“A doctor predicted I wouldn’t live past 20. But now I’m 29, happy with my life,” says Ma Jun, a recent winner of a prestigious (声誉高的) literary award. Ma, who uses a wheelchair, has overcome countless obstacles with incredible determination.
Born with a condition that left his limbs weak, Ma’s childhood was lonely. While other children ran and played, he could only watch from the stone steps of his home, a memory that became the title of his award-winning book, The Green and White Stone Steps. His journey into writing began after a great sacrifice. To ensure his younger brother could afford to stay in school, Ma gave up his own chance to attend university. This selfless decision, born of love, left him feeling hopeless and confined to his bed.
The turning point came when a friend gave him a book by Shi Tiesheng, a famous writer who also used a wheelchair. At first, Ma had no interest, but the word “wheelchair” caught his eye. Reading about someone who turned similar struggles into profound literature was like a spark of light in his darkness. Shi’s unwavering (坚定的) hope inspired Ma to believe that a person with physical challenges could still lead a meaningful and joyful life.
Inspired by Shi, Ma found his new path: literature. He realized he could do something meaningful instead of letting life pass him by. He spent the next three years writing his book, pouring his own life experiences onto the pages. Publishing seemed like another impossible obstacle due to a lack of resources, but he submitted his work to a national project for ethnic writers. Against all odds, his powerful story was recognized, proving that the human spirit can triumph over the greatest of challenges.
4. Why did Ma decide not to attend university?
A. He had lost interest in his studies. B. He was advised against it by doctors.
C. He wanted his brother to stay in school. D. He preferred to begin his writing career.
5. How does the author seem to feel about Ma Jun?
A. He is deeply impressed by his spirit. B. He is neutral about his life choices.
C. He is doubtful of his future success. D. He is sympathetic but critical.
6. What did Ma most likely learn from Shi Tiesheng’s book?
A. Writing skills can be easily acquired. B. One’s passion can be found in reading.
C. Family support is essential for success. D. Physical disability does not define one’s life.
7. What does Ma’s journey in writing his book suggest?
A. Success in writing requires financial support.
B. Difficult life experiences can inspire great art.
C. It is better to write about joy than sadness.
D. Young writers often struggle to get published.

Bacteria (细菌) know how to rough it out all over the earth. Ask most of them where they’d truly prefer to settle, and a kitchen sponge (海绵) would probably top the list. Yes, it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces, is packed of tiny life.
Lingchong You, a biologist at Duke University, along with his team, used computers to model the complex environment of a sponge for a 2024 study. He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. This holds significance as certain bacteria tend to grow independently while others demand company (陪伴) of others. Within a sponge filled with holes and pockets, there exist such an abundance of diverse structures that everyone gets a state of satisfaction.
However, it does not necessarily follow that these tools present a health risk to us as well. Bacteria exist everywhere and not all are harmful; in fact, many perform vital jobs. The important question is, therefore, are the bacteria found in sponges even worth worrying about?
In 2017, Jennifer Quinlan, a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100 homes, finding that only 1-2% of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria. “The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan. “Having said that, there is a possibility that if you use a sponge to wipe up raw meat, you could have some of those disease-causing bacteria on there, and studies have found that those bacteria can be separated from kitchen sponges.
This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.
8. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Sponges are perfect tools in the kitchen.
B. Bacteria prefer to live in dry environment.
C. Kitchen sponges are good home for bacteria.
D. Bacteria affect kitchen sponges’ performance.
9. What did Lingchong You find in his study?
A. How sponges are exactly structured.
B. What encourages bacterial growth.
C. How bacteria react to the environment.
D. Why bacteria keep company with each other.
10. What does Quinlan think of bacteria on sponges?
A. Relatively harmless. B. Poorly adaptive.
C. Surprisingly unpleasant. D. Widely distributed.
11. What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph?
A. Proofs of bacterial threat. B. The varieties of bacteria.
C. Methods to control bacterial growth. D. Researches into usage of bacteria.

