To find out about people’s idea of happiness, a survey has been conducted recently, where 120 people between the ages of 16 and 70, both male and 75% their body their work efficiency female, were randomly interviewed. Let’s look at the survey results. Overall, the three most important factors that contribute to happiness are close relationships, health and success at work. About 87% of the interviewees believe that their happiness mostly comes from family and friends, while 72% of the interviewees regard health as an important source of happiness. The third contributing factor for happiness is a successful career, with 55% of the interviewees reporting that success at work makes them happy. When it comes to finding more happiness, the interviewees make their own plan.Three quarters of the interviewees plan to spend more time with those that matter to them. They would like to talk to their family and friends more often and do some fun activities together on a regular basis. On the other hand, two thirds of the interviewees believe they can be happier by taking better care of their body. They plan to walk or cycle to school or work, take part in sports activities, or simply turn off the TV and go for a walk. Eating healthy nutritious food and getting at least eight hours’ sleep per night are also popular choices. Also, 56% of the interviewees are ready to improve their work efficiency so as to be more successful at work, for example by sharpening their soft skills and planning their tasks better. What this survey suggests is happiness comes from the choices we make rather than happen on its own, so make that decision to be happy today!这项调查表明,幸福并非自然而然就会降临,而是源于我们所做出的选择。所以,让我们今天就下定决心去追求幸福吧! B. After listening to the report, Theo began to write a story about a man who finally found happiness. Read the first part of the story and fill in the table below. Finding happiness in life (Part I) When John walked into the dining room in the morning, his wife Jenny and his two children, Kevin and Sophie, were sitting at the table. The atmosphere was frosty as John sat down. frosty  /ˈfrɒsti/ 冷淡的;冷若冰霜的 Sophie, who was only five years old, gave her father a weak smile. Kevin, his teenage son, didn’t look up from his food. Jenny looked at him silently with her arms folded across her chest. “OK,” John began, “I’m sorry. I know I let everyone down yesterday.” Kevin looked accusingly at his father. “You missed my music performance at school ... again! You’ve never come to see me do anything,” he said angrily. let sb down不能帮助,不能支持(某人);使失望 ac·cus·ing /əˈkjuːzɪŋ/ 谴责的;指责的 Jenny placed a hand on John’s shoulder. “That’s true! John, you always miss family activities. The last time we had a family outing was five months ago! And I’m exhausted from all the housework.” As he drank his coffee, John reflected on his life. He had so much to be thankful for: a successful business, a harmonious family and a lovely home. In fact, he had everything he had ever wanted, but he knew something was wrong. He had always believed that with hard work, he could make his family happy. But he realized he was failing. He was spending more time at work and less time at home. He was working in the office until late in the evening and even during weekends. When at home, he was talking on the phone with his clients or sitting in front of the computer reading or writing emails. He was neglecting his family. He hadn’t taken his wife to a nice restaurant for months. Kevin was passionate about music, but John couldn’t remember the last time he saw Kevin perform at a school concert. Sophie was growing up fast and John had even missed her last birthday party. John realized he had become an absent husband and an absent father. ab·sent不与子女一起住的, 不称职的 Setting Characters Plot John’s home John, his wife Jenny, his teenage son Kevin and his five-year-old daughter Sophie John’s family were not happy with John because he ignored them. John had been busy with his work, and he thought he could make his family happy with hard work, but then he realized that something was wrong. C.In pairs, discuss what might happen next in the story. Use the following questions to help you. • How would John redefine happiness? • What changes might he make? • How would his life improve in the end? Possible answer A: John’s eyes were opened to the truth about his idea of happiness. He believed that his hard work could make his family happy, but that wasn’t true. 约翰终于明白了自己所认为的“幸福”到底意味着什么。 open sb's eyes (to sth)(使人)长见识(或开眼界、认清事实) B: Yes. He finally realized it made him an absent husband and an absent father. So redefining “happiness” would mean making his family his number one priority. To do this, he must spend less time working and more time with his family. A: I agree. That means only working during office hours, which would free up his evenings and weekends for family time. number one priority首位,第一要务 office hours办公时间 free sb/sth (up) 使可用(于某目的) A: You’re right. A clear boundary between his work time and family time is important. Besides, he must spend quality time with his wife and children, separately and together. B: Correct. He should help Jenny with some household chores and shopping at weekends. A: He should also try to attend all activities involving his children. He must support Kevin’s passion for music and attend his performances. quality time  (尤指关爱子女,增进感情的)黄金时光 Sophie may be young, but she would remember John missing her birthday party. So, he must never do that again! B: