Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will “obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises. Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can't be said to show the baby's intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This selfimitation leads on to deliberate imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get our teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world. Thus the use at seven months of “mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself. I doubt, however, whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds. 4.Before children start speaking ________. A.they need equal amount of listening B.they need different amounts of listening C.they are all eager to cooperate with the adults by obeying spoken instructions D.they can't understand and obey the adults' oral instructions 解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第一段第二句中的“Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking”可知,孩子在开始说话之前需要不同数量的倾听。故选B。 5.Children who start speaking late ________. A.may have problems with their listening B.probably do not hear enough language spoken around them C.usually pay close attention to what they hear D.often take a long time in learning to listen properly 解析:选D 细节理解题。由第一段第二句中的“and later starters are often long listeners”可知,开始讲话越晚,学倾听的时间就越长。故选D。 6.A baby's first noises are________. A.an expression of his moods and feelings B.an early form of language C.a sign that he means to tell you something D.an imitation of the speech of adults 解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on”可知,婴儿一开始发出的声音是对自己情感的表达。故选A。 7.The writer implies ________. A.parents can never hope to teach their children new sounds B.children no longer imitate people after they begin to speak C.children who are good at imitating learn new words more quickly D.even after they have learnt to speak, children still enjoy imitating 解析:选D 细节理解题。根据最后一段倒数第二句“Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself.” D。 C While watching videos on Douyin one day, I came across a very unique profile(轮廓): an 88yearold farmer livestreaming trendy products in a rural setting. I clicked his page and saw that he was livestreaming because he needed to cover his wife's medical expenses. Curious, I decided to contact him and learn more about his story. Now a retired farmer, Wu relies on government subsidies(补贴). One rainy day, he returned to his rundown onefloor cottage in the suburb of Henan province and found his wife lying on the ground in great pain. She had broken her leg and lost the ability to walk. A great burden befell this already povertystricken family. The medical expenses for Wu's wife are about 800 yuan per month. Her daughter, a mother of three and a housewife, has no means of supporting Wu financially. As a heavy user on Douyin, Wu's daughter thought that perhaps they too could try livestreaming as a way to help their family. With a 9.9 yuan phone holder, they began livestreaming on Douyin, and Wu became one of the oldest livestreamers on the platform. Every day, Wu livestreams for a total of six hours, separated into morning and afternoon sessions. With a broad smile and soothing(宽慰的)voice, he explains the products on his table, which range from water bottles, makeup removers and vegetables to traditional Chinese clothing that Wu himself wears in front of the camera. Thousands of viewers are drawn in by his moving story and amiable(和蔼的)personality. They refer to him dearly as “my uncle Wu” or “Laoxiang”. During my interview with him, Wu would laugh warmly. His strong Henan dialect was sometimes hard to understand, but his tone was full of comfort and optimism. “I enjoy livestreaming. One day, one of the viewers came to visit me. I was so happy.” Wu spoke about the friendships he made after becoming a livestreamer, and his voice was so contagious(感染力的)that it put a smile on my face. He also does not avoid showing affection for his wife: “I will buy her good food when I have the money.” I am moved by his ability to see the optimistic side of life despite being struck by hardships and his resilience(坚韧)sailing through the low tides of life. After hours of working, many adults feel sleepy at noon and find themselves in desperate need of a recharge. But instead of grabbing a cup of coffee, it may be more worthwhile to combat sleepiness with sleep. A power nap can “provide the refreshment you need if you're struggling to stay alert or haven't had a good night's sleep,” explains Rebecca Robbins, a sleep scientist. A power nap “gives people the chance to rest for a short period of time to boost workplace productivity,” she says, but they are only beneficial when they are done correctly. How long should a power nap be? Sleep experts say that power naps should be quick and refreshing to increase alertness throughout the day. “You don't have to go to sleep fully.” says James Maas, a former professor and chair of psychology at Cornell University who coined the term “power nap” more than 50 years ago. “It's an opportunity to shut your eyes, breathe slowly and recharge.” For most people, 15 minutes should be enough to power through the rest of the work day. Howeve, Maas cautions that lengthier naps are counterproductive and even harmful. “Never nap for 60 minutes. If you power nap any time longer than 40 minutes, you're going to wake up feeling dizzy for another hour or so.” Shelby Harris, a clinical psychologist, adds that the best time to have your power nap is between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., because napping any later in the day “can interfere with your sleep at night.” In contrast to coffee or soda, which is likely to “damage your sleep at night and only offer short term energy for about 30 minutes,” Robbins says a power nap is a healthier alternative to improve workplace performance, strengthen memory and boost creativity. Harris adds naps have longterm health benefits too, such as improving your mood and aiding in stress management. “Power naps can reduce accidents and mistakes while also improving attention, alertness, concentration and performance. They can even be used effectively to combat drowsy driving when a short nap is taken just before getting behind the wheel,” she says. 12.How can we fight sleepiness after hours of working at noon? A.By drinking a cup of coffee. B.By having a power nap. C.By getting a good night's sleep. D.By listening to music. 根据第一段中“After hours of working, many adults feel sleepy at noon and find themselves in desperate need of a recharge. But instead of grabbing a cup of coffee, it may be more worthwhile to combat sleepiness with sleep.(工作了几个小时后,许多成年人在中午会感到困倦,迫切需要充电。