The Silent Language of Paper
Li Wei planned to hang out with friends during the summer vacation. However, his parents told him to spend every afternoon with his grandmother learning paper-cutting. This made him upset.
“It’s an old-fashioned craft (手工艺). What’s the point?” he said angrily. But his father insisted, “Grandmother’s skills are a treasure. This is important.”
The first few days were really frustrating (令人沮丧的). No matter how hard Li Wei tried, he couldn’t control his fingers properly. His cuts were messy, nothing like grandmother’s, which were always sharp and formed beautiful designs of flowers and animals. He found it a boring task.
One afternoon, grandmother didn’t bring any pattern (图案). Instead, she placed a blank red paper in front of him. “Today,” she said softly, “cut out what is in your heart.” Li Wei was confused. He thought for a moment, then decided to cut out a simple basketball—the symbol of his favourite sport. To his surprise, grandmother smiled warmly. “Good! You see, paper-cutting is not just about copying old patterns. It’s a language. Our ancestors (祖先) used it to tell their stories. Now, you are telling yours.”
Li Wei felt a sudden excitement. It wasn’t about being perfect at an old art; it was about adding his own voice to it. He practiced with new interest. He started creating designs that mixed traditional symbols with things from his own life—a panda with a basketball and the school building next to a lucky character “Fu”.
When his class had an international culture fair, Li Wei didn’t just display grandmother’s perfect traditional cuts. He proudly showed his own modern creations. He explained to his curious classmates, and even to the visiting exchange students, how this art was evolving (演变). He was no longer just a learner; he felt like a keeper of the tradition.
Li Wei finally understood his father’s words. The real treasure wasn’t just the paper-cuts themselves, but the silent language they carried—a language that he could now speak, and more importantly, one he could help write for the future.
24. How did Li Wei feel about learning paper-cutting at first?
A. Surprised. B. Proud. C. Curious. D. Upset.
25. What made Li Wei practice paper-cutting with new interest?
A. Watching grandmother make paper-cuts.
B. Attending the international culture fair.
C. Creating designs to express himself.
D. Copying the old perfect patterns.
26. What did Li Wei finally realize?
A. Traditional art stays alive with new ideas.
B. Traditional art should remain unchanged.
C. Learning traditional art skills is very hard.
D. Paper-cutting is a symbol of traditional art.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly common in our lives. It can identify (辨认) faces in photos, translate languages, and even help doctors with treatment. However, researchers have found that AI sometimes learns in a surprising and problematic way: by taking shortcuts.
Instead of truly understanding a task, AI finds a simple, yet often misleading pattern (模式) in the data it was trained on. Take one experiment as an example, researchers trained an AI to identify pictures of animals. They showed it many pictures of horses on grass and camels on sand. The AI learned to tell them apart with high accuracy (准确率). But it wasn’t really looking at the animals, it had learned the shortcut. “If the background is grass, it’s a horse. If it’s sand, it’s a camel.” When the researchers then showed it a horse on sand or a camel on grass, the AI failed completely. It had relied (依靠) on the background, not the animal itself.
Real-world examples suggest that AI may rely on the wrong information that is not truly important. In one hospital, an AI identified pneumonia (肺炎) by the type of X-ray machine rather than by actual lung images, which could lead to serious mistakes in other hospitals. Similar problems also happen in education, where AI learning tools might judge students based on their answering habits instead of their actual understanding, making learning less effective.
Why does AI take shortcuts? Most AI today learns from large amounts of examples, a process called machine learning. Its goal is to find any pattern that leads to the correct answer in its training data. Simple, surface-level patterns are often the easiest to identify, even if they don’t reflect (反映) the real reason behind the answer.
Researchers are looking for solutions. For instance, AI can be trained with more varied data so that it learns in various situations, rather than relying on a single “shortcut”. However, completely preventing AI from taking shortcuts remains a challenge.
Understanding that AI can take shortcuts is an important step. It reminds us that although AI is powerful, it does not think like humans. In the face of rapidly developing AI technology, while we benefit from its convenience, we should also view its limitations rationally (理性地).
27. According to the passage, what is a “shortcut” for AI?
A. A difficult task of collecting data.
B. A useful model of identifying pictures.
C. A good way that helps with understanding.
D. A simple pattern that may lead to mistakes.
28. What does Paragraph 3 mainly say about AI’s shortcuts?
A. Their possible risks. B. Their common process.
C. Their daily applications. D. Their great performance.
29. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To stress the importance of using AI.
B. To remind people to use AI more carefully.
C. To explain the reasons for AI taking shortcuts.
D. To suggest solutions to stop AI taking shortcuts.
D
Do you consider yourself a “math person”? Many students quickly say no. Research shows that feelings about math are shaped more by experiences and emotions than by natural ability.
Some students feel stressed or worried when doing everyday math-related tasks, such as planning how to use pocket money or adding up scores during games. These feelings are signs of math anxiety, which affects about 30% to 60% of students. Math anxiety often lowers school performance and makes it harder to develop useful skills or enter fields like science and technology.
Why does math anxiety have such an influence? One key reason is that math anxiety often triggers avoidance, a common behavior in anxiety disorders. For example, students may put off homework, skip classes, or choose courses with less math required. Avoidance brings comfort for a moment, but it makes learning harder and strengthens negative (消极的) beliefs. Consider students who once enjoyed math but start getting low grades: anxiety increases, engagement (参与度) drops, performance worsens, and the belief that they are “not a math person” grows—creating a cycle of struggle and avoidance.
Recognizing (识别) and addressing avoidance early can help prevent longer-term difficulties in school and future work. Present approaches (方法) for reducing math anxiety, however, have only limited effects. A promising approach to this problem is to use ideas from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT,认知行为疗法), which teaches people to notice negative thoughts that cause anxiety and gradually face difficult situations. Unlike approaches that focus only on thoughts and emotions, CBT that stresses actions can more directly reduce avoidance, a key part in the cycle of anxiety and low performance.
Based on these ideas from CBT, students can also use simple strategies (策略) to build confidence. One is to practice math in low-pressure settings where they can work at their own pace (节奏) without worrying about grades or deadlines. Starting with small steps—like reviewing basic ideas or solving easy puzzles—can make math feel easier to manage. Short, regular practice each day can help make math a daily habit and gradually reduce stress. Another strategy is to use math in everyday situations. Activities like adding up costs for a project let students use math in familiar ways. With repeated practice in real situations, fear decreases, and students feel more in control and less likely to avoid math.
Math anxiety is not something to be afraid of, and it can be reduced through practice and effort. Facing avoidance and reshaping your approach can make tasks manageable, gradually turning math from fear into confidence.
30. Why does the writer mention the two examples in Paragraph 2?
A. To share some fun math activities.
B. To introduce some useful math skills.
C. To show daily tasks can lead to math anxiety.
D. To discuss what the nature of math anxiety is.
31. What does the word “triggers” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Limits. B. Reduces. C. Causes. D. Overcomes.
32. According to the passage, what is helpful for building confidence in math?
A. Adding up daily expenses.
B. Taking part in math competitions.
C. Paying close attention to math scores.
D. Doing difficult math problems each day.
33. Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A. Present strategies work well with math anxiety.
B. Taking practical actions helps reduce math anxiety.
C. Avoiding math decreases math anxiety in the long run.
D. Natural ability is key to breaking the math anxiety cycle.

