B “ARE WE ALONE in the universe?” This question is posed by Meenakshi Wadhwa, a planetary scientist linked to NASA, to her engaged class at Arizona State University. In this lecture hall, the presence of hearing aids signals something unique — many of the students are senior citizens. Mirabella, a 20-storey “university retirement community” on ASU’s campus, is home to over 300 retired people. Since its opening in 2020 during the pandemic, it has been highly popular. The residents here are having a wonderful time. They hold university passes, which enable them to participate in classes and cultural events just like regular students, yet without the burden of exams. Golf buggies are available for transportation, though many are fit enough for mountain biking. This is a growing trend. Around 85 colleges in America are affiliated with some form of senior living, a concept that emerged in the 1980s. Today, universities from Central Florida to Iowa State to Stanford offer senior-living arrangements. Andrew Carle, at Georgetown University, estimates that as many as 20,000 older Americans live like this. With more than 10,000 baby-boomers in America turning 65 every day, the opportunity for alternative forms of retirement is large. For universities, welcoming the retired can make sense too. Many face an “enrolment cliff”, caused partly by demographic (人口的) shifts. Nationally, undergraduate enrolment dropped from over 18m in 2010 to below 16m in 2022. Mr Carle regularly consults with universities who wonder what to do with the extra space. The smartest ones, he says, provide a series of care even for the very last stage of life. “The charity is the icing on the cake,” he says of the potential that residents will include universities in their wills. Bill Gates — not that one, but an 80-year-old former newspaper editor — moved to Mirabella with his wife, who has a PhD in chemistry, two years ago. They have made friends with both fellow residents and younger students. “Being among young people is really uplifting,” says Mr Gates. At “pizza and a slice of future”, a discussion group about AI with pizza served halfway through, one of the topics was whether a lifespan of 200 or 250 years would be desirable. “The 20-year-olds were enthusiastic,” he reflects, but those in their 70s and 80s “had some reservations”, he chuckles. 24. What benefits do senior residents get from “university retirement community”? A. They can teach courses. B. They can get free medical care. C. They can work part-time on campus. D. They can enjoy campus resources and facilities. 25. What does the underlined expression “are affiliated with” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. are ignorant of B. are competent in C. are separated from D. are associated with 26. What can be inferred about the trend? A. It is a sudden success. B. It is a win-win situation. C. It causes great anxiety for Carle. D. It enables baby-boomers to retire later. 27. What does the discussion about lifespan imply? A. AI has a great impact on people’s view of lifespan. B. Long lifespan will be a common phenomenon soon. C. Young people are more concerned about health issues. D. Different views are likely to appear between two generations. C First impressions can be harsh. One mistake, and you might feel like you’ll forever be seen as an idiot (笨蛋) in someone’s eyes. However, I believe reality is kinder than that. Making a first impression is like trying to keep a door open with your foot. Many encounters with strangers are brief and may never happen again. Sometimes that can be a blessing: If the person you meet doesn’t care to remember you, you’ll quickly fade into the crowd of strangers in their mind, avoiding any negative or lasting impression. Other times, it can be disappointing — imagine striking up a conversation with someone interesting only to part ways before exchanging contact information. To avoid being forgotten, you need to do something memorable — but not something foolish. Make an impression by asking an insightful question or making someone laugh. This means taking risks and avoiding bland (乏味的) small talk; if that’s all you offer, you’ll likely be pushed to the back of their memory, unlikely to be remembered again. But what if you messed up your first impression? And one day you see them looking at you, recalling the time you embarrassed yourself, and they’re walking toward you thinking, “I know you from somewhere...” In that case, your second impression needs to be better. In my 19 years of making first impressions — some not so great — I’ve found that people will give you a second chance if you give them something to care about. Just because you messed up the first time doesn’t mean you should withdraw and stop being interesting. If anything, you should try harder: Listen well, ask relevant questions, smile often, tell a joke, and share what you care about. None of this is a guaranteed “How to Make People Like You” guide, by the way. I’m not even sure if any of this works. But people seem to like talking to me, so maybe some of it does work. Anyway, if this is your first impression of me, I hope it’s been a good one. 28. What does paragraph 2 focus on about first impressions? A. They are brief and temporary. B. They are casual and interesting. C. They are important and lasting. D. They are negative and dynamic. 