但是比起喝杯咖啡,用睡眠来对抗困倦可能更有价值)”以及第二段中“A power nap ‘gives people the chance to rest for a short period of time to boost workplace productivity,’ she says, but they are only beneficial when they are done correctly. (她说,小睡“让人们有机会休息一小段时间,以提高工作效率”,但只有在正确的情况下才会有好处)”可知,中午工作几个小时后,我们可以小睡一会儿来克服困倦。故选B。 13.Which is the best choice for a power nap? A.15minutes between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. B.40 minutes between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. C.15 minutes between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. D.40 minutes between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. 根据第三段中“For most people, 15 minutes should be enough to power through the rest of the work day. (对大多数人来说,15分钟的时间应该足够让他们度过剩下的工作日了)”以及第四段“Shelby Harris, a clinical psychologist, adds that the best time to have your power nap is between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., because napping any later in the day “can interfere with your sleep at night.”(临床心理学家Shelby Harris补充说,小睡的最佳时间是下午1点到3点之间,因为白天任何晚一点的小睡“都会干扰你晚上的睡眠”)”可知,下午2点到3点之间15分钟是小睡的最佳选择。故选C。 14.What do Robbions and Harris mainly convey? A.The benefits of power naps. B.The damage coffee and soda do to you. C.Means of reducing accidents and mistakes. D.Ways to improve workplace performance. 根据最后一段“In contrast to coffee or soda, which is likely to “damage your sleep at night and only offer short term energy for about 30 minutes,” Robbins says a power nap is a healthier alternative to improve workplace performance, strengthen memory and boost creativity. They can even be used effectively to combat drowsy driving when a short nap is taken just before getting behind the wheel,” she says. A。 15.What can be the best title for the passage? A.Power naps' cons B.The benefits of coffee C.When we should take a power nap D.How to benefit from a power nap 解析:选D 主旨大意题。根据第二段“A power nap can ‘provide the refreshment you need if you're struggling to stay alert or haven't had a good night's sleep,’ explains Rebecca Robbins, a sleep scientist. If so, you've experienced tech neck. __16__. It's a common problem, and it's on the rise. Your neck muscles are designed to hold your head upright. __17__. But bending your head forward for long periods of time can strain your muscles. That can make them sore. In the past people spent most of their time looking up. But now people spend significant amounts of time looking down at their phones. They often hold them at waist or chest level. This causes people to crane their necks to see the phone, which, in turn, causes tech neck. __18__. It's probably not realistic to expect people to give up their phones to avoid tech neck. But giving up technology altogether isn't necessary. You can do things to avoid tech neck even while keeping your smartphone. First you can hold your phone up so you don't have to bend down to look at it. But this can be tiring for your arms. So keep your head upright, and look only with your eyes. Try to sit up straight in front of a screen as well, or it can hurt your back. Also, take breaks. __19__. If you've been sitting, stand up and walk around. Moving your body will help relax your muscles. If you continue experiencing tech neck, you can do exercise to strengthen your neck muscles. __20__. If you're aware of the problem, you can take measures to avoid it. A.Drop down your smartphone right now and have a walk outside B.Once in a while, look up from your screen, and roll your shoulders back C.Using smartphones excessively has resulted in tons of psychological problems D.Bending over to view the screen of a computer on a desk can have a similar effect E.Tech neck is a common result of using today's technology, but it doesn't have to be F.They can also move your head around and even crane it forward for a short amount of time G.Tech neck occurs when the use of phones, computers and other technology causes neck pain 16.解析:选G 由上文“Have you ever bent your head down to look at a screen until your neck muscles hurt? If so, you've experienced tech neck.”(你有没有曾经低头看屏幕,直到颈部疼痛? Screen对应phones, computers and other technology,及下文“It's a common problem, and it's on the rise.” 17.解析:选F 由上文“Your neck muscles are designed to hold your head upright”(你的颈部肌肉旨在保持你的头部直立。) 18.解析:选D 由上文“But now people spend significant amounts of time looking down at their phones...”(但现在人们花大量的时间低头看手机……) 19.解析:选B 由上文“take breaks”休息一下及下文“If you've been sitting, stand up and walk around...”(如果你一直坐着,就站起来走动一下……) 20.解析:选E 由下文“If you're aware of the problem, you can take measures to avoid it.” 句中的avoid(避免)呼应选项中的“doesn't have to be”。 My love of laundry (洗衣) deepened as I grew older. I climbed the stairs slowly, carrying a big suitcase,my father following with two bigger more.By the time I set foot onto the fifth floor,I got entirely burnt out and at the same time had a feeling of loneliness.Worse still,Dad missed a step and fell on his back, sending my new suitcases rolling down the stairs.“Damn it! (见鬼!)” he screamed, his face turning red.I knew storm was on the way.Whenever Dad's face turns red, look out. How could I ever get him to finish unloading the car without screaming at me and making a scene in front of the other girls, whom I would have to spend the rest of the year with?At that point, doors along the narrow passage were opening and strange faces peering out (探出) with curiosity,as Dad walked with difficulty close behind.I felt it in my bones that my college life was getting off to a bad start. “Wish to find the room quickly!” I prayed as I walked with my head bent.“Get him into a chair and calmed down.” But then again, would there be a chair in my dormitory?Or would it be a purely empty room?I didn't know what was in store for me. Finally I arrived at Room 512.________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ And there on a wellmade bed sat a girl,my new roommate.________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 参考范文: Finally I arrived at Room 512.I turned the key into the lock and pushed the door a little open, with Dad still complaining about a hurting knee or something.I put my head in,expecting the worst. But much to my surprise, the room wasn't empty at all! It was furnished with two sets of desks and chairs, bookshelves, curtains,a TV,and several pleasant paintings on the walls. And there on a wellmade bed sat a girl,my new roommate. She was dressed simply but neatly.Greeting me with a nod,she said in a soft voice,“Hi,I'm Amy,you must be Cori.” Then, she turned down the music and looked over at Dad,“And of course, you're Mr.Faber,” she said smiling.“Would you like a glass of iced tea?” Dad's face turned decidedly less red before he could bring out a “yes”.I knew then that Amy and I would be friends and my first year of college would be a success.
