As an important part of the ancient Silk Road, Northwest China’s Gansu Province has seen commercial and cultural exchanges between the East and the West for millennia. Gansu is home to numerous tourist destinations.
Mogao Caves
Located southeast of the oasis (绿洲) in Dunhuang, Mogao Caves are the world’s largest, most richly filled and longest-used treasure house of ancient art. The Mogao Caves were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.

The embrace between the two women lasted a long, tender time. Mwamikazi, an elderly woman, warmly held Ineza, a younger woman she had not seen for months. In a gentle, melodic voice like singing, Mwamikazi asked her a series of questions: “How are you? How is your husband? How are your kids? How are your cows? Are you on good terms with your neighbors?”
Pausing her song, Mwamikazi allowed Ineza to reply — a familiar rhythm from her many years of practice. “Ego,” Ineza answered repeatedly in their local Kirundi language, meaning “yes”.
Together, they were performing akazehe (对唱式问候礼), a traditional musical greeting passed down from their ancestors. A group of neighbors watched with quiet surprise; for many, it was their first time to see this unique custom, which is performed only by women.
In modern Burundi, however, such scenes are becoming rare. Among young people, few know what akazehe means, and even fewer can perform it. Many have stopped practicing this greeting, despite its beautiful purpose: to make the person greeted feel truly loved and valued, and to strengthen community bonds.
Although Ineza is today a teacher in Bujumbura who understands its value, recalling her own first encounter as a young girl on the central plateau (高原), she felt surprised and a little uneasy when greeted with such a song-like embrace. “I couldn’t stand it, and I wanted her to finish quickly,” she admits, “even though the words were sweet to hear for some people.” However, with time, she has come to deeply believe that customs like — akazehe should be preserved at all costs for their vital role in protecting families. In communities that keep this practice, women can share worries about home life with elder women during the greeting, opening the door to support from the extended family. Ineza emphasizes this elder guidance helps develop better emotional well-being for younger families, strengthening the entire community.
4. Which word best describes Mwamikazi’s questions?
A. False. B. Embarrassing.
C. Caring. D. Comic.
5. What can we infer about akazehe from paragraph 4?
A. It is at risk of disappearing. B. It is preferred by the young.
C. It is performed by most elders. D. It is a way to show one’s own beauty.
6. How did Ineza feel when she was initially greeted by akazehe?
A. Grateful. B. Calm. C. Afraid. D. Unbearable.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Song of Greeting B. The Origin of Akazehe
C. Two Women’s Encounter D. Bujumbura’s Family Gathering
C
Scientists have known for years that great apes (类人猿) like to play. But a new discovery shows that they also have a sense of humor and like to play jokes on each other. A new study has given scientists new insight into the lives of humanity’s closest relatives. It turns out that humans are not the only species to tease (取笑) each other; great apes do it too.
The idea that great apes play is not new. The great scientist Jane Goodall observed young chimpanzees playing, disturbing their elders by jumping, biting, and pulling hair. However, no one has ever taken the time to identify and characterize the type of play that great apes engage in until now.
The researchers found that young apes often came into contact with older apes during playful teasing, and their behavior was met with a positive response, rather than a violent one. If met with a non-reaction, a young ape would often repeat the behavior with greater strength until it received a reaction or the other ape just walked away. In addition, the apes would often look at the face of the individual they were teasing after the act, as if to gauge what their reaction would be.
Though researchers are still not certain as to what social function teasing plays in ape behavior, they do have some theories. It could be entertainment, or it could be a way for young apes to learn how to understand their social partners. Knowing what they can avoid and whom they can approach can teach them a lot about either boundaries, group classes or social rules.
In addition, researchers guess that the shared ancestors between great apes and humans may have also had the ability to joke and tease and that this type of behavior is perhaps the early form of humor. Whatever the case, this vital study enriches humanity’s understanding of our closest relatives and highlights the shared characters between us.
8. Which aspect of great apes does the new study focus on?
A. Their senses. B. Their ancestors.
C. Their playfulness. D. Their species.
9. What is the function of paragraph 2?
A. To give advice. B. To determine a definition.
C. To provide background. D. To describe a phenomenon.
10. What does the underlined word “gauge” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Acknowledge. B. Change. C. Encourage. D. Judge.
11. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about great apes’ playing jokes?
A. Its negative functions.
B. Its possible social roles.
C. Its benefits to understanding humans.
D. Its evolutionary link to human humor.
D
The “Smartphone Free Childhood (SFC)” movement has rapidly emerged as a powerful grassroots campaign, advocating that “childhood is too short to be spent on a smartphone”. At its heart, a simple suggestion: delay getting your child a phone until they’re 14, and access to social media until the age of 16. Give young minds a chance to develop free from the world of the algorithms (算法) which, to put it mildly, have hardly been designed with their welfare in mind.
SFC was born from a casual conversation between two mothers, Daisy Greenwell and Clare Ferynough. Concerned by the mental health evidence and the peer pressure surrounding phones, Greenwell felt a “fire” to act. Statistics show the scale of the issue: In the UK,89% of 12-year-olds and a quarter of 5- to 7-year-olds own a phone, with the average age of first ownership being just 9.
The movement highlights a strong correlation between the rise of smartphones around 2010 and a “skyrocketing” increase in teenage anxiety and depression. Dr Peter Cosgrove, SFC adviser, observes a clear link, noting how children’s mental health often improves when their phones are removed. The dangers include exposure to violent content, constant distracting notifications, and some other serious risks.
What began as a small online group has grown into a force with a team of six and a “Parent Pact” signed by 140,000 families globally. SFC works with schools, like Alderbrook, where headteacher Tom Beveridge has seen an improvement in student interaction after carrying out a phone-hand-in plan.
SFC clarifies it is not “anti-tech”. Co-founder Joe Ryrie states, “Tech isn’t the enemy; it’s how we use it that matters.” The movement is not calling for a total ban; instead, it looks for a middle ground. And it is even working with a producer to develop a safer, child-friendly phone. However, they call for legal changes, such as shifting the age of digital consent (准许) from 13 to 16. While governments like Australia are taking action, the UK government has so far been hesitant, but the growing push of SFC suggests the issue will be impossible to ignore.
12. What is the author’s attitude to the algorithms according to paragraph 1?
A. Curious. B. Appreciative. C. Indifferent. D. Critical.
13. How does paragraph 2 show the popularity of children using phones?
A. By listing data.
B. By citing a document.
C. By making assumptions.
D. By drawing comparisons.
14. What does Dr Cosgrove stress about phone removal?
A. Its physical risks to children.
B Its psychological benefits to children.
C. Its negative impact on children’s social interaction.
D. Its unclear relationship with children’s mental health.
15. What does the SFC movement advocate?
A. Tech balance in youth.
B. A total tech ban at school.
C. Lowering the digital-consent age.
D. A constant phone-free environment.

