Use Your Diaphragm (横膈膜) Your diaphragm is the muscle that controls breathing, and because it is located right above your stomach, you can strengthen them together. Lie on your back with your knees bent, keeping one hand on your stomach and the other on your chest. Breathe in deeply, slowly pulling the air into your lungs. Breathe out through your mouth. Try to wait seven seconds before taking in air again. Imagine You Are Rowing a Boat This exercise strengthens the upper back muscles and opens your chest cavity (腔), allowing for full lung ability. Sit on the floor with your legs in front of you and knees slightly bent. Put a resistance band around the bottoms of your feet and hold it in front of you in an X shape. Holding an end in each hand, spread your arms, then pull backward until your hands meet your chest. Repeat at least six times three days a week. Walk for 20 Minutes Walking doesn’t just get your heart pumping or work your leg muscles—it also builds up the area around your lungs to help them function better. To get the most out of your walk, stand straight, with your head up and your shoulders back, and keep a heel-to-toe pace, allowing your lungs to fully expand. Combine walking with deep breathing to increase your air intake. Work up to walking three or four days a week. No matter which exercise you pick up, keep this in mind: Chances are that it will take you several months to see the outcome. So keep it up! 21.What should you obey if you are strengthening your diaphragm? A.You should lie on your stomach with your knees bent. B.You should hold your breath before breathing in again. C.You should do it seven times a week to get a best result. D.You should do it by breathing in merely with your mouth. 22.How can you take in more air? A.By keeping on rowing a boat regularly. B.By opening your chest cavity more often. C.By integrating walking with deep breathing. D.By allowing your lungs to expand to the fullest. 23.What do the three exercises have in common? A.They all need some extra assistance. B.They all involve using your both feet. C.They all require you to stand straight. D.They all call for constantly practicing. B A school’s “peace room” aims to end fighting in the halls.By the time Marquita Riley, 16, and Aaliyah Hudson, 17, ended up in their school’s “peace room,” rumors(传闻) had floated through the halls that the two girls were going to fight. The peace room at Manley is a part of the school’s restorative justice initiative, a growing social movement that, among other things, focuses on healing and teaching how to solve conflicts. The philosophy aims to bring together victims and offenders to cooperatively work through their problems. The concept is increasingly being used in schools, community centers and churches in Chicago as a way to teach young people how to analyze their anger. They learn to confront tension before it turns violent. It is also being used as an alternative to punitive(处罚的)measures, like suspensions and arrests, which can lead to more trouble for hurting communities. The idea is that “when harm happens or someone misbehaves, there needs to be a process of restoration in order for the community to move forward,” said Ilana Zafran of Umoja Student Development. Umoja runs restorative justice programs in Chicago schools. The concept forces all sides in a disagreement to communicate and understand one another instead of resorting to violence. There may still be punishment for wrongdoing, but restorative justice emphasizes identifying hurt and thinking of ways to fix it. “A lot of our kids don’t want to be involved in fights. They don’t want to be suspended or away from school,” Jackson said. “We had to create an environment of peace. High school has to be a pleasurable experience for our kids. If they come here and feel the same anxiety they feel in the streets, how can we expect them to stay?” Among the people there were Marquita and Aaliyah, the two girls rumored to be gearing up for a major fight. After another 20 minutes of discussion, they agreed they had simply misunderstood each other. The girls decided they would not fight, and promised they would talk it over if they found themselves facing tension again. 24.What is Manloy’s peace room aimed at? A.Preventing rumors from spreading. B.Developing students’ team spirit. C.Helping students restore relations. D.Warning students to behave well. 25.What may result from lack of restorative justice in communities? A.Alternatives to punishment. B.Violent tension. C.Processes of restoration. D.Controlled anger. 