A new and exciting invention now helps deaf people to see conversations in real time. Using augmented reality (AR) glasses and a smartphone, deaf and hearing-impaired people are also able to join in everyday conversations.
The AR glasses were developed by Dan Scarfe after he had dinner with his family. The man saw his hearing-impaired grandfather sitting alone in silence while the rest of the family were talking excitedly. This reminded him of his grandfather who was always watching TV shows with subtitles (字幕). Because of this experience, he realized that he should do something to help.
Scarfe got to work with an AR glasses maker. Six months later, a new pair of AR glasses came out.
The glasses first receive the audio (音频) and send it to a connected smartphone. ▲ . With the help of software, these subtitles appear on the user’s glasses screen.
The company first tested the glasses in the UK. The UK was chosen as a testing ground because over 12 million adults in Britain have hearing loss (失聪). However, when the product goes global, it could change the lives of some 430 million people. This is about 5% of the world's population and includes 70 million people with total hearing loss.
This is a game changer for the deaf. Mark Atkinson, who is using the AR glasses, says, “As a deaf person, this new technology is a surprise for me. When I tried on the glasses for the first time, I was so excited. Real-time subtitles made me become part of the conversation as never before.”
24.Who is the new invention helpful for?
A.Workers with writing problems. B.Teenagers with reading problems.
C.People with hearing problems. D.Grandparents with speech problems.
25.Which of the following can be put into the ▲ in Paragraph 4?
A.The phone then creates subtitles from that audio.
B.The users can then read conversations easily.
C.The phone changes the audio into pictures.
D.This technology helps people communicate at work places.
26.What is the right order according to the passage?
a. The company tested the AR glasses.
b. A new pair of AR glasses came out.

①The sun sets in a field in southern England. When it rises again the following morning, that field has been changed into a huge work of art. A large part of the crops has been pressed into a pattern of circles (圆形), squares (方形) and other shapes.
②Farmers have reported finding strange circles in their fields for centuries. The earliest mention of a crop circle dates back to the 1500s. Crop circles, however, didn’t get attention until 1980. When a farmer in England discovered three circles in his field, the world first began to learn about crop circles.
③By the 1990s, crop circles had become something of a tourist attraction. In 1990 alone, more than 500 circles appeared in Europe. Within the next few years, there were thousands.
④Crop circles can come in many different shapes, changing in size. Most early crop circles were simple. But after 1990, the circles have changed. Crops can be made to look like just about anything—smiling faces, flowers or even words.
⑤People have long been wondering who or what is creating these crop circles. Possibly the most widely known idea is that crop circles are the work of visitors from other planets.
⑥Probably the most scientific opinion says that crop circles are created by vortices (旋涡). They force (迫使) the air down to the ground, which presses the crops down. There is something similar which is thought to be caused by vortices. Dr. Terence Meaden, an expert, says when the dust (尘土) gets caught up in a vortex, it can appear to glow (发光), which may explain the UFO-like glowing lights many people have seen.
28.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By telling a story. B.By asking a question.
C.By giving a comparison (对比). D.By describing a scene.
29.Which of the following is TRUE about crop circles in the passage?
A.The first crop circle in history was found in 1980.
B.Crop circles attracted a large number of tourists as early as the 1500s.
C.Before 1990, most crop circles had simple shapes like circles.
D.The number of crop circles was always small until the 21st century.
30.Which point do you think Dr. Terence Meaden would agree with?
A.Crop circles may be man-made.
B.Crop circles could be marks left by aliens.
C.The UFO-like light could be caused by dust.
D.Vortices are sure to create perfectly shaped crop circles.
31.Which of the following would be the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
D
British schoolgirl Lowri Moore is just 13 years old. But she has done a lot for other kids who wear glasses like her. She’s worked to make them feel more included.
She says many people believe that children being stigmatized (被歧视) for wearing glasses is a thing of the past. But she thinks many children don’t want to wear their glasses because they’re afraid of looking “different or uncool.” Study also shows children with glasses are over 35 percent more likely (可能的) to be hated at school.
When she was 9 years old, she wrote a letter to the Disney. Lowri asked Disney to show more characters (人物) with glasses in its movies. This got Disney to make its first hero that wore glasses. Two years later, the movie “Encanto” came out. And it had the glasses-wearing character Mirabel Madrigal. Jared Bush is the director of “Encanto”. He said the schoolgirl’s letter gave him the idea to make such a glasses-wearing character. The director also said he had wanted to let her know much earlier, but had to keep it secret until the movie was on.
Now, Lowri has a new project. It is about letting people put glasses on emojis (表情包). Instead of writing something out, people use an emoji. Many emojis are cartoon faces.
Lowri’s mom gave her the idea for her new project. She wanted to find an emoji that looked like Lowri. She only found three emojis with glasses. They were a nerd (书呆子), a teacher and a grandma. These emojis made it look like wearing glasses isn’t for kids or isn’t very cool.
Many kids don’t want to wear glasses, Lowri said. They may think they look nerdy. “But if you need glasses to see, you need to wear them. If you can’t see, you won’t be able to learn,” she said.
Now Lowri has written a letter to the Unicode Consortium, a group in charge of (负责) all new emojis. She asked the group to design more emojis with glasses.
Earlier this year, she got an award (奖) from the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) because of her project. Jessica Thompson who works for the IAPB said Lowri has worked hard to show how important it is for kids to wear glasses if they need them. If they don’t wear glasses, they can get eye problems. Also, glasses help kids do well in school. “If you try hard to see, you try hard to learn,” Thompson said.
32.The writer mentioned (提及) the movie “Encanto” in Paragraph 3 to ________.
A.introduce a new Disney movie B.show Disney accepted Lowri’s idea
C.introduce a lovely cartoon character D.show characters with glasses are cooler
33.What does the underlined word “director” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.演员 B.导演 C.记者 D.摄像
34.Which of the following words can best describe Lowri’s new project?
A.Boring. B.Awful. C.Useful. D.Perfect.
35.Why did Lowri do a lot for the kids with glasses?
A.Because more and more kids have eye problems.
B.Because she wanted to get an award from IAPB.
C.Because many children like looking different and cool.
D.Because she wants to make kids with glasses feel more included.

