Josefa Marin went to New York from Mexico in 1987, supporting her daughter back home with the $140 a week she earned at a sweater factory. With that small income, she had to collect recyclables, trading in cans for five cents each. When the clothing factory closed down in the late 2000s, she became a full-time recycler, picking up cans and bottles to make ends meet.
Marin’s story is not unique. Millions around the world make a living from picking through waste and reselling it. Only about 28 percent of the cans that could be recycled are actually recycled. Rubbish collectors keep millions of additional recyclables out of landfills every year.
Yet collectors are ruled out by government policies (政策). The United States Supreme Court in 1988 stated that household garbage is public property (财产) once it’s on the street. That enables police to search rubbish for evidence (证据), but that protection hasn’t always been extended to recyclers. And in places like New York City, which is testing city-owned locked containers to hide garbage from mice, containers are made clearly inaccessible (难得到的) for collectors.
“There’s value in the waste, and we feel that value should belong to the people, not the city or the companies”, says Ryan Castalia, director of a nonprofit recycling and community center in Brooklyn.
Recognized or not, waste pickers have long been treated with respect. Marin recalls an occasion when someone living next to a building where she was collecting cans threw water at her. “Because I recycle it doesn’t mean I am less of a person than anyone else,” she says. Some governments are taking action because they realize that protecting the environment and humanity should go hand in hand.
51.What is the author’s purpose of telling about Marin?
A.To explain why Marin left her country.
B.To show how recycling benefits the poor.
C.To describe Marin’s difficult life and work.
D.To introduce the topic through a personal story.
52.What problem do waste pickers face according to Paragraph 3?
A.They are protected by the police.
B.They have to fight with the police.
C.They are stopped by government policies.
D.They need to help the police look for evidence.
53.What does Ryan Castalia believe about recyclable waste?
A.Its economic value is often forgotten.
B.It needs better protection from the city.
C.Its value should be shared by the public.
D.It should be managed by nonprofit organizations.
54.What can we infer from Marin’s experience of being thrown water?
A.She was collecting cans in a wrong place.
B.Waste pickers are often looked down upon.
C.Local people were protecting their privacy.
D.Waste pickers have no interest in their jobs.
55.In which part of a newspaper can we probably find the passage?
A.Society. B.Fashion. C.Business. D.Technology.

A study of nearly 600 bird species (种类) found that light pollution from human activities can make birds sing for nearly an hour longer each day. Researchers reported the finding in Science on August 21, 2025.
________ “We thought birds might change their behavior because of night lights, but we didn’t expect such a big effect,” said Neil Gilbert, an ecologist at Oklahoma State University.
Past research has shown human-made lights harm wildlife greatly. Birds that migrate (迁徙) at night may lose their way and hit buildings and die. Some small studies have shown birds are active earlier in the day in light-polluted areas.
Gilbert and his partner, Brent Pease, wanted to study this more widely. The team analyzed 4.4 million bird calls and studied the daily start and end times of the singing activity of 583 bird species, comparing those times to the local light pollution levels.
In the brightest places, birds sang much longer than those in the darkest areas—18 minutes in the morning, and 32 minutes in the evening. The effect was particularly (尤其) strong among bird species with larger eyes, possibly because they are more sensitive (敏感的) to the light.
It’s still unclear if this hurts birds. It might disrupt (扰乱) their sleep, but birds could sleep more during the day. Or it may even be helpful, giving birds more time to look for food for their babies.
These findings show how human lights quietly affect wildlife. “Our careless night lights have wide effects on animals around us,” said Pease.
56.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By giving a fact. B.By asking a question. C.By telling a story. D.By explaining a reason.
57.Which of the following can be put in ________.
A.Many people joined the research.
B.The result surprised the team a lot.
C.The team needs to do further studies.
D.The light has a great influence on different birds.
58.What does the underlined word “analyzed” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.found. B.heard. C.researched. D.collected.
59.How much longer in total did birds sing in the brightest places than those in the darkest areas?
A.18 minutes. B.14 minutes. C.32 minutes. D.50 minutes.
60.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Light Pollution Makes Birds Sing Longer.
B.City Lights Change Birds’ Singing Styles.
C.Birds with Small Eyes Love Bright Lights.
D.Light Pollution Harms Night-Migrating Birds.

Huawei’s New Computer with HarmonyOS
On May 8, 2025, Huawei showed its first computer that runs on HarmonyOS in Shenzhen. This is a big and important moment for China’s technology. It shows that China can make its own high-tech products. More than 10,000 engineers and 20 research groups worked for five years to make this computer. Now, it can compete with popular operating systems like Windows and macOS in the world.
The HarmonyOS PC uses HarmonyOS 5. This is an operating system that China made all by itself. It works very fast, keeps your information safe, and helps different devices (设备) connect easily. For example, there is an AI helper named “Xiaoyi”. You can tell it what to do with your voice. It can help you make slides for a class report or quickly tell you what happened in a meeting. Also, you can use this system to control many Huawei devices at the same time without any trouble.
Keeping your data safe is a big thing for this computer. The HarmonyOS PC has a special “brain” (kernel) that China developed on its own. It also uses strong encryption (加密) in the chip to protect your information. There is a “super privacy mode”. You can press a button, and it will stop the camera and microphone from working.
Huawei wants to build a strong and long-lasting system for this computer. So, it works with universities to teach students how to make apps for HarmonyOS. Huawei also changed over 300 apps so they can work on the HarmonyOS PC. Now, 7.2 million people who make apps have joined, and they have written 110 million lines of code. This makes a great place for new ideas in the future.
There are still hard things to deal with. Other old-time operating systems are very popular, and it’s not easy to beat them. But the HarmonyOS PC shows that China is moving from using other countries’ technology to making its own great inventions. Huawei’s CEO said, “HarmonyOS is not just an operating system. It’s the start of a smart life.”
61.What can we know about the HarmonyOS 5 from the passage?
A.It is slow but very safe for users.
B.It can only be used on Huawei computers.
C.It allows users to control different Huawei devices easily.
D.It is a system that was made with the help of foreign countries.
62.Why did Huawei work with universities?
A.To sell more HarmonyOS computers to students.
B.To train developers to create apps for HarmonyOS.
C.To borrow money from universities for research.
D.To ask university students to test the new computer.
63.Why is the “super privacy mode” important?
A.It makes the computer run faster.
B.It helps users control different devices at once.
C.It can protect privacy.
D.It teaches users how to write code for new apps.
64.What can we infer from Huawei’s CEO’s words?
A.HarmonyOS will only be used on computers, not other devices.
B.Huawei wants to sell HarmonyOS to other countries as a foundation.
C.The CEO thinks making an operating system is very easy.
D.Huawei plans to use HarmonyOS to create more smart products in the future.
65.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.To compare HarmonyOS with Windows and macOS.
B.To list the problems of old-time operating systems.