四、阅读表达(第34-36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)

While many families across China reunited to celebrate the Spring Festival, Zhao Deling and Sheng Mingfen stayed on duty at the Xiannyu Cave management station of the Dashahe Nature Reserve (大沙河自然保护区) in Guizhou province. The hard-working couple, both forest guards, are responsible for nearly 467 hectares of protected areas, ensuring the safety of wild animals and plants.
The Dashahe Nature Reserve was set up in 1984 and became a national-level nature reserve in May 2018. Covering an area of 26,990 hectares, it is home to endangered species (物种) such as the Tonkin langur.
Zhao has served as a forest guard in the reserve for many years. His wife, Sheng, joined the team in 2020. Every day, they start work early in the morning. One guards an important checkpoint to keep out anyone who’s not allowed in, while the other patrols (巡逻) the forest. Their tasks include recording wildlife activities and clearing overgrown plants around signs and infrared cameras used for monitoring and protection.
“From early morning to midnight, there’s little time to rest,” said Zhao. “Most visitors leave when they are told the area is protected, but some visitors ignore (忽视) the rules, so the patrols must continue.”
A full round-trip patrol usually takes more than three hours. Loneliness is another big challenge, as the main part of the protected area is far from other people. While on patrol, the couple face non-stop uncertainty—never knowing what wild animals might endanger their lives.
Even though the hours are long and the work is lonely, the couple find meaning in their day-to-day duties. “Watching the changes along our way makes time pass easily. You can notice many small changes day by day,” Zhao said.
Having known each other since their early teens, Zhao and Sheng have set up a family and raised two children. During the Spring Festival, their daughters visited them for a family get-together.
“Maybe the station is not as comfortable as the house in the village, but once our family is together, happiness fills every corner of the checkpoint,” Sheng said.

A Watching grandmother make paper-cuts.

【答案】27. D 28. A 29. B

Do you consider yourself a “math person”? Many students quickly say no Research shows that feelings about math are shaped more by experiences and emotions than by natural ability.

Good morning, everyone! I’m Li Hua. Today, I did a survey on waste problems in our community. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文:
Good morning, everyone! I’m Li Hua. I did a survey on waste problems in our community. The results show four main types of waste. The most serious one is water and electricity waste—it takes up 45%. Next, 25% of the waste comes from the overuse of disposable products. Then, 20% is food waste, and 10% is other waste. These numbers tell us that our everyday habits and actions are harming our planet, but we can make a change!
Here is my advice. To save electricity and water, remember to turn off the lights when you leave a room and take quick showers instead of taking a bath. Second, we should say no to plastic bags and single-use products—we can use cloth bags for shopping and carry reusable water bottles. Third, to reduce food waste, we should order proper amounts of food and eat up what we buy. A green home starts with you and me. Let’s begin today and build it together.
