The grocery store might not be your favorite place to visit when you’re at home, but isn’t it ever fun when you’re in another country? Honestly speaking, they’re one of those strange little destinations that I like to sniff out everywhere I go, much as other travellers head toward clothing stores, libraries, cafés or galleries.
The biggest beauty of the grocery store—whether it’s a huge supermarket or a tiny one—is that it gives you a glimpse into what local people buy to cook. This offers clues into their lifestyles and preferences, and into the agricultural and cooking practices of the country. I stare at the strange fruits and vegetables, the seafood, the cheese, the spices, the breads, and oh, the chocolate... always the chocolate!
Being an environmental nerd ( 痴 迷 者 ) I am, I like paying attention to packaging, which can reflect their attitude towards environmental protection. Italy, for example, has a habit of requiring customers to bag their fruits and vegetables in plastic for weighing, while Sri Lanka leaves everything loose in bins. In Brazil, everything is prepackaged in a layer of plastic.
People in grocery stores tend to be friendlier. They smile, say hello, and sometimes ask questions, which can lead to great conversations. I had a further discussion with a teen-aged cashier in Sri Lanka, over which bag of crunchy mix to buy. He insisted that the one labeled ‘spicy’ would be too hot for me, but I told him I was willing to risk it. He laughed and we ended up talking about my favorite Sri Lankan foods for ten minutes.
The financial savings extend to souvenirs, too. Whether it is ground spices for my mom or chocolates for my kids, the grocery store is the first place I look for unique gifts. It’s interesting then to come home and look at one’s own local grocery store through new eyes. What would a visitor think? What stands out, and what do the food displays say about us as a culture? You might be surprised by what you realize.
4. What is the benefit of visiting grocery stores of other countries in the author’s opinion?
A. Knowing their financial practice.
B. Making friends with store owners.
C. Buying cheaper food and souvenirs.
D. Knowing local people and the country.
5. Why does the author mention some countries she visited?
A. To show their strange lifestyles.
B. To show the levels of their wealth.
C. To show their packaging advantages.
D. To show their environmental awareness.
6. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. Sri Lankans tend to become friendlier.
B. Grocery stores are always social places.
C. People like to share their ideas about food.
D. More cultures can be learned in grocery stores.
7. What would the author probably suggest readers doing?
A. Visiting grocery stores while travelling.
B. Buying cultural souvenirs in foreign countries.
C. Knowing the grocery culture before travelling.
D. Exchanging shopping experience with friends.
C
As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children.
Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification (沙漠化). “Within10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification.
Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable (可持续的) crops, using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilizers (肥料) rather than chemicals.
In 2012, Toumi continued her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.”
By September2016, more than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to plant l million trees by 2028. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the programme to Algeria and Morocco.
8. How did Toumi’s holiday trips to Tunisia influence her?
A. They fired her enthusiasm for helping others. B. They helped her better understand her father.
C. They made her decide to leave the country. D. They destroyed her dream of being a teacher.
9. What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland?
A. Cold weather. B. Soil pollution. C. Low rainfall. D. Forest damage.
10. Why did Toumi set up Acacias for All in Tunisia?
A. To create job opportunities for young people. B. To promote the protection of their farmland.
C. To persuade the farmers not to use fertilizers. D. To help the children obtain a basic education.
11. Which of the following can be the best title to the text?
A. Saving Water in Africa B. Fighting Poverty in North Africa
C. Holding back the Sahara D. Planting Trees in Tunisia
D
“Leave her alone.” Hans Hubermann entered the fray (争吵). His gentle voice made its way in, as slipping through a crowd. “Leave her to me.” He moved closer and sat on the floor, against the wall. The floor was cold and unkind.
“You know how to roll a cigarette?” he asked her and for the next hour or so, they sat in the rising pool of darkness, playing with the tobacco and the cigarette papers and Hans Hubermann smoking them.
When the hour was up, Liesel could roll a cigarette well. She still didn’t have a bath.
To most people, Hans Hubermann was barely visible. An un-special person. Certainly, his painting skills were excellent. His musical ability was better than average. Somehow, though, and I’m sure you’ve met people like this, he was able to appear as merely part of the background, even if he was standing at the front of a line. He was always just there. Not noticeable. Not important or particularly valuable.
The frustration of that appearance, as you can imagine, was completely misleading, let’s say. There definitely was value in him, and it did not go unnoticed by Liesel Meminger. (The human child — so much cleverer at times than the stupid adults.) She saw it immediately.
His manner.
The quiet air around him.
When he turned the light on in the small, humble washroom that night, Liesel observed the strangeness of her foster father’s (养父) eyes. They were made of kindness, and silver. Like soft silver, melting. Liesel, upon seeing those eyes, understood that Hans Hubermann was worth a lot.
When Liesel finally had a bath, after two weeks of living on Himmel Street, Rosa gave her an enormous tight hug. Nearly choking her, she said, “It’s about time!”
After a few months, they were no longer Mr and Mrs Hubermann. With a few typical words, Rosa said, “Now listen, Liesel — from now on you call me Mama.” She thought a moment. “What did you call your real mother?”
Liesel answered quietly. “Also Mama.”
12. What might be the cause of the fray before Hans interrupted it?
A. Liesel refused to have a bath.
B. Liesel was annoyed by Rosa’s cooking.
C Liesel wanted to learn how to roll a cigarette.
D. Liesel suffered from living with Hans and Rosa.
13. What did Liesel notice immediately when she met Hans?
A. His musical ability. B. His painting skills.
C His being invisible. D. His personal qualities.
14. Which of the following expressions best describe Liesel?
A. Shy and thoughtful. B. Sensitive and clever.
C. Naughty and tough. D. Imaginative and easy-going.
15. What does the underlined sentence “After a few months, they were no longer Mr and Mrs Hubermann.”mean?
A. Liesel started to call them Hanns and Rosa.
B. Liesel was sent back to her real parents.
C. Liesel adapted herself to the new family.
D. Liesel was used to Rosa’s strange manner.

