I was a total outsider, bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town. But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone. Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me. After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one I thought was only possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day. Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone’s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change. 4.What was the author’s life like when he was 12? A.Boring. B.Peaceful. C.Painful. D.Meaningful. 5.How did the volunteer work benefit the author? A.It made him popular in his town. B.It helped him find the meaning of life. C.It helped him understand others’ lives better. D.It helped to shape his dream career. 6.Why did the author choose writing as his job? A.He was inspired by his teacher. B.He could pass positive energy to readers. C.He wanted to share his school experiences. D.He found he had a talent for writing. 7.What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph? A.Say “no” to bullies bravely. B.Make positive changes in their lives. C.Treat others with kindness in daily life. D.Learn to care more about others’ feelings. C If you are a teenager without a job,you probably do not have much extra money. Sometimes parents will give their children a weekly pocket money for doing small housework, but it is often not enough once the children grow into teenagers and want to do things with their friends all of the time. How to make money is an important thing for teens to learn. If you’re wondering how a teenager can make good money, some ideas might be: Getting a part-time job at a local restaurant or store is always a sure way to make money as a teen. But getting a job somewhere like this might be hard, considering mangy jobs in local stores are being taken by adults more and more often. Babysitting is always a good way to make money as a teenager, and finding jobs as a babysitter is often easier than finding a job at a stores. Doing landscaping(绿化)is something that most adults do not like to do,and teens can usually find jobs around their neighbourhood doing the landscaping of friends and family. Some teens are good at something such as writing or photography. These teens can make money by doing things such as writing articles for newspapers or magazines or selling their photos online. Teens who live in a country area can try raising their own animals such as chickens, and selling them or their products. Looking for jobs can seem hard at first ,but if you have a try ,it should not be too hard to find a job or way to make money. 8.What problem do teenagers have to face when finding a job in local stores? A.Low pay. B.Heavy word. C.Long working hours. D.Competition with grown-ups. 9.Which of the following is easier for teens form the country if they want to earn extra money? A.Babysitting. B.Doing landscaping. C.Selling photos online. D.Raising animals. 10.What can we learn form the text? A.Most grown-ups hate doing landscaping. B.Getting a part-time job is hard for teens. C.Pocket money form parents is often enough for teens. D.Looking after babies is easier than serving customers in a restaurant. 11.What can be the best title for the text? A.The Necessary Skills to Make Money B.How Important Is Money to a Teenager C.How Can a Teenager Make Extra Money D.Teenagers Should Depend on Themselves D Playing tennis regularly could help keep people off death, but football, rugby and running may not help people to live longer, a study suggests. A study followed more than 80,000 people for an average of nine years to find out if certain sports protected them against early death. It found that people who played racket sports regularly were the least likely to die over the study period, reducing their individual risk by 47 percent compared with people who did no exercise. Swimmers also reduced their chance of death by 28 percent, aerobics (有氧运动) fans by 27 percent and cyclists by 15 percent. Yet running appeared to have no impact at all on dying early, and neither did playing football or rugby. Scientists say the difference may lie in the social aspect which goes alongside sports like tennis and squash (壁球), which often involve clubs and organized activities outside of the game. It means that people often have larger social net-works and tend to keep up activities into later life, both of which are proven to be good for health. In contrast, people who play team sports often do not move onto a new sport once their teams break up for family, or injury reasons. They become watchers rather than participants in their chosen activity. The researchers found that playing racket sports was associated with a 56 percent lower risk from heart death. Similarly, swimmers lowered their heart disease or stroke risk by 41 percent, and people who took part in activities like aerobics, dance or gymnastics lowered their risk by 36 percent. But again running, football and rugby had no significant impact on heart deaths. However, other experts argue that this study must not be misinterpreted as showing that running and football do not protect against heart disease. In this study both runners and footballers had a lower rate of death from heart disease. 12.Which sport has hardly any impact on protecting people against early death? A.Cycling. B.Swimming. C.Rugby.
