After I joined the sailing trip in the South Pacific Ocean, unluckily, a heavy storm hit our ship and it broke in half. I fought against huge waves, swam and swam. By the time I felt the land under my feet, I was so tired out. I lay down on the beach and fell asleep deeply.
At sunrise, with much difficulty, I finally opened my eyes. But I found I could not move! My arms, legs, even my hair were tied to the ground! Then I felt something alive moving on my leg. It moved up over my stomach and neck until it was standing near my face. Looking down, I saw a very small creature—no bigger than my little finger!
“Where am I? What is this tiny thing?” I thought.
A tiny man! He had a bow and arrow in his hands. And there were forty more of these little men following him. Clearly, this man was their captain. They looked like an army. I was so afraid that I shouted loudly. They all jumped back and some even fell off from my body. Meanwhile, I tried hard to free myself, but just as I lifted my left arm, I felt a hundred arrows land on my free hand, my face and body.
This was very painful! I cried aloud.
I lay quietly to see what would happen next. When they saw I was no longer fighting back, the captain climbed up to speak to me. Although I could not understand his language, I understood that they would be friendly towards me—if I did not try to hurt them.
“I mean no harm to you!” I wanted to tell them aloud. But I was afraid that they would shoot me again. I decided to wait and see what would happen next.

Paper-making is one of the four greatest inventions of ancient China. Before it was invented, writing was difficult. People could only write on wood or expensive silk. Therefore, only the rich and the government could keep written records and receive education.
In the early Western Han Dynasty, people began to make paper. But it was not smooth enough for writing. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, paper-making got a big step forward after Cai Lun improved the technique. He made paper with cheap and easy-to-find materials.
First, he collected tree barks (the outer part of trees), old fishing nets and old clothes. He put these materials in special water for a few days. After that, he heated them on fire and then emptied the water. Next, he beat them with a wooden hammer to break them into small pieces. After that, he mixed the broken materials with water in a big pot to make pulp (浆). Later, he spread the pulp carefully on a bamboo screen with holes. Finally, he dried the screen in the air. With all these steps, smooth, strong paper was made.
After Cai Lun’s improvements, paper became popular and common people were able to use it. Besides books, it was key to painting and calligraphy. It was also used for making maps and packing tea or medicine. And paper money also appeared, making far trade easier and safer.
As paper-making spread to foreign countries, it helped different cultures share stories, science and art easily. It has shaped the world we live in today.

Fake news is false stories that look like real news reports, but give wrong information. It is written to interest or shock people, so they will read it further. It usually spreads across the Internet through social media apps where anyone can share information.
Types of fake news
◆ Misleading Headlines
These headlines sound exciting or surprising. They want people to click on them. But the content is not the same as the headline. Often, after you click, you will see advertisements or some useless information.
◆ Unchecked News
Some reporters write news without checking facts carefully. They don’t do enough research before the news goes out.
◆ Silly made-up Stories
These stories are usually unreal and only made up for fun. They often talk about famous people or recent events to catch people’s eyes.
How to tell real news from fake news
◆ Check where the news comes from. Has it come from a true news website? Make sure the website address is real. Also, read the “About us” part of a website to find out the owner.
◆ Look for a reporter’s name and a fresh date. Real news stories usually have a writer’s name. This will show who made the report. Besides, a story about “New rules for schools” from two years ago isn’t useful now. The news without a clear recent date could be fake or untrue now.
◆ Be attuned to features of low-quality writing: Does the article have a heading in big letters with lots of “!”? This method is used to get you to read, like, comment or even share it. Bad grammar and spelling mistakes are also often a feature of fake news.
◆ Be careful about news with photos. Remember that photos can easily be changed through soft ware programs. Do an Internet search to check the photos.
34. According to this article, what is fake news?
A. News with an attractive title.
B. News from a social media.
C. News without fact-checking.
D. News about a superstar’s life.
35. What does the underlined phrase “Be attuned to” mean?
A. Have great interest in. B. Pay close attention to.
C. Be really tired of. D. Be greatly connected to.
36. According to the article, which piece of news is most probably real?
A. B.
C. D.
37. What’s the purpose of this article?
A. To explain how fake news come out.
B. To teach people to write attractive news.
C. To tell how to avoid getting fake news.
D. To encourage people to share real news.

