My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and announced, “Get up, you’re going with me to cut the grass in the garden.”
The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and excited. From sunup to sundown, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden. By the end of the day, I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his business. I got 6 dollars for my work that day.
One day, my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside.” Take away these leaves !” he said, “and don’t make me have to tell you to do it again.” The message was clear. Today I value the importance of doing a job well the first time. It will never fail to impress (给……留下印象) the person you are working for.
Two years later, my father told me and my brother that we were old enough to cut the grass by ourselves. Every Saturday, we set off early in the morning and wished to get some money from our father.
Looking after the garden was neither exciting nor high paying, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job was a good job and that whatever I was paid was more than I had before.
A newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay. “If you’re only thinking about hard work and money, you probably don’t want to do any better than you are doing.” I answered. In every job, from cutting the grass to washing the dishes, I’ve learned much. If you work hard enough, you can learn from any job you do.

28.What happened when the writer was sixteen?
A.His brother had to go to the garden with his father every day.
B.He went to the garden early once a week with his brother.
C.He could get more money from his father than his brother.
D.He still couldn’t change anything about himself.
29.How did the writer feel about his work in the garden?
A.It made his father happy. B.It made the flowers grow better.
C.It made him be a better person. D.It helped his father save more money.

Scientists in Switzerland have used lasers (激光) to change the path (路线) of a lightning (闪电) strike (攻击). The experiment suggests that in the future, lasers might be useful for protecting large buildings from lightning.
Lightning can be very powerful and cause serious problems on the ground. Lightning strike can cause fires, destroy buildings, and even kill people. The damage (损害) from lightning costs billions of dollars every year. In the US, lightning strikes killed close to 450 people between 2006 and 2021.
Scientists have been trying to find a way to protect buildings from lightning for a long time. Now the best way is by putting metal rods (竿) on the buildings. These rods are connected to the ground. The lightning is attracted (吸引) to the rods, which safely guide the electricity into the ground. But lightning rods can only protect a small area. Some buildings—such as airports are so large that it’s difficult to protect the whole building using lightning rods.
Another idea is to use lasers to guide lightning. Scientists had been working on the idea for over 20 years. Using a powerful laser that can fire about 1,000 times a second, scientists in Switzerland were able to guide lightning strikes for 164 feet. The heat from the laser creates a path of air that is less thick than the air around it. The path also has a special charge (电荷). The lightning can follow this path almost as if it were a lightning rod. Scientist Matteo Clerici said, “The fact that we managed to do it in an outdoor environment is a very big step.”
But the laser still didn’t guide the lightning as far as the scientists would like. Besides, the laser is also very expensive. Scientists say it cost about $2 billion. It will probably take 10 or more years before a laser like this is truly able to protect large buildings.
31.What did the scientists use the laser for?
A.Changing the path of lightning. B.Protecting the lightning rod.
C.Reducing the heat of lightning. D.Slowing down the speed of lightning.
32.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The use of the laser. B.The cost of the laser.
C.The power of lightning. D.The way to guide lightning.
33.What is the disadvantage (缺点) of lightning rods?
A.Their material is expensive. B.They have short service life.
C.Their speed of guiding electricity is low. D.It’s not easy for them to protect large areas.
34.What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A.The laser works better in a lab.
B.The technology has yet to be perfected.
C.The scientists think poorly of the lightning rod.
D.The research result will soon do good to humans.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Use Lasers to Stop Lightning. B.Lightning Rods Are Out of Date.
C.Guide Lightning With a Laser. D.Lightning Can Be Used to Serve People.

