the film started to believe that sharks were bad animals that ate humans. Some people stopped swimming in the sea, afraid of the horrible creature from the film. Other people started fishing for sharks, killing as many as they could. At that time, nobody cared if sharks were killed, or how many were killed. People just wanted them killed.
After 1975, the number of large sharks around America fell quickly, and soon fell around the world. This was not only due to fear of sharks, but also finning. Finning is a type of fishing where sharks are caught and their fins cut off. The sharks are thrown back into the sea where they die slowly and painfully. Finning kills millions of sharks a year.
Finning would have an unexpected effect upon Peter Benchley, the man who wrote the book the film Jaws was based on. In 1980, Benchley was diving when he came across an awful sight. It was an area where fishermen were finning, and the sea floor was covered with dead sharks, which caused a deep change in him. He came to see people as a danger to sharks, rather than the other way round. From that day on, he fought to protect sharks. He admitted that his book was wrong about sharks’ behaviour. “Sharks don’t target humans,” he said. Experts have proved that sharks do not see people as food, and they attack us by mistake. Only around six people are killed by sharks every year.
Fortunately, not everyone who watched the film Jaws became afraid of sharks — some became interested in understanding them. Today, as we learn more about sharks, more people than ever want to protect them from extinction.
8. How does the author lead into his topic?
A. By describing a film scene. B. By explaining a social event.
C. By conducting an interview. D. By showing a scientific research.
9. What is “finning” as described in the text??
A. The practice of feeding wild sharks. B. The illegal sports to watch sharks.
C. The hunting of cutting shark fins off. D. The method of killing sharks for study.
10. What caused Peter Benchley’s attitude change?
A. Watching the shark film.
B. Being attacked by a shark.
C. Being disagreed by animal lovers.
D. Seeing the terrible scene of shark killing.
11. What does the author want to express through the text?
A. Good books can help people protect animals.
B. Popular films have responsibility to educate people.
C. People need right understanding and protection of wildlife.
D. Human should balance economic and environmental benefits.

Researchers in Italy found the more than 2,000-year-old Etruscan and Roman statues in the area of Tuscany, where, for years, experts had unsuccessfully searched for ancient ruins.
An old neighbourhood garbage man helped in the discovery of the statues, which lay in mud (泥) at the ruins of an ancient spa (矿泉疗养地). Experts called it the biggest collection of ancient bronze statues ever found in Italy and said it would “rewrite history”.
Researchers found the statues in 2021 and 2022 in the village of San Casciano dei Bagni. The village still has public baths (浴室) open today. Researchers had long doubted ancient ruins could be discovered at the site. The first few attempts to locate the ancient baths, however, were unsuccessful. Then former garbage man and local historian Stefano Petrini, who did this just for interest, remembered that he had once seen bits of ancient Roman columns, years before, while standing in his friend’s garden. The columns Petrini saw could only be seen from that garden, opposite to where the archaeologists had been digging.
The statues found there were offerings from Romans and Etruscans who looked to the gods for good health. One of the most amazing finds was the so-called “scrawny boy”, a statue about 90 centimetres high, of a young Roman with a bone disease. A small piece of writing has his name as “Marcius Grabillo”. More unusual offerings were also among smaller objects in the discovery. These included egg shells, pine cones, medical tools and a 2,000-year-old piece of hair.
Workers had closed the spa forever about 1,600 years ago. The warm mud of the baths preserved the statues well. The experts say they may find another six or 12 statues noted in a document found at the site. The archaeologists think that it may have been left by Marcius Grabillo.
Petrini hopes the treasures will bring “jobs, culture and knowledge” to his village, which is struggling with population loss like much of rural Italy. But he does not want to take credit for the discovery. “Important things always happen thanks to several people, never thanks to only one,” he said.
12. How did Stefano Petrini contribute to the discovery?
A. He led the team as a local historian.
B. He wrote a document about the ruins.
C. He found the statues when collecting garbage.
D. He guided researchers to the columns’ location.
13. What can we know about the statues?
A. They were all statues of Roman gods.
B. They were gifts to thank and respect gods.
C. They were made by Marcius Grabillo.
D. They were used as bathhouse decorations.
14. What can be inferred about Petrini from the last paragraph?
A. He desires fame for the discovery.
B. He values group effort in important finds.
C. He believes his village will regain its popularity.
D. He plans to become a professional archaeologist.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Local Man’s Memory Leads to Major Find
B. Experts Rewrite History with Bronze Statues
C. Treasure Hunt: Archaeologists Find Italian Gold
D. Ancient Roman Baths: A New Tourist Attraction

