Hey, Captain Lim,
First of all, I would like to say that it is a great pleasure to be able to speak to an experienced pilot who knows what life is like in the sky.
I am a 13-year-old girl and for as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a pilot. I would spend hours watching the planes at the airport take off from the runway. I love the feeling of packing my bags, traveling to some places that I have never explored (探索) before.
I just love airplanes and flying. The idea to fly people around the world always makes me excited. I’m just not sure if it’s the right job for me. My dad says I need to make a quick decision because now is the right time to start training. It’s true. I want to start early. It sounds funny, but I want to be young and energetic when I’m flying a Qantas Boeing 737, or even an A380!
I have so many questions about it—do you get paid well? I want to have a pretty good income (收入). I want to have a big family and house when I grow up. And it will need a lot of money. Is it fun? Is it safer than being a doctor or a teacher? Will I regret it? I hate regretting things I’ve done. Is it really hard? I’m also a girl, so will I be looked down upon?
And I would also like to know, if I definitely (明确地) want to become a pilot, where and when I should start training if I want to start early.
Thanks so much, Captain!

Mary Anne

Once you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream come true? How can you make your dream real?

In fact, everyone can realize his dream. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is. Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want every day and then your dream will come true faster. You should know that a big dream is, in fact, made up of many small dreams.

Alyssa Carson is a teenager and she already has a big dream for her future. If her dream comes true, she’ll fly into space. But she doesn’t want to orbit(环绕……运行)the earth on the space station or go to the moon. Alyssa wants to travel to Mars, the red planet.
So, is this just a dream? No. Alyssa made the decision when she was three years old because the idea was exciting and “no one’s been there!” After that she read lots of books on Mars and attended her first space camp when she was seven. Since then, she’s learned a lot about travelling to other planets. It’s an expensive trip which requires many years of training. This is a problem for Alyssa’s family, but her parents try to support her because she has been trying her best to make her dream come true. Alyssa believes we are the Mars generation and that the mission(飞行任务) to Mars will help us get to know the planet better.
More than 100, 000 people have already applied(申请)for a journey to Mars. If they pass the tests, like Alyssa, they will start a training program. She has a certificate(证书)in scuba diving and is already working on her pilot’s license. Both these things, as well as a certificate in skydiving are important for an astronaut’s training. And it’s necessary to speak several languages if you want to be an astronaut. Alyssa speaks Spanish, French, Chinese and some Turkish, so this should be enough!
Only a few people can go on the first Mars mission. The flight to Mars won’t be easy. They will spend hundreds of days together in a very tight space! So, if you were an astronaut on Mars, what would life be like? You would live in an extremely small space called a “pod” and you would wear a space suit all the time. Alyssa speaks Spanish, French, Chinese and some Turkish, so this should be enough!(她有水肺潜水证书,并且正在攻读飞行员执照。 She is a very hard-working person. Because she read lots of books on Mars and can speak several languages.

I am Gina. My dream is to become an English teacher when I grow up. I am interested in English as I think it can open doors to different cultures and opportunities.
To achieve this dream, I have a clear plan. First, I am going to study hard so that I can get into a good university to learn English further. I’m sure the education I get there can improve my necessary skills. Meanwhile (与此同时), I’m working on my language skills by talking to friends from English-speaking countries. I will practise listening by watching English movies and TV shows, and I will write articles in English to improve my writing skills.
To be an excellent teacher, gaining rich experience is very important. To get more teaching experience, I am going to volunteer as a teacher at an after-school learning centre, helping students with their English homework. The hands-on experience can teach me how to communicate better with students of different ages and levels (水平).
I know that the road to becoming an excellent English teacher is long and difficult, but I’m going to work hard to make it come true. I look forward to the day when I can stand on the podium (讲台), share my passion (酷爱) for English, and guide my students towards a brighter future.
1.What is Gina interested in?
2.How is Gina going to improve her writing skills?
3.Where is Gina going to volunteer?
4.What does Gina think of the road to becoming an excellent English teacher?
5.What’s your dream and how do you plan to realize it?
Everybody dreams about the future. I’m excited about my future because I have big hopes and dreams.
Firstly, I think I am going to be a teacher after college. I will work hard and be useful to our society. For one thing, I like to be with middle school students so much. Most of the students at that age are full of energy and hope, and I am sure their passion (激情) will have a great influence on me. For another, teaching is now considered to be a hard job in China. However, if we don’t have enough teachers, our future will be short of excellent scientists, managers, businessmen, soldiers, good workers and farmers. How can our country be strong and wealthy if this happens?
Besides being a teacher, I also hope to be rich. I will make a lot of money by working hard. Then I will help people who are in need. I like travelling too, so I will go to Africa and Europe to experience different cultures and customs. I will meet many people and make many friends there.
All our dreams can come true if we try our best to realize them. I know it won’t be easy, but if I make it, I’ll be happy.