26.Which can replace the underlined phrase in Paragraph 5? A.Falling back on. B.Putting up with. C.Looking back to. D.Making up for. 27.Why does the author give an example of Marquita and Aaliyah? A.To prove effectiveness of peace room. B.To show the harm of campus violence. C.To explain the reason for suspension. D.To introduce kids’ school experiences. C While some critics claim that history curricula (课程) teach unnecessary content, others argue that these curricula need to be more comprehensive. Despite ongoing debates about content, one universal truth remains: strong history curricula are necessary for developing the productive citizens of tomorrow. The greatest academic value that history curricula provide is not the recall of important dates and names. Rather, understanding the historical inquiry process is the most important component. This process teaches students how to become critical thinkers and understand the dynamic nature of the telling of history. Through strong history curricula, students are shown both a variety of primary and secondary sources and are taught to critique them. This is where the historical inquiry process begins. Students not only begin to analyze and ask questions about the content, but they also learn about the author’s credibility and potential bias (偏见). Students are then able to contextualize the information they learn and can think more critically about historical con text and those who tell it. With this framework, students can then understand the causal relationship between human nature, values, philosophy, actions, and their consequences. It teaches students to recognize recurrent themes and lessons that are necessary to understand modern society. Most importantly, it teaches students to develop a healthy skepticism (怀疑论) when presented with information today because our actions are history in the making. Forty years ago, renowned scholar James Fitzgerald argued that no education is complete without the teaching of historical inquiry. He believed that the only way to move forward in life is to understand what’s behind us. Today, this principle still holds true. Students take both the factual knowledge and the historical inquiry skills they learn in the classroom and apply them to real world circumstances. Throughout their lives, students who are taught with strong history curricula will take the lessons they learn from our predecessors and become involved, active, productive citizens who want to create a history that tomorrow’s students will be proud to learn about. 28.What is the biggest academic significance of history learning? A.Passing down Chinese culture. B.Grasping historical inquiry skills. C.Making people more knowledgeable. D.Enriching people’s everyday life. 29.What does the underlined word “critique”  in paragraph 3 probably mean? A.Protect. B.Combine. C.Comment. D.Remember. 30.Why is James Fitzgerald mentioned in the passage? A.To stress the importance of history. B.To point out the essence of education. C.To indicate famous people learn from history. D.To show history contributes to people’s achievements. 31.What can be the best title for the passage? A.It Is the People that Create History B.History Pushes the Wheel of the Times C.History Curricula Are Gaining More Attention D.History Curricula Shape Tomorrow’s Decision Makers D Motorcyclists seeking to solidify their reputation as risk-takers could do worse than (不妨做某事) book a session on a Wall of Death. These are small circular velodromes (圆形赛车场) where the track almost stands at an angle of 90° to Earth’s surface. What drives these brave souls up the wall is their speed. At around 50 kph, the forces acting on them are strong enough to counterbalance gravity’s pull, and keep them pushed outward. Now a group of scientists have tracked down one more need for such equipment. In a paper in Royal Society Open Science, they propose that astronauts living on NASA’s planned lunar base could run on the track to prevent their bodies from wasting away (变得消瘦、 衰弱) under the Moon’s reduced gravitational pull. In low-gravity environments, muscle decreases in strength, bone becomes easily broken and fitness and motor abilities decline. Even exercise, made less effective by weightlessness, struggles to counteract such effects. Alberto Minetti from the University of Milan wondered if running in a Wall of Death might provide a workout capable of limiting the body’s decline. To test it he rented a 10-metre-wide Wall of Death and called in two brave volunteers. His team tied the volunteers, a man and a woman, to ropes hanging from a crane (起重机) above the track. The ropes relieved the volunteers of five-sixths of their body weight, in effect mirroring the Moon’s gravity. After some practice rounds, the volunteers could run parallel to (与……平行) the ground at speeds averaging around 20 kph, without assistance. Dr Minetti says such motion can generate a force on the body similar to the effect of gravity on Earth. According to his calculations, running this way may be enough to battle the negative effects of lunar life. NASA may not even need to find extra room: he suggests that if the lunar shelters for the Artemis Base Camp were built in a circular design, astronauts could simply go for a jog around the inside walls. In principle it is “not a completely crazy idea,” says Kevin Fong, a doctor and specialist in space medicine at University College London. But, he adds, the limited medical care available in space means he would be nervous about astronauts running at speed. 