Tom had been getting ready for the school marathon for months. Every early morning when the first sunlight fell on the campus, he’d already put on his running shoes and started running around the track. His breath made small white clouds in the cool air, and his legs sometimes hurt — a light sign that he trained too much, but he paid no attention to it.
One morning, when Tom slowed down to rest, his best friend Lily walked over with a bottle of water. “Don’t work too hard,” she said, looking worried. “Marathons need endurance (耐力), not just speed.” Tom took the water and smiled a little. “I know,” he answered, “but I want to win as my dad did.” His dad, who passed away, used to be a runner and won many races. He always told Tom to face challenges bravely.
Race day came at last. The campus was full of excitement — colorful flags blew in the wind, and students cheered loudly by the side. Tom stood at the starting line, his hands a bit sweaty. He took a deep breath, waiting for the starting gun.
When the gun went off, Tom ran as fast as he could. His legs moved quickly, and he soon got ahead of the other runners. The crowd cheered louder. For a moment, he felt like he could run forever — as if his dad were right next to him, cheering for him.
But halfway through a sudden pain came to his right ankle (脚踝) — it was worse than the pain from training. He bit his teeth to keep going. He couldn’t stop, especially since he was leading. Up ahead, Lily was helping at the water station. She saw him limping (瘸着走) in pain and shouted, “Tom, stop and check your ankle!” But he just shook his head, and his face turned pale. When he got near the final kilometer, his ankle couldn’t stand it anymore — he tripped and fell to the ground, breathing heavily.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Lily rushed to Tom’s side immediately, her eyes filled with worry.

A special event for an exhibition (展览) in London tracking the development of Chinese characters and their role in cultural exchange between China and the West began on Saturday at a gallery in London. The event combined historical shows with modern design and discussions between invited scholars and guests.
Titled “Hanzi of the West Letters of the East,” the exhibition includes more than 100 works inspired by hanzi.
B Using advanced modern technology.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. B

8 How does the author lead into his topic?

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Tom had been getting ready for the school marathon for months. Every early morning, when the first sunlight fell on the campus, he’d already put on his running shoes and started running around the track.
But halfway through, a sudden pain came to his right ankle (脚踝) — it was worse than the pain from training.

With the help of Lily and the other runners, Tom decided to walk to the finish line.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Lily rushed to Tom’s side immediately, her eyes filled with worry. She knelt beside him, gently pressing his swollen ankle while two other runners paused to help. “Let us carry you to the medic tent,” offered a tall boy, but Tom shook his head, staring at the finish line barely a kilometer away. Lily wiped sweat from his forehead and whispered, “Your dad wouldn’t want you to break yourself for this.” His father’s words echoed in his mind: “Bravery isn’t just about speed; it’s about heart.” Swallowing his frustration, he clenched his fists.
With the help of Lily and the other runners, Tom decided to walk to the finish line. Linking arms with Lily on one side and the tall runner on the other, he hobbled forward, his breath ragged but his spine straight. His vision blurred with pain and determination, but he smiled because this was his race, his way of honoring his dad. As they crossed the line together, the applause roared louder than any victory. Later, Lily teased, “Next time, listen to me sooner,” and Tom laughed, finally understanding endurance wasn’t just physical.
