Ⅳ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
A year ago August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift — $7,000,a legacy (遗产) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch, who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were going under financially.” says Dave.
But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches’ generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in other, it was more than $100,000.
It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $3million — they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.
Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving, They thrived on (喜欢) comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase .
Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn’t afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked you needed anything,” says their friend Sand Van Weelden, “They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.”
Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy — a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents — should enrich the whole community (社区) and Ish and Arlene Hatch’s story.

For a while, my neighborhood was taken ever by an army of joggers(慢跑者). They were there all the time: early morning, noon, and evening. There were little old ladies in gray sweats, young couples in Adidas shoes, middle-aged men with red faces. “Come on!” My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. “You’ll feel great.”
Well, I had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. Based on my experience, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, and judging from the number of the people who left our neighborhood jogging army. I’m not alone in my opinion.
First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet a real pounding(追击)ruining down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesn’t kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me.
Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes isn’t my idea of fun. Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers say, “I love being out there with just my thoughts” Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt.
And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasn’t just the first week: it was practically every day for two months. I never got past the pain level, and pain isn’t fun. What a cruel way to do it! So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly, so why jog?
I don’t jog any more, and I don’t think I ever will. I’m walking two miles three times a week at a fast pace, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. I’m getting exercise, and I’m enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and I’ve found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.
41. From the first paragraph, we learn that in the writer’s neighborhood ______.

At a certain time in our lives, we consider every place as the possible sites for a house. I have thus searched the country within a dozen miles of where I live. In imagination I have bought all the farms, one after another, and I knew their prices.
The nearest thing that I came to actual ownership was when I bought the Hollowell place. But before the owner completed the sale with me, his wife changed her mind and wished to keep it, and he offered me additional dollars to return the farm to him. However, I let him keep the additional dollars and sold him the farm for just what I gave for it.
The real attraction of the Hollowell farm to me were its position, being about two miles from the village, half a mile from the nearest neighbor, bounded on one side by the river, and separated from the highway by a wide field. The poor condition of the house and fences showed that it hadn’t been used for some time. I remembered from my earliest trip up the river that the house used to be hidden behind a forest area, and I was in a hurry to buy it before the owner finished getting out some rocks, cutting down the apples trees, and clearing away some young trees which had grown up in the fields. I wanted to buy it before he made any more of his improvements. But it turned out as I have said.
I was not really troubled by the loss. I had always had a garden, but I don’t think I was ready for a large farm. I believe that as long as possible it is better to live free and uncommitted. It makes but little difference whether you own a farm or not.
46. What do we know about the author?
A. He wanted to buy the oldest farm near where he lived.
B. He made a study of many farms before buying.

47. Why did the author decide to buy the Hollowell place?
A. It was of good market value. B. It was next to the highway.
C. It was in a good position. D. It was behind a nice garden.
48. Why did the author want to buy the farm in a hurry?
A. He was afraid the owner might change his mind. B. He hoped to enlarge the forest on the farm.
C. He wanted to keep the farm as it was. D. He was eager to become a farm owner.
49. The underlined words “the loss” in the last paragraph refer to ___.
A. the money the author lost in buying the farm B. the sale of the garden in the Hollowell place
C. the removal of the trees around the house D. the failure to possess the Hollowell place
50. What does the author believe as important in life?
A. To own a farm. B. To satisfy his needs.
C. To be free from worries. D. To live in the countryside.

V.阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
My name is Clara. I still remember that chilly December day, sitting in science class. I’d finished a worksheet early and picked up a Time for Kids magazine. A piece of news caught my eye. NASA was holding an essay contest to name its Mars rover (火星探测器). Before I even knew anything else about it, a single word flooded my 11-year-old mind: Curiosity.
I couldn’t wait for the bell to ring so I could get started on my essay. That afternoon, I raced home, sat down at the computer, and typed until my fingers ached. “Curiosity is an everlasting flame that burns in everyone’s mind…”
Five months later, my mom received a phone call, and immediately, a wide smile spread across her face.
On August 5, 2012, at 10:31 p.m., the rover named Curiosity touched down safely on the surface of Mars, and I was honored to have a front-row seat in NASA.
Curiosity is such an important part of who I am. I have always been fascinated by the stars, the planets, the sky and the universe. I remember as a little girl, my grandmother and I would sit together in the backyard for hours. She’d tell me stories and point out the stars. Grandma lived in China, thousands of miles away from my home in Kansas, but the stars kept us together even when we were apart. They were always there, yet there was so much I didn’t know about them. That’s what I love so much about space.
People often ask me why we go to faraway places like Mars. My answer is simple because we’re curious. We human beings do not just hole up in one place. We are constantly wondering and trying to find out what’s over the hill and beyond the horizon.
51. How did Clara get the news about the essay contest? (no more than 10 words)
52. Why did Clara have a front-row seat in NASA? (no more than 10 words)
53. What does Clara remember about the time spent with Grandma? (no more than 15 words)
54. What does the underlined phrase “hole up” mean? (1 word)
55. In your opinion, why is curiosity important? (no more than 20 words)
【答案】51. By reading a Time for Kids magazine. Or: From a Time for Kids magazine
52. She won the essay contest held by NASA. Or: She named the Mars rover “Curiosity”. Or: “Curiosity” was chosen as the name of the Mars rover.
53. She sat together with Grandma listening to her stories about stars. Or: Her grandma told her stories about stars. Or: They sat together talking about stars.
54. Stay/Remain/Live/Hide
55. Curiosity is important because it leads to discovery or inventions. Or: With curiosity, we keep asking questions and exploring the world unknown. Or: Curiosity drives us through our lives so that we never stop wondering about the things beyond our knowledge.

【答案】Dear Chris,
What you see in the video clip is all true. Technology is indeed everywhere in our life.
Every day, I go to school by subway. I pay the fare with my mobile phone. In my school, every classroom is equipped with a big touch screen, so we don’t use blackboards anymore. If I need books for study, I will do shopping online. With a simple click, the books will be delivered to my door the next day. During holidays, my family usually go traveling by high speed train, which carries us to our destinations with speed and comfort.
If you have the chance to come to China, you can see for yourself. You will be amazed by the fact that Chinese people are so at ease with technology.
Best regards,
Li Jin

Neighbors helping neighbors — that was Ish and Arlene Hatch’s story.

A. worked in a school cafeteria B. were in financial difficulty

C. They left the family farm to live in an old house
D. They helped their neighbors to find jobs
38. Why would the Hatches routinely go from store to store?
A. They decided to open a store B. They wanted to save money
C. They couldn’t afford expensive things D. They wanted to buy gifts for local kids
39. According to Sand Van Weelden, the Hatches were
A. understanding B. optimistic C. childlike D. curious
40. What can we learn from the text?
A. The community of Alto was poor
B. The summer camp was attractive to the parents
C. Sandy Van Weelden got a legacy from the Hatches
D. The Hatches would like the neighbors to follow their example

I had always had a garden but I don’t think I was ready for a large farm. I believe that as long as possible it is better to live free and uncommitted. It makes but little difference whether you own a farm or not.
