Stephen Hawking was one of the greatest theoretical physicists (理论物理学家) of the 20th and 21st centuries. People respect the British scientist not only because of his achievements in physics but also his great spirits.
Hawking was born in England on January 8th, 1942. When he was a child, he was interested in science. In 1959, he entered Oxford University to study natural science. With the help of the book, young learners around the world found great passion (热情) for physics.
In addition to his scientific work, Hawking was a passionate advocate (提倡者) for space exploration and environmental protection. He believed that humans must colonize (在……开拓殖民地) other planets to ensure our survival in the future.
Even though Hawking was physically disabled, he didn’t stop teaching, researching, or inspiring others. Long ago, people found that light could go through a small hole in a dark room or a box and make a picture on the wall inside. This was called the “camera obscura”, which means “dark room”. Artists used it to help them draw things more easily. However, this picture couldn’t be kept; it would disappear (消失) when the light was gone.
The big change happened in the 19th century. A man named Joseph Nicéphore Niépce wanted to keep the picture made by light. In 1826, he used a special material on a metal (金属) plate and put it inside a camera obscura. After many hours, he made the first real photo that didn’t disappear in a short time. It was not clear, but it was a great start.
Later, another person named Louis Daguerre made the process better and faster. His way, called the daguerreotype (银版照相法), became very popular. People could finally have their pictures taken!
After that, cameras kept improving. George Eastman made a camera called the “Kodak” in1888. It was small and easy for everyone to use. People could take pictures of their families, trips, and happy moments.
Then, in the 20th century, digital (数码的) cameras were invented. They don’t need film. Pictures can be seen right away on a screen and saved on a computer.
The invention of the camera changed our world. It helps us record important events, learn about different places, and share our stories with others. From a simple dark room to the digital cameras we use today, it is truly an amazing journey.

Sugar painting is a traditional folk art that is very popular in Chengdu, China. You can often see folk artists making sugar paintings along the streets or in parks. Many people are fascinated by these paintings, and the artists are also well-loved by the public.
According to some studies, sugar painting began during the Ming Dynasty. People used sugar paintings to show respect to the gods. The skills of making sugar paintings improved, and the designs became more varied (多变的). Many of the patterns represented good luck, such as fish and dragons.
Sugar painting is very different from regular painting. First, because the sugar is hot and can harden quickly when it cools down, the artist must work very fast. Second, the artist has to carefully follow specific steps and draw continuous lines to form pictures of animals or other objects. To master sugar painting, the artist first practices regular painting to get familiar with the technique. Over time, the style of sugar paintings has evolved. Artists now use tools like bronze spoons and shovels, and instead of paper, they use marble slabs.
Although there are fewer sugar painters today, sugar painting has become an important part of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. It has attracted attention from people all over the world, and artists have performed amazing sugar painting shows in countries like Spain, Germany, and Singapore.

It was early morning. Peter Corbett helped Mark Wellman out of his wheelchair (轮椅) and onto the ground. They stood before El Capitan, a huge rock almost 1.2 kilometers high. Mark dreamed to climb El Capitan when he was a child. At the age of 21, he fell while climbing a mountain and lost his legs. But he never lost his love for life.
Mark knew he couldn’t finish the climb alone, but his friend Peter would be there to give a helping hand. They thought it would take seven days to reach the top. Now Peter Corbett climbed about 30 meters up and hit a piton (岩钉) into the rock. Fastening (拴紧) one end of a 50 meter rope to the piton, he let the other end of the rope fall down. Mark caught the rope and fastened it to his belt. He next reached above his head and fastened a T bar (丁字铁) to the rope. Mark took a deep breath, pushed the T bar up almost as far as his arms could reach, and began the first pull up. High above, Peter let out a cheer. You’re on your way.
For the first four days the two men progressed upward (向上) without accident. But on the fifth day, a very strong wind began to blow, making it hard for Mark to hold on to his rope. But Mark kept on pushing up the T bar and pulling himself up.
It took them one day more than they had expected. But as the two heads appeared, the group of people waiting on the top went wild with joy.
