Dear Mr. Green,
I am writing to share my ideas on the logo design for our English literature reading room. Of all the three logos, I consider the most distinctive is Logo 2 “Read to Succeed”.
This design highlights the connection between reading and success. It combining the upward arrow with the trophy and graphs symbolizes progress, achievement, and personal growth through reading. Not only can this design send a powerful message that reading can help them achieve their goals, but also it is modern and inspiring, which I believe will encourage students to make the most of the reading room.
I would appreciate it if you could take my advice into consideration. Thank you and I eagerly await the final outcome.
Yours, Li Hua

Several minutes passed, but no help came. Despite my mounting fear, I gathered my composure and pressed the bell again, praying someone would come to our rescue. Unfortunately, after my several attempts there came nothing but dead silence. Just then, it was getting hot and stuffy. Mrs Lim was seized by a wave of panic attack, stumbling and mumbling. I gave her a gentle pat on the back and signaled her to lean against the corner. Bearing a last glimmer of hope, I started banging on the door and screamed my lungs out.
Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door. The knights in shining armor came to our rescue! The second they cracked open the door, I felt a massive weight off my shoulder. One of them bravely slid down to lend us a hand, while the rest were ready to pull us out with ropes. It didn’t take long before we were rescued out of the lift. Mrs Lim, tears all over her face, kept thanking me and the firefighters. Truth be told, I had never felt so alive! It dawned on me that I should never take my blessed uneventful life for granted, and I must cherish what I have with a grateful heart.

