一、阅读理解
My Town-Newquay
by Alex Howarth,14
I live in Newquay. It’s a small town on the Atlantic coast in the south of England. It has got great beaches and is the best place to surf in the UK. There are lots of surf schools where you can learn how to surf. I go surfing with my friends every weekend. My favourite place is Fistral Beach.
I love Newquay because there are lots of other things to do as well as surfing. If you like water sports, you can go kayaking, water-skiing or coasteering. Coasteering is different because it is rock climbing, jumping into the sea and swimming in the same activity, but you should always go with a special instructor.
If you like animals you can also visit the Blue Reef Aquarium and see lots of different fish and even sharks. You can also go horse riding on the beach or visit Newquay Zoo. There are lots of other attractions too like mini golf and bowling. Come and see for yourself!

Last year, I went on holiday to southern Spain with my best friends, Jenny and Alice.
The Spanish people are very warm to visitors. Although I suggest you should know a few simple words in Spanish to communicate with local people, the Spanish people are willing (乐意的) to speak in English. When we arrived, we didn’t know where to find a hotel. I approached an old man and asked him for help politely. With his help, we got to a cheap but wonderful hotel, which even had a swimming pool. There we really enjoyed ourselves.
This year, Jenny is going to the UK with her parents, so it will be just Alice and me. Alice wants us to go on an adventure holiday in Africa. That means we have to go walking in the desert and sleep out in the open. She says it will be better than having a lazy holiday because we will learn about the world around us and see some wild animals. I’m not sure whether I want to go to Africa. For me, a holiday means relaxing on a beach not walking all the way. Alice says that we will see elephants and have some amazing experiences. I think she’s bored with lying in the sun all day. I have to make up my mind by next Monday so that she can buy plane tickets. It will cost 1,400 dollars each to go to Africa, but for two weeks in France, less than half that money will be enough.

It was the first day of our vacation on Cortes. a beautiful and quiet island. “Mobile phone, mobile phone, mobile phone,” my 10-year-old son Colin kept moaning. In front of him was a big window facing the blue ocean. And the cool gentle wind was coming in from the door. Clearly, he did not see or feel any of them. If we were at home, I would give up and hand the phone over to him after five minutes because of this kind of moaning.
But it was not the situation here. Before leaving, I told my son the rule—no e-mails, no video games, and no mobile phones. We came here to get away from them all. Here we were on our first day. And already, he couldn’t stand it.
I just walked outside to leave him alone. I walked down the grass road to the beach and looked out at the sea. My 6-year-old daughter and my husband were drawing on pieces of wood. They were doing just fine.
On the second day, we spent the whole morning playing with sand. This time, my son joined us. He collected starfish and other sea treasures. When we got back to our little wood house, I gave my son a book, and put him on the lovely garden chair. It was almost dinner when he looked up.
The next few days passed in peace... On the sixth day, my son was lying beside me on the beach, watching the sun going down. He was playing with the sand. And there was something shining in his eyes. I realized how time slowed down for both of us. It was exactly what I wanted. Finally, we were able to sit quietly without thinking about screens, phone calls or e-mails. A week away from all the electronics is good.

Are you ready to take a trip with your family during the coming winter holiday? Will it be a “special forces-style trip” (特种兵式旅游), a “laid-back trip (摆烂式旅游)”, or a “relaxing trip”? The choices seem never-ending. So why have so many new travel methods appeared in just a few years? 17
For one, young people don’t like fixed plans anymore. 18 Some even go to small towns for music festivals or comic performances, choosing personal interests over popular places. Many also start trips without any plans, enjoying surprises along the way. One person wrote on the Internet, “Arriving in Datong, Shanxi, in an hour. Any suggestions for relaxing dining and activities?”

The TV play To the Wonder took the country by storm. Many people watched it. They were amazed at the natural beauty of Altay, Xinjiang and the special traditions of the people there. Last month, I took a trip to Altay, and I can surely say that it is as wonderful as it is on TV.
When I got off the plane and set foot in Altay, I was shocked by its beauty. The blue water of the lake and the white clouds in the sky made me wonder if it was a fairyland. As I looked across the grasslands, the snow-covered mountains suddenly said hello to me. Oh, it was actually in summer. Then, groups of cows and sheep caught my attention. It seemed as if these lovely animals had stepped out of a painting. People drove them, living nicely with nature. Their way of life showed that they believed a good environment is their best treasure.
Visiting Altay was a real eye-opener for me. During my stay with a Hui family, they made roast (烤制的;烘烤的) baozi. When Kazakh neighbors came over, we shared the delicious baozi. Another day, I experienced a wedding. The groom (新郎) was Mongol, and the bride (新娘) was Sibe. Their wedding mixed traditions from both cultures. The whole village came to celebrate. I knew then that national unity (团结) doesn’t simply exist there, but that it’s openly celebrated.
Altay, my wonder, can be yours too. If you can, why not go on a trip to Altay with your family?

Dear Mark,
How is everything going? I’m writing to invite you to visit Dalian, my hometown. My suggested two-day plan is as follows.
On the first day, we will visit famous spots like Xinghai Square and Dalian Forest Zoo. You’ll be amazed by the city’s beauty. On the second day, I plan to take you to an island in Changhai County. We can experience local fishermen’s life and enjoy a beautiful sunset. After that, we’ll go downtown to buy gifts and prepare for your next stop in China.
It will be an unforgettable trip. I’m looking forward to your visit!
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hui