I believe these changes would improve John’s family life enormously. His family would know they are important to him and their attitude would become more positive, making everyone happier and the family grow closer together. A: Definitely! I also think he would improve his work efficiency and productivity. △By reducing the amount of time spent on work, John may become more enthusiastic about his job and more focused on what needs to be done. B: Exactly. John would finally discover the secret to happiness and everyone in the family would benefit from John’s new idea of happiness! D.Write two paragraphs to complete the story. The first sentence of each paragraph has been given. Use your ideas from part C and the information in parts A and B to help you. Check and improve your writing after you finish it. Finding happiness in life (PartⅡ) Later that day, John went to work, determined to make some changes. He knew that it was time to reassess his life, make his family his number one priority, and be a more caring husband and father. He informed his staff and clients that from now on, he would be working during office hours only.He also promised himself that he would attend all activities involving his children and share household tasks with his wife.Indeed, this coming weekend, after helping Jenny with the shopping, he would take his family to the local park for a day out(一日游). re·assess /ˌriːəˈses/ 重新考虑;再次评价 Soon, John felt a big improvement in his life and work. By making changes, he found the right work-life balance to be both effective at work and happy at home. Amazingly, by reducing the amount of time spent on work, John had become much more enthusiastic about his job and more focused on what needed to be done. The result was improved work efficiency and increased productivity. Besides, as John spent more time at home, the family had grown closer together. Jenny was less tired than before, his relationship with Kevin was improving, and he was a proud father at Sophie’s birthday party! To his satisfaction, John had finally discovered the secret to happiness. Building skills Page 74 A. I’m amazed by what she’s done to improve the lives of so many young girls in the rural areas of Yunnan. Jenny: Me too. It’s incredible how selfless people can be. Just like Zhang, there are many other ordinary people whose selfless acts make them truly extraordinary.Wang Jicai and his wife Wang Shihua are just two of them, who dedicated themselves to protecting Kaishan Island. Have you heard of them? Simon: Yes, but I don’t know too much. Kaishan Island is very important to our country, isn’t it? Jenny: Absolutely! It’s a crucial defence station in the Yellow Sea. It must be manned [保卫(防御工事),在...岗位上工作,操作(机器)等 ] at all times. Wang Jicai became the island’s guardian in 1986, when he was only 26. His wife joined him later. Simon: What was life on the island like? Jenny: When they first arrived, there was no electricity, fresh water or home comforts on the island. The conditions were harsh(恶劣的;艰苦的), but Wang and his wife persevered. Simon: What did they do there? Jenny: Every day, they raised the national flag high, rain or shine. They monitored sea and weather conditions, and rescued people at sea. They even reported and helped solve multiple illegal cases, protecting our country from suffering huge financial losses. Simon: Wow, that’s impressive! They were totally committed to protecting not just the island but the whole country in their duties. come rain, come shine/(come) rain or shine不论是雨或是晴;不管发生什么事 Jenny: Exactly. Their actions are a fine example of what ordinary people can do for our country. Sadly, Wang died on duty(以身殉职) after serving our nation for 32 years. But his wife continues to guard the island. Simon: The story of their passion and sacrifice is really inspiring! A3. Zhang Guimei and the Wang couple are inspirational examples of how ordinary people devote themselves to worthwhile causes. In pairs, talk about what you can learn from their stories to make your own life meaningful. Use the example below to help you and pay attention to the expressions in bold. in·spir·ation·al  /ˌɪnspəˈreɪʃənl/ 启发灵感的,鼓舞人心的;给予启迪的 A: The people we’ve learnt about all seem to have a great sense of purpose in life. They followed their chosen paths no matter what difficulties they had. B: I was thinking the same thing. Wang Jicai and his wife started each day by raising the national flag. They were absolutely devoted to serving our country. It was what made their life meaningful. A: And they never gave up. Determination and perseverance are such helpful qualities to have if you want to find the true meaning of life. B: You’re right. I think it’s also essential to be highly motivated about something. Zhang Guimei has been driven by her desire to change the lives of the young girls living in the mountains. A: Yes. Just like the Wang couple, she has a clear mission. She knows what she wants to achieve no matter how much hard work it takes. I think this is something we should all remember when we consider what to do with our own lives. We need to find something we are passionate about and focus our energy on it. B: Exactly. Both the Wang couple and Zhang have devoted their lives to noble causes. In doing so, they have impacted the lives of many others. A: I can’t agree more. They put other people before themselves, which is a very noble way to live. I hope I will find a way for my life to be meaningful like that. B: Me too! $