32.Why is a Wall of Death mentioned in paragraph 1? A.To highlight its great forces. B.To stress its tough challenge. C.To imply its another good use. D.To show its global popularity. 33.What was the purpose of Dr Minetti’s experiment? A.To explore exercises for astronauts in space. B.To find approaches to cycling in a Wall of Death. C.To assess the benefits of workouts on the Moon. D.To measure the impact of gravity on human health. 34.What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A.The method used to create lunar gravity. B.The process for selecting brave volunteers. C.The speed required for the body’s movement. D.The cooperation needed in low-gravity conditions. 35.What is Fong’s attitude towards Dr Minett’s suggestion? A.He is optimistic about it. B.He does not care about it. C.He is strongly opposed to it. D.He does not fully support it. More than the challenge of fitting into a new culture, there are many benefits that a student can get from an exchange program. These benefits include: ·Diverse academic opportunities. In fact, students want to study abroad rather than travel. 36 Instead, it will be the supply of diverse opportunities for the student. For example, the student will be able to experience the differences of teaching methods, educational formats and academic program offerings. · 37 Studying in another country opens the student’s eyes to different surroundings, which makes the student know about the country’s customs, people and regions. Knowing other culture also teaches the student how to be open-minded. ·Personality development. 38 Thus, the student needs to make decisions on his or her own and suffer the consequences or enjoy the fruits of those decisions. With this, the student is taught how real life is, what it means to be responsible, and how being resourceful can help in his or her survival. It’s no wonder that most students who return after the exchange program are seen with significant improvement on their personal development. 39 So, why not let your child have the benefits of a student exchange program? Exchange programs or study-abroad programs are a great investment for the student. 40 Just imagine, by transforming students in a foreign country, the society is starting to build new blood of more mature people who might just be able to create a better tomorrow for the generations to come. A.Improved protection of social rights. B.Better awareness of cultural differences. C.More importantly, it is helpful for the improvement of the society. D.Most of them are more confident and have better decision-making skills. E.The hosting school can also benefit by making a student’s dream come true. F.Although students really love traveling, studying is not an activity filled with travel fun at all times. G.Being an exchange student often means living far away from home and parental guidance. Heimaey is a small island off the southern coast of Iceland. His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed. The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile.” I guess this is it, “he said.” I'll see you back home in a month, okay?"His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy's mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.” The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn't seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn't. They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn't her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. "What should we do to cheer Poppy up?"asked Dad. “We've tried everything.” “I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy, “smiled Mom.” Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let's get a little dog for Poppy." It didn't take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. Students not only begin to analyze and ask questions about the content, but they also learn about the author's credibility and potential bias (偏见). Students are then able to contextualize the information they learn and can think more critically about historical con text and those who tell it.(这就是历史调查过程开始的地方。 