I always think of my experience as a volunteer (志愿者) teacher in Guilin, Guangxi. It was so special and meaningful that I will never forget it.
Last winter, my friends and I took a plane to Guilin. When we arrived, two local teachers took us to a hotel. We began preparing lessons for our students that night. The next day, we took the first bus to Hope School in a small village. Most of the students there were left-behind children. This means they remain at home under the care of their grandparents. Their parents work in other cities and only come back home during the Spring Festival.
Our volunteer group was asked to teach 3rd and 4th graders. I taught the students English in different ways, such as playing word games and singing English songs. After class, they often interacted with me. They shared their hobbies, told me their dreams and introduced their special festivals to me. I told them about myself and Western culture.
The more I taught, the more I realized I was not just giving the students lessons. I was also teaching them good values (价值观). Those little moments—like when I encouraged them to help a classmate or to stick with their dreams—slowly influenced how they treated others and faced difficulties. Though the experience has come to an end, I can still see the lovely kids in my dreams sometimes. I believe they will grow up to be the best that they can be.

In China, the Lei Feng story is well known. His spirit has been passed down by many people with cultural differences.
Lugazo is a 24-year-old African boy. In 2017, he came to China to study. After arriving at the railway station in Wuhan, he was helpless because he had no idea which way to go, and he couldn’t speak any Chinese. A passenger sitting next to him on the train volunteered to take him to the university. The kind man was the first “Lei Feng” he met.
The experience encouraged Lugazo a lot. Several months later, he joined the university’s Volunteer Team and was given a red jacket with Lei Feng’s photo on it. The next year, he did voluntary work at the Wuhan Railway Station. “Once, after I helped an old woman, her 5-year-old grandson came up to me and said ‘Thank you, Lei Feng!’. That really touched me,” he said.
Another of his favorite memories was teaching English to children in a school in Hubei. Many of their parents worked in other cities, so the children lived with their grandparents. The children were quiet and seldom expressed themselves. Lugazo remembers a 10-year-old boy who was always alone in one corner. “I took him to the teachers’ office. We played games and became friends.” At first, the boy hardly took part in games during class, but after a week, he was taking part just like the others. The change made Lugazo happy.

I joined a club called “Passing Help” last month. As for why I joined this club, there is a touching story behind it.
One evening this May, I went to the countryside on business. My old car broke down suddenly on my way home. It was 25 miles away from my house. I wanted to get a ride, but there was no car passing by. It was also hard to take a taxi in such a lonely place. So I decided to take a bus home. I walked forward and soon found a bus stop nearby.
After a while, a bus came, but it did not go to my town. The bus driver was a young woman. She told me which bus I should take. I waited there for about thirty minutes. During that time, a truck passed by, but there was no space for me to take a ride. Just then a car came to me and a woman came out of the car. She was just the bus driver. “When I reached the bus station, I found that the bus to your town couldn’t come, so I returned here to pick you up. I just can’t leave you here,” she said, “Get in my car and I will take you back to your home.”
“It is a long way,” I said.
“Come on, sir,” she said. “Let’s go.”
On the way she told me a story, which happened a few years ago. Her car ran out of gas halfway home. As she was wondering what to do, an old man driving by offered to drive her up to a gas station and then back to her car. The old man told her that he was a member of Passing Help and asked her to join it too.
When we got to my home, it was already very late. I wanted to give her some money as a thank-you, but she didn’t accept it. “As a club member, I’m just trying to help those in need and do something nice for somebody else. Pass it along!” she said.