29. How can you make a memorable first impression, according to the author? A. By engaging in small talk. B. By avoiding risky behavior. C. By demonstrating insight or humor. D. By sharing your personal experiences. 30. What tone does the author take when discussing the effectiveness of his advice? A. Playful. B. Uncertain. C. Serious. D. Convincing. 31. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Making a Good First Impression B. The True Art of First Impression C. Why Second Impression More D. The Lasting Impact of First Impression D You had to be really unlucky to be on the China National Highway 110 on August 14, 2025. One of the longest traffic jams on record, trapping thousands of vehicles over more than 100 kilometers and lasting more than 10 days. Would it make you impatient? I strongly suspect that even the calmest would answer with a resounding “yes”! And yet philosophers and poets alike sell patience as a “virtue”, implying that having it is always a good thing. To me, it’s far more useful to think about patience as something we do rather than something we have. Consider first what it means to be impatient. We all know the feeling: fingers drumming the table, leg bouncing. But why does this frustrating feeling arise? Most emotion researchers take it as a functionalist perspective. Our mind and body are trying to tell us to get moving, to find a way to bring the unpleasant delay to an end. In a series of recent studies with more than 1,400 participants, we found that people were more impatient when the thing they were waiting for was very appealing — and when the wait itself was unappealing. Being delayed for something you hate, such as an unpleasant work event, is easier than a similar delay for a much-anticipated performance by your favorite band. If impatience is an emotion, what is patience? In technical terms, it’s a form of emotion regulation like reminding ourselves that the scary movie isn’t real. When we start to feel impatient, we can let that feeling rage—or we can regulate it. Are you waiting weeks to find out if you have got that job? Dive into your favorite hobby to distract yourself for a few hours. There’s still a lot we don’t know about patience, including why some people seem to find it easier than others and how we can get better at it. Fortunately, those are simpler questions to answer when we reduce the challenge from virtue acquisition to emotion regulation. Ultimately, it may seem like a sharp contrast to poetic descriptions of virtue, but I’ll take practical wisdom over virtue any day. 32. What is the author’s attitude to people’s impatience in traffic jams on the National Highway 110? A. Understanding. B. Dismissive. C. Indifferent. D. Critical. 33. According to the text, which of the following situations would make people the most impatient? A. Being stuck in a traffic jam in a comfortable car. B. Being delayed by bad weather on the way to work. C. Waiting for an important but unpleasant work meeting. D. Waiting in a long queue for an expected football game. 34. The author views patience as _________. A. an acquired virtue B. a born personality C. a form of releasing emotion D. a behavior of regulating emotion 35. What is the purpose of the text? A. To justify a virtue. B. To redefine patience. C. To introduce strategies. D. To identify impatience. I’ve spent 30 years in schools, watching thousands of parents engage with kids and educators. Too often, parents interfere too much, thus depriving children of confidence that might have come from struggle while exhausting themselves. ____36____ Most Americans, nowadays, think young people won’t outperform their parents, facing fiercer competition for college admissions, jobs and housing. Therefore, they take more pains to help kids get ahead without complaints. Biologically, parents are wired to protect kids from suffering instead of being depressed to watch them struggle. Their first response is to remove obstacles, which are easy for adults but overwhelming for kids. ____37____ It leads to “Helicopter Parents” who fly in to rescue the children in crisis and “Snowplow Parents” who are willing to clear all the