Growing up as a kid in the UK, I was fascinated by insects. Wanting to protect them, I started building houses for ants, using little pieces of wood and leaves. I then moved on to making little cups and saucers from silver foil (箔纸) for the magical creatures. When seeing my work, my mother told me that the smaller I made things, the bigger my name would become.
As the years went by, my designs became more complicated. Making sculptures isn’t actually enjoyable. I sometimes work for 16 hours a day without breaks, and it takes me up to three months to finish a sculpture. I have to hold my breath during the sculpting process.
One time, a fly landed on a Cinderella carriage sculpture I was working on. The fly’s wings blew it away, and it was lost. I was heartbroken. Another time, I accidentally breathed in a microscopic Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Alice is now in the Wonderland forever. But it did give me the chance to make an even better one the second time around.
My sculptures have taken me to incredible places. In 2012, I met the queen, giving her a crown on the head of a pin. In 2013, I received my first Guinness World Record for creating the smallest sculpture by hand, a 24-carat gold motorbike that fitted inside a hair. In 2017, I beat my record with a sculpture of a human fetus (胎儿) that measured 0.078 mm by 0.053 mm.
I was diagnosed with autism (自闭症) as an adult. In school, my teachers had pointed me out as an example of failure; now, I see my autism as a gift. It’s pushed me to be the best I can be. I hold workshops in schools for neurodiverse children, sharing my story and helping them create their own miniature figures.
The microscopic world has always been my happy place. I’ve tried to make bigger sculptures, but small is best for me. We need to appreciate the little things in life. Small things can also be mighty, too.
24.What drove the author to make tiny sculpture at the beginning?
A.His interest in insects. B.His desire to make a name.
C.His dream of setting a record. D.His awareness of wildlife protection.
25.Which of the following can best describe the author’s sculpting process?
A.Eventful and enjoyable. B.Complex and frustrating.
C.Money-wasting but entertaining. D.Time-consuming but fulfilling.
26.How does the author deal with his autism now?
A.He receives medical treatment. B.He takes full advantage of it.
C.He regards it as the source of failure. D.He shares it and asks help from others.
27.What message does the author mainly convey through the text?
A.Great art comes at a cost of loss.
B.Minor things in life can carry weight.
C.Childhood experiences sculpt a career.
D.Hard work contributes to great achievements.
C
Here’s a quick quiz. Person A does a favor for you. Person B asks you to do a favor for him. Who do you tend to like more? Surprisingly, the answer is Person B.This quirk (怪癖) of human nature is known as the Ben Franklin Effect.
Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the Pennsylvania Assembly. A powerful member didn’t care for Franklin and threatened to make life miserable for him. What to do? Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he could borrow a rare and valuable book the man owned. This request altered the man’s attitude and paved the way for their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that has once done you a kindness will be ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.”
Several studies have confirmed this. But how can we explain the Ben Franklin Effect? Some psychologists refer to cognitive dissonance (失调). It’s difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. It makes us uncomfortable. We resolve this tension by changing our mind. “I don’t like Joe, but I am doing him a favor,” we might think. “So maybe I do like him.”
While cognitive dissonance explains a lot, it alone doesn’t explain the Ben Franklin Effect. One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others. This explains a lot about altruistic behavior. We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. It’s in our genes.
Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures? Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable? Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another.
28.Why does the author mention Benjamin Franklin’s experience?
A.To illustrate a dilemma in making choices.
B.To suggest a way of striking up friendships.
C.To stress the importance of strategic requests.
D.To introduce the origin of the Ben Franklin Effect.
29.What is a reason for people’s tendency to like those asking for favors?
A.Reducing the tension caused by social contact.
B.Increasing the chance of getting help in return.
C.Avoiding the discomfort from conflicting thoughts.
D.Establishing a cooperative community of shared trust.
30.What does the underlined word “altruistic” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A.Selfless. B.Impolite. C.Aggressive. D.Responsible.
31.What does the author think of the Ben Franklin Effect?
A.It makes little sense. B.It applies to most cultures.
C.It has situational limitations. D.It has great practical significance.
D
At one time, our growing population was seen as central to wildlife extinction, resource exhaustion, pollution and environmental destruction. But today, our concerns shift to declining birth rates due to increased reproductive choice for women.
This is a positive development, but is often described as a “crisis” in the media, highlighting economic and senior care challenges. Lost in the conversation are the many positive aspects of an aging society, which is the result of people living healthier and longer lives, and common-sense realities like reduced needs for infrastructure (基础设施) and lower ecological impacts. Also lost is the fact that our population still grows by 80 million people every year.
And the consequences of high birth rates are severe. Among them is global warming. In fact, increased emissions (排放) from population growth have canceled more than three quarters of the emissions saved through energy efficiency and renewables over the past three decades.
Yet, no matter how well documented the link between population and climate, lowering our population is notably absent from the conversation on solutions. Instead, the focus is on technology that will supposedly allow our entire growing population to enjoy the energy-intensive lifestyles now enjoyed by the rich, and with no climate impacts.
But “green” technology is not the solution it is advertised to be. Its expansion to the degree needed to power a growing population at a decent standard of living would itself require a shocking investment in fossil (化石) fuels. It also requires massive mining operations, many of which take place on the backs of low-wage workers in Africa where it is driving destruction of rainforests critical to the survival of great apes. Besides, it requires 10 times the land area as fossil fuel plants for the same amount of energy generated.
When global warming threatens to push billions into unsafe temperatures, it is no time to panic that we are adding fewer to those billions. In fact, declining birth rates should be cause for celebration as they signify advances in gender equality and a reduced burden on Earth.
32.What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.The global population is decreasing every year.
B.The benefits of an aging society are overlooked.
C.The ecological environment is turning for the better.
D.The media make up misleading news about the population.
33.What is highlighted as a disadvantage of high birth rates?
A.Reduced infrastructure needs. B.Challenges in senior care services.
C.A slowdown in economic growth. D.Increased greenhouse gas emissions.
34.Why is “green” technology questioned in the text?
A.It does damage to the ecosystem. B.It is not popular around the world.
C.It is unaffordable for poor regions. D.It has little effect on reducing pollution.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Aging Societies: A Global Crisis B.The Mystery of “Green” Technology
C.The Trend of Population Growth D.Declining Birth Rates: A Hopeful Sign

