Mr. Carle’s lively, creative, and colorful works have been loved by children around the world. “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” is Mr. Carle’s best-known book. Eric Carle was born in New York in 1929. His parents were German. As he grew up, Eric spent a lot of time with his father, who would take him out walking in nature. His father would show him small living things, explaining their life cycles and filling the young boy’s head with wonder. Eric thought this helped explain why so many of his books are about nature, bugs and animals. When Eric was 6, the family moved back to Germany because his mother missed her home. Life in Germany was unbelievably sad and difficult for Eric and his family during World War Ⅱ. After the war, Eric studied art in school. In 1952, Eric moved back to New York, where he got a job at the New York Times. After author Bill Martin Jr. saw a drawing that Eric had done in the paper, he asked Eric to illustrate his book, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?”. The book came out in 1967 and was a big hit, which also made Eric popular. Eric continued to work with Mr. Martin for years. Though he also created pictures for books with other authors, Eric created many of his most well-loved books completely on his own. Most of Mr. Carle’s books are meant for younger readers. He said that he wanted to help make school a fun, welcoming place. “I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn,” he said. “I want to show them that learning is really both attractive and fun.” 24.What played a main role in determining the topic of Eric Carle’s books? D.A few years before he passed away. 27.What did Eric Carle write children’s books for? A.Living a wealthy life. B.Supporting his mother. C.Inspiring kids to learn. D.Teaching kids to draw. C Taking good care of your teeth may be linked to better brain health, according to a study published in the July 5,2023, online issue of Neurology. “Our study found that gum(牙龈)disease and tooth loss were linked to brain shrinkage(萎缩) in the hippocampus(海马体),which plays a role in memory and Alzheimer's disease,” said study author Satoshi Yamaguchi, Ph. D. of Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. The study involved 172 people without memory problems. Their average age was 67.Participants had dental exams and took memory tests at the beginning of the study. They also had brain scans to measure the volume of their hippocampus at the beginning of the study. This was measured again four years later. For each participant, researchers counted the number of teeth and checked for amount of gum disease. Researchers found that the number of teeth and amount of gum disease was linked to changes in the left hippocampus of the brain. For people with slight gum disease, having fewer teeth was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage, which is the same for people with serious gum disease having more teeth. After adjusting for age, researchers found that for people with slight gum disease, the increase in the rate of brain shrinkage due to one less tooth was equal to nearly one year of brain aging. By contrast, for people with severe gum disease, the increase in brain shrinkage due to one more tooth was equal to 1.3 years of brain aging. “These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just maintaining the teeth,” Yamaguchi said. “The findings suggest that controlling the progression of gum disease through regular dental visits is crucial, and that teeth with serious gum disease may need to be removed and replaced with appropriate false ones.” Yamaguchi said future studies are needed with larger groups of people. The limitation of the study is that it was conducted in one region of Japan, so the results may not be applied to other locations. 28. What is Yamaguchi's study mainly about? A. The causes of gum disease. B. The symptoms(症状) of brain shrinkage. C. The connection between the teeth and the brain. D. The ways to take good care of one's teeth. 29. How did researchers reach the conclusion? A. By referring to previous studies. B. By making comparisons. C. By conducting a survey among dentists. D. By proving experts' theory in experiments. 30. What do the research findings indicate? A. Gum disease is increasing among people. B. Removing natural teeth is bad for dental health. C.The health of gum is important. D. Doing a routine dental checkup can avoid gum disease. 31. What is expected of the future studies according to Yamaguchi? A. Exploring treatments for gum disease. B. Seeking new methods to improve brain health. C. Involving people from other places in the research. D. Applying the research to relieve Alzheimer's disease. D While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens. The team studied the daytime screen-based activities of 475 teenagers using daily surveys. They asked the teens how many hours they had spent that day communicating with friends through social media and how many hours they spent playing video games, surfing the internet and watching television or videos. Finally, the researchers asked if they had joined in any of these activities in the hour before bed. Next, the team measured their sleep time for one week. The researchers found that the teens spent an average of two hours per day communicating with friends via social media, about 1.3 hours playing video games, less than an hour surfing the internet and about 1.7 hours watching television or videos. For every hour throughout the day that they used screens to communicate with friends, they fell asleep about 11 minutes later averagely. For every hour to play video games, they fell asleep about 9 minutes later. Those who talked, texted or played games in the hour before bed lost the most sleep: about 30 minutes later. Interestingly, David, lead author of the study, said the team found no obvious relations between passive screen-based activities and sleep. “It could be that passive activities are less mentally exciting than interactive activities,” said Anne, co-author of the study. “It’s a tricky situation,” she said. “These screen tools are really important to everyone nowadays, so it’s hard to put a limit on them, but if you’re really looking out for a teenager’s health and well-being, you might consider limiting the more interactive activities, especially in the hour before bed.” 32. Which of the following belongs to interactive screen activities? A. Seeing movies. B. Watching videos. C. Texting friends. D. Surfing the internet. 33. Who might lose the most sleep according to the text? A. Lucy who watched a three-hour movie before going to bed. B. Jack who had a 30-minute video chat with his brother before bed. C. Sam who played computer games for two hours throughout the day. D. Amy who chatted with her friends on WeChat for one hour in the morning. 34. What does the underlined word “tricky” mean in paragraph 4? A. challenging. B. frightening. C. hopeless. D. encouraging. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Screen time activities cut down our sleep hours B. Interactive screen use reduces sleep time in teenagers C. Passive screen use is better than interactive screen use D. Mum had a hard time raising us on her own in our small community of New Westminster, BC. My dad had drowned(溺死) in Pitt Lake, five years ago. Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would put a new piece of cardboard(硬纸板) in our shoes, because our soles(鞋底)were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have “French toast” ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those times. Rent was 25 dollars a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be forced to leave right after Christmas on the first of January. Christmas was approaching, and we were given a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund from social services. The inspector came to our house, and searched it from top to bottom to be sure we didn’t have any food hidden away. When he didn’t find any, he offered the money to Mum. Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the 25 dollars to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas. Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas tree, cleaning snow, and doing odd jobs(零工) to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots(靴子). Boots that weren’t repaired, boots with no cardboard in the soles. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of 23 dollars. Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. I was excited, as I hurried up the road to the shoe store, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized at our house, we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for Christmas candies. I knew that we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas, and I felt sad. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: As I continued walking, I began to reconsider my plan.__________________________  ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2:With great excitement and tears in my eyes, I knocked on the door.__________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