Look, let’s be honest-there’s no such thing as a “green” vacation. You’ll leave a carbon footprint, no matter what. ____16____ Here are a few questions to ask:
Is it a B Corp?
B Corps are businesses that meet a strict set of standards by the nonprofit B Lab. They include requirements for governance, workers, customers, community and the environment. ____17____ You’ll see some fairly well-known brands, like Intrepid Travel. But you won’t find the names of any major airlines, car rental companies or hotel chains-at least, not yet.
Does the company have any other environmental certifications?
Third-party certifications from Green Key, LEED and WELL can be signs that a travel company means business about the environment. Transportation companies may also offer verified certifications from organizations like Terrapass or the Gold Standard Foundation. ____18____ However, it’s a good start.
____19____
If the company claims to be green, don’t just take its word for it. Listen to what it says. If you see nothing but models on its Instagram channel or ads for online discounts on its site, perhaps it’s a shade of fake green. “A company’s social media strategy is generally a reflection of its current ethos and goals,” explained Julia Carter, founder of Craft Travel.
How deep is its commitment to the environment?
____20____ For example the Travel Corporation publishes an annual impact report that maps its progress against 11 sustainability goals developed by the United Nations. Many cruise lines also publish detailed reports that allow you to check their commitment to the environment against several objective standards.
A. But your trip can be green-ish.
B. What’s the company saying to everyone?
C. How can we find a reliable company online?
D. Don’t trust anything the company says to the public.
E. These certifications aren’t a guarantee the company is green.
F. Look for reliable reports on sustainability from a travel company.
G. You can search the directory of these forward-looking companies online.

