When my family first landed in Perth, Australia, at the start of January, it was 40℃. On our very first evening in Perth, we watched as the sun set over the West Coast while eating watermelon by the sea. Not all of my memories were quite so pleasant, however. I was soon enrolled in kindergarten. While most kids would have been excited about going to their first big day of school, I was terrified because I couldn’t even introduce myself or say hello in English.
Then I met Natsumi.
Her family had just migrated to Australia from Japan. Unable to speak a word of English, we could only communicate with each other through body language, but this did not stop us from becoming close friends. My mom has a clear memory of one car trip when Natsumi and I were sitting in the backseat, giggling and whispering to each other in English. It was the first time I felt confident enough to speak the few words I had learned throughout the year.
Unfortunately, at the end of that year, Natsumi’s family moved to Queensland and mine to New South Wales. Unintentionally, we lost touch.
After my graduation from university, I went into training as an EAL/D teacher, teaching English to newly arrived secondary students. Between 2014 and 2018, many of my students were Japanese, which reminded me of Natsumi. I had long been searching for her, but in vain.
On a visit to Japan in 2018, I picked up the trail again. Having spent a long night online, I came across someone named Natsumi.
Taking a final gamble, I sent her a message. The next day, there was a reply: “Oh my god! Gabi? Gabi from Perth?”
It turned out that Natsumi was still living in Queensland, but she would be visiting Sydney the week after I returned from Japan. We agreed on a date and met up for dinner. Seeing her again for the first time — more than 25 years since our last meeting — was incredible. However, there was one huge difference. This time, we were not only able to communicate with one another in English, but fluently so.
41. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 1?
A. She spoke better English when in her hometown.
B. She found it hard to adapt to the climate of Australia.
C. She considered her peers in the kindergarten terrifying.
D. She might encounter language problems in the kindergarten.
42. What does the author want to show by mentioning her mom’s memory?
A. No reason was needed for friendship between kids.
B. Friendship with Natsumi made her more confident.
C. Natsumi was so agreeable that her mom liked Natsumi a lot.
D. She and Natsumi were close because they spoke English well at that time.
43. The author got in touch with Natsumi again after years by ______.
A. an accidental finding online B. a visit to Japan
C. her mom’s help D. her student’s clue
44. Why does the author mention the huge difference in the last paragraph?
A. To prove a lasting friendship has great power. B. To stress it is important to learn English well.
C. To show they two have grown a lot after years. D. To imply something has changed between them.
45. How did the author feel after meeting Natsumi again?
A. Disappointed that they couldn’t communicate well.
B. Overwhelmed with joy and surprise at the reunion.
C. Indifferent to the changes that had occurred in Natsumi.
D Unsatisfied with the way their dinner conversation went.

Oysters (牡蛎) are enjoyed as delicious dishes worldwide. More than that, they are also “ecosystem engineers”. Facing a declining local oyster population, a group in New York began its “Billion Oyster Project (BOP)” to restore this natural resource, with this year marking its 10th anniversary, reported the BBC.
Oysters help clean the water by removing pollutants like nitrogen (氮), which can cause too much algae (藻类) to grow. “Oysters’ filtration capacity can help the whole ecosystem,” Carrie Roble, an ecologist, told the BBC.
As young oysters gather on shells and grow up over generations, they construct reefs that provide habitats for hundreds of species, creating a lively underwater city of marine (海洋的) life.
Oyster reefs also protect coastlines by acting as natural storm barriers, lessening the impact of large waves and reducing flooding and erosion.
To help restore oyster reefs, the BOP project places oyster babies into rivers in metal cages filled with empty shells and artificial reef balls, using donated shells from restaurants as key materials. These shells offer the necessary hard surface and calcium carbonate (碳酸钙) for young oysters to settle and eventually create an oyster reef.
Thanks to these efforts, more than 140 million oysters have been restored over the past 10 years in the New York City Harbor, and 18 active restoration sites and field stations have been built. The waterways surrounding New York are now the cleanest they’ve been in over 100 years, according to BOP.
However, when counting oysters, it’s difficult to tell if they are restored or drifted there. Baby oysters float for two weeks before settling on a hard surface, requiring extra lab work to trace their origins. “I am very anxious to find out how many came from the restoration oysters,” Professor Matt Hare from Cornell University, who is involved in the project, told the BBC.
What’s more, mud from erosion makes growing oysters more difficult by covering their growth surfaces. The use of nutrient-rich chemicals also leads to algae overgrowth, which reduces oxygen levels.
Other than New York, oyster restoration projects in various countries and regions like Bangladesh, Australia and China’s Hong Kong SAR are also underway. Each project has its unique focus including crosion, storms and water quality.
As for BOP, the group is on track to meet its 1-billion oyster goal by 2035, reported Science Line.
46. What is the primary goal of the Billion Oyster Project?
A. To serve oysters in restaurants.
B. To create new species of oysters.
C. To reduce nitrogen levels in the water.
D. To restore the natural oyster population.
47. Why are oysters considered “ecosystem engineers”?
A. They help reduce certain water pollutants.
B. They remove microplastics from water.
C. They eat harmful chemical substances.
D. They stop algae from growing.
48. What can be learned about oyster reefs from Paragraph 3?
A. They are formed in a short time.
B. They rely heavily on other species.
C They move along with ocean currents.
D. They create settlements for other marine life.
49. How does the BOP project help restore oyster reefs?
A. By removing pollutants like nitrogen.
B. By providing habitats for baby oysters.
C. By releasing mature oysters into the sea.
D. By adding calcium carbonate to oyster shells.
50. What is a challenge facing the BOP project?
A. The lack of labs to do work in.
B. The slow growth of baby oysters.
C. Counting and identifying oysters.
D. Oyster overpopulation due to fertilizer use.
D
Playing a musical instrument throughout: your life protects your hearing in old age, a Canadian study suggests. The study, published in Psychology and Aging, carried out hearing tests on 74 adult musicians and 89 non-musicians. It found a 70-year-old musician’s hearing was as good as that of a 50-year-old who did not play.
Hearing normally declines as people age. By 60, 10-30% of people have moderate hearing loss. By 80, that goes up to as many as 60%. Problems are particularly seen in the central auditory (听觉的) processing system, which is associated with understanding speech, especially when there is background noise.
Previous studies have shown musicians have better hearing than non-players. But this research, by a team at the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto, looked at adults of all ages - from 18 to 91 - to see how people were affected as they aged. They carried out hearing tests on 74 amateur and professional musicians (who had played since the age of 16, were still practising and had been given formal music lessons) and 89 non-musicians (who had never played an instrument). Musicians were significantly better at picking out speech against noise.
The researchers suggest that lifelong musicianship reduces age-related changes in the brain, probably due to musicians using their auditory systems at a high level on a regular basis.
The head of biomedical research at Action on Hearing Loss, Dr Ralph Holme, said: “While this study suggests that musicians might be more able to cope with the consequences of hearing loss, it is far better to reduce damage in the first place by using appropriate ear protection. We have always campaingned for everyone who plays a musical instrument or listens to loud music to wear hearing protection, like earplugs, which reduce the risk of damaging your hearing permanently.”
51. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. A person aged 80 will lose 30% hearing.
B. A person aged above 60 must have bad hearing.
C. People have fewer problems with background noise.
D. People’s hearing usually becomes worse when they get older.
52. What can we get from the Canadian study?
A. It tested the hearing of 162 people.
B. The finding of the study wasn’t published publicly.
C. Playing a musical instrument may do good to hearing.
D. Musicians were as good at picking out speech against noise as non-musicians.
53. Why don’t musicians change much in their brain as they age?
A. They like to take more exercise.
B. They use their hearing more and regularly.
C. They don’t expose themselves to background noise.
D. They pay more attention to protecting their hearing.
54. How can we deal with hearing loss according to Dr Ralph Holme?
A. Get help from musicians.
B. Listen to loud music less.
C. Protect hearing properly.
D. Play a musical instrument more.
55. The author wrote the passage to ________.
A. entertain the readers
B. advertise a musical instrument
C. complain about people’s hearing loss
D. inform readers of a research on hearing

