In February 1950, Hua Luogeng, a famous Chinese mathematician (数学家), wrote an open letter to all Chinese students studying in the US while he was returning to China. The letter moved many people and showed the strong patriotism (爱国精神) of many overseas (海外的) Chinese scientists who were willing to return to their homeland.
The documentary (纪录片) Return tells the story of many scientists who decided to go back to China in the 1950s. “It not only focuses on their historical backgrounds but also shows their feelings and a deep sense of patriotism,” said Li Zheng, the documentary’s director.
Return shares many little-known stories of these scientists. In Hua’s case, many people don’t know how important his work was in the early development of computer science in China. In March 1950, Hua left his job at Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study and returned to China. At a time when few people knew about computers, Hua already understood their influences on scientific progress. The next year, he became the director of the Institute of Mathematics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and set up China’s first computer research team. Li said Hua’s story moved him. “Hua was more than just a mathematician. He had big ideas and was very brave, especially for his time.”
Talking about the influence of Return on young people, Li said, “I hope teenagers will learn more about history from this documentary and be encouraged by the spirit of these scientists. Today’s young people live in a well-off society, but we must never forget the achievements of those who came before us.”
59.What did Hua’s open letter mainly show?
A.His maths achievements in the world.
B.His teaching methods in maths.

In a class, the teacher placed an empty jar (罐子) and some rocks on the table. “How many of these rocks do you think we can fit in the jar?” he asked.
We were puzzled (困惑的) , but we still made our guesses. Then the teacher began to put the rocks in one by one. When no more rocks could fit, he asked, “Is the jar full?” Everyone said, “Yes.”
The teacher then took out some sand and began to pour it into the jar, filling the spaces between the rocks. He asked again, “Is the jar full?” By this time, we guessed the answer from past experience. “Probably not,” we said.
“Good,” he said, pouring water into the jar until it was full.
“This jar is like your life. The rocks are the important things, like your health and family. The sand is your job, house, or car. The water is the unimportant things. If you fill the jar with sand or water first, there won’t be room for the rocks. The same goes for your life. Pay attention to important things first, or you’ll never have space for them,” the teacher added.
63.What did the teacher first place on the table?
A.A full jar and some sand. B.An empty jar and some rocks.
C.A glass and some water. D.A box and some stones.
64.How did the teacher fill the spaces between the rocks?

A.Honest. B.Kind. C.Wise. D.Strict.
D
Kids often feel pressure from homework, parents and teachers. But one of the biggest pressures is trying to fit in with friends, known as “peer (同龄人) pressure”. This happens when you do something because your friends do it, or they talk you into doing it.
Some teens feel they have to do these things for fear of feeling left out, but this can be risky. It can lead to trouble and bad habits, like smoking or drinking. Others may blame (归咎于) their actions for peer pressure sometimes and even use it as an excuse to do something wrong. To fit in, you might stop being yourself. In this way, you may forget who you really are. But remember, good friends like you for who you are. Stand up for what you believe in, and you’ll feel better about yourself, too.
However, peer pressure isn’t always bad. When friends encourage you to do good things, like trying your best in school or giving a helping hand, they help bring out the best in you. To make good use of peer pressure, you should know when to go along with others and when to stand your ground. Be brave enough to say no when you need to. If friends try to make you do something wrong, suggest something else or just walk away.
Be confident (自信的) in what you believe and hang out with friends who feel the same way. Talk to someone you trust if you’ re feeling stressed out. Don’t keep your feelings inside.
66.Why do some teenagers give in to peer pressure?
A.Because they want to make their parents proud.
B.Because they hope to become leaders in school.
C.Because they are afraid of feeling left out.
D.Because they enjoy trying some new activities.
67.What can we infer from the underlined words “good friends like you for who you are”?
A.Good friends only like popular people. B.Good friends accept you as you are.
C.Good friends help you avoid pressure. D.Good friends never say “no” to you.
68.What does the underlined phrase (短语) “stand your ground” mean in the text?
A.Refuse to change your opinion. B.Stand up to show you are strong.
C.Give some useful suggestions. D.Ask your parents to support you.
69.What should teens do when facing too much bad peer pressure?
A.Try to fit in with friends blindly. B.Ask for their peers’ advice.
C.End friendships with their peers. D.Say no and talk to someone they trust.
E
①The fridge is an important invention that helps us keep food fresh. But how was it invented?
②Long ago, people used different ways to store food. They kept food in cold water, underground rooms, or ice boxes. Ice boxes were wooden boxes with ice inside. However, ice melted (融化) quickly, and food still got bad easily.
③In the early 1800s, scientists discovered that some gas (气体) could take in heat and make the air cooler. This idea led to the first cooling machines. In 1834, an American inventor named Jacob Perkins built a machine that used gas to cool things. It was the first step towards the modern fridges. Later, in 1873, a German engineer named Carl von Linde created a better cooling system (系统) using a special gas. His invention made it easier to produce cold air. However, these early fridges were too big and expensive for most families.
④In the 1930s, companies started making smaller and safer fridges for homes. They used a chemical called Freon, which wasn’t bad for people. Then, many families could buy fridges, and they became popular.
⑤Over time, fridges improved. They became more environmentally friendly. Today, fridges come in many sizes and styles, helping people store food safely.
⑥Thanks to the hard work of scientists and inventors, we now have a convenient way to keep our food fresh.
70.What was the main problem with ice boxes in the past?
A.They were too small. B.The ice inside turned into water soon.
C.They were made of paper. D.People didn’t like their sizes and styles.
71.When did fridges go into many families?
A.In the early 1800s. B.In 1834.
C.In 1873. D.After the 1930s.
72.Which is the best structure (结构) of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
F
It is wise to relax ourselves through watching movies or playing games online when we feel bored and tired from our work. However, looking at screens at night can cause us to sleep poorly, according to a US study.
First, in the evening our bodies make melatonin (褪黑素). Melatonin makes us feel sleepy and relaxed. It’s an important part of our sleep cycle. Our electronic screens prevent that cycle from working in a normal way.
What’s more, blue light stops our bodies from making melatonin. And it is made by phones, computers and TVs. Even just a little bit of blue light can have bad effects on our sleep. Eight minutes of blue light can keep your brain “awake” for another hour, according to the study. Even if you fall asleep, you may have lots of dreams. Your brain won’t have a good rest.
Finally, it’s even worse if you play an exciting game before bed. Games make our hearts beat faster, so we have difficulty falling asleep. Then, when we fall asleep, we don’t get enough “deep sleep”. And it will lead to feelings of tiredness the next day.
73.What is the problem of looking at screens at night? (不超过15个词)
74.Where does blue light come from in the writer’s opinion? (不超过10个词)

(不超过10个词)