The steady rhythm of tennis balls striking the court was the soundtrack to my envy (羡慕). At seventeen, I stood on the edge of the school grounds, watching my friend Sam move across the court with effortless grace — close enough to see, yet far from being part of it. My father, once a college player, had taught me for years, but my body was always slow — balls flew past the line, and my serve never went in. “It’s about rhythm, not strength,” he said, but I never found the rhythm.
My desperation was highest when Coach Davies announced a “Beginner Tournament”.
Sam dared me to enter. “What’s the worst that could happen?” he smiled widely. Swallowing my pride, I signed up. When my father heard about it, he was surprised. Coach Davies was unsure, yet gave me two weeks of hard practice. The lessons were tough. My muscles hurt, my hands got red, and the basics of how to hold my racket (球拍), stand, and swing felt like learning a foreign language. Progress was slow, measured one good hit at a time.
The tournament day came. My first match was against another beginner. To my shock, the practice worked. I won. Then I won again. Each win felt like a small gift. In the semi final, I met a senior who laughed at my luck. We fought hard. My legs shook but I kept the ball in. But at 10-9, the match point, he slipped on a leaf and missed. The crowd gasped; I helped him up. Coach Davies nodded once, rare praise from him. My father clapped so loudly that I heard it above the wind. Sam waited at the net, smiling. “Finals, Alex. Bring your best,” he said.
The sun was warm. A bee flew round the court, and Coach Davies told us to keep still. I forgot the pain and watched it leave. Little did I guess it would soon help me win.
注意:
(1)续写词数应150个左右;
The final between Sam and me began.