obstacles in their children’s way. A young person who grows accustomed to having a parent intervene on his behalf feels anxious and sometimes at a loss. ____38____ Personally, I advocate for “Lighthouse Parents”: ____39____ For instance, a child comes home feeling overwhelmed by school and frustrated that she is doing all the work for a big project that is due next week. The parents just acknowledge her: “Wow, that sounds a lot. I can tell you are working really hard. Do you have ideas about what you want to do?” ____40____ Likewise, by setting boundaries and supporting kids while letting them navigate challenges, Lighthouse Parents allow their children the freedom to handle hard situations independently to overcome them. The key is learning when to step back and let them feel and pick their own way. A. They guide rather than control. B. Lighthouse Parents, by contrast, listen first. C. Such parents want to “fix” everything quickly. D. This desire to protect often has an opposite effect. E. Though this has long been the case, it’s worsening. F. He is too dependent to have faith in his own ability. G. Lighthouses are used to guide sailors to avoid crashing into rocks. Several years ago, I was teaching in Melbourne. I was a librarian, a job that had defined my existence for over two decades. My days were spent among the quiet rows of books. I knew every corner of the library, every title on the shelves, and yet, I felt as if my own life was missing a chapter. It was a typical Tuesday morning. I was sorting through a box of old donations, preparing to catalog some rare books, when I found a small, yellowed envelope between the pages of an ancient journal. It had no address, no stamp, and no indication of its origin. Curious, I carefully opened it. The handwriting was elegant but faded, the ink barely visible against the paper. The letter read, “Dear Stranger, If you are reading this, know that you are not alone. Life has a way of making us feel isolated, as if our stories are insignificant. But every life matters. Every story is important. I hope the letter finds someone who needs to hear these words. You are stronger than you think. You have the power to change your world, one small act at a time. Don’t be afraid to take risks, to follow your dreams, and to embrace the unknown. The greatest journeys begin with a single step. With hope, A Friend” I read the letter over and over, feeling a strange mix of emotions. The words resonated deeply within me, as if they were written specifically for me. I had always been content with my life, but lately, I felt a growing sense of restlessness. The library was my sanctuary (庇护所), but it had also become my prison. I had lost sight of my own dreams, my own story. That evening, as I closed the library, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the letter was a sign. I had always been cautious, preferring the safety of routine to the uncertainty of change. But the letter reminded me that life was meant to be lived, not just observed. Paragraph 1: The next morning, I walked into the library director’s office, saying with resolution, “I have an idea.” ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Weeks later, the moveable library program started, bringing libraries to different communities. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 徐州三中2026届高三学情调研 英语试题 第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 1. What cuisine does the woman prefer? Then, at the youthful age of nine, I penned my first play with the intention of performing it on the school stage. But it never happened. W: When you were 18, you had the choice of going to acting school or teacher training college. Why did you go for teaching? M: Well, I suppose I was persuaded by my parents. They were worried about my future, though I was confident I’d find my way as an actor. Even my English teacher was encouraging me to try acting, so it was a difficult decision. W: Anyway, you spent 18 years in the classroom. What made you then turn to acting? M: It was my wife who pushed me towards the stage. W: And how did you get your first part? M: Well, my wife and I went to see a new play and as I sat in the audience, I recognized the main actress. She was someone I’d taught several years earlier. Well, afterwards we talked and she introduced me to the play’s director who later offered me a wonderful role in another play by the same writer. W: Lucky you! Then what is your big goal in life? M: I suppose I should be happy to go on acting in plays, though my dream is to get into films. W: Well, I wish you good luck, Roger. M: Thanks. A 18. B 19. B 20. W: An uplifting story has popped up in our news feeds. Four children who were missing and feared dead after a plane crash a month ago have been found alive and well. The brothers and sisters, aged thirteen, nine, four and a one-year-old baby, were on a plane that crashed in the Amazon jungle in Colombia on May the first. The children’s mother, the pilot and co-pilot passed away in the crash. Before the plane disappeared, the pilot made an emergency call for engine failure. Moments later, it disappeared from the tracking system. The children had been missing for 40 days when members of Colombia’s military found them. A news agency said people from the Huioto native group in the jungle aided the soldiers’ search. