Summer presents a collection of festivals that combine fun, charity, and awareness. Here are four special celebrations happening in June:
National Go Barefoot Day (June 1)
Established after the 2004 tsunami, this day promotes barefoot walking for health benefits like stronger muscles while supporting Soles4Souls, a non-profit that has provided 19 million shoes globally. You can join barefoot activities or organize shoe collections. By simply taking off your shoes, you can improve your own health while helping children get the shoes they need.
World Oceans Day (June 8)
Oceans cover 66% of Earth and provide 50% of our oxygen, yet 8 million tons of plastic waste pollute them yearly. This day honors the ocean’s irreplaceable roles while inspiring worldwide participation. People can get involved by cleaning beaches, reducing single-use plastics, and watching educational films — turning awareness into action for a healthier planet.
Be a Kid Again Day (June 12)
This lighthearted day encourages adults to relive childhood joys — whether sliding down playground slides, building sandcastles, or rewatching classic kids’ movies. Beyond personal enjoyment, the celebration also supports meaningful causes like A Kid Again, a US non-profit organization that provides fun-filled adventures for children with life-threatening illnesses.
Helen Keller Day (June 27)
Held every year on June 27, this day honors Keller (1880-1968) who became the first person with her disabilities to earn a college degree and wrote 12 books. While celebrating her amazing life, the day also recognizes all those who support the blind and deaf community through events like charity fashion shows and public readings of Keller’s inspirational works.

Not long before writing this note, I set out with Gracie to hike a favorite trail, which is how I found myself out of breath up a steep Berkshires hillside in late-winter snow. The trail hadn’t been broken, and there was a wild wind. I paused at a fork. One way led to the highest point in the preserve, our goal for the day, and the other descended, wrapped around the cliff and back to the parking area. A longer but easier trail that passed by an impressive beaver dam we always loved to see. Gracie sat, her wagging tail making a one-winged snow angel.
I thought of cancer survivor Lynne Hartke’s brave story in this issue, about struggle to reach the top of El Misti, a dormant volcano in Peru, and the lesson she learned. Like Lynne, I hate to give up before reaching a goal, even if mine was more modest. Yet maybe, like Lynne, I should recognize that my plan is not always God’s plan, not today at least, and maybe not on any given day.
We don’t pick stories for an issue around a certain theme. Still, a theme sometimes suggests itself as the pieces develop. Take our cover story, by Mary Bryan Shrader. Her plan was to become a hard-charging corporate lawyer. Now she’s a YouTube cooking star and pepper, teaching people traditional ways of keeping a kitchen. Little did she know how that philosophy would influence her faith in a moment of crisis. In her story, Night and Day, all Jessica Reed desired for was to be normal. Yet was her idea of “normal” God’s idea? Take a cross-country ride with Jim Hinch and son in The Two Dudes, and witness how the best-laid plans of a father can take a different turn.
In my life, I’ve learned that the path laid out before me was not the one I thought I would follow. And yet it has brought great fortune. Even on a late-winter day on a snowy hillside trail. “Come on, Gracie,” I said. “Let’s go see the beavers.”
24. How did the author feel when pausing at the fork?
A. Confident.
B. Hesitant.
C. Determined.
D. Impatient.
25. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “modest” in paragraph 2?
A. Ordinary.
B. Challenging.
C. Expensive.
D. Hidden.
26. What is common among Lynne Hartke, Mary Shrader, and Jessica Reed?
A. They failed in career.
B. They shifted personal goals.
C. They broke former plans.
D. They found faith through nature.
27.Why does the author write this passage?
A. To criticize strict planning.
B. To promote religious beliefs.
C. To encourage flexible thinking.
D. To describe a hiking adventure.
C
Every Wednesday, retiree Zhang Zhili travels an hour by bus to an education center, drawn by the pulsing rhythms of the African drum she plays there in a classroom filled with fellow retirees whose hands move together, every beat lifting her spirits.
Many older Chinese are looking beyond traditional nursing homes, afraid of abandonment by their families and quality issues. That’s driving a boom in universities, home care services, and communities catering to older adults. Though some providers struggle to turn a profit, they persist because they see promise in the growing market.
