Byung-jin Park, a 36-year-old punk musician from Seoul, understands the power of doing nothing. In May, he and his bandmates outlasted a hundred competitors to win South Korea’s 2025 Space Out competition, an annual event where participants are judged on their ability to remain calm and motionless for 90 minutes. No phones, no conversation, no nodding off, just existing.
Launched in 2014 by visual artist Woopsyang as a public art project criticizing modern burnout, the competition has evolved into a cultural ritual along Seoul’s Han River, mixing performance art, mindfulness, and a quiet challenge to the popular belief that silence equals stagnation (停滞). Participants wear heart rate monitors and winners are determined through a combination of biometric (生理数据) calmness and audience votes.
“As time passed, I started to forget where I was, “says Park. “It felt like my body had disappeared.” Park’s win is more than just a quirky (搞怪的) viral story. It reflects a deeper hunger for rest in a society overwhelmed by noise. A 2014 University of Virginia study found that many people preferred mild electric shocks over being alone with their thoughts for even fifteen minutes. But science suggests that stillness has value.
Spacing Out activates· what neuroscientists call the brain’s default mode network — linked to creativity, emotional processing, and problem-solving. “In an overstimulated modern society, taking the time to reflect about one’s inner self and emotions can allow people to control their thoughts and actions,” says Hanson Park, a psychiatrist and a professor at Seoul National University’s Department of Anthropology. “This process can reduce stress-related hormones (激素) and in the long term can also be effective in relieving anxiety or depression.”
Byung-jin’s winning strategy — slow abdominal (腹部的) breathing, focusing on a single point and letting other thoughts disappear — shows how a simple skill can be surprisingly transformative. Motionlessness won’t solve all your problems, but you will feel your thoughts transform. It’s super refreshing.
4. What is the Space Out competition mainly about?
A. Testing participants’ musical talents. B. Challenging people to stay still and calm.
C. Promoting social interaction among strangers. D. Encouraging creative performance art.
5. Why does the author mention the University of Virginia study in paragraph 3?
A. To show that stillness is difficult for many people.
B. To explain the scientific method behind the competition.
C. To criticize modern society’s addiction to technology.
D. To demonstrate the harmful effects of electric shocks.
6. According to Hanson Park, what is the benefit of “spacing out”?
A It improves physical fitness. B. It enhances social connections.
C. It helps reduce worry or pressure. D. It increases competitive abilities.
7. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude towards the Space Out competition?
A. Doubtful. B. Neutral. C. Confused. D. Appreciative.