Mo Wilde’s fascinating book, Free Food: Wild Plants and How to Eat Them, makes the case for connecting with nature by finding your cuisine beyond supermarket shelves.
A couple of years ago, the thin branches of an elder (接骨木) bush inched through the open blinds of my apartment building, gradually forming what I can only describe as a piece of living wallpaper. Mother Nature was breaking into our boundaries — reminding us who’s boss. I thought it was fantastic, but the householder did not. A tree surgeon was called in.
Mo Wilde would have had other ideas. In Free Food, she suggests using elder leaves when cooking potatoes: they have a similar taste to parsley, a plant used as a herb in cooking. This simple way bridges the gap that middlemen, such as supermarkets and grocery shops, have placed between us and the natural world. “We are nature,” Wilde writes. “And making good use of more wild food into our diets will make us more conscious of that.”
Free Food advocates for integration, not complete replacement. For instance, try using leaves instead of tin foil for wrapping delicate food when barbecuing. Tables, like the “Wild Spice Conversion Chart” make wild garlic look downright basic. Do you know sneezewort produces a similar taste to Sichuan pepper? Her suggestions even involve using plants for medicinal teas and household items. Wilde’s tone is encouraging and her expertise and experience make you trust her, and her enthusiasm makes you turn the page.
Readers whose home is their kitchen will notice that Wilde provides more ideas than recipes. Since reading Free Food, I’ve found myself picking leaves and seeing whether I can identify them without an app, though there is always an app that would instantly tell me what they are. The appeal of collecting is that it forces you to pay attention to your surroundings and build a relationship with nature, one plant at a time.
12. Why did the householder call in a tree surgeon?
A. To remove the elder branches. B. To repair the blinds.
C. To get another elder tree planted. D. To replace the wallpaper.
13. Where does Mo Wilde see a gap?
A. Between elder leaves and parsley. B. Between our diet and nature gifts.
C. Between wild food and our awareness. D. Between supermarkets and grocery shops.
14. What can the underlined word “sneezewort” refer to in paragraph 4?
A. A health-care tea. B. A big leaf used as a package.
C. A household cleaning article. D. A wild plant with a hot flavor.
15. What change has the author undergone after reading Free Food?
A. Falling in love with cooking. B. Starting to collect leaves for recipes.
C. Coming into closer contact with nature. D. Learning to draw on apps to explore plants.

Whether it’s fitting in enough seating or figuring out a way to decorate the walls, balancing functionality and design in a small living room can be a challenge. So, how do you transform a small space into a comfortable and inviting one? ___16___.
●Consider installing (安装) built-ins. Custom built-ins can change how you use space in a smaller living room. “___17___,” says Rachel Humphreys of Humphrey Orr Interiors. “The top of the built-in should align with (与……对齐) the function leads the eye upward and make the room feel grander.”
●___18___. While you might want a sofa, side table, coffee table and two accent chairs, you may need to give up some of your choices if you don’t havea large space. “A smaller room might only need a large sofa or sectional, a coffee table and a chair,” says Humphreys.
●Add a mirror or use special paint. “___19___,” shares Humphreys. “Adding a large decorative mirror to a wall can make the room feel larger.” If you’re not into decorating with mirrors, the designer suggests using highly reflective paint instead. This can have a similar effect, bouncing the light across the room and making the space feel more expansive.
●Hang the curtains extra high. According to Humphreys, one of the best tricks is to install curtains much higher than the top of the window to draw the eye upward. A golden rule is to hang the rods (长杆) about two-tirds up from the distance between the top of the window to the ceiling. ___20___. Growing up in Damascus, Syria, I was surrounded by the sights and sounds of everyday life, including the many street cats that wandered freely. Among them was a special kitten with beautiful green eyes, one born right behind our house. From the moment I laid eyes on him, there was an unspoken connection between us.
I named him Skippy because of his playful way of skipping across the yard during our hide-and-seek games. Our bond went beyond the yard’s boundaries. Skippy would even accompany me to school every day. Though my mother, afraid he would bring germs into the house, preferred him to stay outdoors, I secretly welcomed him into my bedroom each night, where he’d curl up by my feet until dawn. When the sun started rising, I’d let him out of the window, and he would make the short trip around the house to greet me at the kitchen glass door.
As I grew older, I dreamed of studying in France. When the time came to pursue my dream, it was bittersweet. Leaving behind not only my family and friends but also Skippy was heartbreaking. How could I explain to him that I wouldn’t be coming home every day?
Thousands of miles away in college, I often called home to inquire about Skippy. My mom was unclear when I asked, but after months of pushing, she admitted that Skippy had been coming to my bedroom window every morning to look for me. However, he hadn’t shown up for some days. She feared he had passed away. There was silence on the phone, interrupted by the sound of my sobbing.
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
A year later, during winter break, I returned to Damascus.

