Times change, and with them, so do the places we love. The day I heard that the Bright Bookstore was closing, I felt so sad. This bookstore opened in our neighborhood 50 years ago, serving as a great place where people could connect through their shared love of books.
When I met Old Tim, the store’s owner, he told me it was difficult to run a traditional bookstore nowadays. Most young people liked reading e-books and more people bought books online.
Childhood memories came back to me clearly. A group of us kids used to come to the store. We would look through the new books, or simply chat with Tim. We spent lots of hours reading there. Tim encouraged us to share our thoughts by writing them on a large board.
A few months later, I was back and was surprised to see that the Bright Bookstore was still open for business. It was still old, but inside it was like a different world. In an area, a book reading was going on. Readers were sharing their ideas on a screen instead of the old board and some were reading books on computers. The store even had a coffee shop selling delicious food.
Tim told me that the coffee shop now hosted many community events, including book readings, concerts, and movie nights. The bookstore was turned into a place where the book lovers got together and shared ideas and experiences.
“Well, as you can see, technology and creativity have brought my old bookstore into the 21st century! I’m so glad to see that everything I wanted to offer to the community is still here,” Tim said with a smile.
No matter how times change, there are always people who love reading. With the development of technology, traditional bookstores should also change in a creative way.

English has become a global language. So which country, not including English-speaking countries, speaks English best? 21
Swedish language education company EF published their 2016 English Proficiency (熟练程度) Index this month. The Netherlands (荷兰) ranked first, followed by Denmark and Sweden. 22

China has 400 million English learners, reported China Daily. 24 According to the People’s Daily Online, there are seven primary schools in Shetianqiao town in Hunan, but only one English teacher. Many students still learn English by rote memorization (死记硬背).
Sebastian Magnusson, an officer at the Swedish embassy (大使馆) in Beijing, gave some advice. Swedish people speak English well and Magnusson himself is also fluent in Chinese. 25 “Do not limit it to textbooks. What matters most is to use what you’ve learned,” Magnusson said.

It was early morning. Peter Corbett helped Mark Wellman out of his wheelchair (轮椅) and onto the ground. They stood before El Capitan, a huge rock almost 1.2 kilometers high. Mark dreamed to climb El Capitan when he was a child. At the age of 21, he fell while climbing a mountain and lost his legs. But he never lost his love for life.
Mark knew he couldn’t finish the climb alone, but his friend Peter would be there to give a helping hand. They thought it would take seven days to reach the top. Now Peter Corbett climbed about 30 meters up and hit a piton (岩钉) into the rock. Fastening (拴紧) one end of a 50 meter rope to the piton, he let the other end of the rope fall down. Mark caught the rope and fastened it to his belt. He next reached above his head and fastened a T bar (丁字铁) to the rope. Mark took a deep breath, pushed the T bar up almost as far as his arms could reach, and began the first pull up. High above, Peter let out a cheer. You’re on your way.
For the first four days the two men progressed upward (向上) without accident. But on the fifth day, a very strong wind began to blow, making it hard for Mark to hold on to his rope. But Mark kept on pushing up the T bar and pulling himself up.

It took them one day more than they had expected. But as the two heads appeared, the group of people waiting on the top went wild with joy.
