Two years ago, Sarah would pass by a park near her house every day after school. Plastic bottles, empty cans, and broken toys littered the roadside. Seeing this, Sarah felt sad.
One afternoon, Sarah noticed some kids selling orange juice at the park. People stopped to buy it. That was when Sarah got an idea.

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容完成句子。
Should books always have a happy ending?
The purpose of World Book Day is to encourage people to enjoy reading and there’s no doubt that a book’s ending is usually a big part of that joy. Even so, there are plenty of stories that don’t finish on a happy note. What do you think? Should books always have a happy ending?
Part of the reason we read in the first place is that reading makes us happy. We read to get away from troubles and worries in real life. If your reading experiences are full of sadness or other negative feelings, you may give up reading. If your experiences of reading are connected to positive feelings, you could be encouraged to carry on reading. It doesn’t mean stories with happy endings cannot make you enjoy reading. They can also include surprises, which make the stories quite dramatic and exciting, although you know everything’s going to end well. Exploring love into the characters’ lives is equally as satisfying.
In real life, the story doesn’t stop at the “happy ending”. It doesn’t end. It keeps going past that happy moment to a lifetime of more moments both good and bad. Books with unhappy endings are useful because they show you the true feelings such as sadness but in a controlled way. They can help you deal with these feelings in your life. The stories explore the painful side of love and the topic of heartbreak. Reading about these kinds of things in stories can help make us feel like we’re not alone in our personal experiences. Some experts say that experiencing negative feelings can make you better at understanding how other people are feeling. This ability, known as empathy (同情), helps you to connect with people and support them through hard times. It’s the “unhappy” endings that have the greatest influence.

13-year-old Sarah sits in her yard (院子), lying out her handmade crafts (手工制品) on the table. There are baskets, flower pots, and cloth bags—all made from recycled materials. They are not just creative objects (物品); they’re part of Sarah’s project to make a greener community.
“Mom, what if we sell handmade crafts?” she asked excitedly that evening. “Then we can buy trees for our neighborhood with the money.”
With her mom’s help, Sarah started making crafts with great interest, using old boxes, plastic bottles and empty cans. Every day after school, she sat in her yard, waiting for customers. At first, no one came. Sarah felt down, but she didn’t give up.
Later, people began to stop by. A kind woman bought a cloth bag, saying it was perfect for shopping. Kids liked the flower pots, and one boy even asked Sarah to make him a special basket for his toys. By the end of the first month, Sarah had made $150! She bought 30 small trees. Together with her parents, they planted the trees around the park and along the sidewalks.
Now, the neighborhood looks nicer, and the birds have more places to rest. Sarah even teaches her friends how to make eco-friendly (环保的) crafts after school. They organize sales every month to raise money for new projects like bird feeders.

The idea of “smart” cities was first put forward in the 1970s in the United States. Since then, it has spread to more and more countries. People hoped new technologies could help them live happier lives in cities.
Many tech companies are also interested in building “smart” cities. Leading tech companies have all offered their smart-city solutions (解决方法). However, I am unsatisfied with some project designers (设计者). They proudly show off (炫耀) exciting new technologies like 5G, but they don’t know how to use them to solve real-world problems. In other words, they sound more like tech salespeople than city builders.
City planning should always focus on (专注于) one question: what can be done to improve the living conditions of the citizens? Tech companies should develop more technologies that can help citizens’ daily lives. Some project designers can do some surveys on citizens in order to learn about the problems citizens meet daily so that they can design something useful.
City managers should carefully think about the kind of life they want their cities to provide for their citizens. Planners and tech developers should work according to this blueprint. They should stop worrying about making our cities “smart” and start to focus on making them better.
36. Why does the idea of “smart” cities spread to more and more countries?
A. Because it was first put forward in the 1970s in the United States.

C. Because it made city managers and companies more interested in 5G.
D. Because many tech companies want to help people for free.