Agatha was in the library, reading the Girl Detective series, when she noticed something strange. Her best friends, Timmy and Florence, were talking to each other in whispers while keeping a good, safe distance from her! When she waved at them, they looked away.
Things only got stranger in art class. Timmy and Florence went to sit at a different table from Agatha busy painting and glanced at her when they thought she wasn’t looking.
Now, Agatha considered herself to be something of a detective. After all, she had read many detective stories for children and even had an old broken magnifying glass(放大镜)abandoned by her father. When the rest of the class went out for lunch, she slipped to Timmy and Florence’s table and examined it carefully with the magnifying glass.
There was paint, and red and pink construction paper. What could they be doing? This was definitely a mystery that needed solving!
After lunch Timmy and Florence chatted to her as if nothing was going on, but they kept smiling at her in a slightly strange way. Of course, Agatha could have asked them what they were up to, and they might have told her -but she wouldn’t have a chance to become a detective!
On the way home from school, Florence and her mum happened to walk ahead of Agatha and her mum. Agatha saw them go into the bookshop. Strange, again. Florence didn’t read much—no matter how many detective stories Agatha recommended to her!
The next day at school, Agatha kept an eye on her friends and tried to work out their mystery, but they seemed determined to keep things secret. She asked them if they would like to play with her after school, but they said they couldn’t because they were busy. Even more mysterious…
When Agatha’s mum came to pick her up after school, she was so lost in the unsolved mystery that she hardly noticed her busy father was coming along, which was unusual. When they arrived home, her father said she could go into the living room.
Opening the door of the living room, Agatha heard voices shout from darkness, “SURPRISE!”

A 9. C 10. B 11. C

故选A。
根据文章第二段中的“A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification. (平均降雨量的减少和干旱严重程度的增加导致突尼斯大约75%的农业用地受到荒漠化的威胁。)”可知,导致突尼斯农田沙漠化的主因是降水量减少。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“In 2012, Toumi continued her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.” (2012年,Toumi继续她与沙漠作战的梦想。她搬到了突尼斯,建立了一个名为“Acacias for All”的项目,将她的可持续农业理念付诸行动。“我想向农村地区的年轻人展示,他们可以在自己所在的地方创造机会。没有人比那些生活在没有水的地方的人更能理解荒漠化和气候变化的影响。”)”和第五段中“Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. (Toumi估计需要大约300万棵金合欢树来保护Tunisia的农田。)”可知,Toumi建立Acacias for All的目的是为了推广保护他们农田的行动。故选B。
【11题详解】

