Dear David,
I find it hard to have common topics (话题) with my classmates. I tried to fit in by asking or searching the topics online, but they still don’t want to tell me why they are laughing. This makes me feel bad. What can I do?
—Jenny
Hi Jenny,
I’m sorry you’re feeling left out. Have you tried telling your classmates it’s making you feel bad? The thing is, even if you find out what they’re laughing about, you might not find it funny yourself. And that’s OK. We’re all different. Don’t worry too much about “fitting in” or knowing everything.
You can still enjoy being with your classmates without understanding every joke. Humor (幽默), especially for young people, can be really random (随机的). What’s funny for some may just not work for others.
You can also try sharing the things you are more interested in. Maybe leading some topics will be better than trying to join in with ones you are not really into that much.
But it’s also OK to just be your own person. In fact, that’s a good thing. I have a saying in life that I learned from my grandma, and that’s “nod, grin(笑嘴笑), and do your own thing”. This means you can get on with others, but you don’t have to follow or copy them.
—David

The time - eating monster

Our grasslands, forests and fields are all green. That’s my favourite colour. It means hope because it is the colour of life. But green is not just the colour of nature now. Trains are running through the plateau. They are this beautiful colour, too.
