Arts Fest 2026 T-Shirt Design Contest
Harvard’s Arts Fest is an annual celebration of student creativity. For the 2026 festival, the organizing team invites undergraduate students to submit artwork for the official festival T-shirt. This T-shirt is worn by artists, staff, and volunteers, and seen by an audience of over 7,000. The winning design will capture the joyful and inclusive spirit of the festival.
We seek designs that are monochromatic (using only one color), which ensures the design works well for screen printing. Your design must include the phrase “make art”, the official and beloved festival tagline for over ten years. Do not include any university logos or branding. All submissions must be original student-created work; AI-generated designs are not accepted.

Seventy-four-year-old Lee Cooper’s favorite thing to do is shop — at least while volunteering at Portland-based Maine Needs. Upon arrival, he picks up an order and a bag to fill with requested items for people in need, such as a sixty-two-year-old man recently housed after two years of homelessness.
Maine Needs operates like a food bank but without food, collecting and handing out donated clothing, bedding, and cleaning supplies across Maine. Founded as a Facebook group in a garage in 2019, it now runs from a large facility with over thirty-five hundred volunteers, mostly serving southern areas.
Cooper carefully selects items, starting with shoes, which are heavy and go at the bottom. He picks out a pair of winter boots from L.L. Bean, checking the size matches the request. He then adds underwear, socks, pants, shirts, and personal care items like toothpaste and toothbrushes before moving to another room for cleaning supplies.
He never meets the people requesting items in person, but feels deeply connected, recalling a special order for a woman just moving into a recovery center. Understanding early hardships from his own thirteen years of recovery from lung cancer, he included a fancy soap and a hairbrush — items not typically requested — plus a deck of cards and a personal note wishing her good luck.
Cooper has long volunteered for conservation groups and Habitat for Humanity. He began supporting Maine Needs financially, then started volunteering twice weekly last November, often bringing donations that disappear quickly. He notes the community responds actively to social media requests for specific items like fans, with packages arriving rapidly from multiple donors.
Jo Albanese, who oversees volunteers, says, “Cooper helps with everything from filling orders to painting. I’m impressed by his easygoing and helpful nature.” This year they have filled over ninety-five hundred orders thanks to dedicated volunteers. Reflecting, Cooper says he was not always kind and somewhat self-serving before, but volunteering grounds him by revealing the vast needs of others.
4. What is the essential function of Maine Needs?
A. To operate as a traditional food bank.
B. To raise donations in southern Maine.
C. To give job opportunities to the homeless.
D. To offer donated supplies based on requests.
5. Why did Cooper add extra items for the woman moving into a recovery center?
A. He wanted to show his support. B. He made a mistake with the order.
C. He had a personal connection with her. D. He hoped to finish his work in advance.
6. What can we infer about how the community participates in the work?
A. They are slow to respond unless requested.
B. They prefer volunteering to donating items.
C. They often bring donations for multiple purposes.
D. They show a willingness to specific donation needs.
7. Which word can best describe Jo Albanese’s view of Cooper?
A. Concerned. B. Indifferent. C. Admiring. D. Critical.

Researchers at the University of Copenhagen have pioneered an innovative chemical method that transforms abandoned plastic waste into a highly efficient material for capturing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂), potentially addressing two of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
Plastic pollution is severely damaging ecosystems worldwide, with PET plastic making up over 60% of all carbon-containing waste. At the same time, CO₂ levels in the atmosphere continue to rise. This new approach chemically repurposes abandoned PET plastic, commonly used in bottles and textiles, which often ends up polluting landfills and waterways into a specialized sorbent (吸附剂) named BAETA.
Lead researcher Margarita Poderyte explains the potential, “Rather than allowing plastic waste to degrade into environmentally harmful micro-plastics, we convert it into an active climate solution.” The process upcycles low-quality or non-recyclable PET plastic by breaking it down and enhancing it with compounds (复合物) that capture CO₂. BAETA operates efficiently across a wide temperature range, making it capable of effectively capturing CO₂ directly from air or industrial gases.
Experimental results demonstrate that BAETA performs comparably to existing carbon capture technologies while offering distinctive advantages. It maintains stable adsorption efficiency across a wide operational range — from room temperature to approximately 150℃— making it particularly suitable in industrial facilities where exhaust gases are typically hot. The captured CO₂ can be released through controlled heating processes, allowing both storage and material regeneration for repeated use.
This technology is designed to complement rather than compete with established plastic recycling systems. It specifically targets waste that currently have limited reuse pathways, creating value from materials that would otherwise become environmental pollution. Researchers emphasize that successful application depends on scaling production to industrial levels and securing necessary investments.
If widely adopted, this integrated approach could substantially advance circular economy while contributing meaningfully to global carbon reduction — transforming environmental responsibilities into climate solutions through scientific innovation.
8. What does the new technology aim to do?
A. To develop a cheaper way to control CO₂ emission.
B. To better the traditional recycling process for plastics.
C. To find a new way to reduce plastic waste and CO₂ levels.
D. To replace existing carbon capture technologies completely.
9. What does the underlined word “upcycles” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Turns waste into a product of value. B. Reuses waste in its original form.
C. Collects and sorts waste for recycling. D. Breaks down waste into tiny parts.
10. What makes BAETA particularly suitable for use in industrial settings?
A. Its ability to capture CO₂ at low temperatures.
B. Its stable performance under various temperatures.
C. Its low production cost compared to other sorbents.
D. Its capability to break down plastic waste efficiently.
11. What is the main purpose of the author in writing this passage?
A. To criticize current environmental policies.
B. To present a scientific approach and its potential.
C. To promote investment in a promising technology.
D. To explain the chemical process of creating BAETA.