I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification. 因此,“Holding back the Sahara (阻挡Sahara)”最能概括文章主题。故选C。
D
“Leave her alone.” Hans Hubermann entered the fray (争吵). His gentle voice made its way in, as slipping through a crowd. “Leave her to me.” He moved closer and sat on the floor, against the wall. The floor was cold and unkind.
“You know how to roll a cigarette?” he asked her, and for the next hour or so, they sat in the rising pool of darkness, playing with the tobacco and the cigarette papers and Hans Hubermann smoking them.
C. Liesel wanted to learn how to roll a cigarette.
D. Liesel suffered from living with Hans and Rosa.
13. What did Liesel notice immediately when she met Hans?
A. His musical ability. B. His painting skills.
C. His being invisible. D. His personal qualities.
14. Which of the following expressions best describe Liesel?
A. Shy and thoughtful. B. Sensitive and clever.
C. Naughty and tough. D. Imaginative and easy-going.
15. What does the underlined sentence “After a few months, they were no longer Mr and Mrs Hubermann.”mean?
A. Liesel started to call them Hanns and Rosa.
B. Liesel was sent back to her real parents.
C. Liesel adapted herself to the new family.
D. Liesel was used to Rosa’s strange manner.
A 13. D 14. A 15. C
根据第三段“When the hour was up, Liesel could roll a cigarette well. She still didn’t have a bath.(时间到了,Liesel可以很好地卷一支烟了。她仍然没有洗澡)”和倒数第三段“When Liesel finally had a bath, after two weeks of living on Himmel Street, Rosa gave her an enormous tight hug. Nearly choking her, she said, “It’s about time!”(在Himmel街住了两个星期后,Liesel终于洗了个澡,Rosa紧紧地拥抱了她一下。她哽咽着说:“是时候了!”)”可推知, Hans介入前,她们争吵的原因是Liesel拒绝洗澡。故选A。
根据第五到七段“There definitely was value in him, and it did not go unnoticed by Liesel Meminger. (The human child—so much cleverer at times than the stupid adults.) She saw it immediately. His manner. The quiet air around him.(他身上肯定有价值,Liesel Meminger也注意到了这一点。(人类的孩子——有时比愚蠢的成年人聪明得多。)她立刻就看出来了。他的态度。他安静的神态)”可推知,Liesel遇到Hans时立刻注意到了他的个人品质。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段的“When Liesel finally had a bath, after two weeks of living on Himmel Street, Rosa gave her an enormous tight hug. (在Himmel街住了两个星期后,Liesel终于洗了个澡,Rosa紧紧地拥抱了她一下)”和倒数第二段的“After a few months, they were no longer Mr and Mrs Hubermann.(几个月后,他们不再是Hubermann先生和Hubermann太太了)”可知,Liesel一开始到这个家很拘束,并且经历了几个月才适应。 以及第二段黑体字部分的“Her way of showing it just happened to be strange. It involved bashing her with wooden spoon and words from time to time.(她的表现方式恰好很奇怪。其中包括不时用木勺打她以及用言语抨击她)”可知,尽管养母偶尔打骂她,但Liesel Meminger还是愿意叫她妈妈。由此推知,Liesel Meminger是善解人意、体贴的。故选A。
根据倒数第二段的“With a few typical words, Rosa said, “Now listen, Liesel — from now on you call me Mama.” She thought a moment. “What did you call your real mother?”(几句平常典型的话后,Rosa说:“听着,Liesel,从现在起你叫我妈妈。”她想了一会儿。“你怎么称呼你的亲生母亲?”)”可知,几个月后Rosa接纳了Liesel,让她叫自己妈妈,这意味着Liesel慢慢适应了这个家庭。由此猜测“After a few months, they were no longer Mr and Mrs Hubermann.”

____20____ For example, the Travel Corporation publishes an annual impact report that maps its progress against 11 sustainability goals developed by the United Nations.

空处为小标题,后文“If the company claims to be green, don’t just take its word for it. Listen to what it says.(如果一家公司声称自己是环保的,不要只相信它的话。听听它说了什么)”表明应仔细聆听公司的发声,B选项“公司对每个人说了什么”符合本段主旨。故选B。
【20题详解】

【43题详解】
考查动词时态和主谓一致。句意:到目前为止,循环设计的理念已经赢得了越来越多的关注。根据时间状语up to now可知,句子需用现在完成时,其结构为have/has+动词的过去分词;主语The concept of circular design是单数,助动词用has。故填has won。

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Opening the door of the living room, Agatha heard voices shout from darkness, “SURPRISE!”. When she entered the darkened living room, the lights came on suddenly. Her best friend Timmy and Florence were there, grinning! On the table were a cake with candles and a pile of presents. Mum and Dad followed her into the living-room and lit the candles, saying: “Happy Birthday, dear. You were so distracted by the mystery to be solved as to forget today is your birthday! Now, blow the candles, make a wish and enjoy the cake.”
After eating the cake, Agatha got down to the business of opening her birthday presents. The first gift was the big red and pink birthday card with “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” written on it in Timmy and Florence’s childish handwriting. “We hope you like the card we made for you!” said Timmy, and Florence added, “We also bought the latest Sherlock Holmes Detective series for you!” Agatha hugged her friends in appreciation of their surprise gifts. Mum and Dad handed her a brand-new magnifying glass in place of the old broken one. Agatha might not have solved the mystery, but it was still a wonderful birthday party!