China has a rapidly aging population. Last year, about 297 million people were aged 60 or above, over one-fifth of the population. By 2035, this number is forecast to go beyond 400 million, or over 30% of all Chinese.
That’s fueling growth in services and products aimed at older adults in what Beijing calls the silver economy, which is expected to grow from about 7 trillion yuan (about $982 billion) currently to approximately 30 trillion yuan(about $4.2 trillion) in 2035, raising its share in the economy from about 6% to roughly 10%, Zu Quan, a researcher at the State Information Center, a public institution linked to with China’s main planning agency, told state media. The government is expanding basic care services to all elderly people in need, moving beyond its traditional focus on those without family support.
Various companies are looking to grab a slice of this government-backed market. Property developers like Vanke Co. and Sino-Ocean Group and insurance companies such as Taikang Insurance Group have built high-end communities for older adults with amenities such as movie-screening and mahjong rooms and dining services.
Still, questions remain about the spending power of many older Chinese. China’s silver economy is still in its early stage, said Gary Ng, a senior economist at Natixis Corporate and Investment Banking. “There are prospects here, but it seems there’s still much that needs to be done,” he said.
28.What can be inferred about Zhang Zhili from the first paragraph?
A. She seeks joy and socializes with others.
B. She learns a new skill and prepares for future employment.
C. She struggles with loneliness and relies on her family for support.
D. She prioritizes exercise and improves her physical health.
29.What is the main reason for the rise of the silver economy?
A. China's rapidly aging population creating market demand.
B. Technological advancements in elderly care products.
C. Government restrictions on traditional nursing homes.
D. A cultural shift toward valuing individualism over family care.
30.What did Gary Ng think about China's silver economy?
A. It has already reached maturity and requires no further investment.
B. It faces challenges with rural gaps and unstable profits.
C. It targets urban wealthy and ignores ordinary seniors.
D. It shows potential but significant efforts remain necessary.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the article?
A. The Challenges of Silver Economy in China
B. The Reason for Silver Economy in Chinese Society
C. The Impact of the Silver Economy in China
D. The Rise of the Silver Economy in China
D
Getting into arguments, whether with family or strangers online, can feel like debating with a wall. We are probably all guilty of thinking we’re right, even if we don’t have all the facts. This phenomenon called the “illusion of information adequacy” is detailed in a recent psychology study.
“Interpersonal conflict is on the rise, driving increases in anger, anxiety and stress,” said Angus Fletcher, a neurophysiologist at the Ohio State University. “We wanted to look into those misunderstandings and see if they could be reduced.”
Fletcher’s team surveyed 1,261 Americans online. Participants were divided into groups and given articles about a fictional factory. One group read only reasons for the factory to merge (合并) with another factory, another only reasons for staying separate, and a Control group read all the arguments.
They found that the majority of the groups who only read the pro- or anti-merging arguments believed they had enough information to make a good decision, and would follow the article’s recommendation, while about 55 and 45 percent of the control group recommended the factories merge or separate. The participants with the one-sided information also assumed that others would make the same decision they did.
The team calls this belief the illusion of information adequacy, as Fletcher describes it, “The less our brain knows, the more confident it is that it knows all it needs.” These findings add to research on naive realism, the belief that one’s subjective understanding is objective truth.
While naive realism studies focus on different understandings of the same situation, Fletcher’s research shows people may share the same understanding, if given sufficient information. When the participants from the one-sided groups were asked to read all the arguments, some would change their minds. The mix of opinions was comparable to the control group - about 55 to 45 percent.
“One of the best ways to fight the illusion of information adequacy when disagreeing with someone is to stop and ask, ‘Is there something I’m missing that would help me see their points better?’ This can help avoid unnecessary interpersonal conflict, allowing us to focus on working through key differences between ourselves and others,” said Fletcher.
32.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The academic background of Angus Fletcher.
B. The cause and effect of interpersonal conflicts.
C. The importance of reducing misunderstandings.
D. The significance and purpose of Fletcher’s study.
33.What were all three groups asked to do during the study?
A. Defend their own views.
B. Discuss before making decisions.
C. Read the assigned arguments.
D. Recommend the best article.
34.What does Fletcher’s research find?
