Steven lost an arm after a traffic accident years ago. On that day, he was hit by a car. The bones in his left arm were smashed to pieces. “I can’t feel my hand!” Steven shouted when he woke up in the hospital. It was the only thing he could think of to say, although it did him no good at all. It was a very difficult time for him.
But life went on. Steven spent the next two years in the hospital. At first, he couldn’t even tie his shoes, open a bottle of water or cut his fingernails (手指甲) by himself. Later on, with the support of his wife, he realized that he had no choice but to face life head-on.
He started to take part in all kinds of activities. He even decided to learn to play the violin. Steven knew nothing about playing the violin and had no one to ask for help until he met Lam, an amateur (业余的) violinist.
Steven became Lam’s first student. He practiced playing the violin with Lam’s help. Sometimes he even played in public. When he played on the street, what people offered was not sympathy (同情), but admiration.
Steven said playing the violin hasn’t necessarily made life easier for him, and he still has to face new challenges every day. However, he won’t give up. And he said he would never stop trying new things.

What will you say if you need to tell someone about yourself? Seeing yourself from the outside can be hard. However, knowing who you are helps you understand your feelings and make friendships stronger.
Self-awareness (自我意识) means learning about your thoughts, feelings, and actions. It is a simple viewpoint. For example, you might know you love playing basketball because you’ re good at it. This is part of being self-aware.
Self-awareness is important. When you know what you like and dislike, you can make better choices. Believing in your feelings can build confidence further. Self-awareness is one of the ten important life skills for a happy and healthy life. Being self-aware isn’t just about thinking about yourself. Understanding your own feelings helps you understand others better, too.
A great way to learn about yourself is to ask questions. Use “What” instead of “Why”. If you keep arguing (争吵) with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you’ re arguing. Looking for the same points about your likes and dislikes helps you learn more about yourself.
Learning self-awareness is a skill, and that means you can learn it as you grow. Try new things, like doing a new sport or listening to different music. Don’t worry if you don’t like something. Finding out what’s hard or challenging is part of learning about yourself. Keep exploring, and you’ll understand yourself better day by day!
36. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By sharing an experience. B. By showing a fact.
C. By asking a question. D. By giving an example.
37. What does the underlined word “viewpoint” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Competition. B. Opinion. C. Decision. D. Survey.
38. Why is self-awareness important in paragraph 3?
A. It makes you pay attention to your choices B. It helps you show your feelings.
C. It encourages you to try new things. D. It helps you make good choices.
39. When you argue with a friend, which question should you ask according to the passage?
A. Why do you make me angry? B. Why are you so angry?
C. What do we disagree on? D. What’s wrong with you?
40. What can be the best title for this passage?
A. The Way of Building Confidence. B. Learn About Yourself.
C. Try New Sports and Music. D. The Importance of Friends.

Need a reason to be happy? Then you will be happy to know that March 20th is the International Day of Happiness.
The United Nations set up the International Day of Happiness in 2012 to remind us that happiness is a basic human goal (目标) and right (权利).
It was celebrated for the first time in 2013. On that day, we celebrated hundreds of “Happy Heroes”—those who did so much to bring happiness to others. They helped the homeless to live a comfortable life and the poor kids to go to school.
The 2014 Day of Happiness actions asked people to share pictures of what makes them happy. People all over the world showed their favorite pictures on the Internet. “It’s exciting to see so many people sharing photos of what makes them happy.” Joe, a senior high school student from Canada said. The 2015 Day of Happiness actions gave attention to relationships. Modern society is leaving more and more people feeling lonely. On that day, thousands of people all around the world reached out to make new connections with others. They visited their neighbors, gave calls to the doctors they didn’t know very well, drove the strangers to stations for free…

My name’s Leo. I always hoped to get Most Valuable (最有价值的) Player. Back in Grade 6, soccer was my favourite sport. I wasn’t the best player at first. But after a lot of hard work, I felt that I was the MVP.
As the soccer season went on, we finally got the second place. Our team was a very good team, and I was a big part of that because I was the player who scored the most points in the team. Kenny was the captain (队长) and would always pass the ball to all his players.
At the end of the year, there was a sports dinner at school. At the end of the dinner, the teacher stood up and told us the winners for the prizes, “The winner for the MVP is—Kenny.”
I was sad. It also surprised everyone on the team. They felt that I would get the MVP. After the event, the teacher came up to me and said, “You were the best player on the team, but you did not pass the ball. You have to know that soccer is about the team.” I was embarrassed (窘迫的) by what the teacher said.
But now I am in Grade 9, and I learned that a team sport is not just about you. It is about “us”. Now I am both a better player and a better captain.

A. By sharing an experience. B. By showing a fact.