C 5. A 6. D 7. A
根据第一段中“In a gentle, melodic voice like singing, Mwamikazi asked her a series of questions: “How are you? How is your husband? How are your kids? How are your cows? Are you on good terms with your neighbors?” (用一种如歌唱般温柔、悠扬的声音,Mwamikazi问了她一系列问题:“你好吗?你丈夫怎么样?你的孩子怎么样?你的牛怎么样?你和邻居相处得好吗?”)”可知,Mwamikazi问的问题都是关于对方生活各方面的关心询问,所以C项“Caring.(关心的)”最能描述她的问题。故选C。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“In modern Burundi, however, such scenes are becoming rare. Among young people, few know what akazehe means, and even fewer can perform it. (然而,在现代布隆迪,这样的场景正变得罕见。在年轻人中,很少有人知道akazehe是什么意思,能表演它的人就更少了。)”可推知,akazehe有消失的风险。故选A。
根据第五段中“Although Ineza is today a teacher in Bujumbura who understands its value, recalling her own first encounter as a young girl on the central plateau (高原), she felt surprised and a little uneasy when greeted with such a song-like embrace. “I couldn’t stand it, and I wanted her to finish quickly,” (尽管Ineza如今是布琼布拉的一名教师,深知其价值,但回想起自己年轻时在中央高原上的初次经历,当她受到如此如歌般的拥抱时,她感到惊讶且有些不安。
故选A。

C 9. C 10. D 11. B
根据第一段的句子“But a new discovery shows that they also have a sense of humor and like to play jokes on each other. A new study has given scientists new insight into the lives of humanity’s closest relatives. It turns out that humans are not the only species to tease (取笑) each other; great apes do it too. (但一项新发现表明,它们也有幽默感,喜欢互相开玩笑。一项新的研究让科学家们对人类近亲的生活有了新的认识。事实证明,人类并不是唯一会互相取笑的物种;类人猿也会这么做。)”可知,研究聚焦类人猿的“嬉戏行为”。故选C项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段的内容“The idea that great apes play is not new. The great scientist Jane Goodall observed young chimpanzees playing, disturbing their elders by jumping, biting, and pulling hair. However, no one has ever taken the time to identify and characterize the type of play that great apes engage in until now.(类人猿玩耍的想法并不新鲜。伟大的科学家简·古道尔观察到年轻的黑猩猩玩耍,它们跳来跳去、咬来咬去、扯去毛发,打扰了它们的长辈。然而,直到现在,还没有人花时间去识别和描述类人猿所从事的游戏类型。)”可知,该段通过引用已有研究,为新研究提供“背景信息”。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词前的部分“the apes would often look at the face of the individual they were teasing after the act (类人猿在戏弄他人后,常会看着对方的脸)”和下文的“what their reaction would be (他们的反应会是什么)”可知,类人猿在戏弄他人后,常会看着对方的脸,肯定是想“判断”对方的反应。
根据第四段的句子“Though researchers are still not certain as to what social function teasing plays in ape behavior, they do have some theories. It could be entertainment, or it could be a way for young apes to learn how to understand their social partners. (尽管研究人员仍不确定戏弄在类人猿行为中扮演何种社会功能,但他们有一些理论。这可能是一种娱乐,也可能是年轻类人猿学习理解社交伙伴的方式)”可知,该段主要讲类人猿嬉戏行为“可能的社会作用”。故选B项。
B. Its psychological benefits to children.

此空考查谓语动词,主语Visiting museums与become为主动关系,根据时间状语“since the eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday this year”可知,应用现在完成时;主语“Visiting museums”是动名词短语,视为单数。故填has become。
故填of。
故填and。
+ for sb. to do sth.”,it作形式主语,不定式作真正主语。故填to get。
故填who。
work此处表“作品”,为可数名词,前面有“a collection of”修饰,应用复数形式works。

My Experience of Environmental Conservation
Last month, I joined my classmates in a park cleanup activity. With great enthusiasm, we picked up plastic bottles, paper scraps and all kinds of other litter, then carefully sorted them into recycling bins. We also put up eye-catching posters to earnestly remind visitors not to litter.
This experience made me realize small actions matter. Now, I always carry a reusable bag while shopping and actively stop others from littering whenever I can. It taught me everyone can contribute to protecting our planet.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
The final between Sam and me began.

The final between Sam and me began. Sam started with a powerful serve that I barely returned. My hands sweated and legs felt heavy, but I remembered Coach’s words about rhythm. Just then, a bee flew near the net — I paused, watching it calmly, like before. When it left, I took a deep breath and hit the ball smoothly. To my surprise, it landed in the corner. Sam looked shocked, and the crowd cheered. For the rest of the match, I kept that calm rhythm, matching Sam’s moves. Finally, with a well-timed backhand, I won the last point.
Coach Davies stood by the gate and asked me, “You saw the bee again?” I nodded, still breathless. “It reminded me to stay calm,” I said. He smiled and patted my shoulder: “That’s the rhythm you lacked — calm in pressure.” My father ran over with a water bottle, and Sam shook my hand: “You deserved it.” Looking at the court, I realized winning wasn’t just about practice, but finding my own rhythm in tennis and life.