五、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
What is the hottest topic at your school recently? In a high school in our city, it’s making money.
The school held an activity called “Making Money” last weekend. About 200 Junior 1 and Junior 2 students were divided into 30 teams. They went out to make money by selling things. What did they choose to sell? Some sold newspapers; some chose bottled water; some sold environmentally friendly shopping bags and bamboo baskets.
Hu Qing’s team decided to sell some useful books in front of the Children Activity Center. They thought parents would like to buy the books for their children. But unfortunately, they met urban management officers. The officers asked them to leave. “We played hide-and-seek with the officers for the whole morning,” said Hu. “Finally we had to give up.”
Wang Bing and her team sold ice cream in a square. They didn’t meet any officers. But few people were interested in what they were selling. The team then put up a board saying “For Country Kids”. It worked. More people came to their stall (小摊). An old lady even gave them 100 yuan. “She didn’t want any change. She said she wanted to help the children,” said Wang. “We were touched.” Later that day they gave the 100 yuan and more to the “Charity Organization” office. They felt proud that they did a bit of fundraising.
Meng Zhaoxiang and his team were luckier. They sold all their cakes in four hours, spending 39.5 yuan and getting back 80 yuan. They made 40.5 yuan. “It was not easy to make the money,” said Meng. “Some people just looked. Others just tasted but didn’t buy. Now I know how hard it is for our parents to make the money we need to lead a happy life.”
So every job has its share of frustration and challenges; to do well you must learn to deal with it.

D. Unsatisfied with the way their dinner conversation went.
【答案】41. D 42. B 43. A 44. C 45. B

A. They are formed in a short time.
B. They rely heavily on other species.
C. They move along with ocean currents.
D. They create settlements for other marine life.
49. How does the BOP project help restore oyster reefs?
A. By removing pollutants like nitrogen.
B. By providing habitats for baby oysters.

【49题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段“To help restore oyster reefs, the BOP project places oyster babies into rivers in metal cages filled with empty shells and artificial reef balls, using donated shells from restaurants as key materials. These shells offer the necessary hard surface and calcium carbonate (碳酸钙) for young oysters to settle and eventually create an oyster reef.(为助力恢复牡蛎礁,“十亿牡蛎计划”将牡蛎幼体放入装有空贝壳和人造礁球的金属笼中,再置于河流里,其中餐厅捐赠的贝壳是关键材料。这些贝壳为幼年牡蛎提供了必需的坚硬表面和碳酸钙,便于它们附着生长,最终形成牡蛎礁。)”可知,BOP项目将牡蛎幼体放入装有空贝壳和人造礁球的金属笼中,这些为牡蛎幼体提供了栖息地,从而帮助恢复牡蛎礁。故选B。
【50题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第七段“However, when counting oysters, it’s difficult to tell if they are restored or drifted there. Baby oysters float for two weeks before settling on a hard surface, requiring extra lab work to trace their origins.(然而,在统计牡蛎数量时,很难判断它们是人工恢复,还是自然漂流至此。牡蛎幼体在附着到坚硬表面之前,会在水中漂浮两周,这就需要额外的实验室工作来追溯其来源。)”可知,统计牡蛎数量以及辨别它们是人工恢复的还是自然漂流来的是一个挑战。故选C。

第Ⅱ卷(非选择题共35分)