A. People with the same information make similar decisions.
B. People from the control group are better decision-makers.
C. People less informed are more likely to change their minds.
D. People with partial information overestimate their judgments.
35.What does Fletcher suggest people do when disagreeing with others?
A. Work through key differences together.
B. Check for extra facts to understand others.
C. Stop arguing to avoid interpersonal conflict.
D. Get more evidence to support their own point.

Creative writing has no written formula (公式) and no strict laws. 36 Therefore, we have more freedom to express ideas, thoughts and imagination in creative writing. But it doesn’t mean creative writing needs no techniques. Follow these tips if you want to boost your creativity and improve the way you write.
Always be writing
You never know what will inspire your writing. Keep a notepad or download a notes app to your personal device so you can record any ideas you have. 37
Embrace rewriting.
Even the greatest writer rarely gets it right in the first draft. 38 Or, in some cases, start over. Storytelling and word building take a lot of time and thought, and only through rewriting will you be able to craft a version that works best.
Know your audience.
Ask yourself whether this story is for your creative writing students or a wider population. Maybe you are a novelist with a specific readership. Maybe you are an academic writer trying to break into the young adult market. 39 It’s essential to know your audience, narrow down the tone and work in ways that appeal to your target audience.
Show Don’t Tell.
This is an effective tool and a useful rule for all writers. Fiction is for entertainment, so entertain your readers! 40 Let them see, hear, feel and smell. Show them what is happening through details, facial expressions and images, rather than simply telling them.
A. Make them feel amused by your story.
B. It is all about originality and creativity.
C. Anyone can make great creative writing.
D. Give them a vivid picture of what you have created.
E. Don’t be afraid to reedit and erase what doesn’t work.
F. Don’t ignore the random ideas that pop into your head.
G. It’s rare for a piece of writing to appeal to all the people.

Once upon a time, there lived a young boy named Ethan in a small village. With a passion for music, Ethan was enthusiastic about playing the guitar. Every day after school, he would rush home, grab his guitar, and lose himself in the melodies (乐曲) he created.
One summer, the village was hosting a talent show, and Ethan decided to participate. However, doubts started to flood into his mind. He began comparing himself to other talented musicians and questioning his abilities. The fear of failure began to consume him.
But Ethan’s grandfather, who had always been his biggest supporter, noticed his grandson’s inner struggle. He sat down with Ethan and shared a story from his own youth.
“When I was your age, I had a dream of becoming a painter. But I was filled with self-doubt, just like you are now. I decided to seek guidance from a wise old artist in a nearby town.
The old artist listened to my worries and offered me a challenge. He asked me to paint a picture on a large canvas in front of a crowd. Overwhelmed by the challenge, I hesitated.
The wise artist smiled and told me not to focus on what others might think. He asked me to paint from my heart and pour my soul into every stroke. The beauty lies not in perfection, but in the authenticity (真实性) of one’s creation.
Encouraged by these words, I accepted the challenge. I painted with passion, letting my emotions guide my brush. Finally, a beautiful masterpiece appeared on the canvas.”
Finishing the story, Ethan’s grandfather said, “That day, I realized that success is not defined by how perfect we are or how we compare to others. It’s about embracing our unique talents, taking risks, and expressing ourselves with passion and authenticity.”

续写范文
Inspired by his grandfather’s story, Ethan decided to give the talent show his all. He threw himself into practice, setting aside the fear of being judged. Every day after school, he locked himself in his room, playing the guitar until his fingers ached. Instead of chasing perfection, he focused on conveying his true feelings through the strings. He chose a melody he composed himself, one that told the story of his love for music and his inner struggles. On the day of the show, his heart raced as he stepped onto the stage, but he took a deep breath and thought of his grandfather’s words.
Ethan didn’t pay much attention to the surroundings until he heard the applause at the end of his performance. He looked up, surprised to see the audience cheering loudly, some even waving their hands. When the host announced that he won the second prize, tears welled up in his eyes. After the show, many people came up to him, praising his music for its sincerity. Ethan realized that his grandfather was right—success wasn’t about being the best, but about being true to himself. From then on, he played the guitar more confidently, knowing that the most beautiful music came from the heart.