When I arrived at the Sign Language Center in Manhattan for my first American Sign Language (ASL) class, a man took one look at my hesitant posture and held up some fingers. One? Two? I put up one finger, and he directed me to the Level 1 class. It was disorienting: Class time was strictly “voices off” to encourage immersive learning and to show respect to the deaf teachers. Without the power of speech, all my classmates and I could do was smile and nod at one another as we took in the new vocabulary.
Learning ASL in the early weeks was a culture shock. As a writer, I pride myself on a certain facility with language. I was taught that there’s a perfect combination of words that can most precisely communicate any thought. With ASL, I expected to feel similarly, and thought fluency would come once I collected a critical mass of signs. The first thing you learn in ASL class is the alphabet. As my classmates and I asked and answered questions using words we didn’t have the signs for, those early weeks were filled with laborious spelling. It was embarrassing: Seeing a dozen politely smiling faces watching me as I slowly spelled, misspelled and restarted spelling words —often multiple times — was its own kind of torture.
Over time, I picked up on new conventions, like waving a hand or stomping (跺脚) on the ground to get someone’s attention. My fingers stopped as they reached for new shapes, and I struggled to differentiate very similar looking signs. Eventually I realized that when you’re communicating in sign language, diction (措辞) is not as important as the way you embody (具体化) what you’re communicating. I once asked a teacher how to sign the word “desperate”. “ASL doesn’t have a direct translation of every English word,” he told me. “If you want to sign ‘desperate’, you might just sign the word ‘want’, but with the appropriate facial and body posturing to show your desperation. It doesn’t make sense to sign ‘frustrated’ if your face doesn’t look at all frustrated,” he added — it’s like speaking in a single unvarying tone while claiming you’re angry.
I’ve been attending ASL classes for almost two years. Initially, my reason was insignificant: a childhood fascination with “secret languages”. While ASL may not wholly share a vocabulary with English, that doesn’t mean it lacks precision. Its precision, I’ve learned, lies in the common language of the body.
8. How did the author feel in the first ASL class?
A. Confused. B. Frustrated. C. Anxious. D. Ambitious.
9. What made the author embarrassed when learning the alphabet?
A. Putting on smiling facial expressions. B. Being made fun of in front of the class.
C. Misspelling and respelling words repeatedly. D. Waving a hand to get someone’s attention.
10. According to the passage, what can we learn about ASL?
A. It requires a combination of signs and emotions. B. It conveys more emotions than verbal language.
C. It’s a universal language system across cultures. D. It has a direct translation of signs for every word.
11. What has the author learned from her learning experience?
A. ASL prioritizes precision over communication. B. Diction is what gives language flavour.
C. Fluency comes from the mastery of signs. D. The body is what gives language life.
D
In the Alps and Apennines of southern Europe, longhorn beetles are moving uphill, and a rare brown butterfly with orange-tipped wings is facing extinction due to isolation (隔离) at high peaks. This is a picture of a global trend. With temperatures rising and pressure on biodiversity growing, insects vital to our ecosystems are not only moving north and south, but up.
Research shows many animals are making similar moves, but insects’ high levels of mobility and short generation times allow them to respond quickly to change. Bumblebees in the Pyrenees have moved upwards on average by more than a metre a year, with some species making significantly greater journeys. All of this shows the speed of climate change and its ecological impacts at higher altitudes (海拔).
In ecology, finding the “smoking gun” to neatly explain any phenomenon is generally difficult. Prof. Christy McCain, who runs Colorado University’s Mountain Lab, said: “One thing that people don’t think about as much is context: how climate affects insects at different life stages, such as eggs and larvae (幼虫). Measuring adults in summer might not reveal the most critical impacts of climate change, especially in cold and dry mountain environments.”
McCain believes the way data has been collected historically is preventing their understanding, with too many museum specimens (标本) from low altitudes, and far fewer from higher up. And many groups other than butterflies and moths (蛾) have been neglected.
To support her view, she cites research on carrion beetles by a student in her lab. The study shows that climate tolerance might be passed down in these impacts, which play a key role in decomposition and protect them from extreme conditions. Their long history since the Cretaceous (白垩纪) also aids their adaptation today.
There is no such thing as a standard insect or response to environmental change. For some groups, it might be a case of the bigger and more mobile they are, the better their chances. There is also no universal upland habitat and this too could prove a saving grace.
12. Bumblebees in the Pyrenees are mentioned because ______.
A. they are more mobile than other insects
B. they have adapted well to higher altitudes
C. they are a useful indicator of climate change
D. they face extinction due to upward movement
13. Which statement may McCain agree with according to paragraphs 3 and 4?
A Study context is beyond grasp.
B. Research data are hard to obtain.
C. Insect samples are unrepresentative.
D. Collection method is unconventional.
14. Why does McCain cite research on carrion beetles?
A. To argue for their sensitivity to environmental changes.
B. To call for the protection of insects from higher altitudes.
C. To redirect focus from insects moving uphill to those downhill.
D. To offer new insights into insects’ adaptation to climate change.
15. What does “a saving grace” in the last paragraph mean?
A. A method used to collect data.
B. A problem that needs to be solved.
C. A feature that helps improve a situation.
D. A type of insect that adapts well to change.