A recent study conducted by Virginia Tech reveals significant age-related differences in how young adults respond to highly processed foods. Researchers designed a controlled experiment involving participants aged 18 to 25. Each individual followed two distinct diets, each lasting two weeks — one heavily based on highly processed items and the other completely free from them. After completing each diet, participants were observed during a buffet-style breakfast to measure their food intake and eating patterns.
The analysis showed that, overall, the total amount of calories consumed did not vary significantly across the entire group. However, when the data were broken down by age, a clear trend emerged. Participants in the 18-21 age group ate noticeably more calories following the highly processed diet and were also more likely to eat snacks after they reported feeling full. In contrast, those in the 22–25 age group did not exhibit this behavior. This suggests that the transitional phase from late adolescence to adulthood may represent a period when individuals are especially easily affected by highly processed foods.
Highly processed foods, which include items like drinks, flavored yogurts, and packaged snacks, account for a large share of the diet among young people. Such foods have been consistently associated with negative health outcomes. In this study, the nutritional profiles of the two diets were perfectly matched in terms of calories, fiber, and nutrient content. This intentional design allowed researchers to separate out the effect of how food is processed, rather than the differences in nutritional composition.
Importantly, the act of eating without hunger has been identified in previous research as a reliable predictor of long-term weight gain among youth. The current findings indicate that exposure to highly processed foods may intensify this tendency, especially in younger participants. If sustained over time, it could contribute to gradual weight accumulation and related health risks.
To build on these results, the research team recommends that future studies involve longer experimental periods, include participants from broader age ranges — particularly younger adolescents — and better real-world eating environments where food choices are frequent and varied.
12. What can be learned about participants after the highly processed diet?
A. The older group showed a stronger desire for more food.
B. The younger group tended to eat extra snacks even when full.
C. Their eating patterns were not influenced by the length of the diet.
D. All of them consumed more calories than on the unprocessed diet.
13. Why were the two diets carefully matched in nutrients?
A. To guarantee the health of the participants.
B To make the diets appealing to the participants.
C. To examine specifically the effect of food processing.
D. To compare the differences of nutrients of the two diets.
14. What does the study suggest about eating without hunger?
A. It has no link to long-term health.
B. It rarely occurs among young adults.
C. It is equally common in both age groups studied.
D. It may be strengthened by highly processed foods.
15. What is one limitation of the current study according to the last paragraph?
A. It did not control the frequency of food choices.
B. Its lack of participants from diverse backgrounds.
C. Its relatively short duration and limited age ranges.
D. It only provided processed foods for the participants.

