Wildfires swept across Los Angeles for weeks last month. About a week after the fires broke out, planes began to drop seawater on them. Many wondered why seawater wasn’t used at the beginning since L.A. is a coastal (沿海的) city. Here are reasons.
There are two main useful ways to send seawater to a fire, but both of them are very hard. One way is to 28 . This takes a lot of time and work. The other way is to use planes. They must hover (盘旋) close to the sea to fill their water tanks. This can be dangerous.
Most firefighting machine is made from metals, like iron (铁). Seawater can react with these metals and make it rust (生锈) more quickly. This can 29 .
Seawater can change the soil and harm the environment. Plants get water through their roots. The salt level in the soil is usually lower than that in plant roots. This allows water to move from the soil into the cells. However, seawater can add a lot of salt to the soil. When the soil has a higher level of salt than plant roots, water flows out of the cells instead of into them. Therefore, plants will dry out and die. This will 30 .

Since OpenAI released ChatGPT in 2022, artificial intelligence (AI) has shaken up the world. When people talk about AI, they will think of OpenAI. But that may not be true anymore. Last month, Chinese company DeepSeek released its R1 model. It not only matches ChatGPT’s abilities but also, in some tasks, even outperforms it.
As a young student, you might be adding DeepSeek to your “dream company” list. The good news is that the company looks for young talents. But don’t start celebrating just yet. DeepSeek doesn’t welcome just any young off the street.
The most important quality may be creativity. Many companies just follow in OpenAI’s footsteps to invent their AI models. DeepSeek, however, took a different way. DeepSeek’s founder (创始人), Liang Wenfeng, praised his team’s fearless thinking, “They all have creative minds. You don’t even have to push them to think. When someone has a great idea, we will try our best to do it.”
Of course, thinking outside the box is only the first step. You also need the skills to turn ideas into working code (代码). Many young developers at DeepSeek had little work experience. Before working on R1, they had never trained AI models. But they do know how to do study and solve problems.
For young students like you, the most important thing to do now is build a strong foundation in all your subjects. Most DeepSeek developers are students of China’s top universities like Tsinghua. Without the basics, you’ll find it hard to get into these schools and companies like DeepSeek.
DeepSeek’s success also shows that Chinese talents can lead the world’s most competitive fields. Maybe one day, you’ll build an even more powerful AI model. Or maybe you’ll be successful elsewhere.

第三部分 书面表达
六、阅读表达

TikTok is the overseas version of Douyin. Last April, a U.S. law was made to ban (禁止) TikTok in the country from January 19, 2025. As the day drew close, American users flooded the Chinese app Xiaohongshu. These people called themselves “TikTok refugees”. They did so to show their anger at the ban. The Chinese users on Xiaohongshu welcomed them warmly.
As newcomers, the American users were asked to“pay a tax (税)”by posting photos of their cats, dogs or other pets. They happily shared photos and got many “likes” for them. Soon they started to get calls for help from Chinese school children. The kids found their English homework too hard! At the same time, many Chinese users helped American students with their math homework.
The two groups also discuss their everyday lives on the app. They compared food prices and college fees, for example, in the two countries. Many Chinese users used to think that most Americans had big houses and good jobs. On the other hand, lots of American users used to believe some fake (虚假的) news about China in the West. Now both sides know they were wrong.
Besides, many American users learned to cook Chinese dishes on the app. A lot of them, for example, tried making steamed egg custard. They would post videos of themselves making this dish.
As of March 2025, the TikTok ban has turned Xiaohongshu into an unexpected global village. American “refugees” share pet photos and tackle homework with Chinese friends, proving that even though our languages and cultures differ, we can still share the same joy and curiosity through the Internet.