My friend Ollie found a super-cool treasure near his house — a little bird.
On my way to the park, I saw Ollie sitting on his steps, signaling me to be quiet. To my surprise, the cutest little bird was perched right on his shoulder! It seemed completely at ease! Ollie explained that it had hopped onto him without any fear. We figured it must be someone’s lost pet.
Ollie’s grandmother, Abuela, came out with a dish of water and suggested calling the animal shelter. When we got through, the man on the phone told us that no one had reported a missing bird recently. He advised us to put up “Found Bird” flyers in the neighborhood. Meanwhile, I suggested we also post Blue’s information and cute pictures on our local community’s online bulletin board, hoping the power of the internet would help. Abuela’s friend Michiko, who knew a lot about birds, brought a cage, some seeds and helpful advice. A wave of relief washed over Ollie when Michiko approved of the name “Blue” that Ollie had given her.
That afternoon, Ollie and I were busy making “Found Bird” flyers. Blue, perched happily on the edge of the table, provided a sweet soundtrack with her cheerful chirps. Abuela watched us with a warm smile, sighing softly, “I would miss Blue’s beautiful songs”. Seeing this as the perfect opportunity, Ollie looked up, his eyes full of hope.“Abuela,” he begged, his voice a little shaky, “if...if no one claims her, could we please keep her? I promise I’ ll be fully responsible” Looking at Ollie’s earnest face, then at the content little bird, Abuela finally nodded slowly. “Well,” she said firmly, “we must try our best to find her owner first.”
However, one flyer Ollie made was full of “accidents” — the picture of Blue was glued upside down, and the title mistakenly read “Found Bread”. He admitted he might have messed up a little on purpose, because he was conflicted between his desire to keep Blue and his responsibility to find her owner.
We put up all the correct flyers. After a month and a half with no response, Blue officially became a member of Ollie’s family, her cheerful songs filling their home with lasting joy.
注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右;
With Blue now a beloved family member, Ollie’s days were filled with joyful responsibility.

A. It improves physical fitness. B. It enhances social connections.
C. It helps reduce worry or pressure. D. It increases competitive abilities.
7. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude towards the Space Out competition?
A. Doubtful. B. Neutral. C. Confused. D. Appreciative.
B 5. A 6. C 7. D

A 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第一段中的“It was disorienting: Class time was strictly “voices off” to encourage immersive learning and to show respect to the deaf teachers. Without the power of speech, all my classmates and I could do was smile and nod at one another as we took in the new vocabulary.(这让人晕头转向:为了鼓励沉浸式学习并尊重聋人教师,上课时间严格要求“保持安静”。没有了说话的能力,我和所有同学只能一边学习新词汇,一边互相微笑点头。)”可知,“disorienting”意为“令人困惑的”,作者在第一堂手语课上因课堂规则和交流方式的陌生而感到困惑。故选A项。
根据第二段中的“It was embarrassing: Seeing a dozen politely smiling faces watching me as I slowly spelled, misspelled and restarted spelling words — often multiple times — was its own kind of torture.(这很尴尬:看着十几张礼貌微笑的脸注视着我,我慢慢地拼写、拼错,然后重新拼写——通常要重复好几次——这本身就是一种折磨。)”
根据第三段中的““If you want to sign ‘desperate’, you might just sign the word ‘want’, but with the appropriate facial and body posturing to show your desperation. It doesn’t make sense to sign ‘frustrated’ if your face doesn’t look at all frustrated,” he added — it’s like speaking in a single unvarying tone while claiming you’re angry. (“如果你想表达“极度渴望”,或许只需比出“想要”这个手语,但要配合恰当的面部表情和肢体姿态来传递那种迫切感。”他补充道,“如果你的表情完全看不出沮丧,那比出“沮丧”的手语也毫无意义 ——这就好比你声称自己很生气,说话的语气却平淡无波。”)”可知,美国手语需要手势与情感相结合。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“While ASL may not wholly share a vocabulary with English, that doesn’t mean it lacks precision. Its precision, I’ve learned, lies in the common language of the body. (虽然美国手语可能与英语没有完全相同的词汇,但这并不意味着它缺乏精准性。我了解到,它的精准性在于肢体这一通用语言。)”可知,作者从学习经历中领悟到,肢体是赋予语言生命力的关键,手语的精准性正是通过肢体表达实现的。故选D项。
A. Study context is beyond grasp.
C 13. C 14. D 15. C