根据倒数第二段“Forty years ago, renowned scholar James Fitzgerald argued that no education is complete without the teaching of historical inquiry. He believed that the only way to move forward in life is to understand what's behind us.(40年前,著名学者詹姆斯·菲茨杰拉德认为,没有历史探究的教育是不完整的。 故选A。 31. 根据第一段中的“Despite ongoing debates about content, one universal truth remains: strong history curricula are necessary for developing the productive citizens of tomorrow.(尽管关于内容的争论仍在继续,但一个普遍的真理仍然存在:强有力的历史课程对于培养未来有生产力的公民是必要的)”及下文论述可知。 D 32.C 33.A 34.A 35.D 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第一段的句子“Motorcyclists seeking to solidify their reputation as risk-takers could do worse than (不妨做某事) book a session on a Wall of Death. These are small circular velodromes (圆形赛车场) where the track almost stands at an angle of 90° to Earth’s surface. What drives these brave souls up the wall is their speed. At around 50 kph, the forces acting on them are strong enough to counterbalance gravity’s pull, and keep them pushed outward.(摩托车手想要巩固他们作为冒险者的名声,不妨在“死亡之墙”上预定一场比赛。 在大约50公里每小时的速度下,作用在它们身上的力足以抵消重力的拉力,并保持它们向外伸展)”和第二段“Now a group of scientists have tracked down one more need for such equipment. In a paper in Royal Society Open Science, they propose that astronauts living on NASA’ s planned lunar base could run on the track to prevent their bodies from wasting away (变得消瘦、 衰弱) under the Moon’s reduced gravitational pull.(现在,一组科学家已经找到了对这种设备的另一种需求。 根据第三段的句子“In low-gravity environments, muscle decreases in strength, bone becomes easily broken and fitness and motor abilities decline. Even exercise, made less effective by weightlessness, struggles to counteract such effects. Alberto Minetti from the University of Milan wondered if running in a Wall of Death might provide a workout capable of limiting the body’s decline. To test it he rented a 10-metre-wide Wall of Death and called in two brave volunteers.(在低重力环境下,肌肉力量下降,骨骼容易骨折,健康和运动能力下降。 故选A项。 34. 根据第四段的内容“His team tied the volunteers, a man and a woman, to ropes hanging from a crane (起重机) above the track. The ropes relieved the volunteers of five-sixths of their body weight, in effect mirroring the Moon’s gravity. After some practice rounds, the volunteers could run parallel to(与……平行) the ground at speeds averaging around 20 kph, without assistance.(他的团队把志愿者(一男一女)绑在铁轨上方吊车上悬挂的绳子上。 故选A项。 35. 根据最后一段的句子“In principle it is “not a completely crazy idea,” says Kevin Fong, a doctor and specialist in space medicine at University College London. But, he adds, the limited medical care available in space means he would be nervous about astronauts running at speed.(原则上,这“并不是一个完全疯狂的想法,”伦敦大学学院的太空医学博士和专家Kevin Fong说。 36.根据空格前一句“In fact, students want to study abroad rather than travel.”(事实上,学生们更想出国留学而不是旅游。)可知,事实上学生是想要出国留学而不是旅行;根据空格后一句“Instead, it will be the supply of diverse opportunities for the student.”(相反,它将为学生提供各种各样的机会。) 37.空格处是本段的主旨句,根据空格后一句“Studying in another country opens the student’s eyes to different surroundings, which makes the student know about the country’s customs, people and regions.”(在另一个国家学习打开学生的眼睛到不同的环境,这使学生了解这个国家的习俗,人民和地区。) 38.根据空格后一句“Thus, the student needs to make decisions on his or her own and suffer the consequences or enjoy the fruits of those decisions.”(因此,学生需要自己做决定,并承担后果或享受这些决定的成果。) 39.根据空格前一句“It’s no wonder that most students who return after the exchange program are seen with significant improvement on their personal development.”(毫无疑问,大多数在交换项目结束后回国的学生在个人发展方面都有了显著的进步。) 40.根据空格后一句“Just imagine, by transforming students in a foreign country, the society is starting to build new blood of more mature people who might just be able to create a better tomorrow for the generations to come.”(想象一下,通过在国外改造学生,社会开始为更成熟的人提供新鲜血液,这些人可能会为后代创造更美好的明天。) 第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 41.B 42.C 43.C 44.B 45.A 46.D 47.C 48.B 49.D 50.A 51.B 52.A 53.B 54.C 55.D 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。 A. has拥有;B. lives居住,生活;C. stands站立;D. contains包含。根据前文“on its neighbouring islands”和后文“the world’s largest puffin colony”可知,岛屿上,生活着海鹦群。故选B项。 42. A. search搜查;B. continue继续;C. make制造,前进,择定;D. follow跟随。根据后文“their way to the ocean”可知,海鹦宝宝会冲向海洋,make one’s way to“开辟道路去某地”是固定短语。故选C项。 43. A. life生活;B. journey旅程;C. trouble麻烦;D. luck运气。根据后文“But they are 5 by bright lights. His parents laughed at the look of shock on his face. “That’s Pee-wee,” said Dad. “I can’t believe you got yourselves a puppy!” “We didn’t,” replied Mom. “This puppy is for Poppy!” 如:a mass of,with joy, look forward to等高级词汇;非谓语动词的运用The little pup was not shy and immediately starting yipping and jumping around the older dog.;时间状语从句When he bent down to give her a big hug, he fell over in surprise as a small golden cloud came racing up to lick his face too.