Why are Police Officers Called Cops?
Police officers are often referred to as cops. 36 Some argue the term is shortened from “copper” and comes from copper badges (徽章) worn by a policeman. Others say that it stands for “Constabulary of Police”.
General agreement on the word origins of “cop”, however, suggests that the term is based more on the policeman’s job than on his clothing or job title. In Latin, the verb capere can be defined as “to capture.” In French, the verb is caper. “To cop” in English is to seize or to take. 37
Some also believe that the Dutch word kapen, which also loosely translates to “to steal or take”, is related to policemen being called coppers or cops. Essentially, the police force was there to take criminals off the streets. 38 And since American English especially draws from German, French, and Latin, the specific language origin of kapen or capere creates a ready path to the term “cop”.
39 And it is no longer considered rude. However, certain other terms for police officers are definitely unwelcome. While British Police might not mind being called “bobbies”, no police members like to be referred to as “pigs” or the “fuzz”. Some don’t mind the term the “heat” as applied to the whole police force, but the police force does not generally take kindly to terms given to them by criminals.
The term “cop” is in such common usage now that a show documenting their work on the job is called Cops. Even though J. Edgar Hoover once highly objected to the term, it is now fine to refer to a policeman or a police woman as a cop. 40
A.The term is slightly less familiar to people.
B.So, the Latin, Dutch, and French terms are all similar.
C.These words define some of what a police officer does.
D.The profession of a police officer was not respected then.
E.But the origins of this nickname are something of a debate.
F.However, the term “police officer” is generally most correct.
G.Today it is appropriate to call members of the police force cops.

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分40分)
The development of the movie industry in India is mostly conditional upon the actions of present-day companies. Therefore, the latter is concerned about increasing 56 (it) influence by entering into a new partnership with western film production companies. This practice 57 (prove) to be beneficial in terms of ensuring the growth of the industry so far, 58 (evidence) by the successful cooperation between DreamWorks and Reliance Entertainment in India.
The two companies have been partners for over the past seven years, and it is sufficient time to make 59 (conclusion) on the profitability and the overall feasibility (可行性) of such policies. This way, even the positive environment conditioned by the large market readily available is incapable of overcoming the new situation. Thus, the Indian movie industry’s further development solely depends on domestic companies’ 64 (capable) to cooperate with western filmmakers, 65 will facilitate the promotion of a product appealing to diverse audiences.

第二节(满分25分)
When we were finally dismissed from the last class of the day, the students streamed out of the classrooms. It was another boring day after school. I dragged my feet home as I sighed. Yet another uneventful day, I thought. Little did I know that the day would take a turn for the worse.
The lift lobby(电梯间) of my flat was old and dirty. The walls, which were painted white, had been dirtied over many years. I reached my flat’s lobby, and pressed the lift button and went in. Just then, Mrs. Lim, my elderly neighbour, hobbled (蹒跚) in. She looked ancient with tissue paper white hair, wearing a faded old-fashioned dress. I held the lift door open, flashing a friendly smile, and politely greeted her. I asked her how she felt that day and pressed the buttons. She thanked me for being so polite, then we were silent for the rest of the ride.
The lift fell down increasingly fast. There were loud clanking sounds here and there while the lift grew slower and slower. My heart beat hard and fast as my hands turned cold and wet with sweat. Unfortunately, the lift came to an abrupt stop at the fifth floor. I pressed the buttons hard several times, but it was of no help. The lights on the buttons had gone out. It soon dawned on me that we were trapped. An icy fear crept up my spine. Mrs. Lim was hysterical (歇斯底里的).
“We will never get out!” she cried with her face pale. It had become a colourless mask. I had no time to lose. I pressed the bell in the lift immediately. The sound was surely deafening, but what other choice did I have? Mrs. Lim burst into tears. I tried my very best to comfort her, telling her that everything would be all right and that we needed to find out how to get out safely. Mrs. Lim began having trouble breathing, and I immediately helped her sit down and loosened her collar.