根据第二段中“Research shows many animals are making similar moves, but insects’ high levels of mobility and short generation times allow them to respond quickly to change. Bumblebees in the Pyrenees have moved upwards on average by more than a metre a year, with some species making significantly greater journeys. All of this shows the speed of climate change and its ecological impacts at higher altitudes.
根据第三段中“One thing that people don’t think about as much is context: how climate affects insects at different life stages, such as eggs and larvae. Measuring adults in summer might not reveal the most critical impacts of climate change, especially in cold and dry mountain environments. (人们不太考虑的一件事是背景:气候如何影响昆虫在不同生命阶段,如卵和幼虫。在夏天测量成虫可能无法揭示气候变化最关键的影响,尤其是在寒冷干燥的山区环境中。)”和第四段中“McCain believes the way data has been collected historically is preventing their understanding, with too many museum specimens from low altitudes, and far fewer from higher up. And many groups other than butterflies and moths have been neglected. (麦凯恩认为,历史上的数据收集方式阻碍了他们的理解,博物馆里来自低海拔地区的标本太多,而来自高海拔地区的标本太少。除了蝴蝶和飞蛾之外的许多类群都被忽视了。)”可知,麦凯恩认为在夏天测量成虫可能无法揭示气候变化最关键的影响,且来自低海拔地区的标本太多,所以昆虫样本不能很好地代表整体情况,缺乏全面性和代表性。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。第四段中“McCain believes the way data has been collected historically is preventing their understanding, with too many museum specimens (标本) from low altitudes, and far fewer from higher up. And many groups other than butterflies and moths (蛾) have been neglected. (麦凯恩认为,历史上收集数据的方式防碍了他们的理解,因为博物馆里有太多来自低海拔地区的标本,而来自高海拔地区的标本则少得多。而除了蝴蝶和飞蛾之外的许多类群都被忽视了。)”麦凯恩提出“在昆虫适应气候变化的相关研究中,除了蝴蝶和飞蛾之外的许多类群都被忽视了”这一观点,而第五段中“To support her view, she cites research on carrion beetles by a student in her lab. The study shows that climate tolerance might be passed down in these impacts, which play a key role in decomposition and protect them from extreme conditions. Their long history since the Cretaceous also aids their adaptation today. (为了支持她的观点,她引用了她实验室里一名学生对埋葬虫的研究。研究表明,在这些影响中,气候耐受性可能会遗传下来,这在分解过程中起着关键作用,并保护它们免受极端条件的影响。它们自白垩纪以来的悠久历史也有助于它们如今的适应。)”麦凯恩引用了对埋葬虫的研究来证明自己的观点,即提供关于昆虫适应气候变化的新领悟。故选D项。
【15题详解】
词句猜测题。上文“There is no such thing as a standard insect or response to environmental change. For some groups, it might be a case of the bigger and more mobile they are, the better their chances. (没有一种标准昆虫或对环境变化的标准反应。对于一些群体来说,可能是它们越大、越具移动性,生存机会就越好。)”说明昆虫适应环境变化的情况各不相同,接着“There is also no universal upland habitat and this too could prove a saving grace. (也没有通用的高地栖息地,这也可能被证明是一种……)”提到也没有通用的高地栖息地。鉴于昆虫适应环境存在困难的情况下,“this too could prove a saving grace”说明这种没有通用高地栖息地的情况反而可能成为帮助改善昆虫适应环境现状的一个因素。所以“a saving grace”指的是有助于改善现状的一个特征,与C项“A feature that helps improve a situation.”

此处表示并列关系,连接两个名词短语“a silk layer carrying the ink”和“a paper layer supporting it”,所以用连词and。故填and。

注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右;
With Blue now a beloved family member, Ollie’s days were filled with joyful responsibility.

With Blue now a beloved family member, Ollie’s days were filled with joyful responsibility. Every morning, he woke up early to refill her seed bowl and fresh water, chatting softly as the little bird hopped onto his finger, chirping in response. After school, they’d sit on the porch steps — Blue perched on his shoulder, singing along while Ollie shared stories of class. He cleaned her cage diligently every weekend, and Abuela often baked cookies while humming to Blue’s cheerful tunes. The bird’s presence turned ordinary days warm, her songs weaving through their home like a sweet melody.
One sunny afternoon, a timid knock interrupted their peace. A girl around Ollie’s age stood at the door, clutching the crumpled “Found Bread” flyer. “I think this is my bird Sky,” she said, voice trembling, describing a tiny white spot under her wing. Ollie’s heart ached, but he gently fetched Blue. At the sight of the girl, Blue flew into her arms, chirping excitedly. Tears blurred Ollie’s eyes, but he smiled — sad to part, yet grateful Blue had found her way back to her true owner.

①添满:refill /fill up
②描述:describe /depict
③带回:fetch /bring back
①兴奋地:excitedly /with excitement
②欢快的:cheerful/pleasant