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro said news of the children’s discovery was “a joy for the whole country” and a “magical day”. He added, “They were alone. They themselves accomplished an example of total survival which will remain in history. These children are today the children of peace and the children of Colombia.” Colombia’s Civil Aviation Authority issued a statement regarding how the children survived. It believes the children escaped the crash site and walked through the jungle in search of help. The children belong to the Huioto group. Their knowledge of what can be eaten in the jungle and their experience of the landscape probably gave them a better chance of survival. A Wildlife Photography Competition BBC Wildlife magazine is launching a wildlife photography competition in association with Belize Tourism Board to look for exceptional photos worldwide. D 25. D 26. B 27. 根据第二段“They hold university passes, which enable them to participate in classes and cultural events just like regular students, yet without the burden of exams. Golf buggies are available for transportation, though many are fit enough for mountain biking(他们持有大学通行证,能像普通学生一样参加课程和文化活动,却无需承担考试的压力。社区还提供高尔夫球车作为交通工具,尽管很多老人身体健朗,还能骑山地车)”可知,大学退休社区的老年住户能享受校园的课程、文化活动等资源,也能使用社区配备的交通等设施。故选D。 【25题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段“This is a growing trend. Around 85 colleges in America are affiliated with some form of senior living, a concept that emerged in the 1980s. Today, universities from Central Florida to Iowa State to Stanford offer senior-living arrangements(这是一个日益兴起的趋势。 Many face an “enrolment cliff”, caused partly by demographic (人口的) shifts. Nationally, undergraduate enrolment dropped from over 18m in 2010 to below 16m in 2022. Mr Carle regularly consults with universities who wonder what to do with the extra space. The smartest ones, he says, provide a series of care even for the very last stage of life. “The charity is the icing on the cake,” he says of the potential that residents will include universities in their wills(对于大学来说,接纳退休人员也有其合理性。 根据最后一段“At “pizza and a slice of future”, a discussion group about AI with pizza served halfway through, one of the topics was whether a lifespan of 200 or 250 years would be desirable. “The 20-year-olds were enthusiastic,” he reflects, but those in their 70s and 80s “had some reservations”, he chuckles(在“披萨与未来的一小步”这个关于人工智能的讨论活动中,活动中途会提供披萨作为点心,其中一个讨论话题是:200年或250年的寿命是否可取。他回忆道:“20 岁左右的年轻人态度积极”,但70多岁和80多岁的参与者“则有些保留意见”,他笑着说。)”可知,关于延长寿命这一话题,年轻人和老年人群体的态度截然不同,由此可推断这一讨论暗示了两代人之间很可能会出现不同的观点。故选D。 C First impressions can be harsh. The Lasting Impact of First Impression 【答案】28. A 29. C 30. B 31. 根据第二段“Making a first impression is like trying to keep a door open with your foot. Many encounters with strangers are brief and may never happen again. Sometimes that can be a blessing: If the person you meet doesn’t care to remember you, you’ll quickly fade into the crowd of strangers in their mind, avoiding any negative or lasting impression. Other times, it can be disappointing — imagine striking up a conversation with someone interesting only to part ways before exchanging contact information.(给人留下第一印象就像试图用脚去撑开一扇门。与陌生人的接触往往是短暂的,而且可能不会再有下一次机会。有时这反而是一件好事:如果遇到的人并不愿意记住你,那你很快就会融入他们脑海中的众多陌生人之中,避免留下任何负面或持久的印象。但有时也会令人失望——想象一下,你与一位有趣的人搭起话来,结果却在交换联系方式之前就分道扬镳了)”可知,第一印象是简短且短暂的。故选A。 根据第三段“Make an impression by asking an insightful question or making someone laugh.(通过提出一个有深度的问题或者逗人发笑来给人留下深刻的印象)”可知,展现洞察力或幽默感才能留下令人难忘的第一印象。 根据倒数第二段“None of this is a guaranteed “How to Make People Like You” guide, by the way. I’m not even sure if any of this works. But people seem to like talking to me, so maybe some of it does work.(顺便说一下,这一切都不构成一份“如何让别人喜欢你”的保证式指南。我甚至不确定其中任何一条是否有效。但人们似乎愿意和我交流,所以也许其中有些方法确实有效)”可知,作者在论述其建议的有效性时语气不确定。故选B。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“First impressions can be harsh. One mistake, and you might feel like you’ll forever be seen as an idiot (笨蛋) in someone’s eyes. However, I believe reality is kinder than that.(第一印象的杀伤力可能很大。但凡出一点差错,你或许就会觉得自己在别人眼里会永远是个笨蛋。不过,我相信现实并没有那么刻薄)”结合本文指出第一印象并非永久定论,它往往短暂易逝;建议人们用见解或幽默留下好印象,若搞砸初次印象,可通过积极表现重塑二次印象。可知,B选项“第一印象的艺术”最符合文章标题。故选B。 