Of course, in modern life, the emotion management is vital to people, and finding a suitable way to regulate emotions for yourselves has also become a common need. While exercise is a well-known way of improving your mood, there are numerous ways to achieve the same result. ____16____ Here are four mood boosters you might like to try.
Take a Breath
It’s the most natural thing in the world, but it does more than supply oxygen to the brain and body. It can change your heart rate, lower your blood pressure and reduce your stress levels. ____17____ So taking a deep breath can decrease it. For example, by breathing in for the count of four and out for the count of six — helps to re-set your brain, making you feel more in control of your mind and body.
Get in touch
Get in touch with someone can make a big difference to your well-being. As well as reducing feelings of loneliness, one study suggested that “satisfying relationships” count more towards happiness than fame, money, social class and IQ. For example, social interactions that build a meaningful connection can vary from chatting to a server in a café through to helping a neighbour. ____18____
Take a Break
____19____ Even just regular breaks of a few minutes at a time can have positive effects such as lowering your heart rate and making you feel calmer. Letting your mind wander is also an important method. So when you take a break, you don’t want to load your brain with something else. It’s a power tool for creative thinking, for improving mood, for decision making.
Plant Some Houseplants
Houseplants don’t just help to make a room look nice. ____20____ The evidence suggests that plants can help people breathe in more deeply and therefore feel more comfortable and calm. In one study where plants were taken away from an office, employees reported more stress, reduced efficiency and reduced attention.
A. Getting good sleep is the best way to recharge.
B. They can guide you to a healthier and happier life.
C. They have different effects on your physical and mental health.
D. Reflection and taking a short sleep are good ways of de-stressing.
E. They improve air quality and can improve well-being, memory and productivity.
F. When you’re stressed, the brain’s chemical level gets high, disturbing your focus.
G. For people with mobility issues, social media is a valid way to make a connection.

One sunny afternoon, Max was exploring his backyard. With bright eyes full of curiosity, Max loved discovering new things. Today, he found an old soccer ball half-buried under the large oak tree. Excitedly, he dusted it off and kicked it, watching as it rolled across the grass.
“Whoa, Max! Nice kick!” called his mom. Max smiled at the praise and kicked the ball again, harder this time, sending it bouncing off the fence.
At dinner that evening, Max announced, “Mom, Dad, I want to play soccer like the big kids at school.” His parents exchanged a glance and smiled. “That sounds like a great idea, Max,” said his dad. “There’s a soccer club starting next week. We can sign you up.”
Max was thrilled. All week he practiced in the yard. His little sister, Lily, would clap her hands and cheer, “Go Max, go!”
But when the first day of soccer practice came, Max felt nervous. The other kids seemed so skilled and confident. He watched as they easily dribbled (运球) the ball around markers. When it was Max’s turn, he stumbled (绊倒) and fell. Some of the kids laughed. Max’s cheeks burned with embarrassment.
“Don’t worry, Max,” Coach Tom smiled. “Everyone starts somewhere. The important thing is to keep trying.”
Max nodded, though his heart felt heavy. He wondered if he’d ever be as good as the other children.
As the days passed, Max’s confidence weakened. Each mistake on the field felt bigger than the last. He wanted to improve but feared the others’ laughter. During lunch breaks, he would sit alone, practicing moves in his head.
One day, as he sat quietly on the swing after school, his friend Emma joined him. “Why so sad, chum?” she asked. Max sighed and told her about his soccer struggles. Emma listened carefully and then said, “You know, the best way to get better at something is to practice a lot. Maybe we could practice together after school?”

【答案】Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m writing to recommend a topic for the first issue of “Digital Well-being 2026.” I suggest focusing on “Balancing Screen Time and Real-life Interactions.”
In today’s digital age, many students are addicted to social media and online games, which often leads to poor academic performance and health issues. By discussing this topic, we can raise awareness of healthy digital habits. It will help students learn how to manage their time effectively and maintain a balance between the virtual world and real life.
I hope you will consider my suggestion.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】Max cheered up at the idea. He nodded eagerly, a spark of hope returning to his eyes. After school, they met at the park. Emma was patient and encouraging. She showed him how to keep the ball close to his feet while running and how to kick it straight. At first, Max stumbled again, but Emma didn’t laugh. Instead, she helped him up and said, “Mistakes are just steps to getting better.” Max practiced every day, and slowly, his movements became smoother. He even started to enjoy the game again. His confidence grew with each successful dribble.
Soon, it was time for Max’s first soccer game. His heart pounded as he walked onto the field. The other team looked strong, and Max felt nervous. But then he saw Emma on the sidelines, holding a sign that read “Go Max!” He took a deep breath and remembered all their practice. In the second half, Max got the ball. He dribbled past two players and kicked it into the goal! The crowd cheered. Max couldn’t believe it. Coach Tom patted his back, and his teammates high-fived him. Max smiled, feeling proud and happy. He realized that with hard work and friends by his side, anything was possible.