Because of busy lifestyles and work stress, more Chinese people are now turning to AI tools like DeepSeek to talk about their problems. They share feelings with the chatbot and receive warm advice. This practice, known as “AI therapy (疗愈),” is becoming popular online. But can robots really replace human therapists?
Around the world, 45 percent of people who needed mental health care in 2024 did not get it because it was too expensive or there weren't enough doctors, according to Huntington Psychological Services. Daniel Lowd, an associate professor at the University of Oregon, believes AI could help fill this gap. “If people can find some support and ideas by talking to ChatGPT or chatbot, then I think that's wonderful,” Lowd told Newsweek. Li Yong, a doctor at the Jiangsu Province Hospital, agreed with Lowd, saying that AI meets people’ s basic needs for emotional support to a point.
However, AI has its limits (限制). Human therapists understand feelings deeply through face-to-face talks and create suitable treatment plans— something robots can't fully copy. Dr. LiuYang, a Beijing-based psychologist (心理学家), notes “An AI might recognize keywords like ‘divorce’ or ‘layoff’, but it cannot find out small emotional shifts in tone or body language”. This point becomes important when dealing with a series of situations, where misunderstandings could be dangerous.
Another problem is safety. AI might act like a therapist without proper training or rules. It cannot match the level of responsibility that human therapists have. Experts believe the key to safe AI therapy is strict government control. For example, Wysa, an AI mental health app, follows strict medical standards in the UK.
Data privacy appears as another large concern (担忧). Users usually share personal details on AI platforms, yet few companies clearly state how this information is stored or used. In 2024, a major Chinese mental health app faced criticism when users found their chats were being analyzed for advertising algorithms (算法).
As AI becomes part of daily life, finding a balance between its benefits and risks is important. While AI offers quick help, human connection remains irreplaceable for serious emotional needs.
36.What makes people turn to “AI therapy”?
A.AI therapy is warmer. B.AI tools are free. C.People feel much pressure. D.DeepSeek is popular.
37.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Mental health care. B.The AI tool. C.The medical standard. D.The government control.
38.What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A.AI therapy is nicer and cheaper than human therapists.
B.AI robots will soon replace human therapists in hospitals.
C.AI can perfectly copy human therapists’ skills and methods.
D.AI has limits in understanding deep emotions and safety risks.
39.Why does the writer mention the Wysa app?
A.To give an example of safe AI under rules. B.To prove robots can deal with emergencies.
C.To show AI is cheaper than human doctors. D.To explain why China needs more therapists.
40.What can we infer from the passage?
A.AI therapy will completely replace human therapists.
B.AI is useful for basic support but not for serious cases.
C.AI can create specialized treatment plans for people.
D.Government control is really unnecessary for AI apps.
【答案】36.C 37.A 38.D 39.A 40.B

In the modern world it’s easy to travel. Planes take 66 (we) across oceans in less than a day. We speed between cities in cars, buses, and trains. We are so used to traveling 67 this that we don’t often think about it. However, in the past, people had to deal with many difficulties 68 (get) around. Transportation (交通运输) has changed a lot in the last 100 years.
Before cars people rode in carriages (马车) pulled by horses. In fact, cars were first called “horseless carriages.” The first car 69 (make) in 1672, but it used a steam engine (蒸汽发动机) and didn’t go very fast at all. Cars didn’t become popular until the 1900’s. Nowadays cars 70 (main) use gas and electric-powered engines. They are much faster and also 71 (dangerous) than before! The first aircraft wasn’t a plane. It was a balloon. In 1783 a hot air balloon 72 (carry) a person through the sky for the first time. It was amazing, but it wasn’t very practical. The balloon went wherever the wind blew it.
The Wright brothers flew the first airplane in 1903. It had wooden propellers (螺旋桨) 73 flew 120 feet. It was a great feat (壮举). Their 74 (succeed) let the world know that controlled flight was possible.
Air travel has come a long way since the Wright brothers. We send people to 75 moon in rockets; airplanes carry hundreds of people at once; hang-gliders fly through the sky freely. And we still have big dreams. For early people, space-flight was just a dream but we did it. Maybe our modern dreams are possible too!

26.What did the writer’s father ask him to do in the garden?
A.He asked him to cut the grass. B.He asked him to look after his brother.
C.He asked him to make some money. D.He asked him to take care of himself.
27.Why was the writer told to clean the leaves again?
A.Because his brother was too young to take them away. B.Because his father didn’t like him at all.
C.Because his father wanted to give him a lesson. D.Because his father can’t do that alone.
30.What does the writer want to remind us?
A.It’s important to start learning at a young age. B.Hard work leads us to learn from anything.