D You had to be really unlucky to be on the China National Highway 110 on August 14, 2025. A 33. D 34. D 35. 根据第一段“You had to be really unlucky to be on the China National Highway 110 on August 14, 2025. To me, it’s far more useful to think about patience as something we do rather than something we have.(2025年8月14日,你要是开车行驶在110国道上,那可真是够倒霉的了。 故选A。 根据第三段“In a series of recent studies with more than 1,400 participants, we found that people were more impatient when the thing they were waiting for was very appealing — and when the wait itself was unappealing.(在最近的一系列研究中,我们对超过1400名参与者进行了调查。研究发现,当人们所等待的事情极具吸引力,而等待的过程本身又毫无吸引力时,他们就会更加不耐烦)”可知,当等待的目标非常吸引人,且等待过程本身令人不悦时,人们会更不耐烦。D项“为了一场期待的足球比赛排长队”完全符合这两个条件:足球比赛是“吸引人的目标”,排长队是“不悦的等待过程”。故选D。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“In technical terms, it’s a form of emotion regulation like reminding ourselves that the scary movie isn’t real.(从技术层面来讲,这属于一种情绪调节的方式,就像提醒自己那部恐怖电影并非真实存在一样)”以及最后一句“Dive into your favorite hobby to distract yourself for a few hours.(投身于你最喜爱的爱好中,让自己暂时忘却烦恼,放松一下,享受几个小时的宁静时光吧)”可知,耐心是一种行为。 I’ve spent 30 years in schools, watching thousands of parents engage with kids and educators. E 37. D 38. F 39. A 40. 【36题详解】 上文“Too often, parents interfere too much, thus depriving children of confidence that might have come from struggle while exhausting themselves. (父母往往干预过多,这不仅剥夺了孩子从挫折中获得自信的机会,也让自己筋疲力尽。)”点明父母过度干预孩子的现象及弊端,下文“Most Americans, nowadays, think young people won’t outperform their parents, facing fiercer competition for college admissions, jobs and housing. Therefore, they take more pains to help kids get ahead without complaints. (如今,大多数美国人认为年轻人无法超越父辈,他们面临着大学录取、工作和住房方面更激烈的竞争。因此,父母们不辞辛劳地帮助孩子取得成功。)”说明当下这一现象愈发严重的原因和表现。E项“尽管这种情况长期存在,但如今愈发严重了”承上启下,既承接上文提及的父母过度干预的现象,又通过递进引出下文该现象加剧的现状,逻辑连贯。故选E。 【37题详解】 上文“Biologically, parents are wired to protect kids from suffering instead of being depressed to watch them struggle. Their first response is to remove obstacles, which are easy for adults but overwhelming for kids. (从生理上讲,父母天生就会保护孩子免受苦难,不愿看着他们挣扎。他们的第一反应是清除障碍,这些障碍对成年人来说轻而易举,但对孩子来说却难以应对。)”说明父母保护孩子、为其清除障碍的本能行为,下文“It leads to “Helicopter Parents” who fly in to rescue the children in crisis and “Snowplow Parents” who are willing to clear all the obstacles in their children’s way. A young person who grows accustomed to having a parent intervene on his behalf feels anxious and sometimes at a loss. The parents just acknowledge her: “Wow, that sounds a lot. I can tell you are working really hard. Do you have ideas about what you want to do?” (例如,一个孩子放学回家,因学校的事情感到心力交瘁,还为下周要交的一个大型项目独自承担所有工作而沮丧。父母只是对她说:“哇,这听起来真的不容易。我能看出来你真的很努力。你有什么想做的打算吗?”)” 用例子具体说明灯塔父母的做法。A项“他们引导孩子,而非控制孩子”承上启下,精准概括了灯塔父母的核心育儿理念,同时为下文的举例做总起,符合语境。故选A。 【40题详解】 下文“Likewise, by setting boundaries and supporting kids while letting them navigate challenges, Lighthouse Parents allow their children the freedom to handle hard situations independently to overcome them. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The next morning, I walked into the library director’s office, saying with resolution, “I have an idea.” The director looked up from her desk, her eyes filled with curiosity. Taking a deep breath, I explained my idea to organize a moveable library program, bringing books and stories to those who had no access. I suggested reaching out to schools, nursing homes, and shelters - places where people might need a little bit of hope and connection. The director’s expression softened, and she nodded thoughtfully. “That’s a wonderful idea,” she agreed. With her support, I threw myself into the project. After hours of planning, contacting local organizations, and gathering resources, I enlisted the help of a few enthusiastic volunteers. The preparation work went smoothly. Weeks later, the moveable library program started, bringing libraries to different communities. The first stop was a local elementary school, where we set up a reading corner in the library, equipped with colorful books and cozy seats. As I read aloud to a group of wide-eyed children, I saw their faces light up with wonder. For a moment, I forgot about my own doubts and fears. I was reminded of the joy that books could bring, and the importance of sharing that joy with others. The following months witnessed our library touched the lives of countless people in diverse places ranging from nursing homes, orphanages to hospitals. Each visit was a reminder of the letter’s words: “You have the power to change your world, one small act at a time.” 词汇激活: 行为类 ①建议:suggest/advise/propose ②联系:contact/get in touch with ③建立:set up/establish 情绪类 ①怀疑:doubt/suspicion ②快乐:joy/delight/happiness 【点睛】[高分句型1] Taking a deep breath, I explained my idea to organize a moveable library program, bringing books and stories to those who had no access.