Regards,
Mary Anne

Everyone has a dream. What role does a dream play in our life?
When I was young, my dream was to be a fireman. I thought it would be cool to ride around. And putting out fire could make me feel like a superman.
For years, I held on to this dream. But when I got older, I had another dream. I wanted to be a teacher like my father. He teaches in a university. He has helped many students to achieve their dreams. I really admire him. So that’s why I am a teacher now. I enjoy every minute when I stay with students. I enjoy every moment when I see students make progress. I never regret giving up my dream to be a fireman.
Life doesn’t always give us the joys we want. Life may push our dreams in another direction.
It doesn’t matter whatever our dreams are. If we actively pursue (追求) them, we will move closer to our dreams. If we stick to what we live to do, we can build ourselves better. That is the most important thing to us.
1.What career made the writer feel like a superman?
2.Who influenced (影响) the writer to become a teacher now?
3.What will happen if we go after our dreams in an active way?
4.What’s your dream? How can you achieve it? (Write 30 words or more.)

Do you have a beautiful dream? What are you going to be when you grow up? I know almost everyone has their own dreams in their life. The dreams are very important for people because the dreams can make them work harder.

There are not enough teachers, so I want to be a teacher to help them. I will be kind to my students and make friends with them. I will give them love and teach them how to be a useful (有用的) person. What do you want to be when you grow up (长大)? Every child has an answer to this question. But it’s not an easy job to make their dreams come true.
When Zhao Li was young, she dreamed of becoming a reporter. “As a child, I thought it was interesting that there were people on TV,” she said. “They seemed important, and they told you what was going on. So I wanted a job on television some day.”
Zhao Li worked hard at school and got good grades. Although her parents wanted her to be a doctor, Zhao couldn’t give up (放弃) her dream. “That is what I want to do in my heart,” she said. “Why not go for it?” So she went to the university to learn broadcasting (广播). As young students, you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize; they can also be small, such as becoming one of the best students in your class.
Once you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream come true? How can you make your dream real?
Andrew Matthews, an Australian writer, tells us that making the dreams real is life’s biggest challenge (挑战). You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or that it’s impossible for you to become a winner. Those kinds of ideas stop you from realizing (实现) your dream.
In fact, everyone can realize his dream. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is. Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want every day and then your dream will come true faster. You should know that a big dream is, in fact, made up of many small dreams.
You must also never give up your dream. There will be difficulties on the road to your dreams, so it’s hard for you to make your dream come true. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what to do and what not to do.

Studying is important to students. But it is always difficult to find enough time to study every subject you need. So a good plan can help you make sure of your success in study.
Then, how to make a study plan? First, you should list all the subjects you need to study. Then make sure what you need to do for each subject. Next, you should decide how much time you should spend on different subjects. In this way, you have a plan you can remember easily. While planning time for each subject, you should make sure that you still have time for family, friends and rest. This is because you won’t be able to succeed in your studies unless you balance (平衡) your personal life and your study.
Follow your plan. One of the biggest challenges in following your study plan is that you will meet temptations (诱惑). Luckily, you can fight temptations by taking breaks. But be sure not to take extra breaks or too long breaks as it can affect your plan. Also, you need to use your break wisely, such as listening to music, eating a small snack and so on. To avoid forgetting to follow your plan, try to get into the habit of looking at your calendar every day. Sometimes our plans are hard to follow because some important people in our lives distract (使分心) us from our goals. In order to avoid this, tell people in your life about your plan. Put up a copy of your study guide at home so you and your family can see it, and e-mail a copy to your friends so they know when you have spare time.

The Future Is Far Away!
If you made a phone call home, it would take half an hour for the sound to reach the earth! Also, if you got ill, there wouldn’t be any hospitals. Life wouldn’t be as easy, that’s for sure! But it would be really exciting.
1.Where does Alyssa want to travel?
2.Why do Alyssa’s parents support her?
3.What are the important things for an astronaut’s training?
4.What do you think of Alyssa? Why do you think so? (List two reasons)