Ask most of them where they’d truly prefer to settle and a kitchen sponge (海绵) would probably top the list.
C 9. B 10. A 11. A

A 13. B 14. D 15. C

根据第三段中“In Free Food, she suggests using elder leaves when cooking potatoes: they have a similar taste to parsley, a plant used as a herb in cooking. This simple way bridges the gap that middlemen, such as supermarkets and grocery shops, have placed between us and the natural world.(在Free Food一书中,她建议在烹饪土豆时使用接骨木叶:它们的味道与烹饪中用作药草的欧芹相似。
根据最后一段中“Since reading Free Food, I’ve found myself picking leaves and seeing whether I can identify them without an app, though there is always an app that would instantly tell me what they are. 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
___20___. Be sure to measure more than once, so you don’t accidentally order the wrong size.
A. Buy less furniture
B. Put your furniture in order
C. A brighter living room generally looks larger
D. Reflective surfaces always help enlarge a space
E. This will make the ceilings feel higher and the space larger
F. A few strategic design changes can visually expand your living room
G. Built-ins, such as bookcases, can add another dimension to the space and provide storage
F 17. G 18. A 19. D 20. E
上文“So, how do you transform a small space into a comfortable and inviting one?(那么,如何将一个小空间变成一个舒适宜人的空间呢?)”
上文“Custom built-ins can change how you use space in a smaller living room.(定制的内置家具可以改变你在小客厅里使用空间的方式)”说明内置家具可以改变空间的使用方式。 “add another dimension”和“provide storage”对应前文“change how you use space”。故选G。
下文“While you might want a sofa, side table, coffee table and two accent chairs, you may need to give up some of your choices if you don’t have a large space.(虽然你可能想要一个沙发、边桌、咖啡桌和两把装饰椅,但如果你没有足够的空间,你可能需要放弃一些选择)”说明需要减少家具数量。A项“少买家具”作为段落标题,与后文“give up some of your choices”以及“only need a large sofa or sectional”形成对应,突出“功能与空间平衡”的核心。故选A。
下文“Adding a large decorative mirror to a wall can make the room feel larger.(在墙上加一面大的装饰镜可以让房间看起来更大)”说明镜子可以扩大空间感。 “enlarge a space”对应后文“make the room feel larger”,且与“highly reflective paint”形成关键词复现。故选 D。
上文“According to Humphreys, one of the best tricks is to install curtains much higher than the top of the window to draw the eye upward. A golden rule is to hang the rods (长杆) about two-thirds up from the distance between the top of the window to the ceiling.(根据汉弗莱斯的说法,最好的技巧之一是把窗帘安装得比窗户顶部高很多,以吸引眼球向上看。一个黄金法则是将窗帘杆安装在距离窗户顶部到天花板距离的三分之二处)”说明安装窗帘杆的具体位置。空处和前文为顺接关系,说明这样安装窗帘杆的效果。所以E项“这会让天花板感觉更高,空间更大”符合语境。this指代前文挂窗帘的做法,“ceilings feel higher”与“draw the eye upward”呼应,“space larger”总结视觉扩张效果,与后文“measure more than once”形成逻辑延续。

A year later, during winter break, I returned to Damascus. The familiar sights of my childhood home brought both comfort and sadness. As I approached the front door, I heard a soft meow from behind the house. My heart skipped a beat. There, standing in the same spot where he used to wait for me, was Skippy. He looked up at me, and for a moment, I was frozen, unsure whether this was a dream or reality. But then, with a familiar leap, he jumped towards me.
Tears streamed down my face as I hugged Skippy. The years apart seemed to melt away in that instant. Skippy had been waiting for me, just as I had once waited for him. I stroked his fur gently, whispering apologies for being away so long. Skippy snuggled my face, purring softly in response, as if to say that he had missed me too. This time, I told my mother I wanted him to stay with me overnight. I didn’t want to hide him anymore. In that heartfelt moment, I was reminded of the unbreakable bond we shared, one that surpassed distance and time.