Are you looking for a pet? Different people have different ideas. Would you buy a pet or adopt (领养) one? As a teenager, for me, buying a pet is a choice, but adopting one is a rescue. ____38____
First, you are saving a life. This may be the most important reason. You’re providing pets with a second chance at life. ____39____ They had to find food by themselves and had no safe place to stay. By adopting, you are giving them a safe and loving home. They can be happy and healthy again.
____40____ When you adopt a dog instead of getting it from a shop, you are helping the homeless animals. Most pet shops keep a large number of pets. If some pets fail to find buyers, the shop can’t make money from them. ____41____ By adopting, there would be fewer homeless ones.
Finally, think about the benefits of adopting adult pets. They often already know some basic manners, like using the toilet in the right place. ____42____ If you like to train a young pet, adoption centers also have many puppies and kittens for you to choose from.
All in all, adopting is good for you and the animal. It saves lives and helps homeless pets. It’s also practical—you can choose either an adult pet or a young one. These are my thoughts. What about yours?
A. As a result, they will end up on the streets.
B. Adopting a pet is often a more meaningful choice, and here is why.
C. In their past life, many of these animals had to live on the streets.
D. This makes them fit into your home more smoothly and easily.
E. Adoption also directly supports animals in need.
“Everything is possible when you have the right people to support you.” I truly learned this from Emily, a local Australian girl, during my exchange year there.
We first spoke to each other in a maths class. The teacher wrote a difficult question on the board. Emily sat next to me. She looked confused and asked me softly, “Helen, can you help me with this?”
My English wasn’t good at all, but maths was my best subject. I really wanted to help. But I was worried, “Will my broken English make her more confused? Would she even understand me?” I took a deep breath, wrote down the steps slowly and explained them word by word. To my surprise, she nodded and smiled, “You would become a great teacher one day!” Those words were of great help. Although English still felt like a big challenge in a foreign country, I found the courage to keep trying.
Later on, she often corrected my English writings and practised speaking with me at school. After school, she also introduced me to her friends and took me to a lot of parties and events. As time went by, I began to feel at home. When I got my first part-time job, she encouraged me to talk more with different people at work.
Now, I’m studying at a university in Australia and work as a part-time Chinese teacher. When I see the confusion and hope in the eyes of new exchange students, I see myself from years ago. And this time I’m the right person for them.

A. Have great interest in. B. Pay close attention to.
C. Be really tired of. D. Be greatly connected to.

A. B.
C D.
37. What’s the purpose of this article?

C. To tell how to avoid getting fake news.
D. To encourage people to share real news.

Farmers found a dinosaur in the field!”听起来很夸张,符合误导性标题的特点,很可能是假新闻;B选项新闻标题“China companies race to build AI in space”相对比较客观陈述事实,没有明显的假新闻特征;C选项新闻标题“THE SECRET SCIENTISTS WON'T TELL...!!!” D选项新闻标题“Doctors HATE this!

根据“how to win the race”可知,此处表示想知道如何赢得比赛,结合首字母提示,wonder“想知道”符合语境,且根据“He always lost the game.”

根据“Here is a perfect plan just for you!”

Has ②. brought ③. great ④. changes

How to put on a great show
Good morning, my dear teachers and students! I am happy to give a speech here. I would like to tell you how to put on a great school play.
First of all, choose a great story. We can look up short, funny stories online, as they are easy to understand and will keep the audience interested. Next, spend time memorizing your lines. You can retell the story to your classmates or practice reading lines aloud together; this will help you remember them more quickly. Finally, when you put on the show, speak loudly and clearly so that everyone can hear you. Also, try to act with your body language and facial expressions to make your performance more lively.
Thank you for your listening!