Make good use of your time in class.
38 Really listening in class means less work late. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly.
When you get home from school, go over your notes. Prepare for lessons before class and try to know what the teacher is going to discuss the next day. Do read that material.
Develop a good attitude about tests.
The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. It helps you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.

Iron girl
During the 2021 Shanghai Fashion Week, a young, slim and confident woman with an iron leg drew everyone’s attention. Her name was Niu Yu. She lost her right leg in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. She was only 11 years old then.
Niu Yu used to be in the school sports team. She loved running. But the disaster broke her dream. She had to live with an artificial leg. It wasn’t comfortable, and her leg often bled. People’s curious eyes made her even more uncomfortable. She always tried to hide her leg under jeans or dresses.
With the support of her family and friends, Niu Yu slowly came out of the shadows. In 2018, right before her 21st birthday, she decided to stop hiding her leg. To her surprise, she received lots of encouraging words. She also finished a half marathon in about 4 hours. She completed the hard 10-year journey of finding herself again.
Now Niu Yu shares her story on social media. She listens to disaster survivors and encourages them to look forward. In 2023, she carried the torch at the FISU World University Games. “It is a great honour for me,” she said, “But it is also a good chance to show people the power of being brave.”
A disaster can bring wounds and pain. But we should always face them with courage. As the writer Nora Ephron once said: “Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.”
40.What happened to Niu Yu in 2008?
41.How long did it take Niu Yu to find herself again?
42.What did Niu Yu do at the 2023 FISU World University Games?

Chopsticks are simple and helpful. Chopsticks have been a big part of Chinese food culture for a long time. Let’s read and learn more about 44 (they).
The 45 (one) pair of chopsticks was invented over 5,000 years ago. It is said that Dayu, 46 ancient Chinese leader, invented them. At that time, there was a flood in China. Yu was very worried and wanted to control the flood. So he ate his meals as 47 (quick) as possible to save more time. But the meat in the pot was too hot to eat with his hands. Then he used two 48 (branch) to help him hold the meat.

Chopsticks are a symbol of Chinese culture. More and more foreigners try to use chopsticks. However, they may have trouble 51 (eat) food with only two sticks.

The government should take action to prevent the air pollution. People should go to work by underground or on foot instead of by car. What’s more, we can plant more trees in our neighbourhood.
I hope I can get the chance to help protect the environment.
Yours faithfully,
David
